There's a wide range of topics this time on the Off Shore Tackle podcast as we talk with Jason Graham of Send It Charters and Linwood Beach Marina. Jason is a former bass tournament angler turned walleye Charter Captain. He runs ice charters on Saginaw Bay in the wintertime, trolls the Bay in spring and summer...then heads to Lake Michigan each fall to chase salmon. Graham talks about the challenge of finding fish through the ice and why he prefers trolling to cover more water. Jason says he wouldn't be as successful without his Off Shore products and describes his trolling set up for walleye and salmon.

For this episode of the podcast I spoke with Craig Holdrege and Ryan Shea of the Nature Institute in Ghent, New York about the theory and practice of a very different way of doing science, informed and inspired by the work of the great German poet, scientist, and statesman, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In contrast to the reductionist paradigm of science as it is often practiced elsewhere today, the Goethean approach seeks a perspective on nature characterized by wholeness and interconnection through a sensitive and self-aware methodology in which the relationships between the phenomena and the observer are not forgotten. Craig was a visiting instructor at Thoreau College in 2020 and we are very excited to welcome Ryan to Wisconsin as guest instructor this coming spring during our Spring 2025 Metamorphosis Gap Semester.Craig Holdrege is the Nature Institute's director and spearheaded its founding in 1998. His passion is to develop what Goethe called “delicate empiricism” — an approach that learns from nature how to understand nature and is infused with a cautious and critical awareness of how intentions and habits of mind affect human understanding. Craig carries out studies of animals and plants that tell the story of these organisms as dynamic and integrated beings within the larger web of life. He has written many articles and books, including Seeing the Animal Whole—And Why It Matters, Do Frogs Come from Tadpoles? and Thinking Like a Plant. Before co-founding The Nature Institute, Craig was a high school biology teacher in Waldorf Schools, working in Germany for 12 years and then in the U.S. for nine years. Since the early 1990s, Craig has been involved in teacher training. Craig has a Ph.D. in sustainability education from Prescott College in Arizona. He completed a Masters-level, non-degree program in phenomenological science at the Science Research Laboratory at the Goetheanum, Switzerland, and has a B.A. in philosophy from Beloit College.Ryan Shea taught at Providence College for eight years, including courses in philosophy of science, environmental philosophy, and nature writing. He has B.A. and M.A. degrees in philosophy. He brings to his work at The Nature Institute a broad knowledge of ancient philosophical biology (especially Aristotle), the scientific revolution, phenomenology, German idealism, and Goethean qualitative science. Ryan has been interested in Goethean Science since he was a teenager. He began working part-time for The Nature Institute in spring 2023 and is full-time as of September 2024. He is excited to now have the opportunity to develop Goethean practice through research and teaching. He is interested in pursuing the nature of metamorphosis in different realms of the living world, and what it means to read the “book of nature.” Nature Institute: https://www.natureinstitute.org/Metamorphosis Gap Semester - Spring 2025 - https://thoreaucollege.org/metamorphosis-spring/

For years, we've been asking, "Which came first: the chicken or the egg?" Maybe what we should have been asking is, "Which came first: the frog or the tadpole?" A new paper in the journal Nature details the oldest known tadpole fossil. Ringing in 20 million years earlier than scientists previously had evidence of, this fossil might get us closer to an answer.Have another scientific discovery you want us to cover on a future episode? Send us a textAndrea and Paulette are back, and this time, they're schooling us on two things: Andrea's eager-but-clueless helper and, well, let's just say some tadpoles didn't make it out alive. Tragic but hilarious.Just when you think it's safe to get back in the water, BAM! You get hit with a Biolab update. You know, the place that had that massive fire. Trying to get things back on track after that has been a mess. Things are looking up, according to this Press Release.Picture this: Andrea's got a new guy on the team, right? And this guy is the definition of enthusiastic ignorance. He doesn't know squat about pool service, but he's like a sponge—ready to soak it all in, except maybe some chlorine, 'cause I think he missed that memo. The whole time, Andrea's like, “I appreciate your effort, but please, for the love of God, stop messing with the equipment before you turn the filter into a Space X rocket.”And speaking of science experiments… let's talk tadpoles. RIP to those little guys. Yeah, apparently, while learning the ropes, the new guy thought it was totally normal to skim out frogs and their tiny swimming babies with, like, zero remorse. Andrea tried to stop him, but at some point, you gotta just let it happen and give the tadpoles a funeral they didn't ask for. "And here we lay these little amphibians to rest—plop—in the chlorine-soaked afterlife. May they hop in peace."Andrea and Paulette just wrap it up like, “So yeah, tadpoles dead, chlorine shortage is a concern, and this new guy… still has no idea what he's doing. But he's learning!” It's like a reality show where the stakes are lower, but the laughs are higher. Support the showThank you so much for listening! Oh ho! We haven't done a Steven Kellogg re-illustration title since Pinkereton, Behave! back in 2021! This is particularly strange as The Mysterious Tadpole was always, without a doubt, a favorite Kellogg picture book of Betsy's when she was a child. For various reasons we were never able to discuss it on Fuse 8 n' Kate... until today! We consider the original 1977 edition of this book versus the 2004 update. Now I must warn you that this episode sort of jumps into Betsy and Kate talking about cicadas (again), partly because they're awesome, and partly because the first part of this episode acquired some odd sound issues, so we had to cut out the very first part. Apologies! In this episode we discuss whether or not Alphonse became less cute in the new edition, why the parenting in this new edition is so angry, and why Kellogg felt it necessary to enroll his tadpole in obedience school. “Tadpoles” swim through the Orion Nebula, a giant stellar nursery more than 1300 light-years from Earth. Like tadpoles, they're not yet fully mature. Also like tadpoles, not all of them will survive their hostile environment. The tadpoles are known as protoplanetary disks – proplyds for short. They're giant “cocoons” of gas and dust. Each one envelops a central star that's still being born. And some of them may give birth to planets. The proplyds look like tadpoles because they're being sculpted by the radiation of nearby stars. The stars are exceptionally hot and bright. They produce a lot of ultraviolet radiation. The UV acts like a blowtorch, blasting the proplyds. The side of a proplyd that faces the stars is hot and bright, so it forms the “head” of the tadpole. The “tail” is formed by gas flowing away from it. The proplyds are quite young – no more than a couple of million years old. Their central stars are still taking shape. Many of them shoot out “jets” of hot gas from their poles that are billions of miles long. A disk of cooler gas and dust may surround the infant star. If it survives the blowtorch, the disk may give birth to planets – worlds born from the remains of stellar tadpoles. The Orion Nebula is visible to the unaided eye. It looks like a wide, fuzzy star in Orion's Sword. Orion is in the east and southeast at nightfall, with the sword to the right of its three-star belt.
