Hello and welcome to A Murderess Affair. It's black history month and to celebrate we're talking about Stephanie St. Clair, who battled hardcore mobsters, police-both corrupt and not, and other gangsters who tried to take over the piece of New York she'd carved out for herself and taken control of. She's probably one of the most badass women in history and I've been really looking forward to covering her story.

This episode we talk with the hosts of the popular Topa Talk podcast, which is in its third season and closing in on 100 episodes. Stephanie St. James and Cody Creighton have been delighting and informing their listeners with topics like Ojai's boutique wars, racial protests, coffee shops and hot takes on pop culture. Lots of hot takes. Plus they are Ojai's top Halloween enthusiasts. Besides the engaging and often hilarious subject matter of this podcast, we also wade into the thicket of issues around what Ojai lacks, what makes it great, and dive deep into issues that divide us such as age, gender, politics and identity. We discover that we have a lot more in common than you might think. Plus lots of hot takes on the crucial substantive matter of Erika Gerardi's aggressive bullying of fellow castmembers of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. What about the defrauded widows and orphans, Erika? Did you think that the money to pay the Glam Squad was earned honestly? We did not talk about Lou "Iron Man" Gehrig, Sen. Mitch McConnell or Ice Road Truckers. You can check out the Topa Talk podcast wherever you catch your pods or on Instagram at @topatalk.
Some call it the numbers racket but true believers call it policy banking because the numbers games provide much needed cash flow for economic life in 1920s Harlem. Numbers kings abound, but there is only one Queen, Madame Stephanie St. Clair, a French Caribbean-born self-made black woman. In the fall of in 1929, New York City police who've long taken a cut from the numbers queen, raid her house, rob, and arrest her to send a message. With the police pummeling her on one side and mobster Dutch Schultz, who has been eyeing St. Clair's rising power and wealth pouncing on the other, most people assume Stephanie St. Clair will wave the white flag and bow out. But Madame St. Clair always fights back.Contact us: violentfemmearmy@gmail.comWebsite: violentfem.meFollow ViolentFemme on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/violentfem.me/Follow Rahaleh on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rahaleh/Support this podcast: https://www.patreon.com/violentfemme

Beginning Friday, September 24, it returns for its twenty-fifth anniversary season. The festival continues through Monday, October 4. GUEST: Kristian Salinas and Stephanie St. Sanchez https://www.q-fest.com/We speak with the author Alecia P. Long. An acclaimed new book paints a fascinating portrait of gay life in the American South in the 1950s and 1960s. The book is called "Cruising for Conspirators: How a New Orleans District Attorney Prosecuted the Kennedy Assassination as a Sex Crime." We interview the author, the distinguished Louisiana State University historian Dr. Alecia P. Long. . The acclaimed writer Gary Krist, author of Empire of Sin, has observed of the book, “In "Cruising for Conspirators,' Alecia Long offers us a fresh new perspective on an endlessly enthralling subject—the alleged conspiracy behind the assassination of John F. Kennedy. She reveals how a pervasive and institutional homophobia shaped the prosecution of the only person ever tried in the affair. This is an engrossing and important book, meticulously researched and profoundly relevant to our country's ongoing attempts to grapple with the deep-rooted inequities of its past.”Guest: Alecia P Longhttps://uncpress.org/book/9781469662732/cruising-for-conspirators/?fbclid=IwAR2dE47A7-92uCqT5q-zeXRAkhyLfKNJAvF3MCYsOGkdbmhuY79jEsehU6M

This episode stems from my love of the movie The Wiz. Watching it over and over as a kid I did not realize that Miss One, the Good Witch of the North, is a numbers runner. And, I definitely did not know that numbers running is a real part of gambling and Black history. As a Black woman running numbers in a fictionalized version of Harlem, Miss One unlocks a lot about the real characters behind Harlem's numbers racket in the early to mid 20th century. One of those characters is Stephanie St. Clair. St. Clair was a numbers queen who captivated the media in her fight against police corruption and White racketeers in Harlem. Professor Lashawn Harris, author of Sex Workers, Psychics, and Numbers Runners: Black Women in New York City's Underground Economy, joins me to talk about Harlem's underground economy because that too is Black history. Stephanie St. Clair had become one of the most successful policy bankers in 1920’s New York City. She made a fortune running a Harlem based numbers racket, gaining notoriety along the way. Using her power, wealth, and influence, Stephanie St. Clair built an empire. But change was creeping in from outside Harlem. As outside crime families turned their attention to Harlem, The Queen of the Policy Racket would have to defend her organization against all those looking to take over.
