Pilgrims crawl a half-mile uphill to a famous church, seeking healing. Steve reflects on desperation, hope, and faith across traditions, he draws on MLK's words: "If you can't walk, crawl—but keep moving forward." Hey, Heal Squad! It's another edition of What Worked This Week, and this one might be Maria's favorite yet. Fresh off her trip to Greece, she's sharing the biggest lesson she didn't expect to learn: sometimes the best things happen when you stop planning every minute and leave room for life to surprise you. From a spontaneous visit to the healing island of Tinos to setting healthier boundaries with herself, Maria explains why protecting your peace might be the key to finding yourself again. She also shares her favorite Greece travel recommendations (including the breathtaking Odera Hotel and why Tinos belongs on your bucket list)!, why stargazing, family time, and meaningful conversations ended up being the most memorable parts of the trip, and how even work felt different once she stopped rushing and let her vacation unfold naturally. Plus, she's rounding up all the practical things that actually worked this week…travel wise! Like,  the viral Sudoku Packing Method that helped her pack lighter, Kevin's portable cooling fan that became her travel MVP, and the simple circadian rhythm trick she swears helped her beat jet lag. She also shares the sweet language hack that had Athena speaking more Greek than ever before! Such a fun update on life right now for Maria and we hope you enjoy it! This is the eighth installment of my book The Constant Procession. You'll hear it this summer for free from cover to cover in 15-minute podcast drops every Tuesday morning! To listen from the beginning, search for Episode 512 at NikosSteves.com.  Part 8 continues with apparitions experienced by Benoit Rencurel known as "Our Lady in Laus." In the next chapters you'll learn about the tragic years of blood during the French revolts from 1793-1830. These were times when humanity believed itself better than God. Atrocities occurred unchecked. Then in Paris in 1830 at Rue de Bac the Virgin appeared. The next chapters in the book tell of the apparition to Panagia. This seer heard the Madonna tell of an ancient icon of the Virgin Mary that was found on the Greek island of Tinos known as  'Our Lady of Good Tidings.'

Record breaking heat-waves, limited rainfall, and a spike in tourism have many in Greece concerned about the availability of water. This is something we've heard experts talk about with regards to Athens. In Greece's Cycladic islands, however, which see millions of visitors every summer, this problem seems even more pronounced. Alexia Kalaitzi, an award-winning journalist and features reporter for Kathimerini, joins Thanos Davelis to look at what the mounting water crisis means for Greece and popular islands like Tinos. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Wells run dry as Tinos faces mounting water crisisBoosting Cyprus' defense is key given proximity to war-wracked Mideast, defense minister saysTrump picks ambassadors to Greece and TurkeyTom Barrack, Trump's pick for Turkey ambassador, is good news for Erdogan

“When I first decided to do these pilgrimages, I told myself I'm doing this as an investigative reporter. I'm doing it as an observer, and as an outsider … and in the end, that isn't what happened.”Rosemary Mahoney, author The Singular Pilgrim: Travels on Sacred Ground When Rosemary Mahoney got off the ferry at the tiny island of Tinos, in Greece, she witnessed something extraordinary. Pilgrims dressed in black exited the boat and immediately flung themselves to the ground, crawling on hands and knees to worship at a shrine at the top of a nearby hill. Watching these men and women rolling in the dirt, sweating beneath a scorching sun, she asked herself a simple question. Every human culture that has ever existed has had some concept of the divine, however you define that. She wanted to understand why.Her search for an answer began a remarkable journey to undertake six of the world's most prominent religious pilgrimages. Her journey would take her from the Way of St James, trekking hundreds of miles across the Pyrenees of southern France and Spain, to the burning ghats of Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganges River, in India, and beyond. This isn't a story about religion, or faith. It is an investigation into one of the most fundamental, but little understood, aspects of humanity. It is a quest to discover the roots of belief itself. And to find it, she will have to travel to six countries, walk hundreds of miles, and stare death in the face. Insightful, evocative, and inspiring. When you think of the Greek Islands, do you envision white sandy beaches with fresh fish and a cold bottle of wine? While this can describe some of the Greek Islands, the Cyclades are also extremely mountainous. This can make farming very difficult, which in turn, makes grape harvesting and winemaking difficult. Many small wineries are seeing younger generations leave the islands to move to the big city, which is causing many wineries to close their doors forever. One partnership decided to change this and they started a project on Tinos island to resurrect a dying winery. Working with lyrics and vocal music presents a special set of challenges and opportunities to burnish your music engraving skill set. In this first of a two-part episode, Philip Rothman and David MacDonald discuss many of the conventions and principles that govern lyric text. Staff position, alignment, and spacing must all be carefully considered when setting vocal text, and we sort through the best approaches for presenting the music clearly in relation to the lyrics. Beaming is an issue that has often confounded notesetters — specifically syllabic beaming, where the beams reflect the text instead of the rhythmic groups — and we talk about the change from traditional to modern notation and how best to handle melismatic passages. Fonts, always a favorite topic of conversation on Scoring Notes, are again worthy of exploration, and why certain fonts are better than others for lyrics. We offer our suggestions there, and also discuss the topics of hyphenation and word extensions that are necessary components of any instance where vocal text is present. There's much more we cover in this episode, and then in the next episode, we'll talk about where in the music notation software you can find the settings to control these various aspects and some tips to achieve good results. More on Scoring Notes: Dan Kreider on hymnal engraving Use the Tinos font as a metrically equivalent replacement for Times New Roman
