Putins brutala krig i Tjetjenien

Bild: Det tjetjenska regeringssätet i Grosnyj förstört under kriget. Foto: Mikhail Evstafiev. The siege of Beslan has left a scar on both North Ossetia and Russia. Twenty years on, many in North Ossetia still await the results of an investigation into the Russian authorities' handling of the crisis, which they believe might have contributed to the deaths of over 300 people — among them 186 children. This week, we spoke with Zalina Bogazova, a survivor of Beslan, about how those events have continued to shape the lives of her and hundreds of others, and with Ossetian political journalist Rooslán Totrov about Russia's handling of the attack and how Russia's war against Ukraine has changed how Beslan is remembered. Send us a Text Message. This week we are stepping into the shadows of the past as we uncover the chilling realities and patterns behind one of America's darkest days, the 1927 Bath Township School Massacre. But this isn't just a history lesson; it's an urgent call to foster vigilance and critical thinking. During the episode we'll dissect the actions of individuals like Andrew Kehoe, who sought notoriety through devastation, and we draw parallels to modern-day threats that could be lurking in the most familiar places. The complexities of human behavior take center stage as we analyze the psychological tapestry that weaves together perpetrators of violent crimes. From the overlooked 'boogeyman' next door to the 'injustice collector' in our midst, we reveal the catastrophic outcomes that ensue when warning signals go unnoticed. Our conversation navigates the intricate web of personal crises, control, and the narrative that individuals like Kehoe construct to justify their actions. We don't just recount these historic events; we scrutinize them to arm ourselves with knowledge that could very well save lives.Wrapping up our deep dive, we shift our attention from the academic to the actionable, discussing the tools and preparedness strategies essential for responding to critical incidents. We draw lessons from harrowing events like the Beslan school siege, underscoring the importance of proactive safety measures and the power of training to alter behavior. As you listen, I ask you to not just absorb but to implement change in your environment, enhancing your personal security and that of your community. A deadly terrorist attack in Moscow on March 22 left more than 130 people dead and nearly 200 injured. This was the deadliest mass shooting incident in Russia since the 2004 Beslan school siege. The Islamic State—Khorasan Province (IS-KP) has claimed responsibility for the attack. President Vladimir Putin has said that radical Islamists were behind the attack, and hinted at Ukraine's involvement. So, why are radical Islamists, and the Islamic State in particular, targeting Russia, and why now? G. Sampath is joined by MK Bhadrakumar, a strategic analyst and former diplomat who has served in West Asia.

Debra Javeline (Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame) will present on her book, After Violence: Russia's Beslan School Massacre and the Peace that Followed (Oxford University Press, 2023). Free and open to the public. About the lecture: Starting on September 1, 2004, and ending 53 hours later, Russia experienced its most appalling act of terrorism in history, the seizure of School No. 1 in Beslan, North Ossetia. Approximately 1,200 children, parents, and teachers were taken hostage, and over 330 —nearly one of every hundred Beslan residents— were killed, hundreds more seriously wounded, and all severely traumatized. After Violence is the first book to analyze the aftermath of such large-scale violence with evidence from almost all direct victims. It explores the motivations behind individual responses to violence. When does violence fuel greater acceptance of retaliatory violence, and when does violence fuel nonviolent participation in politics? The mass hostage taking was widely predicted to provoke a spiral of retaliatory ethnic violence in the North Caucasus, where the act of terror was embedded in a larger context of ongoing conflict between Ossetians, Ingush, and Chechens. Politicians, journalists, victims, and other local residents asserted that vengeance would come. Instead, the hostage taking triggered unprecedented peaceful political activism on a scale seen nowhere else in Russia. Beslan activists challenged authorities, endured official harassment, and won a historic victory against the Russian state in the European Court of Human Rights. After Violence provides insights into this unexpected but preferable outcome. Using systematic surveys of 1,098 victims (82%) and 2,043 nearby residents, in-depth focus groups, journalistic accounts, investigative reports, NGO reports, and prior scholarly research, After Violence offers novel findings about the influence of anger, prejudice, alienation, efficacy, and other variables on post-violence behavior. About the speaker: Debra Javeline is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame and a fellow of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, Kellogg Institute for International Studies, Nanovic Institute for European Studies, Russian and East European Studies Program, and Environmental Change Initiative. Her research interests include mass political behavior, survey research, Russian politics, sustainability, environmental politics, and climate change. She focuses on the decisions of ordinary citizens, whether in response to violence or climate impacts, and she is currently exploring coastal homeowner motivations to take action to reduce their risk from rising seas, hurricanes, and other hazards.

