Jennie and Dianne conclude their series on fraternal organizations in this episode, where they explore a distinctively American fraternity formed with the purpose of assisting veterans of the Union army after the American Civil War. Known as the Grand Army of the Republic, or simply G.A.R., it served as a social and political platform for Union veterans and their families. The GAR passionately advocated for veterans' rights, including benefits such as pensions and healthcare. Additionally, it played a crucial role in establishing Memorial Day as a national holiday, commemorating the sacrifice of fallen soldiers. - "For I ‘listed in this army, Not exactly to my mind; But my country called for helpers, And I couldn't stay behind."  - Mary Woolsey HowlandTo learn more about the Association for Gravestone Studies, please visit their website: https://gravestonestudies.org/Resources used to research this episode include: Green, Jocelyn. The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was an aorganization created by the Union Veterans of the Civil War. The G.A.R. existed between 1866 to 1956, covering a 90 year existence. In Michigan there were 512 posts formed, and over 10,000 GAR posts create by the organization in the nation. There were even a few posts five posts in Canada, one in Mexico and another in Peru. The G.A.R. as an organization helped to set the foundation for future veterans organizations in the country, as well as lobby for benefits for wounded soldiers, widows and orphans of the Civil War. They were also instrumental in securing pensions for the colored troops in the years following the war. The organization membership was restricted to members of the Union Army, Navy, Marine Corps and the Revenue Cutter Service (forerunner to the Coast Guard) that were honorably discharged and served between April 12, 1866 and April 9, 1865. However, they were influencial in helping to establish many other affliated organizations that also became powerful groups, some that still exist today. The G.A.R. became a powerful influence in their years of existence, having elected five of their own members to the Presidency of the United States. For more information on the G.A.R. Kathleen opens the show drinking a Bloody Mary and providing her overview of the first week of 2021, stating that she thinks the events this week haven’t improved the outlook of the new year. Kathleen recommends liquor and snacks to get everyone through the insanity carrying over from 2020, including the 3-hour revolution on the US Capitol, and another missing airplane. Those familiar with Kathleen’s comedy know of her obsession with missing Malaysian Flight 370, as depicted in her bit “Wrong Ocean” from her Bothering Jesus album, and Kathleen carries that enthusiasm when researching the latest commercial aircraft to “disappear.” “BAD GOOD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food, Kathleen makes and describes to listeners Cheetos Bold n Cheesy Mac n Cheese, stating that she prefers Kraft Mac n Cheese. She moves on to try Kellogg’s Jumbo Snax, which comes in Fruit Loops (Kathleen’s absolute favorite,) Tiger Paws (made with Frosted Flakes,) Apple Jacks, and Corn Pops. DOLLY PARTON QUOTE: Instead of choosing a weekly Dolly quote, Kathleen switches to a recent tweet from Dolly’s sister, Stella Parton, involving the potential of a 2021 Civil War and “numbnuts.” DOLLY’S 75th BIRTHDAY REMINDER: Kathleen reminds listeners that Dolly’s 75th birthday is approaching, and she provides an address to send birthday cards to Dolly: PO Box 150307 Nashville, TN 37215-0307THE 3-HOUR AMERICAN REVOLUTION: Kathleen discusses the attempted “revolution” at the US Capitol building on January 6th, 2021 when Trump followers stormed the building trying to prevent the certification of the 2020 Presidential election in favor of Biden. Kathleen provides commentary on their motivation and the actual events of that day, including her perception of the rioters based on their “outfits” and their signage. She refers to those people dramatically scaling the front of the building instead of using the steps as “Honky Kong.” FAR-RIGHT SOCIAL MEDIA: In conjunction with the January 6th riots, Kathleen reviews the alt-conservative social media platform, Parler. She tells listeners the history of how Parler was formed, the financial backing that the Mercer family provided, and how the platform was used to align the mob that stormed the Capitol building, seemingly in support of President Donald J. Trump.WORLD CHESS HALL OF FAME: As a follow up to Episode 14 where Kathleen discusses the game of chess and the Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit,” she proudly announces to listeners that the World Chess Hall of Fame has been established in her home city of St. Louis, MO.LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM SELLS SONG CATALOG: It’s commonly known that Kathleen is a massive and life-long Fleetwood Mac fan, and she is amazed at a recent announcement that Lindsey Buckingham has sold his song catalog to a single publisher. Kathleen ponders the reasons why this action might have occurred and shares with listeners which Buckingham songs are her favorites. FLORIDA’S ONLINE COVID VACCINE SCHEDULING: Kathleen describes the current state of Floridians age 75+ attempting to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. She receives daily updates from her own parents, who are in Sarasota for the winter and have been directed to sign up for email lists, obtain QR Codes on their cell phones to put them on waiting lists, and most recently directed to event ticketing company Eventbrite to sign up for vaccine appointments. Kathleen goes on to detail the fake Eventbrite sites have been created as scams asking senior citizens to pay for a spot in line to guarantee the vaccine availability, and describes her father’s reaction to anyone asking him to provide a QR code prior to getting vaccinated. ANIMALS MOST LIKELY TO KILL YOU BY STATE: Kathleen continues with the segment Animals Most Likely to Kill You (By State), as reported by the Center for Disease Control. If you live in Georgia beware of snakes as snake bites have increased by approximately 40% in 2017. In Iowa and Kansas, keep your wits about you around domestic cattle ;-) THE LAST KNOWN CIVIL WAR WIDOW: Kathleen reads to listeners an article about the recent death of the last known Civil War widow. Helen Viola Jackson’s 1936 marriage to Union veteran James Bolin was extremely unusual: he was 93 and in declining health, and she was a 17-year-old schoolgirl. Kathleen goes on to read that the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and other heritage organizations have recognized Jackson’s place in history, which was never revealed until the final years before her death. ORLANDO FLYING CAR HUB: Kathleen laughs when reading an article announcing that the city of Orlando, FL, and a German aviation company has unveiled plans to build the first hub for flying cars in the United States. The 56,000-square-foot transportation hub, or vertiport, resembles an airport terminal and is designed to enable passengers to bypass Florida’s notoriously congested highways, the city and the hub’s developers contend. Kathleen is beyond amused that taxpayer money has been dedicated to this project for use by 2025 when flying cars haven’t yet been invented for use by the general public. WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen tells listeners to watch the final season of “Vikings” which was originally made for the History Channel but the entire series is now available on Amazon Prime.

