Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/516 Presented by: Stonefly Nets, Daiichi, Angler's Coffee Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Matt Lewis of Redeye Bass Fly Fishing shares his insights on redeye bass and their vital conservation efforts in the Native Fish Coalition to preserve its native population. We will also uncover the unique characteristics of redeye bass, their habitat preferences, and the exciting pursuit of the Redeye Slam. Episode Chapters with Matt Lewis on Redeye Bass 1:40 - Matt tells us how he got into fly fishing. Initially, his focus was to become a medical doctor. He spent decades doing cancer research, but his outlet has always been fishing. 3:15 - One of his friends introduced him to redeye bass fly fishing. He grew up in Alabama where the species is abundant. When his interest grew, he got frustrated that there were limited resources for that species at that time. 6:00 - That led him to write and release a book in January 2018 entitled Fly Fishing for Redeye Bass: An Adventure Across Southern Waters. 9:38 - We dig into the distribution of redeye and other similar species. They exist mostly in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. 13:50 - He tells us what a fall line is. 16:00 - He talks about fishing redeye bass which he says are aggressive top-water eaters very much like brook trout. His favorite bug to use is chartreuse or yellow popper. Any kind of foam attractor like hopper patterns also works well. 18:23 - He mentions East Alabama Fly Fishing which offers guide services in Tallapoosa River for bass fishing. 19:50 - He shares some concerns about the population of redeye bass such as the moving of species to where they don't belong and habitat disturbance. These would have long-term effects on their native population. 28:00 - He briefly talks about their spawning. 29:36 - I ask him about how he got connected with Dorsal Outdoors leading them to make a film called "A Slam That Saves". The film features him and Mary Beth Meeks attempting to catch a "Redeye Slam" in one day. 38:46 - The biggest conservation group that he has worked with was the Native Fish Coalition, a national non-profit organization. He also has worked as an advisory board member for a local riverkeeper organization. 43:35 - He encourages everyone to educate themselves and others on the danger of moving fish around, and to get involved with conservation groups. 45:55 - We give a shout-out to Angler's Coffee. Matt prefers dark roast coffee with bold flavors like the Muddler's Blend from Angler's Coffee. He also gives a shout-out to his go-to fly shop which is the Deep South Outfitters. 48:32 - Aside from redeye bass, the other top species you can fish in Alabama are smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, spotted bass, and panfish among others. He's currently writing a fly fishing guidebook for Alabama. 52:36 - Matt says pursuing redeye bass fishing is growing the sport because it's the easiest entry to fly fishing. 55:06 - He shares a fun fact about the species. 56:53 - I ask about the smallmouth bass distribution. 57:30 - He likes listening to podcasts when driving. Aside from listening to our podcast, he also likes The MeatEater Podcast and The Orvis Fly-Fishing Podcast wherein he was also interviewed last year. 58:48 - He gives a call to action to support the conservation of the redeye bass population. What I learned from rereading Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman by Yvon Chouinard. This episode is brought to you by: Tiny: Tiny is the easiest way to sell your business. Tiny provides quick and straightforward exits for Founders. ----This episode is brought to you by Hampton: Hampton is a highly vetted membership community for entrepreneurs, founders and CEOs. Join the private network for high-growth founders.----Follow one of my favorite podcasts Invest Like The Best !----[3:45] One of my favorite sayings about entrepreneurship is: If you want to understand the entrepreneur, study the juvenile delinquent. The delinquent is saying with his actions, “This sucks. I'm going to do my own thing.”[4:32] The original intent for writing Let My People Go Surfing was for it to be a philosophical manual for the employees of Patagonia. We have always considered Patagonia an experiment in doing business in unconventional ways.[7:48] MeatEater Podcast #188 Yvon Chouinard on Belonging to Nature[7:55] The first part of our mission statement, “Make the best product,” is the cornerstone of our business philosophy. “Make the best” is a difficult goal. It doesn't mean “among the best” or the “best at a particular price point.” It means “make the best,” period.[9:58] When I die and go to hell, the devil is going to make me the marketing director for a cola company. I'll be in charge of trying to sell a product that no one needs, is identical to its competition, and can't be sold on its merits. I'd be competing head-on in the cola wars, on price, distribution, advertising, and promotion, which would indeed be hell for me. I'd much rather design and sell products so good and unique that they have no competition.[14:32] We were like a wild species living on the edge of an ecosystem: adaptable, resilient, and tough.