"When I discuss with senior leaders, interview them, or assess them for senior roles, they often come to me, and I ask them: 'What makes you unique? How do you see yourself?' Eighty percent of them tell me what they can't do. They talk about their development needs, and I say, 'Is that how you pitch yourself? Is that what you really bring to the table? You sit with a headhunter and tell me what you can't do—why not tell me what you're really good at?' Your exceptional value-add, your competitive advantage—that's what makes an impact, not what you cannot do. Development needs require a mitigation strategy, yes, but I believe that focusing on your unique strengths will take you further in your career." - Mark Reinecke Fresh out of the studio, Mark Reinecke, SVP of Top Executive Management and Talent Acquisition at Airbus, shares his approach to the full life cycle of global talent management from acquisition to development and retention. Sheriff Marian Brown sits down with Michael Molthan - M2 The Rock. Sheriff Brown was appointed Interim Sheriff of Dallas County on December 19, 2017 and sworn in on January 1, 2018. Sheriff Brown is the first African-American Sheriff in Dallas County and one of only five African-American female sheriffs in the United States. Sheriff Brown began her career in law enforcement in 1988 with the Duncanville Police Department. She was a pioneer, in that she was the first African-American female hired by the Duncanville Police Department. She quickly ascended in rank, promoting to the rank of sergeant in 1993. While in that rank, she served as a first-line supervisor in the Patrol Division. In 1995, she was assigned to the Community Relations/Crime Prevention Division, where was tasked with creating a Community Oriented Policing Task Force. Other programs managed by Brown included Citizens Police Academy; Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT); Hand-in-Hand and Success Through Accepting Responsibility or STAR Program, (a school-district-wide character education program implemented in ten elementary schools, three intermediate schools, and two junior highs. Each school had an assigned officer to interact with students and emphasize the character trait each week.) Sheriff Brown is known throughout the law enforcement community for her role as a law enforcement trainer/anchor on the Law Enforcement Television Network (LETN), an international law enforcement satellite network based in Carrollton, Texas. Sheriff Brown worked with LETN for ten years, while continuing her service with the Duncanville Police Department. In 1997, Brown was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. She continued to work in the arena of community relations, but eventually returned to the Patrol Division to serve as commander. In 2005, she was assigned to command the Criminal Investigations Division. There, she served until 2007 when she was named to the position of Assistant Chief of Police. She served as Assistant Chief until 2014, when she retired and joined the Dallas County Sheriff's Department to serve as Chief Deputy in charge of General Services. American agriculture contributes about 10 percent of this country's greenhouse gas emissions, but done right, it can absorb rather than produce carbon and help overcome the problem of man-made climate change. This exciting possibility is the subject of a Telluride Science panel moderated by Adam Chambers of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In June 2021 I argued in STAT News that HHS require healthcare providers to publicly disclose their GHG emissions that in turn would help enable the healthcare industry to decarbonize. In order to do this, I argued the the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Energy Star Portfolio Manager tool be exploited. Already well over 50% of hospitals use Energy Star to better manger their energy consumption, i.e., improve their energy efficiency. Energy Star, an online energy benchmarking tool widely used to track commercial building energy consumption - that accounts for 20% of US GHG emissions - was jointly created by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the EPA in 1992 under authority of the Clean Air Act. Energy Star has become the standard against which approximately 40 cities and other governing jurisdictions throughout the US, and authorities overseas including the European Union, measure mandated GHG emission reductions. Energy use is particularly a concern to the US healthcare industry. Among other things, while representing less than 5% of the total area in the commercial sector, healthcare facilities account for over 10% of total energy consumption. This is largely due to the fact US hospitals are on average more than two times more energy intensive as European hospitals. During this 37-minute interview Mr. Reed begins by explaining why Energy Star was created. He proceeds to explain that any building can be benchmarked, how Energy Star Portfolio Manager scores buildings, the meaning thereof and the meaning of an Energy Star "certified" score. He notes scoring can automatically