Lucinda has been a story lover since she and her family watched TV and movies together. Her father taught her how to find the deeper layers of a story. This love prompted her to pursue a double major BA in Religious Studies and Theatre and Speech, a MA in Theatre Arts, and finally a MAEd so she could share her love of stories with her students. She grew up in the Pacific Northwest but has lived in Southern Arizona for over 28 years moving there after a three month trip circumnavigating the globe. Now completely retired, Lucinda writes her weekly blog Sage Woman Chronicles, is working on her second novel, manages her Patreon Community and Apple subscriptions as well as producing the bi-weekly podcast, Story-Power.Takeaways: The podcast emphasizes the importance of storytelling in understanding human emotions and connections. Lucinda's journey highlights how arts education can empower students to express themselves creatively. The shift towards STEM subjects in education often overlooks the value of arts and humanities. Empowerment and resilience are crucial for students to navigate their personal challenges effectively. Lucinda's mentors inspired her to embrace her passions and pursue a career in education. The conversation underscores that learning is a lifelong process filled with valuable lessons. Hello to you listening in Ritzville, Washington!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.Fact: No one can teach anyone how to be a storyteller; although there are many who claim to be able to do just that. But there are people who can teach you how to teach yourself to be a storyteller. I am one of them. Here's how I teach you to teach yourself. We start here: you know the story you want to tell, the ideas you want to clarify, the message you want to amplify; all you need is someone to help listen it out of you; to help you find the words you didn't know you had. Why is this key? Because you're in charge; you're empowered; you will use your own words in your own voice to connect human-to-human. Emotional connection doesn't get any more authentic than that.Over my lifetime I've dedicated myself to helping professionals bring their stories to life in the publishing realm, courtrooms, hospitals, board meetings, or the airwaves. My clients' stories have influenced juries, built markets, spread ideas, and catalyzed change. What's more, I created my 60 Seconds podcast episode method - a niche the world needs - almost 4 years ago and grew it to over 1,000 global episodes.Benefit & Take-away: What's the benefit to you? What will you take away? Your origin or personal brand story for marketing, connection, and influence. A heartfelt story artfully told about how you got from There to Here, the challenges you faced, the goals you accomplished, and why the journey matters so that you, your work and ideas are recognized for the value they are! Your story told with clarity and confidence.CTA: Curious? Let's have a conversation. The abuse of prescription drugs on college campuses has skyrocketed in the last 10 years—and by extension, so too has the intricate ecosystem of college-aged dealers and distribution networks. So today, we're covering a multimillion-dollar fraternity drug ring scandal at the College of Charleston with the investigative journalist, Max Marshall, who covered it in his book, Among the Bros. We talk about power, privilege, and the near-total lack of consequences in this story — and how it serves as a bit of an allegory for the real world. Need a primer on the various names involved in this story? Mikey Schmidt, the main drug plug for the fraternity with connections to cartels in Atlanta, and the contact for the fraternity's distribution networks and runners Rob Liljeberg, a former Eagle Scout who went on to become the president of the Kappa Alpha fraternity Zach Kligman, also known as the "Charleston Kingpin," who would help traffic the drugs into Charleston Patrick Moffly, a socialite, beloved party boy, and son of a big-time real estate developer and a Congressional candidate. Moffly helped create and sell the drugs sold through the fraternity. Transcripts, show notes, production credits, and more can be found at: https://moneywithkatie.com/fraternity-drug-ring. PenPodcast: Inked Conversations with Authors and Industry Experts