[14:49] I believe the way towards mastery of any endeavor is to work towards simplicity. The more you know, the less you need.[15:49] The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry[17:59] Complexity is often a sure sign that the functional needs have not been solved. Take the difference between the Ferrari and the Cadillac of the 1960s. The Ferrari's clean lines suites its high-performance aims. The Cadillac really didn't have any functional aims. It didn't have steering, suspension, aerodynamics, or brakes appropriate to its immense horsepower. All it had to do was convey the idea of power, creature comfort, of a living room floating down the highway to the golf course. So, to a basically ugly shape were added all manner of useless chrome: fins at the back, breasts at the front. Once you lose the discipline of functionality as a design guidepost, the imagination runs amok. Once you design a monster, it tends to look like one too.[21:29] Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike by Phil Knight. (Founders #186)[28:02] Becoming Trader Joe: How I Did Business My Way and Still Beat the Big Guys by Joe Coulombe. (Founders #188)[28:55] There are different ways to address a new idea or project. If you take the conservative scientific route, you study the problem in your head or on paper until you are sure there is no chance of failure. However, you have taken so long that the competition has already beaten you to market. The entrepreneurial way is to immediately take a forward step and if that feels good, take another, if not, step back. Learn by doing, it is a faster process.[31:33] Can a company that wants to make the best-quality outdoor clothing in the world be the size of Nike? Can a ten-table, three-star French restaurant retain its third star when it adds fifty tables? The question haunted me throughout the 1980s as Patagonia evolved.[35:47] I was still wondering why I was really in business.[38:17] We had to begin to make all of our decisions as though we would be in business for a hundred years.[39:02] Made in Japan: Akio Morita and Sony by Akio Morita. (Founders #102)[39:13] Jeff Bezos on what he learned from Akio Morita and how it influenced the building of Amazon:"Right after World War II, Akio Morita, the guy who founded Sony, made the mission for Sony that they were going to make Japan known for quality. And you have to remember, this was a time when Japan was known for cheap, copycat products. And Morita didn't say we're going to make Sony known for quality. He said we're going to make Japan known for quality. He chose a mission for Sony that was bigger than Sony. And when we talk about earth's most customer-centric company, we have a similar idea in mind. We want other companies to look at Amazon and see us as a standard-bearer for obsessive focus on the customer as opposed to obsessive focus on the competitor."[42:13] Keep your company in Yarak: Super alert, hungry but not weak, and ready to hunt.[42:45] Against The Odds: An Autobiography by James Dyson (Founders #200)[44:02] Jay Z: What am I here for? To be second best? I don't think so.[44:13] The more you know, the less you need.[51:33] Teach, inform, and inspire. Do so relentlessly and the sales will follow.[53:04] I was taught by some wise people that if you manage the top line of your company-your customers, your products, your strategy-then the bottom line will follow. But if you manage the bottom line of the company and forget about the rest, you'll eventually hit the wall because you'll take your eyes off the prize. — Steve JobsIn the Company of Giants: Candid Conversations With the Visionaries of the Digital World by Rama Dev Jager and Rafael Ortiz. (Founders #208)[56:03] Quality, not price, has the highest correlation with business success. Whenever we are faced with a serious business decision, the answer almost always is to increase quality.[56:59] Huberman Lab Podcast[57:19] I cannot imagine any company that wants to make the best product of its kind being staffed by people who do not care passionately about the product.[57:39] One of my all time favorite quotes:A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.[58:56] You should not see change as a threat, rather as an opportunity to grow and evolve to a higher level.Subscribe to listen to Founders Premium — Subscribers can ask me questions directly and listen to Ask Me Anything (AMA) episodes.----Join my free email newsletter to get my top 10 highlights from every book----I use Readwise to organize and remember everything I read. In 1980 I was a kindergartner… I walked out onto a playground for recess and there was a kid chuckin a basketball at the hoop… I remember he had a cool hat on. He was a first grader I was a kindergartners and it was my first recess… I went over there and stood by him. He let me try- we took turns trying to heave that ball up towards the basket at recess… Jimmy was my first friend. He may not know this but it's true. On my first day of school in kindergarten… I went out to what became my favorite subject… Recess. basketball up towards a rim. These are both outdoorsman themed -hunting, fishing, camping etc.