Steve Rosenberg is the BBC's Russia editor. After studying Russian at university, he moved to Moscow in 1991 and since then has charted the transformation of the country – from the conflict in Chechnya and the Beslan school siege to President Putin's rise to power and the impact of the current war against Ukraine. His musical passions include - perhaps unsurprisingly - Russian composers such as Rachmaninov, but his choices also draw on childhood memories and the many hours he spent watching TV. Steve is a keen pianist, and he recalls the moment he played for President Gorbachev, who sang Russian songs to his accompaniment. Steve also posts piano improvisations and compositions on social media - anything from Postman Pat in the style of Tchaikovsky to a piece he wrote inspired by birds sitting on a telegraph wire.

Mi chiamo Michele Marchioni e studio letteratura all'Università della Svizzera italiana.

He is the author of fifty books including the New York Times bestselling series One Second After, the Lost Regiment series, and the award-winning young adult novel, We Look Like Men of War. He has also authored numerous short stories and articles about military history and military technology. Dr. Forstchen resides near Asheville, North Carolina.Could ‘Unknown Factors' in Schools Stop Active Shooters in Their Tracks?Washington, D.C., July 25, 2022 — While politicians wring their hands and debate complex gun control legislation, military expert and historian Dr. William R. Forstchen offers a strategy that could be implemented in time for the upcoming school year. “We arm some teachers,” Forstchen said in a recent interview. “We should select people who are ex-military, ex-law enforcement. Train them, train them, train them. Compensate them. Put them in the schools, armed. They become the ‘unknown factor.' I think this could make a major difference.”  Besides exhaustively vetting and evaluating these chosen members of the school faculty, anonymity is paramount. In fact, Forstchen added, “If they ever tell anyone or boast, ‘oh gee I'm armed now,' fire them. You want these people to be anonymous.” Forstchen's perspective is informed by his 45 years of teaching and by the Beslan school siege in 2004 — an Islamic terror attack against a Russian school that left 333 people dead, including 186 children. He believes that arming teachers could serve as a deterrent, or at the very least, a way to stop school shooters in their tracks. “They would be the ‘unknown factor' in every single school,” Forstchen wrote in a recent opinion editorial in The Washington Times. “They would be the men and women who, in those first precious seconds, would react rather than hide, be it against a lone killer or even a trained team of killers. They could buy time for other responders to rush in, rather than wait outside while mayhem runs rampant within.“They would be the ones who would willingly put their lives on the line … but would be the surprise factor in a school that would fight back when seconds counted. They might not stop, but they would at least slow down an aggressor and buy time for a swift response … In so doing, they just might prevent a Beslan massacre from happening here.”   The Beslan incident also prompted Forstchen to write the book, Day of Wrath, which presents the unsettling scenario of ISIS-inspired teams launching a coordinated attack on schools — a threat he views as all-too realistic. William R. Forstchen is a New York Times bestselling author and holds a doctoral degree from Purdue University with a specialization in military history and technology. He is a noted expert historian and public speaker and has been interviewed on FOX News, C-SPAN, and Coast to Coast on topics ranging from history to technology and cultural issues, to space technology development, to security threats. To read the entire op-ed, visit https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2022/jun/7/train-and-arm-teachers-they-would-be-the-unknown-f/. Tjetjenienkrigen – Putins första krig

Militärhistoriepodden

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2022 49:57

From a door enters the presenter, holding some sheets, he ignores the other person, who is sitting in the chair with the carved back, goes towards the aquarium, raises a lid of the aquarium and gives some food to the fish by taking it from a small bowl that is placed on the upper part, on the lid of the aquarium, and then goes to sit down, leafing through the sheets, turns to the guest, a man dressed in an elegant suit, raven black hair, cigarette in hand, smoking, and starts asking him questions. This is how it starts, thus began a witty, crackling exchange, full of quotations, words in French, references, cross-references. These are the first moments of Maurizio Costanzo's interview with Carmelo Bene. I stumbled upon it in one of the newsletters I receive in the morning, to remind me, and everyone, what TV in general, and public TV in particular, was in the position to be, could be in Italy in 1979. One hour of conversation that today would be reserved for the more specialized channels of specialized pay cable television, which instead was fed to the public at night in the late evening of public TV, before there were private TV channels. It was 1979. I remember it well. The program was called 'Acquario' was conducted by Maurizio Costanzo, by a fantastic Maurizio Costanzo, I remember even before 'Acquario' the program 'Bontà loro' [out of the kindness of their hearts], the first talk show on Italian TV, and I remember that I was a child, I was really very young, but I stayed up late because I wanted to see Maurizio Costanzo's 'Bontà loro' I didn't understand a thing but I was struck by the stature of the journalist.