Tom Ruwitch is a storyteller, business growth catalyst, and content marketing pioneer. In 2001, Tom founded the email marketing software and services company MarketVolt -- before most business people had even heard of email marketing. He sold MarketVolt in 2019 and founded Story Power Marketing. Today, coaches, authors, and other experts hire Tom to power up their stories because most dish out the same old boring content that turns off prospects, and then they feel frustrated and stuck. So Tom helps them transform content from ignored to adored, turn marketing from frustrating to fun, and convert results from pitiful to profitable. For nearly a quarter-century, Tom helped businesses attract leads, engage prospects, close sales, and maximize relationships. For the last 20 years, he's done this while running MarketVolt, the email marketing software and services firm he founded in 2001. Story-powered content captivates prospects and inspires them to act. Most coaches, consultants, and other experts dish out the same old boring content, put prospects to sleep, and then feel stuck and frustrated. So Tom helps them transform content from boring to brilliant, turn marketing from frustrating to fun, and convert results from pitiful to profitable. Ideas that are discussed in this episode include: How to turn your content from boring to brilliant so prospects tune in and turn on Storytelling for business -- dos and don'ts. Why storytellers sell more and have more fun doing it How to create client-attracting content consistently -- without writer's block Many business people say they don't have an interesting story to tell. How do you respond? I've heard you say, "Storytelling does NOT have to be so complex." What do you mean by that? What's the most important skill/quality you need to be an effective business storyteller? How do you overcome writer's block? How do you come up with content ideas? My audience is serious business people. They don't want to hear stories. How do you respond? Bo Eason is here today. Bo is the author of There's No Plan B For Your A-Game, a book filled with inspiring and practical real-world guidance to teach anyone how to be the best at whatever they choose. Many of you are already familiar with master storyteller Bo. He started his career in the NFL and played with the Houston Oilers and the San Francisco 49ers. After an injury, he had to reinvent himself and begin a new career. He wrote and performed a one-man play called Runt of the Litter, which is now being adapted into a major motion picture. He has trained with some of the world's most brilliant performance and movement coaches, so he can coach others to be excellent presenters and storytellers.  He uses his keynotes and workshops to help others tap into the power of their personal story to become effective and persuasive communicators. I attended his Personal Story Power Event, and it was beyond inspiring. I'm thrilled to interview Bo today. We talk about Bo's story and what it takes to be a great storyteller. We talk about the difference between being an amateur and a professional. These principles apply in sports, your career, or getting sober. Bo breaks down authentic leadership and the trust factor. We talk about vulnerability and being relatable. Bo talks about course correction, how to write our own story, and the importance of playing a bigger game! [05:55] Bo wanted to learn to tell his story the way he physically told it on an NFL field. He began studying what it takes to be a great storyteller. [06:27] He knew he needed to make a living in the civilian world and express himself, but he didn't realize the healing aspects of storytelling. [07:23] The difference between being an amateur and a professional. A professional is willing to make sacrifices and do whatever it takes. [08:13] Storytelling is in our blood. It's the best way to teach and what our ancestors used.  [09:39] We used to trust all of our institutions. Now when we hear them speak, we often wonder if what they are saying is really true. [10:05] The fastest way for a leader to restore trust is to share a personal story. This creates automatic trust. Storytelling has healing aspects. [12:00] Bo's story made a difference to people's lives. Audiences are attracted to your low moments and what it takes to get to the top. People were drawn to Bo's struggles.  [14:59] Exposing your moment can put you in a vulnerable position, but people will also relate to it and trust you. [18:03] People don't trust leadership unless there is some scar tissue on it. [19:44] The new leadership model is the people who've been at the bottom and battled their way to the top. These are people who have scars, and people who we can trust. [22:00] We can't overcome our environment. You can't lose 15 lbs with a chocolate cake sitting in your kitchen, because eventually the willpower will wear off and the environment will win. [23:51] You can change your environment and commit to greatness. Less decisions are better! [31:57] How do you complete a goal? Build an environment, become a pro, and do what you say you're going to do. [33:16] The difference between a pro and an amateur. Pros have no options. When you commit to do something there is no negotiating. Either you are going to do what it takes to become who you want to be or you're not. [37:02] Course correction like an airplane. The autopilot