calculate GHG emissions. Mr. Reed next provides an overview of what data elements are required for scoring, discusses the use and benefit by healthcare industry by profiling Memorial Hermann Health System's success, provides Energy Star performance data, for example, savings from avoided energy costs, avoided greenhouse gas emissions and public health benefits, potential use by community health clinics and potential effects of related Inflation Reduction Act provisions. Mr. Clark Reed has been a national program manager for ENERGY STAR® at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) since 1997. His work supports hospitals and other healthcare providers, Fortune 500 companies, and numerous other companies in use of ENERGY STAR to create energy management programs that substantially improve energy performance and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He has managed the EPA's efforts to establish an ENERGY STAR score for acute care hospitals, medical offices, and senior care communities. Mr. Reed has also served on the American Hospital Association's American Society for Healthcare Engineering's (ASHE's) Operational Excellence task force and the steering committees of the U.S. Green Buildings Council and the Green Guide for Health Care. Mr. Reed writes regularly on energy issues for numerous trade publications. He hold an an MA in environmental policy from Tufts University and a BA in economics from the University of Washington. He lives in a certified net zero energy home in Maryland with his wife and son.For more information on Energy Star go to: https://www.energystar.gov/. This is a public episode. In this episode of the South Georgia Insider Podcast, we have an all-star lineup with Valdosta Lowndes Parks and Recreation Authority Executive Director George Page and Marketing and Public Relations Director Jessica Catlett. The VLPRA has a mission to provide superior, affordable recreation services and facilities for residents of all ages in Valdosta and Lowndes County.Page, who has served as executive director for ten years, discussed VLPRA expansion in the past decade."One of the things we looked at was our youth sports," Page says. "How can we get more kids involved? We looked at the idea of school-based sports."Opening this year is the North Lowndes Soccer Complex in Hahira, which includes eight soccer fields allowing for soccer and other programs. The Miracle League Complex at Freedom Park features a two-dimensional rubberized field with fully accessible dugouts, a concession stand, and restrooms. Close to a $7 million project, Page says the majority of funds were raised through donations to the Miracle League of Valdosta. "It's actually the largest Miracle League [field] in the nation, Page says. "It's over two hundred feet long, and also an all rubberized surface, but it's also a multi-use field." Catlett explains, "The Miracle Field is a two-dimensional rubberized field. On a standard baseball field, you have grass, clay, bases, you have things that raise up that make it difficult for a person with a disability to potentially play."The VLPRA also added six new tennis courts at the Harry B. Anderson Tennis Center at McKey, bringing the total to 18 courts. The facility growth has been part of a "build them, and they will come" philosophy to recruit more state, regional, and national tournaments. "In the past several years, we have been successful in luring tournaments to our community," Page says. "One of the things I was tasked to do was go get as many as you can, whenever you can."VLPRA averages 40 tournaments a year. "We have nice facilities, and they were just sitting on the weekend. Number one, our facilities are for our residents; they take priority over any tournament. We play our regular-season games during the week, and on weekends we bring tournaments to town."Page says the tournament represents millions of dollars in economic impact as upward of 2,000 to 3,000 people stay overnight and eat and shop in local businesses. With more than 40 parks located throughout Lowndes County, VLPRA provides added quality of life benefits for individuals and families. Catlett says part of the VLPRA mission is to provide community events, including Movies in the Park and the annual 4th of July Fireworks celebration. This year, VLPRA added the Flag or Freedom on display from Memorial Day to July 4th. There are 50 flags, one of every state, that line a section of the road through Freedom Park as a temporary memorial. This certification helps assure event stakeholders of their venues’ commitment to health safety. As the meetings industry continues to grapple with the many challenges presented by the COVID pandemic, venues are revamping their hygiene practices in order to mitigate health risks for visitors. To help in this effort, a new certificate program from the Global BioRisk Advisory Council, a division of the worldwide cleaning industry association ISSA, has been introduced with the aim of providing meeting planners and attendees the assurance that high levels of cleanliness and safety are being followed. A