Trigger warning for a long discussion about sexual assault, because this is THAT CHAPTER where Tylin imposes on Mat to the utmost extreme. Today Seth is absent from the recording, and Aradia brings in Gus from Wheel Takes to discuss this infamous scene that generates some of the most hotly contested content in the entire Wheel of Time series. We are not discussing “if” Mat was assaulted, but rather examining how Robert Jordan created a nuanced analysis of sexual assault. After Mat is free to go, he meets up with Nalesean, Birgitte, Beslan and some of his friends, and they go walking through the Festival of Birds, which sounds a bit like Mardi Gras? They are attacked by Darkfriend beggars, then make it to their watching spot for spying on the Kin's base of operations. Mat can't take his mind off of events, and is horrified that Beslean not only knows but approves of Tylin's interest in him. To escape the situation, he randomly follows a Kinswoman, setting in motion the discovery of the Bowl of the Winds, at long last. Growing up in Russia, she helped her mother sell fruit in the market; looked after her sister, who has special needs; and hobbled through a childhood in which her family could not afford to buy new shoes for her growing feet. Then, as in all the best stories, she became a model in her teens, married a British aristocrat, and was all set for her happy ever after. It was during the terrible Beslan massacre, when terrorists seized a Russian school, when she had the realisation that her life – glamorous but empty – needed an opportunity to give back. Her new path of philanthropy was born with the Naked Heart Foundation, which she established to build playgrounds and parks for abandoned, orphaned, disabled and special needs children across Russia and giving hope and support to despairing families.Photographed by the world’s greatest talents and still in demand as a perennial supermodel, Natalia’s Fabulous Fund Fairs continue to support children in need, while other energetic projects include co-founding the Elbi app, for micro donations to a host of charities, and Flo – a women’s health platform.Natalia met her fiancé, Antoine Arnault, on the set of a 2008 Louis Vuitton campaign. They plan to marry this summer, Coronavirus willing. She is looking after the kids’ role in the party, while Antoine is arranging the grown-up aspects. And the wedding dress? Natalia confided in me the inspiration behind the design, but you will have to listen to this podcast to find out exactly what!Produced by Natasha Cowan.Edited by Tim Thornton.Music by @joergzuber.Graphics by Paul Wallis.Production Assistance by Lauren Sweeting.Support for the Creative Conversations podcast comes from the Condé Nast Luxury Conference. To find Suzy's articles visit vogue.co.uk/fashion/suzy-menkes ...find Suzy on Instagram @suzymenkes and Twitter @thesuzymenkes

As RT's editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan runs a news network described by US intelligence as "the Kremlin's principal international propaganda outlet". Formerly known as Russia Today, RT risks being stripped of its UK broadcast licence in the wake of the Salisbury spy poisoning. So who is the woman at its helm? Born into an Armenian family in Krasnodar in Southern Russia, Simonyan grew up in poverty, but her academic achievements helped her win a place on a prestigious exchange program to the United States. Arriving in New Hampshire just four years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the experience changed her life. Initially shocked by the excesses of Western capitalism, Simonyan soon found her feet and was even crowned 'Carnival Queen' of her All-American high school. After returning to Russia, Simonyan started a career in journalism, becoming a household name after reporting from the carnage of the Beslan school siege. Shortly after, when she was just 25, she was handpicked to create the new Kremlin-funded international news network Russia Today. Controversy has dogged the channel, with allegations of pro-Kremlin propaganda and biased reporting, but all agree that under Simonyan's leadership the channel has given Russia a far bigger - and stronger - voice abroad. Married with two children, Simonyan is known by her friends for her love of disco, Cossack folk music and traditional cooking - including boiled beaver's head. Mark Coles asks some of those who know her best what drives her - including her best friend and the American woman who offered to adopt her as a teenager. Mid-Week Meditation #18 - Why Don't We Protect our Schools?

