George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review six films from the 1990s to 2000 that released for the first time on Blu-ray. We start with the animated "Rover Dangerfield," (1991) where Rodney Dangerfield's hallmark humor is impeccably tailored to tickle the funny bones of both kids and adults alike. Next we review the first film released by MTV Films, "Joe's Apartment," (1996) starring a young Jerry O'Connell and a host of singing cockroaches. From December we start with the excellent, "Saving Grace" (2000), a Indie darling that should not be forgotten, with standout performances from Brenda Blethyn and Craig Ferguson. We then review the romp "A Midwinter's Tale" (1995), directed by Kenneth Branagh. This mock-u-mentary style film is a delightful look behind-the-scenes of indie Shakespearean theater. We wrap up our reviews with two films released in November. First is the historical drama "Rapa-Nui" (1994) from Kevin Costner's Tig Productions and directed by Kevin Reynolds. Filmed on location on Easter Island, this story of Polynesian history is a visual and dramatic delight. And our last film is the historical romance "In Love and War" (1996) starring Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell and directed by Richard Attenborough. This beautifully shot film is based on the true-life romance of a young Earnest Hemingway and his experiences in Italy during World War I.We provide a review of each film, the restoration, and all of the extras to help you decide if you want to add it to your physical media collection.Purchase links:ROVER DANGERFIELD (1991) Blu-rayJOE'S APARTMENT (1996) Blu-raySAVING GRACE (2000) Blu-rayA MIDWINTER'S TALE (1995) Blu-rayRAPA-NUI (1994) Blu-rayIN LOVE AND WAR (1996) Blu-ray The Extras Facebook pageThe Extras Twitter Warner Archive & Warner Bros Catalog GroupOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers. The first detour from Christmas takes Kerry and Collin to the beloved and behated Valentine's Day. Conveniently, that also happens to be the name of the movie they talk about. Garry Marshall's last three films were holiday-based rom-com adventures. "Valentine's Day" might be the best of the three, but will likely be the only one covered on this show. How does the "Love Actually' formula work for this multiple-stories-in-one-day device? Can one be a convincing phone sex worker in a PG-13 movie? What are the three best Garry Marshall movies? All this, plus Collin goes through the new releases in pohysical media for the month of January in the Blu-ray Gift Exchange. Blu-rays covered: Critrerion: "Trainspotting" 4K (1996) Paramount: "Eddie Murphy Raw" (1987) Warner Archive: "Joe's Apartment" (1996) "Rover Dangerfield" (1991) "Faithless" (1932) "Cabin In the Sky" (1943) "A Day At the Races" (1937) MGM: "Red Planet Mars" (1952) "Strange Invaders" (1983) "Kingdom of the Spiders" (1977) (DVD)
Peter Sobczynski helps Erik Childress get caught up with a few weeks of Blu-ray releases. They include what may be John Sayles' finest film along with one of the better Nicolas Cage movies that nearly got buried. There are movies with submarines and others with serial killers and stalkers plus a genuine animated gem you may have missed. One of the best film noirs musicals, post-Vietnam films are available this week along with the Marx Bros. and Rodney Dangerfield as an animated dog. (It's not the gem.) Peter takes you into the world of Chantal Akerman and Coffin Joe while Arnold Schwarzenegger gets the 4K upgrade for both his comedy and one of his most iconic roles. 0:00 - Intro 2:25 – Criterion (Lone Star, Chantal Akerman Masterpieces 1968-1978, Trainspotting) 18:21 – Vinegar Syndrome (Red Rock West) 27:19 – Kino (Scarlet Street, The Russians Are Coming The Russians Are Coming, Run Silent Run Deep, Coming Home, Kindergarten Cop) 51:48 – Arrow (The Conan Chronicles, Murphy's War, Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe) 1:15:15 – Severin (The Psychic) 1:19:32 – MVD (Cutting Class) 1:26:29 – Shout Factory (Thinner, Jennifer 8, Unlawful Entry) 1:46:51 – Warner Archive (A Day at the Races, Cabin in the Sky, Rover Dangerfield) 1:59:27 – Sony (The Triplets of Belleville) 2:02:45 – New Theatrical Titles On Blu-ray 2:04:06 – New Blu-ray Announcements 2:06:14 - Outro

Jeff Schimmel began his Writing/Producing career in the 1980s while attending law school in Los Angeles. When not studying for the bar exam, Jeff wrote and sold his original Cold War spy thriller, Archangel, to Phoenix Entertainment Group. Soon after, Jeff was chosen by comedy legend Rodney Dangerfield and award-winning Writer/Director Harold Ramis to co-write the full-length Warner Brothers animated film, Rover Dangerfield. This led to a sports comedy screenplay assignment from Orion Pictures and 20th Century Fox, and Jeff's first TV writing job as Story Editor on ABC's top ten sitcoms, Full House.Next, Jeff co-wrote and produced The Schimmel Papers, a series of several short films for Fox TV's Sunday Comics, then went on to write for the groundbreaking, Emmy Award-winning sketch comedy series, In Living Color, worked as Story Editor on the WB network's first-ever sitcom, then served as Writer and Producer on Laughing With The Presidents, NBC TV's final comedy special starring Bob Hope, with appearances by Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton, actors Tom Selleck, Don Johnson, Tony Danza, Ann-Margret, Naomi Judd, and many more.In 2016, Jeff took over as Executive Producer of Fuse network's music intensive Skee TV series, working with hip hop artists like Snoop Dogg, Tyler the Creator, Post Malone, and T.I. Also in the rap world, Jeff