In episode 91, we're excited to welcome, Jordan Smith and Hank Brigham, Co-Founders of SCINET, a decentralized life sciences research and investment platform that revolutionizes the way people do and support science. We discuss how decentralized science, or DeSci, can address the biggest pain points felt by scientists, the role of IPNFTs in scientific research, how Web3 can empower individuals to have a voice in science, some of the most compelling DeSci use cases, and much more.--Three Key Takeaways--Some of the key pain points faced by scientists that Web3 can help address include a lack of funding, lengthy bureaucratic processes for approvals and publishing, the reproducibility crisis, and a lack of transparency and open access to data.IPNFTs present an opportunity for scientists to be open and collaborative with their research while also being able to protect their intellectual property.SCINET is helping build a more inclusive and fair system of science by giving everyone an opportunity to have a voice in scientific research, to invest in research important to them, and by shifting the power from traditional institutions to scientists and the community.--Full shownotes available at--https://www.cryptoaltruism.org/blog/crypto-altruism-podcast-episode91-scinet-how-blockchain-will-revolutionize-the-way-people-do-and-support-science--This episode is brought to you by Koinly--Koinly makes doing your crypto taxes easy!Check out Koinly: https://koinly.io/?utm_source=affiliate&via=EB5412D2--Buy us a coffee!--Help us out by buying us a coffee:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cryptoaltruism--Support us with a Crypto Donation--ETH(ERC20) - cryptoaltruism.eth (0xac5C0105914F3afb363699996C9914f193aeDD4A)Other tokens: cryptoaltruism.org/supportus--DISCLAIMER --While we may discuss specific web3 projects or cryptocurrencies on this podcast, please do not take any of this as investment advice, and please make sure to do your own research on potential investment opportunities, or any opportunity. The Texas Biomedical Forum started in 1970 as a group of women on a mission – to support the hope and promise of life-saving research at Texas Biomedical Research Institute. What started as the brainchild of a handful of women has turned into an organization that is more than 300 members strong. The Forum raises hundreds of thousands of dollars each year in support of the science at Texas Biomed. From left to right: Jody Lutz, Tena Gorman, Ruth Eilene Sullivan, Courtney Percy The purpose of the Texas Biomedical Forum continues to be to support the Texas Biomedical Research Institute through community relations, volunteer services and fundraising. The Forum hosts student tours of the 200-acre Texas BioMed campus for a handful of high school science programs each year. These tours of San Antonio’s biomedical research jewel expose these bright young students to the exciting possibilities of a career in science. The student tours are a fantastic opportunity for area high school students, and a rewarding experience for Forum volunteers. For the past 21 years, the Texas Biomedical Forum and the V.H. McNutt Memorial Foundation have joined forces for the Science Education Awards. Local public and private high school teachers are invited to participate. The awards are given to the top six teachers whose proposals demonstrate the strongest commitment to the scientific process and the further development of progressive science education programs. The Forum’s commitment to educating its membership and the community about Texas Biomed’s research is highlighted at the fall and spring Lecture Luncheon events featuring Texas Biomed scientists discussing timely research topics. Held at The Argyle, the lectures inform members and guests about innovative medical topics and the cutting-edge research taking place at Texas Biomed and its positive impact on human health. All Forum members as well as guests are invited to participate in these educational events. The Forum in partnership with Texas Biomed hosts a Roundtable Discussions evening event annually at The Argyle. These events feature the work being done by a handful of the Texas BioMed research scientists. Attendees are afforded the incredible opportunity of sitting alongside a scientist with the ability to ask questions regarding their current project. This is truly a unique experience where anyone can learn about the exciting research that in ongoing at Texas BioMed in a congenial environment. Forum members and guests are welcome to attend. The first Saturday in May annually marks the occasion of the Forum Gala. One of the most sought after event gala tickets in the city. This is the primary fundraising tool of the Forum. Every summer, the Forum presents Texas Biomed with a sizable check from that year’s Gala proceeds. These funds are then distributed to select scientists in support of their research needs. The Forum sponsors a series of one-year pilot projects that can lead to subsequent and often significant federal research funding. Over the last sixteen years, the Forum has provided over $3 million. The results of those pilot studies has generated an additional $60 million in grant funding for Texas Biomed. The impact of the Forum’s fundraising efforts through the Gala and Forum Grants is a valuable component in furthering Texas Biomed’s mission of enhancing lives through research.