Lloyd shares his thoughts on the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, and why protecting our kids isn't a priority in Congress. So, this week, we saw another school shooting. this time in Parkland, Florida, about 50 miles north of Miami. A disturbed 19-yr-old, who had been expelled for disciplinary reasons, was not allowed on campus with a backpack because of concerns, had a history of mental illness, who was apparently angry about being bullied, and who flew massive red flags on social media took a rifle and lots of magazines to his old school, pulled the fire alarms to get everyone out into the halls, and began opening fire. He killed 17, and wounded another 15 in the 15 minutes it took police to respond. In the end, he was too big a coward to eat a bullet himself, and was arrested without being injured himself. At age 19, the shooter was prohibited from owning a handgun. Unlike Trayvon martin, who posed with real guns he was not allowed to own, this week’s shooter posed with airsoft and pellet guns. But, in one photo which he captioned his “arsenal”, he did have two shotguns, two hunting rifles, and an AR-15 pattern rifle. Where he acquired his rifles, we do not yet know. The minimum age to purchase or possess a long gun in Florida is 18. Students at his former school say they all knew he was a time bomb. That they all saw it coming. He was angry. He was weird. He was always getting into trouble. Ultimately, he was expelled and staff was warned not to allow him on campus with a backpack. So, the school saw it coming, too. It’s not legal to open carry in Florida. Yet he did openly carry the rifle to the school. It’s illegal to carry a firearm onto school property. And yet he did. It’s not legal to shoot people unless it’s an act of self-defense. He did that as well. Chelsea handler and other leftist harpies immediately blamed the NRA. Which shows you what a moronic broken record the left has become when it comes to violence in America. The Left has their mantras. Background checks. Gun bans. Magazine capacity bans. Blame the NRA. All of it bullshit. But the Right has their own mantras, as well. It’s a mental health issue. You can’t legislate evil. Good guys with guns. Background checks are an infringement of muh rights. Much of the right’s favorite catch-phrases are bullshit too. In this case, it was a mental health issue. As was the case in aurora, Tucson, and Newtown. But in all those cases, like this one, the killers were not in the system. Not because the system failed. But because there was no reason for them to be there. You must be committed to a mental institution, or be a felon, or a domestic abuser or have a protective order against you to be denied your 2A rights. None of those applied to the shooter this week. He had apparently seen a mental health therapist, but had never been adjudicated mentally ill or committed to a mental institution. So, how do we stop it? What could have stopped this? Ignore the idiotic ideas on the left about bans and background checks. Like the killers at columbine, this kid was apparently bullied. combined with mental illness, and the recent death of his mother, the fuse for this kid was lit. and it was short. At what point could this have been stopped? The fact is, criminal record or mental illness or none, someone evil enough to consider killing their former classmates at school will find a way to do it. At one of the schools in a system where my wife once worked, a student was found to be plotting a mass-casualty attack. The most detailed plan local law enforcement had ever seen. It didn’t involve knives, or guns. it involved blocking the school’s exits and releasing an airborne toxin, a gas made from household chemicals, fed into the school’s air handling systems. This disturbed student didn’t plan to shoot up the school. That student planned to exterminate every person on the campus like the gas chambers at Auschwitz. She didn’t need a gun. You heard me right…she didn’t need a gun. Her sick plan did not include one. Fortunately, someone discovered her plan and reported it to authorities. Evil will find a way. But our answer can’t stop there. It can’t be to throw up our hands and say, “you can’t legislate evil,” or “we live in a wicked world.” Those things are true. evil exists and it will find a way. The sin in the heart of man is the reason men and women do such terrible things to each other. So, what do we do? Taking away guns from people who do not abuse their rights is not the answer. Killers steal, make and find weapons whether you ban them or not. Magazine capacity bans? The shooter had “countless magazines” according to the local sheriff. Although they have counted them so it’s not like he had a bag of holding from D&D with a warehouse full of mags