Gouverneur K. Warren is remembered as the Savior of Little Round Top. He was highly regarded for his education and competence, but also accused of being too cautious by the generals who removed him from command. His record belies this, however. But Warren has suffered in the history book because of the long reach of his enemies. Here, the facts are reevaluated with some unpleasant revelations. Robert I. Girardi has had a lifelong fascination with the Civil War. He has studied all aspects of the war, and has tramped over many of the battlefields and related sites. He has collected artifacts and memorabilia and has read through thousands of documents, letters, and diaries written by participants, thereby developing an understanding of the important issues of the war and a sense of what the soldiers experienced. Robert Girardi earned his M.A. in Public History at Loyola University of Chicago in 1991. He is a past president of the Civil War Round Table of Chicago and a past vice president and newsletter editor of the Salt Creek Civil War Round Table. He belongs to two other Civil War round tables in the Chicago area. He is a fellow of the Company of Military Historians and is an associate member of the Sons of Union Veterans. He is on the editorial review board of the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society and was the guest editor of the 2011-2014 Civil War Sesquicentennial issues. He was the winner of the 2010 Chicago Civil War Round Table's prestigious Nevins-Freeman Award. In 2012 he was named to the board of directors of the Illinois State Historical Society, and sat on the board of directors of the Camp Douglas Restoration Society 2013-2018. In 2014 he was awarded the Milwaukee Civil War Round Table's Iron Brigade Association Award for Civil War scholarship. He was an extra in the movie, Andersonville.

Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career

Memorial Day endures as a holiday which most businesses observe because it marks the unofficial beginning of summer. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) advocated returning to the original date, although the significance of the date is tenuous. The VFW stated in 2002: In 2000, Congress passed the National Moment of Remembrance Act, asking people to stop and remember at 3:00 PM. On Memorial Day, the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The National Memorial Day Concert takes place on the west lawn of the United States Capitol. The concert is broadcast on PBS and NPR. Music is performed, and respect is paid to the men and women who gave their lives for their country. Across the United States, the central event is attending one of the thousands of parades held on Memorial Day in large and small cities. Most of these feature marching bands and an overall military theme with the Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard and Veteran service members participating along with military vehicles from various wars. During World War II, more airmen died in combat than Marines. Operation Tidal Wave was an air attack by bombers of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) based in Libya and Southern Italy on nine oil refineries around Ploiești, Romania on 1 August 1943, during World War II. It was a strategic bombing mission and part of the "oil campaign" to deny petroleum-based fuel to the Axis. The mission resulted in "no curtailment of overall product output." This mission was one of the costliest for the USAAF in the European Theater, with 53 aircraft and 660 air crewmen lost. It was proportionally the most costly major Allied air raid of the war and its date was later referred to as "Black Sunday". Five Medals of Honor and 56 Distinguished Service Crosses along with numerous others awards were awarded to Operation Tidal Wave crew members. Here is the story of John C. Waldron: June 4, 1942. The 15 Douglas TBD-1 Devastators of VT-8 launched from Hornet's flight deck in search of the enemy. Before takeoff, LCDR Waldron had a dispute with the Hornet's Commander, Air Group, Stanhope C. Ring, and Hornet CO Marc Mitscher about where the Japanese carriers would be found. Despite having a contact report showing the Japanese southwest of Hornet, Mitscher and Ring ordered the flight to take a course due west, in the hopes of spotting a possible trailing group of carriers. Waldron argued for a course based on the contact report, but was overruled. Once in the air, Waldron attempted to take control of the Hornet strike group by radio. Failing that, he soon split his squadron off and led his unit directly to the Japanese carrier group. Waldron, leading the first carrier planes to approach the Japanese carriers (somewhat after 9:00AM local time, over an hour before the American dive bombers would arrive), was grimly aware of the lack of fighter protection, but true to his plan of attack committed Torpedo 8 to battle. Without fighter escort, underpowered, with limited defensive armament, and forced by the unreliability of their own torpedoes to fly low and slow directly at their targets, the Hornet torpedo planes received the undivided attention of the enemy's combat air patrol of Mitsubishi Zero fighters. All 15 planes were shot down. Of the 30 men who set out that morning, only one—Ensign George H. Gay, Jr., USNR—survived. Their sacrifice, however, had not been in vain. Torpedo 8 had forced the Japanese carriers to maneuver radically, delaying the launching of the planned strike against the American carriers. After further separate attacks by the remaining two torpedo squadrons over the next hour, Japanese fighter cover and air defense coordination had become focused on low-altitude defense. This left the Japanese carriers exposed to the late-arriving SBD Dauntless dive bombers from Yorktown and Enterprise, which attacked from high altitude. The dive bombers fatally damaged three of the four Japanese carriers, changing the course of the battle.
