It's the Umbrellaholics finale you never saw coming: Coda. Chaos reigns when the redneck neighbors upstairs blow a hole in the building, cooking meth and leaving behind a massive bill. But the Maniacs aren't backing down—they're hosting a full-on telethon to save the day from financial ruin. Expect the unexpected as The Last Call Lounge becomes ground zero for an evening of musical mayhem, including an Atomic Punks set and a wild Björk headliner. The neighbors rally together to answer phones, and save the building, proving that sometimes, the only thing crazier than the problem is the solution. Tune in for the heartfelt goodbye which marks the end of an era, leaving us all a little sad to say farewell to the madness. When a sweltering heatwave hits the city, Jay cranks up the AC to full blast and accidentally plunges the entire city into darkness. Now, Beck and Jay must brave the blackout, navigating their building's chaotic halls to scavenge supplies and survive the night. Along the way, they cross paths with a lotto scratchy gang, a Big Wheel-riding crew, and a parade of eccentric neighbors who seem to thrive in the weirdest of ways. To top it off, the Maniacs discover their building has housed a secret Top Coop Market since the turn of the century—a one-stop shop with prices that blow their beloved Crambone Mart out of the water. Can Beck and Jay make it through the blackout without getting sidetracked or sucked into the madness? Probably not. Tune in for high-strangeness, hijinks, and hilarity as the Maniacs stumble their way through bedlam!

On our 80th episode of Fabulous Film & Friends what better way to follow up a Road House podcast than by looking at the highlights of pioneering gay director John Schlesinger? We're talking about 1969's Midnight Cowboy starring Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Brenda Vaccaro, John McGiver, Sylvia Miles, Bob Balaban and Barnard Hughes as well as 1971's Sunday, Bloody Sunday starring Peter Finch, Glenda Jackson, Murry Head and Dame Peggy Ashcroft topped off with 1975's The Day of the Locust starring William Atherton, Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, Burgess Meredith, Bo Hopkins, Pepe Serna, Geraldine Paige, Richard Dysart, Lil' Jackie Earl Haley, an even littler Billy Barty and Mrs. Lovey Howell, herself, Natalie Schaeffer. I'm joined this week by the reliably ab-fab crew of my kid-sister and lit major Roseanne Caputi as well as the sensitive cowhand himself, actor, photographer and snappy patter producer par excellence Gordon Alex Robertson! Okay, before we don the fringed suede jackets and find a spot on 43rd St., the synopses: In Midnight Cowboy big, dumb Texan Joe Buck quits his job as a dishwasher and hops on a Greyhound to the big town, New York City with dreams of making his fortune as a male prostitute servicing rich, bored housewives on Park Avenue. After a series of cringe-inducing misfires, Joe finds himself penniless and living in a squalid, condemned apartment with a sickly, limping con man named Enrico “Ratso” Rizzo. With Ratso serving as Joe's manager the only place they can go is straight down. Barely surviving a New York winter, Joe's fortunes finally start to change for the better until a dying Ratso implores Joe to get him to Florida. Sunday, Bloody Sunday slowly--ever so slowly-- catalogues the highs and lows of two middle-aged, upper-class Londoners, one man, Dr. Daniel Hirsch, a perennially single doctor and one woman, Alex Greville a divorcee who both find purpose and vitality in a love triangle with Bob Elkin, a young sculptor in his 20's. The three must deal with abrupt change, loss and acceptance when Bob the sculptor moves to America. The Day of the Locust, based on the 1939 novel by Nathaniel West, follows the course of three, tragic dreamers who came to Hollywood with eyes toward stardom but end up victims of its cold-hearted excess: Tod Hacket, a somewhat idealistic --if a bit rapey set designer from Yale-- who is in love with Fay Greener, a beautiful but talentless day playing actress who refuses to date men that aren't wealthy, and none other than Homer Simpson, a simple, religious and socially awkward accountant who naively takes Fay in to live with him. Was Mr. Schlesinger an all time great? Or a one hit wonder? Find out! Madeline, Julian, and Emilio continue their cycle on Unique Best Picture Winners with a "Suggestion Box" episode on the 1969 classic "Midnight Cowboy," the first and only X-Rated film to win the top Oscar. As the oldest film the trio have covered to this point, they each think it holds up spectacularly in numerous ways, such as its frenetic dual portrayals of youthful desire and repressed trauma, its iconic needle drops with Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'," and Dustin Hoffman's inimitable overbite. Aided by myriad anecdotes along the way on the film's production and release, director John Schlesinger's greater filmography, and, as it just so happens, Emilio's freshman year at NYU, the trio follow in the footsteps of Joe Buck and Rico "Ratso" Rizzo (luckily without being forced to yell "I'm walkin' here!") and go where the filmic sun keeps shining through the pouring rain.If you enjoy our podcast, please consider writing us a positive review on your podcast platform of choice. #oscarsliste #oscar #oscars #academyaward #filme #filme #movie #cinema #leinwand #kino #asphaltcowboy #midnightcowboy #cowboy #jonvoight #dustinhoffman #newyork
This week on the Bonus Dopey show! We were lucky enough to have New York City legend and raconteur - Larry ‘Ratso’ Sloman to actually show up at Dave’s father’s opulent apartment to kibbitz. Ratso talks all about his illustrious rise to prominence starting out writing for Rolling Stone Magazine joining Bob Dylan on the infamous Rolling Thunder tour, and then becoming the editor in chief for National Lampoon, and High Times before reinventing himself as one of the most sought after ghostwriters around. He co-wrote Scar Tissue with Anthony Kiedis, and Private Parts and Miss America with Howard Stern, among others. Sit back and enjoy two old school New Yorkers doing what they do best on this week’s bonus episode Dopey!