inside. But clearly, he had a bunch. Like the shooter at VA tech or the one at Sutherland springs. Since he had time to reload multiple times, it doesn’t matter. So, again, what can we do? The sad truth is that acts of evil cannot be prevented. And in this sick society we have created, it should not be surprising. It should be expected. No, children should never feel unsafe in an American school. or any school for that matter. but from Beslan, to Bath Township, to Columbine, to Monash University, to Kauhajoki, Finland, or Emsdetten, Germany, or Dunblane, Scotland, children have been killed in the places they should have been safe. at school. Why? because schools are easy targets for mass killers. There are never armed citizens, thanks to the gun free school zones act. There’s almost never an armed guard or resource officer. The targets, students and teachers, have limited ability to escape. The hallways make it easy to funnel targets into fields of fire. And police will not arrive in time to prevent you from killing lots of people. At this Florida school, it was 15 minutes. By that time, the shooter killed 17, wounded 15, then blended in with his intended victims as they were evacuating. What law would stop this evil? Nothing. You could raise the minimum age to purchase a long gun to 21. Except for members of the military or law enforcement who are under 21, I have no problem with this. But more importantly, we could secure our schools. How did this guy get into the school? Were exterior doors locked? If the school told staff to prevent him from coming on campus, how were they supposed to do that? What plans or precautions were in place to prevent him, or anyone else, from coming into that school with a weapon? He was wearing a gas mask, so maybe they didn’t realize it was him. According to the national center for education statistics, there are over 98,000 public schools in the united states, elementary and secondary schools. NCES stats for 2015-2016 show that 69% of schools had at least one violent incident on campus. 15% had at least one serious violent incident – rape, sexual assault, physical attacks or fights with weapons. 8% reported threats of physical attacks with weapons. But despite those threats, just 72% of public schools has full or part time security on campus at least once a week. not every day. once a week. You may think, hey 72% is higher than I thought. That sounds high, right? Only 52% are sworn law enforcement. And of those, close to 20% are not armed. Only 43% of carry a firearm. Only 48% are full time. This means that over 23,000 schools don’t even have a part time, unarmed security guard. After the Newtown massacre in 2012, the NRA proposed a solution called national school shield. Because the idea didn’t involve gun control and it was proposed by the eeeevil NRA, it was lampooned and ignored. In the six years since, what have we done? Not much. During that time, we have had numerous school shootings and the democrats continue to tilt at windmills, hoping just one more tragedy will move public opinion on gun control. the politics are the important thing. not your kids. School Shield trained its first school three years after Newtown and has apparently done nothing since. either the program is dead, or it was never serious and was just a publicity stunt to divert attention from the gun control debate. From what I can see, it just withered on the vine. There’s no indication, aside from a video and a place to donate money, that the program is even active anymore. My guess is that nobody, not even the NRA, took it seriously. If you want to save lives, we need to secure our schools. Hiring 98,000 officers at let’s say 35000 per year would be a 3.4 billion dollar a year program. That’s a lot of money, I can hear you say. Well, consider that federal agencies waste over 100 billion a year in erroneous tax refunds, Medicare payments and unemployment benefits to people who have jobs. The us government spends nearly 7 million dollars every minute. The department of veteran’s affairs spends nearly 200 million a year on buildings they don’t use. We spent 2 million dollars apiece to train 145 moderate Syrian rebels during the Obama admin. The DOD spent 2 million to develop robots that can play jazz. With the money we wasted on the F-35 joint strike fighter, we could have funded armed schools resource officers for every school in America for 130,000 years. The point is, we would rather waste money on studying world of Warcraft, or cow farts, or studying male prostitutes in Vietnam, or genital washing programs in South Africa or to help Pakistani mango farmers…than we would to protect our children. Because if we protected our kids, where would Democrats get the dead kids they need to push for gun control?

