Zev Feldman, a.k.a. the “Jazz Detective,” has turned his crate-digging passion into a career: He tracks down previously unreleased recordings and jumps through the necessary hoops to get them released, often in lavish packages for his label, Resonance Records. This past Record Store Day featured such Feldman finds as live albums from Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Dorham and Charles Mingus plus a limited-edition double album of previously unreleased Patsy Cline performances, Imagine That: The Lost Recordings (1954-1963). Feldman also co-produced last year's incendiary Blue Note release from McToy Tyner and Joe Henderson, Forces of Nature: Live at Slugs. In this expansive conversation, Feldman tells his Jazz Detective origin story and describes how he finds these recordings (or vice versa), he gets specific about the importance of Record Store Day and these projects' tight margins, and he reveals his white whales.  Producing a historical recording requires enormous patience, investigative powers like an investigative journalist. The journey is long, emotional, and exciting when the recordings are discovered, and the final package completed. This is what Zev Feldman does. He is the producer for and co-president of Resonance Records, a record label that releases archival recordings that are previously unissued. The Resonance catalogue includes John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, among many other legendary musicians. In this episode, Zev Feldman and I discuss his insights into his multifaceted career, how he got started in the music industry and his subsequent journey through various roles in sales, marketing, and ultimately producing rare jazz recordings. Feldman works with numerous other labels including Blue Note, Verve Label Group, Elemental Music as well as own his own labels, Jazz Detective and Deep Digs. Feldman spins many stories about his adventures in discovering music long forgotten. It's music that is not just good; it must be GREAT! Curating legacy music requires a sense of understanding about the elements of a dynamic recording, one that exceeds others in the quality of the performance, the importance of a certain date, and the historical aspect of the show or studio recording. Then there is the emotional involvement with the families of these jazz legends, many of whom become close friends, such as it has with the families of jazz guitar legend Wes Montgomery (Zev produced the first archival recording of Wes Montgomery for Resonance) and piano virtuoso Bill Evans as Feldman is just releasing his 13th archival recordings of Bill Evans. Then there is the importance of Record Store Day on April 12. Feldman highlights the significance of this little-known observed day in bringing these projects to life. This episode is rich with music, thanks to Zev Feldman and Resonance Records. There is more than 36 minutes of full tracks of music along with clips of recordings discussed. The playlist includes: Freddie Hubbard-On Fire, “True Colors-Breaking Point Closer” (13:32); Freddie Hubbard-trumpet, Bennie Maupin-tenor saxophone, Kenny Barron-piano, Herbie Lewis-bass, Freddie Waits-drums. Charles Mingus-Mingus in Argentina-The Buenos Aires Concerts, “Duke Ellington's Sound of Love” (9:32), Charles Mingus-bass, Ricky Ford tenor saxophone, Jack Walrath-trumpet, Robert Neloms -piano, and Dannie Richmond-drums. Kenny Dorham-Blue Bossa in the Bronx: Live from the Blue Morocco, “Blue Bossa”, (13:31), Kenny Dorham-trumpet, Sonny Red-alto sax, Cedar Walton-piano, Paul Chambers-bass and Denis Charles-drums. Short music clips: Charles Mingus-"Pork Pie Hat", Freddie Hubbard-"Crisis", Kenny Dorham-Blue Friday, Bill Evans-"Ro(u)nd Midnight". Thank you for listening to this podcast. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Polly Gibbons, Renowned Jazz Singer / Songwriter About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Polly Gibbons, is an internationally renowned singer from England who's rich, powerful, soulful voice delivers a unique jazz fusion that incorporates her R & B, gospel, jazz, funk and blues influences.    She's been twice-nominated as "Best Jazz Vocalist" by the BBC and Jazz FM, and the London Sunday Times described her jazz vocals as “vintage R&B with shades of Aretha Franklin”.  With her raw, smouldering voice that's full of heat, she conquered the London jazz scene at the age of 17.    And since then, she's become a regular at the legendary jazz club, Ronnie Scott's in London.  She's performed at Royal Albert Hall, opening for George Benson and Gladys Knight, and in 2018 she had a residency at New York's legendary Birdland Jazz Club.  She's performed on tour across the USA, Europe and Asia, from Java Jazz in Indonesia to the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival.    In 2014, renowned producer George Klabin signed her to his record label, Resonance Records in Los Angeles, where she's recorded 3 highly acclaimed albums: “Many Faces of Love”, “Is it Me?”, and “All I Can Do”.  On June 30, she'll be releasing her 9th studio album entitled, “As It Is”, containing 10 original songs composed by our guest, who not only produced the album – she accompanied herself at the piano, supported by a great team of musicians.  The songs on the album feature heartfelt stories of personal struggle and resilience, with magnificent vocals, always characterized by this brilliant singer's wit and grace.   In describing this woman's voice, we need go no further than Peter Quinn of Jazzwise Magazine, who proclaimed her “a truly exceptional, once-in-a-generation talent, possessing a voice of such sizzling intensity and raw emotion, that you could fry an egg on it.” For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Polly Gibbons, go to:https://www.pollygibbons.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pollygmusic/https://twitter.com/PollyGMusichttps://www.instagram.com/PollyGMusic/https://www.youtube.com/@PollyGmusichttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5HHILDuntfU7shOCmCECyF?si=B5GiF9l8TvKUWuLe7ngokA&nd=1https://soundcloud.com/pollygibbonsofficial #PollyGibbons  #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Angela Hagenbach, Acclaimed Jazz Vocalist About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Angela Hagenbach, is one of America's most popular jazz singers, whose extraordinary 3-octave vocal range, unique phrasing and ebullient singing style make every song she sings truly her own – and very memorable.    With her sultry contralto voice, she sings everything from swinging, straightforward jazz and blues to sensual, rhythmic Latin Jazz with effortless agility.  She's recorded 6 albums entitled, “Come Fly With Me”, “Feel the Magic”, “Weaver of Dreams”, “Poetry of Love”, “Musa Nova”, and her latest album, “The Way They Make Me Feel”, beautifully produced by the brilliant George Klabin of Resonance Records, who selected some classic songs by Michel Legrand, Henry Mancini and Johnny Mandel.  It's been said by more than one music critic – and I agree – that when this woman sings, she has the uncanny ability to turn jazz into a spiritual experience.   In 2015 she finished as 1st runner-up at the Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition.  That same year, she wrote the acclaimed “Jazz Alice: An Adventure in Wonderland”, a musical theatre production based on Lewis Carroll's classic book, set to the music of John Coltrane.   She performs regularly at jazz clubs and concert venues in her home town of Kansas City, as well as around the country, and internationally.   The renowned jazz historian Scott Yanow listed our guest as one of the greatest jazz singers of all time in his book, “The Great Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide”.   And if that weren't enough, our guest was TWICE chosen by the US State Department to represent the United States as a Cultural Jazz Ambassador in TWO world tours, starting at the Kennedy Center and performing in 17 countries. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/https://angelahagenbach.co/https://www.facebook.com/angela.hagenbach.1https://www.instagram.com/angelahagenbach/https://angelahagenbach.bandcamp.com/album/the-way-they-make-me-feelhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/angela-hagenbach/4582211https://resonancerecords.org/artists/angela-hagenbach/ #AngelaHagenbach   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