Stu Levitan welcomes a special guest for a special topic on this day after Bob Dylan's 79th birthday. We're joined by The Rev. L. J. Sloman of the Last Exit Before the Freeway Church of God, as seen on WMTV's The Weekend Starts now with Ben Sidran, a/k/a UW graduate student Larry Sloman, a/k/a Ratso, to talk about a book, and album and a movie. The book is On the Road with Bob Dylan, his epic account of Dylan's 1975 tour, the Rolling Thunder Revue. The critically acclaimed album is Stubborn Heart, from which that brief snippet of Dylan's Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands was borrowed, and which includes 8 Ratso originals. The movie is Martin Scorcese's fascinating and fanciful Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story,” in which he has a featured role – as he did in Dylan's own movie about that tour, Reynaldo & Clara. As to Bob Dylan, he is, without question, the greatest singer-songwriter since Homer. And his live performances on that 1975 tour were among his most intense and electrifying in a 60-year career of intense and electrifying performances. As to Larry Sloman, he has had a career path I both envy and appreciate. A native New Yorker, he made phi beta kappa and graduated magna cum laude from Queens College in 1969, with a degree in sociology. To avoid the draft, he joined Volunteers in Service To America, the domestic peace corps, and was assigned to Milwaukee, where he worked with Father James Groppi's welfare mothers, and sometimes their daughters. After a year in VISTA, he accepted a fellowship from the National Institute for Mental Health and came to Madison for his Master's in Deviance and Criminology, which, as he notes has informed his work ever since. But more importantly, while here he also became music editor of the Daily Cardinal. Which helped him sell a story to Rolling Stone, after which he wrote for it some more, and then broke big news with a preview of Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album. From there, he got the Rolling Stone gig to cover the Rolling Thunder Revue– at least for a while -- and then wrote the book which Bob Dylan himself calls “the War and Peace of rock and roll.” Then five years as Editor-in-Chief of High Times magazine, six as Executive Editor of National Lampoon, and a literary career that now includes Steal This Dream: Abbie Hoffman and the Countercultural Revolution in America, Reefer Madness: The History of Marijuana in America, The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of : America's First Superhero, and Thin Ice: A Season In Hell With the New York Rangers. And best-selling collaborations with radio personality Howard Stern, boxer Mike Tyson, magician David Blaine, Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis, and Peter Criss of Kiss. Various side projects, including producing the award-winning music video of Dylan's song Jokerman. And now he's a recording artist, as well. As I said, envy and appreciate. It is a great pleasure to welcome to Madison BookBeat the legendary Larry Ratso Sloman.

Ratso and Vin unpack the star-studded origin story of Dying On The Vine and speak with best-selling author Jonathan Lethem about its' influence on his book Girl In Landscape.
The writer and actor has released his debut album, which features vocals from Nick Cave. Joan Baez gave him his nickname due to his scrappy appearance on tour with Bob Dylan.
From New York, it’s the legendary Larry “Ratso” Sloman, author of On The Road With Bob Dylan, the up-close-and-personal story of the 1975 Rolling Thunder tour. Ratso shoots the breeze with Luke and Kerry about Bob, Joan, Sara, Joni, Roger, Renaldo, Clara and the rest of the gang. The Scorsese Rolling Thunder Revue doc is previewed and his new album discussed. From his beginnings as a suburban teenage accountant to hanging out with the foulmouthed Fugs, blagging his way into Rolling Stone magazine, accosting Dylan outside a beauty parlour and being invited on tour, to recording a duet opposite Nick Cave (with flute by Warren Ellis) - it’s been a long, strange trip. Our conversation with Ratso includes Stubborn Heart album producer Vincent Cacchione. Ratso Sloman was known as Larry until Joan Baez changed his name. He has written books on Houdini, David Blaine, Mike Tyson, Howard Stern and Anthony Kiedis. He has directed a Dylan video, edited National Lampoon and written a history of marijuana in America. More importantly, Ratso has a Master’s Degree in Deviance and Criminology. Trailer Podcast: Ratso & Friends Twitter: @ratsosloman Listeners: please subscribe and/or leave a review and a rating. People seemed to love cowboys in 1969, albeit very different sort of cowboys. It's western week on The People vs Oscar! The people flocked to see movie stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." The film takes the expectations of a traditional western and flips it on its head with charm. Meanwhile, the Oscars rewarded their first X-rated picture with "Midnight Cowboy." Jon Voight's Joe Buck isn't your traditional cowboy. He's more of a gigolo type that moves to New York to whore himself out, but ends up experiencing severe poverty with his hobbled homeless friend, Rico "Ratso" Rizzo. Both films take the western genre and inconographies in totally new directions. Which take did we prefer? Listen to find out.
