Wilfred "Biffy" Dunderdale: A Life of Espionage On today's Spybrary, host Shane Whaley sat down with Lt. Col. Tim Spicer OBE, author of A Suspicion of Spies: Risk, Secrets and Shadows – The Biography of Wilfred ‘Biffy' Dunderdale. The book offers a glimpse into the life of this iconic British spy. Drawing upon years of research, Spicer's biography explores the remarkable life of a man who navigated the treacherous world of espionage, leaving an indelible mark on history. Early Life and Introduction to Espionage: Born in Odessa in 1899, Wilfred "Biffy" Dunderdale's life was marked by adventure from a young age. Spicer highlights Dunderdale's multilingual upbringing, fluent in English, Russian, French, Polish, and German, as a key asset in his future espionage career. By 16, Dunderdale was already immersed in naval studies in St. Petersburg, hinting at a future intertwined with maritime affairs. At the tender age of 17, Dunderdale found himself at the helm of an Imperial Russian submarine. In a daring maneuver, he engaged and sank five German ships, an act of valor that earned him the prestigious Order of St. Stanislav and the Order of St. Anne, the highest military honors bestowed by Tsar Nicholas II. This early display of courage and strategic thinking foreshadowed Dunderdale's future successes in the world of espionage. A Career Forged in Conflict: Dunderdale's exceptional language skills paved the way for his recruitment by British Naval Intelligence in 1918. During this time, he conducted numerous intelligence operations in Crimea, distinguishing himself with two Mentions-in-Despatches and a military MBE for his role in suppressing a Bolshevik mutiny aboard the submarine 'Outka'. The Rise of a Spymaster: In 1921, Dunderdale's talents caught the Secret Intelligence Service's (SIS) attention, leading to his posting in Constantinople. His responsibilities expanded to encompass intelligence work in Turkey, the Caucasus, and Southern Russia, further solidifying his reputation within the intelligence community. Dunderdale's meteoric rise within the SIS culminated in his appointment as Head of Station in Paris in 1926, at the remarkably young age of 26. This achievement marked him as the youngest SIS Head of Station ever, a testament to his exceptional abilities and the trust placed in him. In Paris, he collaborated closely with the French Deuxième Bureau, focusing on anti-Bolshevik and, increasingly, anti-Nazi operations. Crucial Contributions to World War II: One of Dunderdale's most significant contributions to the Allied war effort was his involvement with the Enigma machine. Working in conjunction with Polish and French intelligence, he played a key role in the development and understanding of this crucial German encryption device. Notably, Dunderdale facilitated the smuggling of the first Enigma machine to Bletchley Park just before the outbreak of World War II. This daring act provided Allied codebreakers with a critical advantage, enabling them to decipher German communications and significantly contributing to the Allied victory. Throughout World War II, Dunderdale maintained a vast and effective intelligence network in France, gathering invaluable information on German U-boat operations, Normandy's coastal defenses, and the development of V1 and V2 rockets. These intelligence coups proved instrumental in both the D-Day landings and the broader Allied war effort. A Legacy of Espionage and Intrigue: Dunderdale's postwar activities remained shrouded in secrecy. However, his influence continued to be felt in the shadowy world of espionage. Spicer's biography sheds light on Dunderdale's involvement in clandestine operations behind the Iron Curtain, his role in the Suez Crisis, and his connection to the "Buster Crabbe" affair. The Bond Connection: Dunderdale's life story reads like something straight out of a spy novel or 'like Commando comics' says Spybrary Host Shane Whaley. Biffy's long friendship with Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, has fueled speculation about Dunderdale's influence on the iconic character. Many believe that Dunderdale, with his taste for adventure, his network of informants, and his deep understanding of the world of espionage, served as a key inspiration for the suave and resourceful James Bond. Unveiling a Shadowy Figure: Lt. Col. Tim Spicer's A Suspicion of Spies offers a captivating look into the life of one of Britain's most enigmatic and influential spies. Through meticulous research and engaging storytelling, Spicer brings Wilfred "Biffy" Dunderdale out of the shadows, revealing a man who dedicated his life to serving his country in the most clandestine of ways. The biography stands as a testament to Dunderdale's unwavering commitment to his duty, his extraordinary courage, and his lasting impact on the world of espionage. 