On April 25, 2004, Broadmoor Hospital inmate Peter Bryan attacked a killed fellow inmate Richard Loudwell, a man awaiting sentencing for the murder of an eighty-two-year-old woman. The fact that the murder occurred in England's most famous and supposedly secure psychiatric hospital was shocking, but more shocking was that this was Bryan's third murder, and the second in as many months. Indeed, just two months earlier, while he was under the care of doctors and social workers in an open in-patient mental health hospital, Bryan left the facility in February and a few hours later he'd killed, dismembered, and partially cannibalized forty-three-year-old Brian Cherry.Peter Bryan's murders were highly sensationalized by the press, particularly the tabloids, who fueled the ongoing moral panic over the abysmal state of England's mental health system. While the reporting did little more than exacerbate the public's growing anger with the government, they nonetheless highlighted a very important question everyone wanted answered: How was a man with Bryan's mental health and criminal history able to get released institutional care, and moreover, why was he not under surveillance when he murdered a third time—this time in heavily guarded psychiatric hospital?ReferencesBennetto, Jason. 2005. Co-Host Raiford Palmer (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/raif) The term 'break-up' itself inherently implies damage, doesn't it? But just because you're splitting up with a woman--or even heading into a painful divorce--it doesn't mean bitterness and hate has to rule the day, or that you have to hand over all of your hard earned assets to the family law profession. My guest Raiford Palmer from STG Divorce Law in Chicago, and author of the bestseller I Just Want This Done is yet another good, solid divorce law veteran who works for his clients from a position of ethics and accountability. So, what are the warning signs that a relationship is beyond repair? And what's the very first thing any man should do when he feels a divorce is imminent? How exactly does our masculine instinct to provide and protect work against us when a relationship is failing? When the divorce actually happens, should you litigate or mediate? What are the very real, and sometimes 'hidden' complications of children being caught up in the divorce? What does Raif tell people when they call him up, tell him their story and ask him whether or not they should divorce their spouse? (His answer will surprise you.) What is the value of getting an actual divorce coach, as opposed to depending on your attorney for anything other than legal support? And what is the single most costly mistake (literally) that men tend to make when sitting across the table from their soon-to-be-ex-spouse? Overall, a great conversation that will serve as a good insurance policy against losing your shirt in family law court, even if you're not currently going through that ordeal.
Interview with Lucy A. McLaren, the author of the 2022 smash-hit novel Awakening! From the back cover: "The Kingdom of Septima is ruled in all but name by the Commune, a ruthless cult that seeks control of an ancient power that has taken root in unsuspecting children in Septima. Evelyn is forced to face her past when two wayward children, Raif and Rose Huntsman, arrive at the tavern, pursued by Commune soldiers. The children fall under Evelyn's reluctant care as the trio narrowly escape a raid.Relentlessly hunted by Commander Jonah Sulemon and Commune agent Lord Eirik Torrant, Evelyn and Raif cannot fathom why they pose such a threat to the Commune, until six-year-old Rose unwittingly reveals a terrible secret: she possesses powers more fearsome than any the Commune has unearthed in decades.
Raif is undoubtedly a legend, a true humble genius whose work ethic is unparalleled. Raif talks us through the story of how he came to choose the Evo platform that he now reigns over. He describes the once tame Evo that is now the #1 overall that he bought so many years ago. He walks us through how that chassis has evolved into what it is today and the many different setups that it has gone through. Raif recounts the day of the world record breaking 7.560 pass at Maryland International Raceway. He then talks about what being #1 in the world means to him and why he pushed himself and his car so hard to achieve it. Raif then talks about what's next for him and the car, the next goal and what events you can see them at this year. Raif gives his expert advice to Evo owners who are looking to climb up our lists. Finally Raif gives thanks to all those who helped propel him and his car to the top of of our Evo list.

Raif and Connie are a married, childfree couple in London, who run the Goodlett Guide, a blog dedicated to their childfree relationship, travel and lifestyle. I was drawn to their honesty on their childfree life from joining the mile high club to Raif's decision to get a vasectomy at 25 so that he could take control of his childfree future. Raif is the first male I have had on my podcast and brought such a new element to the conversation. We discussed the double standard men and women face being childfree, life as a childfree couple in London and how even though they run a blog on being childfree there are still those who believe they will have kids. On the fence and struggling with making the decision once and for all if you want kiddos ? With my free download, "The Kid Question," you'll identify and release your perceived obligations and expectations — your should shackles — so you can decide your future on your terms. www.hollykrivo.com/tools --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/soberishuprising/message
We were thrilled to be joined by Ensaf Haidar, the wife of imprisoned Saudi blogger Raif Badawi. Raif's unjust imprisonment and lashing has become an international human rights cause, thanks in no small measure to the tireless efforts of Ensaf. She has become the face of the movement to free Raif. Despite all of Ensaf's apparent physical daintiness, there can be no mistaking her strength and determination when it comes to leading the fight to free her husband.
She is an author. She is a mother. She is a full-time activist, working tirelessly for the release of her husband Raif Badawi, the blogger imprisoned in Saudi Arabia with a sentence of 10 years and 1000 lashes for simply speaking his mind. It has now been 6 years since her three children saw their father, a two-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee. Ensaf updates us on Raif's health, morale, and the need for all of us to do more. Listen to our conversation.