When most people think of hunters, they probably visualize someone who paid huge amounts of money for a "trophy hunt" or someone out to satisfy a blood lust but that couldn't be farther from the truth. My guest in this episode, Ryan Dumville, breaks down that stigma and shows that hunters are in fact the ones with the most respect and admiration for our great outdoors. This a great conversation between friends about the future of hunting and where it stands in our society today! Podcast Notes Key Takeaways In a lot of states, many of the fish & game agencies get no hard funding. In other words, when you pay state tax, they don’t receive any of it.“The bulk of the state fish & game agency’s finances comes from the sale of licenses, tags, and stamps. Hunting licenses, fishing licenses, permits, tags, all the stuff that goes with hunting and fishing.” – Steven Rinella“Even if you hate hunters and anglers, you can’t get around the fact that hunter and anglers fund your state’s wildlife apparatus.” – Steven RinellaWhen you help one species, chances are you’re helping other wildlife species in that environment:“By helping elk through improving their habitat and protecting their habitat, you’re helping everything on the landscape. From songbirds to insects…you’re helping everything.” – Steven RinellaHunting foundations do exactly that:“Every year they add to the net amount of pristine wildlife habit that exists in this country. And you cannot say the same thing about PETA.” – Steven RinellaWhen saving wildlife becomes political, sometimes the animals get caught in the crossfire:“When conservation becomes so partisan and so political, often times an animosity towards the animal develops. Because the animal becomes emblematic of what some people might view as Federal overreach.” – Steven RinellaReconnect with nature by trying to identify where your water source comes from and how it leads back into the ocean:“Ask yourself, when you turn on your faucet and water comes out, where did that water come from? Did it fall as snow, rain? Where was it collected? Is it from an aquifer? What feeds the aquifer? Then ask yourself, when it goes down the drain, what is its path to where it hits the ocean?” – Steven RinellaRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgSteven Rinella on Hunting (And Why You Should Care), Reconnecting with Nature, Favorite Trips, and More | Brought to you by LinkedIn Jobs hiring platform, FreshBooks cloud-based small business accounting software, and Allform premium sofas.Steven Rinella (@StevenRinella) is the host of the Netflix Originals series MeatEater and The MeatEater Podcast. Podcast Notes Key Takeaways When it comes to writing, the sum is greater than the parts:“None of the instruments mean anything in absence of the orchestra” – Steven RinellaWriting beautiful prose is great, but if the sentences don’t flow well and tell an amazing story, the writing isn’t worth much As a hunter, Steve has had a lot of encounters with death:“I think that I’m hyperaware of death and how it comes” – Steven Rinella“I have very close proximity to it…I think that a lot of people don’t haven’t had that but if they did, they would view everything in their life differently” When you observe the process of life to death, you start to look at the world differently“I have a hyper-realistic sense of what it means to be alive, like what goes into life”Since COVID hit, many people moved out of big cities into less populated areas like MontanaThis also means more game licenses are going to be sold. Wisconsin sold 40% more fishing licenses this Spring than a year ago. Since people can’t travel out of the country and most events and festivals have been canceled, more people are going camping, hiking, and spending time outdoors.Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgSteve Rinella (@SteveRinella) is the host of the Netflix Original series MeatEater and The MeatEater Podcast. Dr. Bracy V. Hill, senior lecturer in history at Baylor University, speaks about Christian perspectives on sport hunting. While hunting isn't the first thing on the minds of biblical scholars, hunting is mentioned and used in numerous metaphors throughout Scripture. One particularly mysterious account is that of Nimrod in Genesis 10. Moreover, the activity of hunting raises many important theological issues, such as man's relationship to creation, the nature and eschatology of death, and the Christian's directedness away from a wilderness toward a heavenly city. Dr. Hill is co-editor of God, Nimrod, and the World: Exploring Christian Perspectives on Sport Hunting in which many of these themes are addressed. Dr. Hill is the author of many article and wrote a dissertation titled, “The Language of Dissent: The Defense of Eighteenth-Century English Dissent in the Works and Sermons of James Peirce." He also appeared on the Meateater Podcast to discuss many of these themes but to an audience of hunters. https://vimeo.com/361826723