is off course 99% of the time, but it has a built-in mechanism to course-correct. Right the ship from moment to moment. [39:32] You get what you think about most of the time. [40:05] Don't be ashamed to make a goal and be off course, just right the ship. Commit! [41:38] We need to learn to dance with distractions instead of pretending that they're not there. [44:12] Our stories are our destiny. Your personal story, especially the one you keep telling yourself about your life and who you are is your destiny. You get to make the rewrites of your own story. You're the author. [45:56] When writing your own story, make it personal. Make it physical. Give all your spirit when you tell your story. [50:44] The higher stakes game you play, the more you can expect of yourself. We need to play a bigger game. Use words like the best, world-class, and gold medalist. [53:07] Bo shares his morning routine.  [55:38] Start your morning routine the night before to start your day off right. [57:05] Bo talks about his workouts! A light workout like a walk or throwing a ball with his son and then a more rigorous workout.  [59:12] Listeners go to the review section and tell us one thing that resonated with you in this interview. * A graduate of the School of Library and Information Studies, UC Berkeley, Kate Farrell has been a language arts classroom teacher, an author, a librarian, a university lecturer, and a storyteller since 1966. She founded the Word Weaving Storytelling Project, and she has published numerous educational materials on the art of storytelling. Kate edited the anthology, Wisdom Has a Voice: Every Daughter's Memories of Mother, and co-edited two others: Times They Were A-Changing: Women Remember the '60s & 70s and Cry of the Nightbird: Writers Against Domestic Violence. She is past president of the San Francisco Chapter of the Women's National Book Association and a presenter for the San Francisco Writers Conference. * Podcast host Matthew Félix asked Kate about the importance of stories. He also asked about the history of oral storytelling, as well as the resurgence it has enjoyed since the 1970s. * Kate explained the difference between telling a story orally and writing it down, highlighting the role that a live audience has as cocreator in the experience. She also discussed how storytelling foments change, both for the audience and the storyteller themselves. * Storytelling is not just for the stage, but also has practical, day-to-day applications, as illustrated by three types of stories: defining, signature, and personal branding, which Matthew and Kate discussed. * Kate explained the benefits of having a repertoire of stories at the ready for different circumstances. * Kate shared ways of gathering stories, as well as how to choose which ones might best be suited to storytelling. * Matthew asked Kate about the features essential to every story, and they reviewed the seven steps to preparing a story to be told—Kate emphasizing that stories should not be memorized. * Kate shared key things to keep in mind while performing, including important aspects of vocalization and the importance of making eye contact with the audience. * Matthew asked Kate about what she referred to as the cutting edge of storytelling: weaving or braiding archetypes with personal narratives. Today we have a Dear Destination Marriage sent by a listener who is currently experiencing a power struggle.  "Dear Destination Marriage, My husband and I have been married for six years but we're experiencing a shift in our relationship that is stripping us of the happiness we once had and is causing a lot of arguments in our home.  My husband and I both started out building our careers at the same time and came into the marriage with close to a 50/50 equal financial contribution.  Within the last six months my husband has made leaps and bounds with his company and is making great money.  While the increase in our financial pool is wonderful, his control over our finances and disregard for my thoughts on how money should be distributed is creating a great divide.  I feel as though I have no voice and at this point every conversation ends up becoming an argument.  Do you have any thoughts where we go from here?"   Questions: What is the root of this type of behavior? Big head Previous money problems – recently crawled out of a 2020 hole? Added stress of new role – “Innocent” – doesn't realize what he is doing to his wife? Fear of losing everything he's earned?   Can financial power struggles be a sign of other underlying issues? Suggestions:   Don't stop talking to one another - Silence can be dangerous. Take time to listen before responding. Act in love Keep the conversation on topic.   More extreme suggestions if things don't get resolved: Marriage counseling Separate accounts (not sure if they're separate now).