Steven Lee Myers is a columnist for the New York Times and the author of The New Tsar: The Rise and Reign of Vladimir Putin. Myers talks about the life and career of Vladimir Putin from his time as a KGB foreign intelligence officer to his current role as Russian president. The interview covers a wide range of Russian history from World War II to the current conflict in Ukraine.   Key Takeaways: What is a Tsar? Myers explains the historical role of a Tsar in Russia. Vladimir Putin’s upbringing in Leningrad what is called Saint Petersburg today. His early childhood in the Soviet Union. Putin grows up with the legacy of the “Great Patriotic War,” and is exposed to tales of “heroism and suffering.” As he prepares for a career in the KGB, Myers explains that Putin comes of age in the “high water mark” of the Soviet era. Inspired by a movie called The Shield and the Sword, Putin decides to join the KGB. Putin joins the foreign intelligence branch of the KGB in 1975 and is initially stationed in his home town of Leningrad. Later he is sent to Dresden in East Germany. Putin serves in East Germany when the Soviet Union collapses. He watches with “horror” as thousands of protestors overrun the Stasi HQ’s. However, Putin defiantly protects the KGB villa. As Putin returns to Saint Petersburg (formerly Leningrad), he works for a democratic reformer named Anatoly Sobchak, and becomes Sobchak’s deputy. After Sobchak’s electoral defeat in 1996, Putin’s moves to Moscow. Eventually he is appointed by Boris Yeltsin to be head of the FSB, the Russian equivalent of the FBI and the domestic security branch of the former KGB. As Boris Yeltsin looks for a successor, he considers Putin and appoints him as prime minister as a new war in Chechnya begins. Putin becomes Yeltsin’s successor to the presidency. He doesn’t have a strong ideology when he becomes president. Myers characterizes his initial term as “buffet style” politics. However, Putin’s thinking is influenced by silovik thinking, which advocates for strong state security. Terrorism comes to Russia in the form of apartment bombings, metro attacks, the Nord-Ost Theater siege, and Beslan hostage crisis. Myers talks about the way this influenced Putin’s ideas concerning the role of the state. “He sensed weakness and didn’t want to show that weakness.” The Kursk submarine disaster is the first major political setback for Putin. Putin’s disdain for the media is inflamed over this incident. Myers talks about Putin’s growing animosity with America concerning the ABM treaty- https://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/2001/12/20011213-2.html Putin gives a critical speech at the 2007 Munich Conference in which Putin claims “the United States, has overstepped its national borders in every way.” Myers explains that Russia thinks in terms of “spheres of influence.” Was this a warning to the West? http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/12/AR2007021200555.html Watching the events of the Arab Spring, Putin eventually decides to intervene to support the Assad government. A discussion of Russia’s actions in Crimea, and the blend of “hard and soft” power to include information operations, irregular forces, and cyber operations to achieve Russian military objectives. Myers explains that the Ukraine is currently a “frozen conflict,” but the violence has not stopped. Myers discusses other issues to pay attention to such as events in Moldova and Georgia as well as disputed territory between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and current protests in Belarus.   For more information: Check out www.professionalmilitaryeducation.com for links to articles, videos, and other helpful resources. As a child, Ameera Ahmad Harouda wanted to be the first female Palestinian fighter pilot, but as an adult she became a pioneer in the news field instead; starting work as Gaza's first female news fixer in 2005. Ameera's work begins when the violence escalates, and she's now the 'go to' person for many international journalists who need to hire a fixer to help them get into Gaza and gain access to stories and people. Al Jazeera camera woman Alina Gracheva grew up in the former Soviet state of Moldova. She's covered some of the biggest news stories in recent history - the war in Chechnya, the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the invasion of Iraq, but it was the Beslan school siege in 2004, that had the biggest effect on her. Alina says that instead of focussing on the bombs and bullets, camera women can give a different perspective, "they are more likely to notice a mother in the corner, or a child with dirty fingers". On the morning of 1 September 2004, children and teachers all over Russia were getting ready for the first day of the new school year. So begins Timothy Phillips’ account of the terrible siege of School No. 1 in Beslan, North Ossetia. Of course, we know now that that day three years ago which began as a celebration was to turn into the worst terrorist atrocity in Russian history. But although we remember the harrowing scenes filmed by the terrorists in the school gymnasium on the camcorders which proud parents had brought to the parade, and the disastrous, chaotic end to the siege in which so many people died, many of us may have a sketchier understanding of what lay behind those events: Who were the hijackers? What motivated them? And what why did they come to Beslan? These are among the questions that Timothy Phillips tries to answer in his book on the siege. He travelled to Beslan a few months after the siege and spoke to those involved. In the interview, I ask …

Shamil Basayev became involved in the nearby Dagestan War after he lost his bid for president. This prompted Vladimir Putin to launch the Second Chechen War, which successfully reclaimed Grozny for the Russians. Since then, Chechnya has been officially under Russian control, but there is still a strong insurgency. In 2003, Shamil's subordinate launched an attack on a theater in Moscow. 850 hostages were taken and demands were made (the Chechens wanted an immediate Russian withdrawal from Chechnya). After a few days of negotiation, Putin allowed the Russian Spetsnaz to enter. The Spetsnaz pumped a sleeping agent into the theater and knocked many of the terrorists and hostages asleep. The Spetsnaz then entered and killed all of the terrorists. Afterwards, many of the hostages got sick from the gas.In 2004, Shamil's men launched an attack on a school in Beslan. 1200 teachers, parents, and children were taken hostage and held in atrocious conditions for several days. Eventually, the Russians raided the school. Many civilian casualties resulted from the fire that resulted and approximately 1/4 of the hostages were killed. In 2006, Shamil was killed (probably by Russian security forces).
