Today I talked to Ben Kaplan about his new book (co-authored with Danny Parkins) Pipeline to the Pros: How D3 Small-College Nobodies Rose to Rule the NBA (Triumph Books, 2024). Jeff Van Gundy. Brad Stevens. Frank Vogel. Mike Budenholzer. Tom Thibodeau. Sam Presti. Leon Rose. Before you knew his name, before he drafted your favorite player, before he guided your team to a championship, he had a playing career of his own at an NCAA Division III college. He didn't play for fortune – the NBA was out of reach, and his school didn't even give athletic scholarships. He didn't play for fame – his games weren't televised, and the stands were rarely full. Whatever the motivation, he simply couldn't give up the game of basketball. And that didn't change after graduation, when it was time to pick a career path. For the first time in league history, NBA coaches and general managers are just as likely to have played Division III basketball as they are to have played in the NBA. While the number of former D3 players working in the NBA is higher than ever, small college alums have served in leadership positions since the league's founding. They shaped the NBA into what it is today, playing integral roles in the Lakers' initial success in Los Angeles, the inception of several expansion franchises, the creation of the popular All-Star Weekend dunk contest, the globalization of the league, and more. Their improbable and inspiring journeys tell a bigger story – the history of small college athletics, the evolution of coaching and management in the NBA, and the hiring practices in the most competitive fields. Their alma maters were small, but their impact on the game, and the implications of their success, loom large. Paul Knepper covered the New York Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020. If not for you I'm not sure where this thing would have gone. I had never heard of TJ Rives until he appeared on my cell phone offering his help in guiding 143 podcasts over three years. Well done younger man. There's no sense of melancholy here though I wish I had more guests to interview. Some declined, others never bothered to respond but the nearly 100 I corralled managed to turn this project into a rousing success. And they weren't just from the broadcast industry. There was an umpire, hockey franchise owner, PA announcer, national anthem singer and baseball executive, among others. There were absolute legends such as Brent Musburger and Bob Costas and women who have had a dramatic impact on our industry.Through it all I had a blast. Each podcast involved around 8 hours of work, more than half of it editing while scouring for sound bites that fit the conversation. And there three others who were very involved in this podcast. Thank you Will Hatczel, Tatiana Shinkan and Nick Tocci. But most importantly you, the listener, some of you who took the time to comment on social media. I really appreciated that. And I wrote a book on the podcast, “Tell me a story I don't know: Conversations with Chicago sports legends” which is available on Amazon Books. Deshaies spent 12 seasons pitching in the big leagues, half of them with the Houston Astros who were then in the National League. Shortly after he retired, JD found himself in the Astros TV booth as an analyst and 16 years later, found himself in the same position at Wrigley Field. He's been with the Cubs for the last 11 seasons adding keen observations while keeping a dry sense of humor. “Mark Grace lost his gig in Arizona," Deshaies says on the show. "The Diamondbacks came hard after Bob Brenly, (who had been with the Cubs) and Len Kasper, the teams lead TV voice said how would you like to come here?” Deshaies said yes and for the last 11 seasons has worked with Kasper and most recently, Jon “Boog” Sciambi. “ Boog's great. We have a lot of fun.”JD has also watched this Cubs team do something few expected them to do, contend for a playoff position Deshaies notes how free agents such as Cody Bellinger and Dansby Swanson have made a huge difference. Bellinger signed a one year deal and Deshaies knows it will take a big number to keep him, especially with Scott Boras as his agent. Now 63, Deshaies has no intentions of retiring. #104: Chris Michalowski & Jorge Capestany - What was the one thing that altered the direction of your life?