'An exhaustively researched, detailed and gripping account of the life and dramatic times of one of Britain's foremost secret agents - the inimitable Wilfred 'Biffy' Dunderdale. A fabulous hero to quicken any schoolboy adventurer's blood, Dunderdale remains an iconic figure in the world of British and allied secret services. Read this book to understand why.' Damian Lewis About the Author Lieutenant Colonel Tim Spicer OBE has led a life filled with action and adventure. During his twenty years in the British Army he saw active service in Northern Ireland, the Falklands campaign, the Gulf War and the Balkans, as well as serving in the Far East, Cyprus and Germany. Key appointments have included Chief of Staff of an Armoured Brigade, Staff Officer at the Directorate of Special Forces and Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards, among many others. Over the course of his illustrious military career, Spicer has developed extensive knowledge of intelligence, counter-terrorism, complex relations and protective security. In 2001 he founded the private security company Aegis, which has counted the UK, US and Italian governments among its clients. He is the author of An Unorthodox Soldier: Peace and War and the Sandline Affair (2000), a fast-moving account of his military life, including the events surrounding his time in Papua New Guinea when he was captured and held at gunpoint, as well as the notorious 'Sandline Affair' of 1996, and A Dangerous Enterprise (2021) that charts the history of the little-known, yet remarkable 15th Motor Gunboat Flotilla, commanded directly by the Secret Intelligence Service. It's Tuesday, June 25th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Muslims killing Christians in Russia and Nigeria Islam-related deaths have dominated the news over the weekend. Suspected Jihadists attacked Russian Orthodox Churches and synagogues in two cities in Southern Russia, 75 miles apart from one another, killing at least twenty, reports ABC News. In addition, last week, Fulani Muslims stormed a village in Kajuru County, Nigeria with AK-47s. As they shouted “Allahu Akbar” or “Allah is Greater,” they shot up a group of Christians who were conducting a prayer meeting for the community, killing five, reports International Christian Concern. 1,300 Muslims died during pilgrimage to Mecca And, just within the last week, over 1,300 Muslims have died of excessive heat on their pilgrimage to Mecca where temperatures have soared as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius), according to the Associated Press. One of the five pillars of Islam is the Hajj, a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Mecca. They hope it will help with forgiveness of their sins. But Ephesians 1:7 tells us that in Jesus “we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” Argentina's food inflation drops from 211% to 0.1% Argentina reports the first week without food inflation in thirty years, and only 0.1% in fifteen days. That's not bad for a nation that was looking at 211% inflation or 4% per week back in 2023. Argentina's new conservative president, Javier Milei, is wrapping up a visit to Europe, in which he referred to the government of Spain bringing "poverty and death" to the country. And, he told an audience that he is defeating the socialists with "the largest fiscal adjustment in the history of Argentina." Trump is angry that Biden has targeted pro-lifers Speaking to the Faith and Freedom Coalition's Road to Majority conference at the Washington Hilton over the weekend, presidential hopeful Donald Trump promised he would take care of the pro-life activists facing prison time “on the first day.” Listen to Trump tell the story of Paula Harlo. TRUMP: “In the Republican Party, we will always support families, babies, life. Very important to the Republican Party. “By contrast, Joe Biden is weaponizing the Justice Department to viciously persecute pro-life activists and Americans of faith. Just last month, the Biden DOJ got Paula Harlow, a 75-year-old woman in poor health, sentenced to two years in prison for singing outside of a [abortion] clinic. Fearing she would die in prison, her husband pleaded with the judge for mercy and even asked to be thrown in prison with his wife. The judge responded by mocking their religion. “Paula is one of many peaceful pro-lifers whom Joe Biden has rounded up, sometimes with SWAT teams, and thrown them in jail. Many people are in jail over this. This is just crazy. We're gonna get that taken care of immediately, first day. “But let's call these brave Americans what they really are. It's persecuted Christians. That's what they are. They're persecuted.” Franklin Graham to Trump: Stop cussing During another of his speeches over the weekend, the former president announced having received a letter from evangelist Franklin Graham, encouraging him to avoid foul language in his speeches. Trump said the evangelist is wrong on the matter. Trump justified an occasional use of foul language for emphasis, but then told the audience he has been “working hard on it.” Ephesians 4:29 is for all of us: “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” Supreme