handful of hotels, convention centers and cities have already signed on to this GBAC Star program, with many more in the process of gaining accreditation. On this episode of Eventful, we speak with Patricia Olinger, executive director of the Global BioRisk Advisory Council, as well as Dominic Bruno, director of facility operations for the Georgia World Congress Center — the first venue to receive the GBAC Star certification. They discuss the steps required for venues to attain certification and why this kind of program is key if face-to-face meetings are to return. Spotify’s Rock Stars are super users, officially recognized by the company and given tools, resources, guidance and perks for answering questions and starting conversations in their online community and helping users on Twitter, through the @AskRockStars account. With more than 150 members, the program will celebrate its fifth birthday next month. Each year, Spotify hosts Rock Star Jam, an event at their head quarters in Stockholm. They fly in the top 10 most helpful Rock Stars to meet company leaders, see whats coming next, offer feedback and enjoy the city. Global community manager Meredith Humphrey has been with Spotify since 2011, starting as a community moderator, and she breaks down the Rock Star Program on this episode of Community Signal. Plus: The shift they made in product announcements to protect community staff How the Rock Star Jam has evolved over the years Meredith’s exploration of what ROI means for community at Spotify Our Podcast is Made Possible By… If you enjoy our show, please know that it’s only possible with the generous support of our sponsor: Higher Logic. Big Quotes On the start of the @AskRockStars Twitter account: “We had this hypothesis that there were super users that preferred Twitter. … We asked four of our stars to try it out, and we had to do a lot of testing to make sure that we could give super users the tools we use for Twitter. … They loved it. It was really successful. They were sending out thousands of tweets because people will obviously just tweet their thoughts. ‘Having a bad day, Spotify is not working.’ They were finding loads of these tweets. … It’s their preferred medium, but we’re reaching out to the customers that prefer that medium, as well.” -Meredith Humphrey On surprise and delight moments on Twitter: “We said to the [super users] that prefer Twitter, ‘Why? What is it that you love about it?’ They said that the folks who are reaching out on Twitter are so pleasantly surprised that they’re getting help. They weren’t expecting it. They were just complaining to the world about something, and when they get this really nice, ‘Hey, I can help you,’ they’re so delighted in a way that community users sometimes aren’t. Community users are there because they have a issue and a question, and they expect a reply. The gratitude and being able to surprise people like that, it really makes [our Rock Stars’] day.” -Meredith Humphrey On the creation of Rock Star Jam: “In 2013, we had this user, he’s no longer in the program, but he made an incredible amount of posts in the community. I think when he left, he was at 50,000, but he had this really amazing system of macros and templates that he used. Super knowledgeable, really friendly guy. Our VP of customer service just said, ‘Let’s fly him out to Stockholm. He’s contributed so much. Let’s introduce him to the founders and the community team.’ We did. He was based in the UK. We flew him to Stockholm, and it was such a great experience on both ends. It was so great to chat with that star and get great feedback and talk to him one-on-one, face-to-face. We said, ‘This was so successful, let’s expand this. Let’s launch a full event for the top 10.’ That’s how it started in 2014.” -Meredith Humphrey On how different departments view community ROI: “My goal as the global community manager is to have a model or multiple models lined up side-by-side that I can show to anyone at the company and they will say, ‘I can get behind these numbers.’ Because I think some teams look at the impact survey and say, ‘This is spot on.’ Other teams say, ‘I have a lot of questions.’ I want to be able to go to any team, any department and they say, ‘These are undeniable, solid numbers.'” -Meredith Humphrey About Meredith Humphrey Originally from South Carolina, Meredith Humphrey received a BA in English with a Journalism minor at Clemson University. She then went on to get a Master’s degree in International Journalism with a Music focus at City University in London. Meredith spent time in the UK writing for various B2B live music industry magazines such as Live UK, Audience and IQ. In 2009, she heard about a new exciting company on the horizon called Spotify. Meredith started with Spotify in 2011 and, since then, has filled many roles in the UK, US, and Sweden – most recently becoming the global community manager in Stockholm. Meredith is passionate about the music industry and helping artists reach new audiences around the world. She’s also equally passionate about trivia nights, tacos, and her cat, Murray.