From time to time, The Coaching Podcast understands that we all lead busy lives, and sometimes you might have less than 10 minutes in your daily schedule to listen to The Coaching Podcast for inspiration. Therefore, our guest coaches this week are Coach Mick (Chris Michalowski) and Jorge Capestany - performance coaches who walk their talk. With years of coaching experience, these bite-sized interviews, from years ago, still hold true today when we reflect on their responses as to what makes a great coach: Coach Mick (1 min, 50 seconds) - believes that a great coach has passion, compassion and empathy. Coach Capestany (4 mins, 58 seconds) - believes that a great coach can see possibilities, is a lifelong learner and can customize their content to meet the needs of the learner. Emma is very grateful to Jorge and his wife, Coach Marty, for their hospitality of love over the years and for introducing her to Coach Mick during a Polar Vortex in Michigan when they were both speaking at a high school conference. You can learn more about each coach below: Coach Mick, Chris Michalowski, USPTA Elite Professional & USTA High Performance Coach From Coach Mick: My ultimate goal is to get to know you better, but first I will fill you in on who I am, just to break the ice. My name is Chris Michalowski. I am a USPTA Tennis Professional and Director of Tennis at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa (click here to see) in one of the most pristine areas of Northern Michigan. Next to my faith, wife and family, tennis is a passion of mine that I hold dear to since I started playing, seriously anyway, at the age of 13. Tennis really broke me out of my shell and gave me confidence in many different areas of my life. I became a ranked junior player and was one match away from winning a state championship in high school. Three years after I started playing, I started teaching at the Midland Community Tennis Center, in Midland Michigan. It is known as one of the top clubs in the nation and recently, Midland won the “Best Tennis Town” by the United States Tennis Association. I loved to teach and wanted to learn as much as I could about the game (it helped my playing too). I knew that teaching was in my future, but my coach at the time encouraged me to stay in Architecture, my other career consideration , because of the long hours and the toll tennis takes on the body. I was accepted into the University of Cincinnati's architecture program, which was rated very high at the time, but the long hours in the studio kept me from playing and teaching. While at Cincinnati, the Ferris State University coach called and informed me that he wanted me to play on the team and take part in their new Professional Tennis Management program, the first ever, endorsed by the United States Professional Tennis Association. I was all over it. I walked through the doors and from there, never looked back. I was a member of the varsity mens team and when I wasn't hitting, I was absorbing all I could to become the best possible teaching professional that I could be. I am still that way and it drives my wife crazy sometimes. But to be honest, I feel that you can never stop learning and becoming even better at what you love to do. I have remained at the resort for 25 years as the director and was a director in the summertime (for 4 years) at one of the most prestigious country clubs in the Midwest at the time. Two jobs was a lot to handle so I decided to stay here where I feel like I was called to be. Thankfully, I stayed or I would not have met my incredible wife and parent four great kids we have been blessed with. One thing that I will always stand by, just like playing a match, is that when you are up 5-2 in the set, remember how you got there and keep doing the things that got you there in the first place. Don't change your game style at a critical time, especially when you are so close to winning the set The same goes for my outlook on teaching and my career. I still average close to 40 hours a week on the tennis court, manage a staff of 12 teaching professionals/instructors and stay active building tennis in my community with sore knees and all. I love being out there and that is what got me to where I am today, so why change things at 5-2 in the set? Do I consider myself an expert? The industry has said yes, but it is not that simple because tennis has changed over time and keeps advancing in exciting ways. I feel that it is important for teaching professionals, like myself , to stay in tune with sport science, new trends and teaching techniques, technology and new ways of teaching the game so that I can stay on top of “my game.” If I taught the same way I did 20 years ago, things would be very different for me right now and I would not have the opportunities and successes that I have been blessed with. Even as a USPTA Midwest Tester, I still learn something each time we administer the teaching exam to new tennis professionals. So what does all this mean? It means that through the use of technology and my knowledge and