was credited as a producer on three multi-platinum selling CDs by Busta Rhymes. In 2017, Jeff's book, “Maximum Screenwriting,” was released and has earned Amazon's five-star rating. Jeff has appeared as a guest lecturer at L.A.'s famed Screenwriting Expo, is a popular speaker at prestigious universities and film schools, and has worked closely with the Writers Guild of America to protect the best interests of writers.25 COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND STRAIGHT ANSWERSThe entertainment industry is the toughest business around. To achieve success as a professional screenwriter, you will need every advantage you can get. A writer who faces readers, agents, producers, and creative executives are no different than a soldier going into combat. To have the best chance of survival, both would be wise to bring every weapon they can carry into the fight. This book is ammunition for the battles every screenwriter will face as it teaches: How to create a bulletproof outline, How to build and breathe life into compelling characters, How to defeat crippling procrastination, How to avoid being ripped off, and How to deal with a myriad of situations other books never mention. The one thing this book will not do is tell you what the proper margins are for a screenplay, where to place a parenthetical in dialogue or what is supposed to happen on page 30. There are dozens of books and free online lectures for that. Maximum Screenwriting was written for one reason only: to teach you what other books don't and to tell you what other writers won't.Enjoy my conversation with Jeff Schimmel. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2664729/advertisement

A long time ago, in a Hollywood far, far away…It is a time of upheaval for the Bushwood Country Club. Caddies run amok and dress like John Travolta, striking fear into the hearts of pool-goers. An evil version of Forrest Gump faces the ultimate challenge of exterminating a gopher that sounds like a dolphin.Despised for his loud clothing and louder personality, Rover Dangerfield wreaks random havoc on a boat. It is up to Chevy Chase and his rebel band of duffers to defeat the evil Emperor Judge and win a scholarship for a catholic kid with too many siblings…If you're enjoying Darth's Star Wars intro, you'll LOVE Jason's A-Team/Star Wars mashup. So, on this particular episode, Darth almost kills Jason with a Welcome Back Cotter impression. We find out that Jason would golf if dinosaurs were involved. And Darth simply can't tell if Jason loves Lauren Graham or Daniel Craig more. She's guessing Daniel Craig.Kenny Loggins (a.k.a K-Logg) is alright with the choice to not use Pink Floyd and Darth is not afraid to ring her judgement bell. But they're both afraid of a bad touch, especially if Ricky is not there to protect them.Jason and Darth honestly don't know how Harold Ramis had the time to shoot Caddyshack when he had the option to party with Chevy Chase, Bill Murray (who we've talked about before), and Rodney Dangerfield (note the Oxford comma). Your beloved co-hosts are genuinely impressed with Harold's self-discipline.Forrest Gump might have invented the pole dance along with his many other accomplishments. But sometimes, there just aren't enough gophers. Despite Darth's feelings about him appearing on The Office, behold Will Ferrell as a cat for his SNL Audition (around minute 7). It's pure genius. As always, huge shout-out to @VariantBrewing for delicious crowlers and to @Kmisencik for making our show relevant. We appreciate you both, along with all of you amazing Aussies out there. Our final thoughts is this: If you want to blow up a golf course, just take its owners out to lunch to distract them while you do it. He also doesn't know the difference between Australia and New Zealand or Julia Roberts and Geena Davis (who was in Thelma and Louise, The Fly, and Earth Girls are Easy, just to name 3). You can make fun of him on Twitter at @northfoggy. Get him, Internet! It turns out, there's no crying in baseball or in death, because the Maitlands take their horrific end in total stride. That being said, we co-hosts learned some very important lessons from this super child-unfriendly movie. A couple of those lessons are as follows:If you're provided a detailed guide book about the ins and outs of life after death, read it.NEVER go into business with an independent contractor who kisses your dead wife.Don't treat the ghosts who haunt your house like your trained Schnauzer dog.If you want your kids to be straight edge and get good grades, raise them right with ghosts and Calypso music.Tony Cox was the preacher at Beetlejuice's wedding (mind=BLOWN).What can we say? Beetlejuice contained a surprising amount of life lessons. A lesson you listeners should learn from us is, if you're watching the movies along with us, we don't break for our own tangents. Get on our level.Furthermore, Jason and I may not agree on who played the best Batman, but we know for a fact that Bird Person is better than Birdman. At this point, we realize that you're probably getting sick of us, but stay tuned anyway, because Jason and I will be selling tickets to the Michio Kaku vs. Neil Degrasse Tyson throw down. We are currently taking bets at DarthJader@HindsightisHorrifying.com (If that is the correct email. At this point we might just be screwing with you).If you want to hear an episode about the great Rover Dangerfield, just tweet us incessantly or drop us a line. Darth will make it so. Lastly, Johnny, if you're listening, @Darth_Jader‘s knowledge of and love for you is vast; she'll defend you to the Depp. And she'll see herself out.