Court to examine case banning puberty blockers for minors The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday to take up a case which challenges a Tennessee law banning artificial medical treatments for minors who want to change their God-given gender, reports CBS News. About half of the states have placed restrictions on such medical procedures. Biden's transgender plan blocked The flags are on the field on this one. Already, two U.S. district judges have blocked the Biden administration's plan to impose Title IX restrictions on public schools in America in an effort to transgender bathrooms and sports programs. So far, 26 states have joined seven lawsuits concerning the policy which is supposed to go into effect on August 1st. The Scriptures do speak to this moral issue. Deuteronomy 22:5 says, “A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman's garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the Lord your God.” Will women be drafted? The U.S. Senate has approved a measure that would include women in the military draft, reports The Hill.com. The provision is not contained in the House version of the National Defense Authorization Act before Congress. And a spokesperson for House Speaker Mike Johnson told Fox News Digital that he is opposed to the inclusion of women in the draft. Presently, according to Pew Research, Israel, Eritrea, Mali, Morocco, North Korea, Tunisia, Mozambique, Norway, and Sweden include women in their selective service program. 2,750 pro-life pregnancy centers vs. 1,603 abortion mills Lifeway Research reports that 16% of Protestant churches support crisis pregnancy centers in the United States. Baptist churches are three times more likely to provide financial support for the pro-life centers than Lutheran Churches. According to the data, 2,750 pro-life pregnancy centers provide $358 million of free services to women across the country each year, according to a Charlotte Lozier Institute report issued last December. By contrast, as of 2020, there were 1,603 facilities conducting abortions in America. Sadly, states are now spending over $200 million annually on abortion services, and the federal government is funding domestic abortion businesses to the tune of $390 million per year. That's about the same amount of money donated each year by private charity to pro-life pregnancy centers. 21 Worldview listeners donated $4,140 And finally, toward our $84,000 final goal by 5:00pm central this Saturday, June 29, 21 Worldview listeners stepped up to the plate to help fund our 6-member team for another fiscal year. (Bonus) The Battle of Stalingrad (23 August 1942 – 2 February 1943)was a major battle on the Eastern Front of World War II where Nazi Germany and its allies unsuccessfully fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad (later renamed Volgograd) in Southern Russia. The battle was marked by fierce close-quarters combat and direct assaults on civilians in air raids, with the battle being the epitome of urban warfare. The Battle of Stalingrad was the deadliest battle to take place during the Second World War and is one of the bloodiest battles in the history of warfare, with an estimated 2 million total casualties. Today, the Battle of Stalingrad is universally regarded as the turning point in the European Theatre of war, as it forced the German High Command to withdraw considerable military forces from other areas in occupied Europe to replace German losses on the Eastern Front. The victory at Stalingrad energized the Red Army and shifted the balance of power in the favour of the Soviets.

HEAR THE HEADLINES – Beverage Multinationals Suspend Operations in Russia | Once Unleashed, Sanctions Have an Unpredictable Bite | Extreme Winter Transitions to a Gentle Spring | NEWSMAKER – Ian Gibbs, chairman since 2016 of the International Tea Committee | FEATURES – This week, Tea Biz travels to the UK offices of the International Tea Committee, where Chairman Ian Gibbs describes several immediate and possibly long-term impacts on the global tea trade - stemming from the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. Payment Concerns Further Disrupt Tea Supply Chain – During a period of upheaval caused by the pandemic, the tea industry's newest worries include guaranteeing payment for containers of tea without violating sanctions while booking scarce carriers for shipments to the Russian Federation and Ukraine. As the ruble's value collapsed, Russian tea buyers accustomed to favorable credit terms now find it difficult to secure the financing needed to pay upfront, according to Ian Gibbs, chairman since 2016 of the International Tea Committee (ITC). Gibbs predicts a dip – but not a significant drop in the volume of tea shipped to the world's third most valuable tea market. In 2020 the Russian Federation imported 142,000 metric tons of tea valued at more than $400 million and produced 4,000 metric tons of its tea, grown in Southern Russia along the coast of the Black Sea near Sochi.