relationships that I developed with experts from around the world, I hope to be able to have a relationship with you and help in any way that I can to take your game to the next level. When Lily and Alex entered a packed gymnasium in Queens, New York in 1972, they barely recognized their son. The boy who escaped to America with them, who was bullied as he struggled to learn English and cope with family tragedy, was now a young man who had discovered and secretly honed his basketball talent on the outdoor courts of New York City. That young man was Ernie Grunfeld, who would go on to win an Olympic gold medal and reach previously unimaginable heights as an NBA player and executive. In By the Grace of the Game: The Holocaust, a Basketball Legacy, and an Unprecedented American Dream (Triumph Books, 2022), Dan Grunfeld, once a basketball standout himself at Stanford University, shares the remarkable story of his family, a delicately interwoven narrative that doesn't lack in heartbreak yet remains as deeply nourishing as his grandmother's Hungarian cooking, so lovingly described. The true improbability of the saga lies in the discovery of a game that unknowingly held the power to heal wounds, build bridges, and tie together a fractured Jewish family. If the magnitude of an American dream is measured by the intensity of the nightmare that came before and the heights of the triumph achieved after, then By the Grace of the Game recounts an American dream story of unprecedented scale. From the grips of the Nazis to the top of the Olympic podium, from the cheap seats to center stage at Madison Square Garden, from yellow stars to silver spoons, this complex tale traverses the spectrum of the human experience to detail how perseverance, love, and legacy can survive through generations, carried on the shoulders of a simple and beautiful game. Allison Glock is the type of writer who succeeds in a variety of genres. She writes young adult fiction. She's an executive producer for the NBC series “The Blacklist.” She's written for the New Yorker and Garden & Gun magazine. She's written poetry, and produces short documentary films. In this episode, we start off by talking about an essay she wrote for espnW at the end of 2020. The essay, “Walk, run, or wheelbarrow: We moved our bodies forward during the pandemic,” is about how we dealt with COVID in the days when we were locked down. That essay leads off the new sports anthology series “The Year's Best Sports Writing 2021.” That's a new series started by Glenn Stout. The series, published by Triumph Books, continues the tradition carried on by “Best American Sports Writing,” which ended its run in 2020. Stout talks about the new series at the end of this episode. Glock got her start doing longform narrative for magazines, but has transitioned to film and TV out of economic necessity. She's doing amazing work there, including her work on The Blacklist, and videos made by her production company, Holler Beach Productions. One of the videos produced was about southern women.

As the strength and conditioning coach for the Yankees for parts of three decades, Jeff Mangold was firmly embedded in building the dynasty of the 1990s and 2000s. Mangold had a front-row seat to the daily drama of Steinbrenner's revolving door of managers—Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, and Lou Piniella—during his first stint with the team in the 1980s. Then, when he returned to the Yankees in 1998, he joined a juggernaut of a team and was tasked with maintaining the health of a star-studded roster including Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera. Yankees fans will not want to miss Power and Pinstripes: My Years Training the New York Yankees, which gives readers a unique perspective on the franchise during one of baseball's most exciting and controversial eras. About the Author: Jeff Mangold served as the head strength and conditioning coach for the New York Yankees from 1984 to 1988 and from 1998 to 2006. During his tenure, the Bronx Bombers won nine straight American League East titles, appeared in five World Series, and won three World Series championships in 1998, 1999, and 2000. Peter Botte has been writing about New York sports for over 30 years, covering the Yankees, Knicks, and Islanders. He currently writes for the New York Post. In 2009 the Yankees felt the weight of going almost a decade since their last World Series Championship.  After missing the playoffs the year before, the Yankees branded their annual goal very specifically.  “Mission 27” they called it, the drive for the franchise’s 27th World Series championship. That is also the title of  the new book from veteran beat writers Mark Feinsand and Bryan Hoch, “Mission 27: A New Boss, A New Ballpark, and One Last Ring for the Yankees Core Four,” available  now from Triumph Books. This episode of 30 With Murti is a roundtable discussion with the authors about that championship season, and a dive into the book that brings new life and behind the scenes detail to the Yankees last championship run.