We look at three 2022 releases this time (albeit one recorded way back in 1972) along with the first harbinger of the new year.  There's an electronic sounding long-playing debut by a pair of youtube wunderkinder (all played in real-time we promise), a straight-ahead tenor sax trio, another star-studded portfolio album from a rising sax star, and a sprawling live opus from the music's greatest bassist/composer.  For a chase, a sprawl of pop matters that ranges from gospel tunes to stereo demonstration discs to poor lonely Art Garfunkel.  Lakecia Benjamin – PHOENIX; Domi & JD Beck – NOT TIGHT; Adam Larson – WITH LOVE, FROM CHICAGO; Charles Mingus – THE LOST ALBUM FROM RONNIE SCOTT'S.

2500 DelMonte Street: The Oral History of Tower Records

“I don't think I ever recovered from Tower going away” Zev Feldman tells us towards the end of this episode. If you worked at Tower Records on the East Coast, you most certainly worked with Zev Feldman. Starting as a salesman for Polygram Distribution, young Zev covered Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston. A visit from Zev Feldman was full of energy, enthusiasm and a pure music fan's zeal. Later Zev had a stint with Rhino Records as the Northeastern Classical & Jazz Sales ManagerWhen Tower Records went away and the music business tried to figure itself out (has it succeeded?) Zev landed at Concord Music Group as a National Sales and Marketing Director for catalog recordings in Los Angeles. In 2009 Zev moved to Resonance Records where he was given free reign to search out previously unreleased recordings by some of the legends of Jazz. Zev's releases have been critical and sales smashes, so much so that he was elevated to the position of Co President of Resonance Records. As each ensuing project dominated the jazz landscape, Zev was hired as a consulting producer of archival and historical recordings for Blue Note Records in 2018 working with Don Was. But it doesn't stop there. Zev Feldman is also a consulting producer with Elemental Music, Sunset Blvd Records, Real Gone Music  and Reel To Real Recordings. Very recently Zev was named Best Producer in the 70th Annual DownBeat Critics Poll. Throughout our conversation Zev discusses growing up in Record Stores, working for Universal Distribution and doing all of his work in Record Stores, he explains the complicated process of putting these gorgeous jazz box sets together and how brick and mortar retail is always the jumping off point for releasing these labors of love. He also tells us about his regular visits to the Tower Records stores in Dublin Ireland and Japan  and the feelings invoked. Finally Zev tells us how Tower's demise hurt him personally.