Abu Abdullah Ibn Battuta was a 14th-century Islamic scholar who spent 20 years travelling the full extent of the Islamic world, which stretched from West Africa to the Middle East to Southern Russia to Western China down to the island of Java. All of these newly-Islamicized lands needed legal experts, and Ibn Battuta's skills were in as high demand as an IBM mainframe engineer in the 1960s or a Java developer today. He made an entire life travelling on religious pilgrimages, going to wealthy courts, getting highly paid positions, finding new wives, fleeing when his life was in danger (including a memorable shipwreck off the coast of India), and repeating the process over and over again. In this way he went as far south as Tanzania, as far north as the Volga basin, as far west as China, as far southeast as Indonesia, and as far west as Mali. In all, he went three times further than Marco Polo.
We live in unsettled times. A global health crisis, social unrest, economic collapse and fear grip our nation and many others around the world. As part of my ongoing effort to equip you as a successful metron manager I felt from the Lord that I should share a story with you. A part of My story. This part of my story involves another time and another place. This time and place was also in the middle of unsettled and dangerous times. The soviet union, the once unimaginably strong and seemingly permanent structure had collapsed. Another kingdom of this world had been humbled and brought to ruin so that the King of Kings could bring justice and restoration. The Kingdom of God was advancing and God had called me right into the middle of the chaos. Many of you feel that you are right in the middle of the Chaos. Fear and loss seem to rule the day. It felt the same way in the early 1990s when I landed in Russia. You may feel that you are down to your last 5 dollars and you are on a one way ticket to hopelessness. You are likely asking God ‘Where are you?' I want to share this story that I call ‘Faith and Five Dollars' I will be reading directly from my book entitled Faith and Five Dollars. Five dollars, six countries, four months and a one way ticket to Southern Russia. This is a book about faith, obedience, and miracles. Many of you are praying for miracles to happen. I want to share this book in this series of podcasts as a testimony to the reality and power of God. Ephesians 1:19-20 says ‘I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the boundless greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might.' I hope you enjoy this reading of ‘Faith and Five Dollars'.

Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan to look back at Chelsea's 0-0 draws against Man Utd and Sevilla and look ahead to Wednesday night's Champions' League tie away to Krasnodar. On the show tonight, we ask was the draw against Utd really turgid fare or was it a good point won and we heap praise on Mendy, Silva and James. In part two we discuss the penalty that should have been and let JK loose in his opprobrium of referees and VAR. We also look at defensive solidity versus lack of creativity and ask is the real issue we need to address in midfield. We wrap up part two with a look at the media agenda against Chelsea and what is really going on here.In part three we look back at another 0-0 draw in the Champions’ league match against Sevilla. Mendy and Silva were impressive but why were people disappointed in a good tactical hard-fought game against a tough Sevilla side; one which we had to avoid defeat in?In part four, we look ahead to this week’s Champions’ League match against Krasnodar, in Southern Russia and ask who are they; who will start for Chelsea and how do we see it going. Some like it hot, some like it cold. A common myth about Russia is that it is always cold. David and Grant talk about the weather they experienced in Southern Russia and how the summer heat drives away the frost so often experienced during winter months in the motherland. In episode 57 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering his recent week in Vancouver, Canada, and the relationship between photography and lens-based-media contemporary art practice. Plus this week photographer Guy Martin takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Guy Martin was born in Cornwall, England and graduated from the Documentary Photography course at the University of Wales, Newport in 2006. He began pursuing long term personal documentary projects while studying at Newport, one of which, Trading Over the Borderline - a documentation of the border region between Turkey and Northern Iraq and its trade routes – won him The Guardian and Observer Hodge Award for young photographers. Inspired by regions that are in periods of transition, he went on to pursue a long term project on the re-birth of the Cossack movement and Russian nationalism in Southern Russia and the Caucasus from 2005 to 2007, which culminated in the documentation of the Russian/Georgia conflict in August 2008. From January 2011 he began to document the revolutions sweeping through the Middle East and North Africa, photographing the revolution in Egypt before documenting the civil war in Libya from the east to the besieged western city of Misrata. In 2012 Martin was left