Smiles Included: Navigating through life with our rare disease superheroes
This episode is being published on February 28th, otherwise known as Rare Disease Day. This is the day we speak a little louder than normal on behalf of those impacted by Skraban-Deardorff. There are over 300MM people impacted by rare diseases worldwide, with 72% of them being rare genetic diseases like SKDEAS. Sometimes we feel small and alone and this day pulls all rare families together to drive awareness of the importance of fighting for treatments and better lives. So I'm doing something a bit different on the podcast today and featuring two guests that have recorded themselves answering the question “What Does Rare Disease Mean to You.” First, we will start with Andrew, who is a SKDEAS patient and we are proud to have him giving a voice to this genetic difference. Next, we have Kristen Worrell, who has a young daughter impacted by SKDEAS and she beautifully tells us what rare means to her and how grateful she is for her daughter. I've never had her on this podcast before, but she must join me in the future to tell more of her story. I also took this assignment and i flipped into writing a letter to our first neurologist. There is a proverb that is still widely taught in medical school that goes something like “when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.” That hurts our rare community and often delays diagnoses and dismisses parents that know there is something going wrong with their child. I wear a zebra brooch to remind myself to never let someone dismiss me again and to find the doctors that think zebras. Please visit SKDEAS.org for more information about Skraban-Deardorff and how you can support our superheroes.

The Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-6.3 Di III RXD will help keep you sane if you photograph birds. Tamron's lenses are usually some of my favorites. Admittedly though, I lean a lot more towards their primes and their constant aperture zooms. But the Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-6.3 Di III RXD is a little bit of this and a little bit of that. The image quality could be better. But the reliability is fantastic. You'll essentially be relying a lot on Sony's fantastic image sensors to create stellar images. But no matter what, know that you can do them in pretty much any condition you throw at this lens. The Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-6.3 Di III RXD will help keep you sane if you photograph birds. Editor's Note: This review was updated in January 2023. Table of Contents Pros and Cons Pros Cons Gear Used Tech Specs Ergonomics Build Quality Ease of Use Autofocus On the Nikon Z9 Image Quality Bokeh Chromatic Aberration Color Rendition Sharpness Extra Image Samples Conclusions Likes Dislikes Pros and Cons Pros Impressively sharp for the price point Weather sealed Speedy autofocus performance Lightweight Very, very affordable at $549 Cons I wish it had a zoom lock I also wish it had a focus limiter Gear Used We used the Sony a7r III with this lens. At a later point, we tested it with the Nikon Z9 as well. Tech Specs Tech specs are taken from the summarizing on LensRentals. Weather sealing Sony FE Mount Works with Sony AI with Animal AF 5.8 inches in diameter 67mm filter thread 15 elements in 10 groups 3 inches in length 2.6 feet minimum focusing 1.2 lbs Ergonomics The Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-6.3 Di III RXD is a pretty standard zoom for the Sony camera system. It's designed to be one of the simplest lenses to use. And in many ways, it really is. The only control that matters on this lens is the zoom ring. That's it. Said ring is also where you'll place your hand most of the time. The lens almost doubles in size when it's fully zoomed in and has the lens hood on. But if you're photographing birds, then you'll be fine. You'll more or less be far enough. If you put this lens on an APS-C camera, you'll be in even better shape. The front of this lens also has a small 62mm filter. Indeed, this is a compact lens. With enough room, you can put it in a camera bag while attached to a camera. At the rear is the manual focus ring. But I really doubt anyone will ever use it. I didn't. Build Quality The Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-6.3 Di III RXD is said to be weather sealed. Indeed, we took it out once or twice in the rain. However, it's a tough lens to use in the rain since it tends to be darker. Weather sealing aside, this lens is incredibly lightweight. Tamron has been doing this for a long time, and they need to be commended for it. They're a company that really understands mirrorless cameras. They were originally designed to be smaller and lightweight. This lens adheres to that concept. Ease of Use The Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-6.3 Di III RXD has no real controls on the lens. The only big one is the zoom ring. So you're basically just zooming in and out. Some would wonder if it should have a focus limiter. And at times, I really thought that it should. However, I don't think I lost that many shots with this lens. What's more, this lens should have a zoom lock. That helps keep it a bit more compact when it's stored away. But I'm nitpicking here a bit. When photographing birds, use the large tracking focus setting with continuous AF. You're much better off setting the focusing point yourself unless you have a clear shot at a bird feeder or something. Update January 2023 In 2022, an odd tree of Nikon's took grafted branches from Tamron — and started to bear some odd fruit. In some cases, the lenses took Nikon's exterior and pricing. In other cases, Tamron took the exterior and Nikon's Z mount. In this case, the Tamron 70-300mm is available for Nikon Z mount. In Janaury 2023, we tested it on the Nikon Z9 for birding photography. And overall, it did a good job. But there are some weird...