Ocean Day is this Thursday, which is a time to reflect on what we can do to help our Oceans. I have a solution and I talk about it during this episode. I also talk about Cities and States resisting against Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris Accord. How can they do that and still follow the Paris Accord? I will chat about that as well. Finally, I answer a question that was posed to me in the Fish Nerds Facebook Group about how cod are recovering and how to we know when they have fully recovered. A great question that I take the time to answer with a well timed article. Enjoy the podcast! It's been a tough couple weeks for the US environment as Trump's budget defunded key coastal programs such as the Coastal Zone Management Program and the Sea Grant Program. He also announced that the US will start the procedure to pull out of the Paris Climate Change Agreement. Nathan Johnson and I talk about the benefits of the CZMP and the Sea Grant programs and what will be lost with the defunding. We also talk about how Trump and his administration did not fully understand the report where they cite why the US doesn't benefit under the Climate Change Agreement. The Government of Canada recently made some ambitious goals to protect 10% of their coasts by 2020. I speak to Dr. Rodolphe Devillers to discuss the challenges the Canadian Government and other governments face when establishing Marine Protected Areas. Some of the challenges we discuss: 1) Will protected areas only be designated where human activity is absent to implement them faster? 2) Should the MPAs designated be connected ecologically? Is the increase of Grey Seal Population on Cape Cod causing problems with humans? I was asked to answer a question as to whether the science says Grey Seals are preventing the cod stocks in the Northeast from recovering. I answer this question using a Canadian example. Who Should Lead the Ocean Conservation Movement? Bill Nye has been undergoing heavy criticism from the non-scientific AND the scientific community as to whether he should lead the Climate Change science movement. Should he be a leader? Is he harming the movement? I also address this during the show. Trump trumps the EPA Again! He is at it again. Replacing scientific experts with fossil fuel industry representatives...ugh! Social media is a beast to understand all of the different platforms. When to post, how many times, who should you target are all things to consider; however, the point of Social Media is to become social. You want to engage with other people to have valuable discussions that make both your lives better. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. There are time where the other people misinterpret your meaning or you are not clear on the point that you are trying to make and people get mad...that happened to me and I talk about it today. Also, there is a weird ocean story about an Adult Film star in a shady cage, who got bitten by a lemon shark..truly bizarre. Finally, I talk about a study where fish are changing behaviour to be closer to Marine Protected Area (MPA) boundaries. Enjoy the podcast! There is a big problem in San Francisco Bay: A number of sharks and other fish are washing ashore dead. Sean van Sommeran is on the front lines making sure each fish is processed and analyzed to find out why. Sean's organization, The Pelagic Shark Research Foundation, is partnering with the Marine Mammal Center and some researchers who specialize in fish health to help determine why a number of different sharks such as leopard sharks, white sharks and other fish (eagle rays, etc.) are washing up on the shore dead. These strandings have bee occurring for the past 5-6 weeks and it's not the first time this type of stranding event has occurred. Listen to the podcast to hear more on why these sharks and other fish are dying this spring. Enjoy the podcast! Even the good news is not that great. Here is the breakdown of the episode: 1) 41 Humpback whales washed ashore dead over the past year (average is 14). Scientists are looking into it; 2) Orcas hunt Grey Whale calf like they are supposed to, but headline makes it seem like they are killing for fun; 3) How to be better scientists, activists, advocates or conservationists. I am joined by Clark McNulty who co-founded Oceans Global with his siblings after a family tragedy to help the ocean and people. After their brother Kirk passed away from a drug overdose, the McNulty family wanted to expand on his legacy as an Ocean Lover (a water classman, surfer and inspired by everything ocean) and help people who were struggling with drug addiction get better. They created Oceans Global, which is a non-profit organization that builds programs to help patients of rehabilitation facilities become inspired by Ocean Activities and Conservation projects. Wow, 300 episodes! Publishing 300 episodes is something that I never thought that I would be able to do. A year and a half ago, I published my first podcast to help people understand what was happening with the Ocean and what solutions they could implement to help resolve the problem. Now, after 300 episodes and over 70K downloads, the Speak Up for Blue Community has grown into a force that is out to protect the Ocean. Nathan Johnson, Dr. Lyne Morissette and Dr. Edd Hind-Ozan join me on this special Ocean Talk Friday to discuss the following topics: 1) Should we pay to get experience in Marine Science and Conservation to benefit our careers? 