seriously injured with shrapnel lodged in his spleen after a rocket attack in Misrata, in which his fellow photographers Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros were killed. His work has appeared in The Guardian, The Observer, The Sunday Times, The Daily Telegraph, Der Spiegel, D Magazine, FADER, Monocle, Huck, The New Statesman, The Wall Street Journal and Time. In 2011 he became a member of the photographic agency Panos and in 2012 his work from Egypt and Libya formed the basis for joint exhibitions at the Spanish Cultural Centre in New York, at the HOST Gallery in London, the Third Floor Gallery in Cardiff and the SIDE Gallery in Newcastle. His first solo show Shifting Sands was held at the Poly Gallery in Falmouth, Cornwall. He now divides his time between Istanbul and London. https://guy-martin.co.uk You can also access and subscribe to these podcasts at SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/unofphoto on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/a-photographic-life/id1380344701 on Player FM https://player.fm/series/a-photographic-life and Podbean www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/i6uqx-6d9ad/A-Photographic-Life-Podcast Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer in Photography, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Focal Press 2014) and The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Focal Press 2015). As RT's editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan runs a news network described by US intelligence as "the Kremlin's principal international propaganda outlet". Formerly known as Russia Today, RT risks being stripped of its UK broadcast licence in the wake of the Salisbury spy poisoning. So who is the woman at its helm? Born into an Armenian family in Krasnodar in Southern Russia, Simonyan grew up in poverty, but her academic achievements helped her win a place on a prestigious exchange program to the United States. Arriving in New Hampshire just four years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the experience changed her life. Initially shocked by the excesses of Western capitalism, Simonyan soon found her feet and was even crowned 'Carnival Queen' of her All-American high school. After returning to Russia, Simonyan started a career in journalism, becoming a household name after reporting from the carnage of the Beslan school siege. Shortly after, when she was just 25, she was handpicked to create the new Kremlin-funded international news network Russia Today. Controversy has dogged the channel, with allegations of pro-Kremlin propaganda and biased reporting, but all agree that under Simonyan's leadership the channel has given Russia a far bigger - and stronger - voice abroad. Married with two children, Simonyan is known by her friends for her love of disco, Cossack folk music and traditional cooking - including boiled beaver's head. Mark Coles asks some of those who know her best what drives her - including her best friend and the American woman who offered to adopt her as a teenager. Presenter: Mark Coles Producers: Beth Sagar-Fenton & Jordan Dunbar Researcher: Sylvie Carlos.
On this episode we feature an exquisite session with Katya Kraus. She was originally born in Germany, but later her family moved to Southern Russia, specifically to the city of Krasnodar. Since her early childhood, she was fond of music, she went to music school, studied guitar and had many other activities to cultivate her passion for music. But it was just in her adolescence when she met with electronic music, it was love at first sight. After a visit to the Kazantip Festival, she started to define her style and taste in the directions of Techno. Some time later, she actively began to study music production and collecting vynils. As per today, she has participated in several musical projects. And her applausive performances have been heard all over the Russian and European circuit. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Celts. Around 400 BC a great swathe of Western Europe from Ireland to Southern Russia was dominated by one civilisation. Perched on the North Western fringe of this vast Iron Age culture were the British who shared many of the religious, artistic and social customs of their European neighbours. These customs were Celtic and this civilisation was the Celts. The Greek historians who studied and recorded the Celts' way of life deemed them to be one of the four great Barbarian peoples of the world. The Romans wrote vivid accounts of Celtic rituals including the practice of human sacrifice - presided over by Druids - and the tradition of decapitating their enemies and turning their heads into drinking vessels. But what were the Celts in Britain really like? Was their apparent lust for violence tempered by a love of poetry and beautiful art? How far should we trust the classical historians in their writings on the Celts? And what can we learn from the archaeological remains that have been discovered in this country? With Barry Cunliffe, Professor of European Archaeology at Oxford University; Alistair Moffat, Historian and author of The Sea Kingdoms - The Story of Celtic Britain and Ireland; Miranda Aldhouse Green, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Wales.