Afore says that no investment is "too early,” and very often investing in companies that are pre-product. We had a great conversation covering pre-seed investing, whether the current market should affect portfolio construction, and how they are able to execute on so many initiatives without the benefit of a large team. About Gaurav Jain:Before co-founding Afore in 2016 with Anamitra Banerji (formerly at Foundation Capital), Gaurav was a principal at one of the top-seed firms in the world in Founder Collective and prior to his investing career, he was an early Product Manager for Android Google and was a co-founder of Polar Mobile. In this episode we discuss:00:58 The inspiration for starting Afore 04:05 What is the difference between pre-seed and seed stage investments06:32 How Afore underwrites risk at the earliest stages of development10:19 The type of founders that Afore is most excited about13:03 Why storytelling is so important at the early stages of companies17:38 Why the market conditions haven’t changed Afore’s portfolio construction23:18 How they think about follow-ons and insider bridges26:58 How Afore has productized its offer with Afore Alpha31:40 How the Afore platform and community works36:48 What Gaurav’s day-to-day schedule looks like42:50 The lessons Gaurav has learned from his anti-portfolioI’d love to know what you took away from this conversation with Gaurav. In this episode, the guys discuss how the well known personal care brand, Old Spice, fought to stay relevant and to reconnect with their audience. They walk us through the brand's attempts to rediscover their “youth”, will they be successful? Nico shares what the Old Spice ceramic bottle reminds him of and Chad explains the word “swoon” to Nico. In the early 1900s a man named William Lightfoot Schulz started a company called, unsurprisingly, the Lightfoot Schultz company. They made shaving soap out of a factory in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1919, thinking he was making a good business deal, Schultz sold part of the company to the American Razor Blade company. Shaving soap and razor blades together…good deal right? Just about 15 years later, Schultz was forced out of the company he started. He sold control to the American Razor Blade company, and departed. With the money he made from the sale, he decided to start a new business. He stayed with what he knew, making fragranced soaps, toiletries, and shaving soaps primarily for women. The fragrances he used were based on a jug his mother had in her house. It was heavily scented with rose petals, clove, and potpourri. She used the scented jug to deodorize the home, much like an air freshener today. And she referred to these as her “old spice jugs.” Hence the name: Old spice. In 1937 he released his first product, a woman's scent called “early american old spice.” And in 1938 he saw the need for products for men, and he released his first product targeted at the male consumer. Old Spice was a huge success. And his products for men were so successful that he stopped producing women's fragrances altogether in 1939. Old Spice focused on Shaving Creams and aftershave lotions. This was right in the middle of World War II. Old Spice became a symbol of American patriotism, as soldiers carried their products around the world. Schultz leaned into this traveling wanderlust image, and used sailing ships in his branding to lend a feel of old world and adventure. The Old Spice brand did well after WWII - and into the 1940s. But Schultz passed away in 1950, and left his son George to take over. After a few years, without his father's keen business sense to guide it, the business started to decline. Have a look at this 1957 Old Spice ad here. As often happens when a brand is SO strongly identified with a particular generation, The audience ages, and the product's popularity wanes. By the early 1970s the brand had fallen so far that they were ripe for merger, and in 1972 Old Spice merged with American Cyanamid - a fortune 500 manufacturer with 100k+ employees. But the glory days of the brand were past. The younger generation considered Old Spice a brand for their grandfathers, a scent for older people. Even the name seemed to hint at it...OLD spice. There was nothing current or attractive about the brand. And there was different branding, the brand seemed caught between the idea of a younger surf-type brand, still identifying with the sea, but in a new way. Here's an ad from 1970 with this theme. Just 2 years later, they had another ad, watch it here. The brand really struggled to find it's true identity after it's target audience aged. And the story went on, even into the 1990's the brand suffered. Different divisions were sold off (the majority of it becoming part of what is Pfizer today) It seemed destined for the dump-heap of brand history. The Turnaround In 1990, Cincinnati based Procter & Gamble bought what was left of the brand for $300MM. The press release stated that P&G “liked the men's toiletries market” and felt the acquisition gave them “a strong foothold in the male toiletries market worldwide.” P&G had a vision for the brand, they were looking to get into the male market, and P&G doesn't do anything small. P&G Chairman and CEO at the time, Edwin Artzt, said he believed Old Spice had the “quality and reputation to be a major worldwide brand.

They are continuing to expand through strategic investments in the Washington, D.C. and Boston, Massachusetts areas. Show Notes Oliver (Ollie) T. Carr, III and John Coe Ollie Carr and I have known each other since 1999 when I helped him finance his first suburban office building acquisition. We went on to finance over $300MM of debt and equity transactions together until 2004 right before he rolled up his company into a public REIT called Columbia Equity Trust. The youngest son of Oliver T. Carr, Jr., perhaps the most prolific office building developer in the 1970s and 1980s in Washington, DC, he had real estate in his DNA with his namesake to boot, but as you will hear, he initially wanted to go a different path and became a banker prior to the 1990-91 financial crisis. Resetting his sights at that point as banking became difficult, he applied to graduate school and decided that MIT's Real Estate Program was the best opportunity. That led him to start his own company, Carr Capital in 1994, first into CMBS lending until the late 90's financial crisis that crashed the CMBS market, then into acquisitions with the help of two of his MIT classmates and seed capital from friend and family. Subsequently, he took his company public and then private again with many iterations. Now he leads a company that has and is developing among the largest mixed use projects in the region.