One of the most difficult things to do in all of life is being vulnerable, but vulnerability is the soil that cultivates real love and acceptance. While I often share glimpses of my life and story here and there, I have never really taken a dive into alot of the things that I have shaped me into the person I am today. Some of my closest friends know, but many if not most do not. From a poor (financially) upbringing, going off to college to work as a police officer and trainer. Through divorce, wanting to commit suicide, to leaving a job I loved to moving all the way across country to ultimately become a strength and conditioning coach, all of the little detours ultimately led me to my destiny of sharing Strength with others in all of its wonderful facets. The challenges and struggles have culminated in a philosophy I call the Ethos of Strength. It is about expressing and developing strength in a way that honors the entire person. "The body (person) is one piece" - Coach Dan John (emphasis added mine). I hope that this podcast and my story encourage you in the building of your "bounce" - resiliency and how through powerful conversation and the sharing of your story, we can help one another be the best of ourselves. Love Your Story
Episode 42 Persistence – Why you keep on keepin’ on

Love Your Story

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 5, 2017 25:15

Persistence – the simple key to success I started sending my writing out for publication or sending out queries, while I was still in college: little blurbs on backpacking food and political rock climbing issues. I was willing to write for free. I look at the then and the now, and the one thing I know for certain is that the primary reason I am well published is because of persistence. Because, month after month, year after year, decade after decade I keep writing and I keep sharing, and after 20 odd years the successes add up. But if I’d gotten tired of it and given up after five years, or six years, or ten years, that would have garnered a different outcome. Now, I’m not suggesting that I have fabulous powers of persistent perseverance, because the truth is, writers always write because it’s inherent to who they are. We just keep writing because that’s what we feel like doing, but the lesson, the clarity this brings to me in hindsight, and that I bring to you, is that any time you can just keep going, you will get there. Whatever the reason you keep going–maybe it’s because you are doggedly determined and disciplined, maybe it’s because you are simply compelled to keep on keeping on, like I was, or more likely there is  some other “why” that moves you forward, but consistent persistent forward movement, WILL get you there. There is just simply something to be said for not giving up. One step after another will eventually get you to the top of the mountain. That’s a fact. Today’s episode is about the rewards of downright dogged persistence. The key to the door of success. Stories are our lives in language. Welcome to the Love Your Story podcast. I’m Lori Lee, and I’m excited for our future together of telling stories, evaluating our own stories, and lifting ourselves and others to greater places because of our control over our stories. This podcast is about empowerment and giving you, the listener, ideas to work with in making your stories work for you. Story Power serves you best when you know how to use it Calvin Coolidge said, “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not: unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” What is persistence? It’s starting, it’s continuing even when it gets hard, it is the courage to keep trying after you’ve faced defeat or exhaustion. It’s continued forward movement even when the payoff is not in sight. It takes focus and vision to carry on, day after day with any task or plan from which immediate rewards are not garnered. Persistence is not a trait found in the weak because it’s not easy, therefore not everyone persists. But, it is the foundation of accomplishment. It’s the key that often separates the ones who make it to the top, and those who do not. Let me share a story that I like to call One Grand Night – it contains some grand vistas, a grand sunrise, and some grand pain. Most mountaineers follow a protocol involving permits, backpacks with carefully selected gear, and physical preparation before climbing a mountain.  Not us.  It is our year to summit The Grand, the tallest peak of the Grand Teton Range in Wyoming, and after too many near cancellations of the trip because of logistics, Chad calls and says, “Let’s leave now, we’ll climb all night and summit at sunrise. We won’t even need a permit if we can do it without camping.”  And so we do. It is eleven p.m. by the time we arrive at the trailhead, 5 hours away,–Lupine Meadows parking lot.  The lot is filled with cars, SUV’s, trucks, and vans, the moon reflecting off the dark metal bodies lined like waiting soldiers for their hikers to return. It is high season in the Tetons and climbers must wait in line for a backcountry camping permit on the way up any one of the peaks: The...