2) Is BREXIT good for managing fisheries? 3) Is the March for Science good for Science? 4) Conservation vs Animal Rights 5) Is downlisting a Species At Risk good or bad for Species Risk Management (Manatee as an Example). Doug Parsons is a Climate Change Adaptation Expert and the host of the podcast America Adapts, A Climate Change Podcast. We talk about Climate Change in a Trump world and how to focus on adaptation. I am delighted to have Doug on the podcast as he is a scientist and another podcaster (we podcasters have to stick together). I think it's critical for Doug's podcast to exist because we need to go beyond the faux debate of whether humans are contributing significantly to climate change and discuss the ways that we can adapt to the consequences and reduce our influence. Bradley MacDonald joins me on this Episode of Ocean Talk Friday to talk about how the Meat production industry in contributing to Climate Change. Speak UP For Blue community member, Randi Gustafsson, requested that I speak about the meat production the way it is conducted today. He also proposed that we should all stop eating meat to reduce climate change. I invited Brad to join me on this episode because he writes about sustainability in today's world and new much more about the subject than I do. Plus, I feel that I am biased on this issue because I enjoy eating meat. During the podcast, we discuss how meat production contributes to climate change; how smaller, local farms can be a better option; and, where to find knowledge on nutrition that is not biased. We, as science communicators; scientists; and, conservationist, tend to focus on the doom and gloom of conservation, the "What's not going right with the environment." However, people don't respond to that much. In fact, they tend to ignore it because they don't want to here negative things all the time. They need hope. Earth Optimism provides that hope because it demonstrate that the Earth can be fixed. Enjoy the podcast! This week Pete Consigli was in Pittsburgh and sat down with the Z-man and Radio Joe in Studio C for a retrospective conversation about the almost 4 decade relationship between these two restoration industry icons. This show could be characterized as ¢??Restoration Confidential¢??, it was personal, insightful, controversial at times but most of all came from the heart with a spirit of setting the record straight on many of the industry¢??s misnomers and folklore! Listen in as two of the industry¢??s most well known and colorful personalities sit down to reflect on their professional life together as they come to the realization that in their twilight years there is still much to be done and their ¢??work¢?? is still in progress! This was a tremendous show that gave us a peak into Consigli and Zlotnik¢??s Restoration Journey with a destination yet to be realized. We will finish the story with another special show following Summer Camp on August 7th at noon eastern. IAQ Radio listeners know Pete as a friend of the show and the Global Watchdog who helps recruit guests and support their interviews that address issues facing the restoration industry. The recent passing of industry icon Marty King who founded the original restoration industry trade group in 1971 leaves Pete and Cliff as the only remaining honorary members of RIA. Next year Pete and Cliff will celebrate 2 milestones with RIA¢??s 70th Anniversary Convention in March and the 20th anniversary of Summer Camp in August. As IAQ Radio listeners may know, this past March in Dallas IAQA inducted Pete into its Hall of Fame for his work with Joe Lsiburek¢??s legendary Building Science Symposium known as Summer Camp. What most listeners don¢??t know is that Cliff was there with Pete for the first Summer Camp in 1996 as the 2 invited representatives from the restoration industry! Pete and Cliff talk about the milestone events that helped shape the industry that you know today and give IAQ Radio listeners an insiders view on how, why and when things happened! During Parts 1 & 2 Pete, Cliff and Radio Joe sat down at the ¢??kitchen table¢?? and had a retrospective conversation providing the background on the most pressing issues the industry faces today. During Part 3 August 7th Radio Joe will press Pete and Cliff to finish the story and share their vision for the future of the industry with IAQ Radio listeners.