WALTER THEODORE ROLLINS was born on September 7, 1930 in New York City. He grew up in Harlem not far from the Savoy Ballroom, the Apollo Theatre, and the doorstep of his idol, Coleman Hawkins. After early discovery of Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong, he started out on alto saxophone, inspired by Louis Jordan. At the age of sixteen, he switched to tenor, trying to emulate Hawkins. He also fell under the spell of the musical revolution that surrounded him, bebop. In late 2020, the saxophonist released Rollins in Holland, a 2-CD/3-LP deluxe set via Resonance Records. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Zev Feldman is an independent record producer who got started in the jazz business as a young man (in his early 20s) and came up through the ranks of sales (“schlepping a bag of CDs”), merchandising, marketing, distribution - all of the pieces of the business as it existed at the end of the last century. Over time he came to settle comfortably in an area of the jazzosphere that focuses on locating, unearthing and releasing previously unknown recordings. Some people know him as “the jazz detective.” Variety magazine called him “possibly the most widely admired archival producer working in the jazz field today,” Downbeat refers to him as “The Jazz Sleuth” and perhaps most famously, Stereophile Magazine called him “the Indiana Jones of jazz.”  He works with almost every major jazz label and many small independent labels, but his primary professional residence is with Resonance Records. He has shepherded the release of previously unknown recordings by the likes of Wes Montgomery, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, Joao Gilberto and many more (including my dad!). In the conversation it’s clear that as big of a jazz fan as he is, he is also in love with the business of jazz records. He goes out of his way to remember and name all of the people in the business who helped him along the way. Here he talks about becoming a producer (“it was like pouring gasoline on a fire”), the importance of “folklore and mythology” in the world of jazz collecting, why finding the right outlet for a recording is like finding shelter for an orphaned animal, and how he builds relationships. www.third-story.com www.resonancerecords.org

Burning Ambulance Podcast

Support the Burning Ambulance podcast on Patreon: http://patreon.com/burningambulance Episode 27 of the Burning Ambulance podcast—the first episode of Year Two of the show—is the first one not to feature an interview with a musician. Instead, I’m talking to Zev Feldman, who’s a producer working primarily with the Resonance Records label. Resonance has been around for ten years and has mostly specialized in releasing archival music by legendary jazz artists. Their first big release was Echoes Of Indiana Avenue by guitarist Wes Montgomery—it featured some previously unheard early recordings. They’ve subsequently done several other albums of his music, including a live concert recorded on his only European tour in 1965. They’ve also put out albums by Stan Getz, Charles Lloyd, Bill Evans, Larry Young, and John Coltrane, among many others, and Zev is the guy who actually travels the world locating these lost recordings and putting in all the legwork to get them licensed, make sure they’ve got the rights, and do everything else that leads to the physical release. The thing that makes Resonance releases so great, by the way, is that they’re not just about throwing the music out there—they have really in-depth liner notes, tons of historical photographs, interviews with the surviving musicians or people connected to the recordings in some way, and beautiful packaging overall. They’re all about preserving the love of physical music formats. They do special releases for Record Store Day every year, putting out the vinyl versions before the CD edition and stuff like that. They don’t just release archival music, either—they also put out CDs by new artists, and Zev and I talk a little bit about that in this interview. We also discuss some of the non-Resonance work he’s done, like the Thelonious Monk record Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960 and a big project he did the other year, reissuing 25 titles from Xanadu Records, a small '70s label that really deserves much more attention than it’s ever gotten. There's a lot more music in this episode than usual. Here's a full listing of everything you'll hear: Thelonious Monk, "Well You Needn't" (Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960) Grant Green, "I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing" (Funk in France: From Paris to Antibes 1969-70) Wes Montgomery, "Full House" (In Paris: The Definitive ORTF Recording) Bill Evans, "Very Early" (Another Time: The Hilversum Concert) Larry Young, "Mean to Me" (In Paris: The ORTF Recordings) John Coltrane, "Crescent" (Offering: Live at Temple University) Andreas Varady, "Radiska" (The Quest)

Without a doubt a hot first podcast will launch a series of Hipstercast's episodes. We invite you to listen to the real hits of the year. What is worth noting the most in 01 podcast? Amazing remix of Lana Del Rey and her Blue Jeans hit by Gesaffelstein a cult summer. The new release on the Culprit is always hot with a fat bass sound and stunning vocals. You can not go past the beautiful to the release of Eklektisch Sivesgaard. Remix from Crek on Ramon R - Sex Machine is perfect for any club party. The guys from No Artificial Colour always on top with a new track on the label Resonance Records. I hope you will appreciate the new track by Sebastien Tellier - Cochon Ville which sounds great in a remix of The Magician. It should also be noted the boys from The Mekanism pleasantly surprised with each new track. I hope you have time to stress the same tracks from Jay Shepheard, Tad Wily, DJ Glen, Matt Fear, Finnebassen as well as from Peaches, Munk with a really cool remix of CLASSIXX.
