In this episode of OP Talks, Emanuel Padilla talks to T.I. Frazier about growing up with parents who were pastors, writing for children, and about his most recent book, Faith Arising (Timothy Frazier, 2022), which charts his journey of discovery and explores Christian teachings. The book invites readers “to critically examine key moments in your life where you felt lost, heartbroken, inspired, challenged, courageous, overwhelmed, and at peace.” His devotional Faith Growth Stages is forthcoming in 2023. Born on the East Coast and partly raised in Southern California, Frazier served ten years with the United States Army National Guard in various roles, including Chaplain Assistant. “As a Boricua, but also African-American, we're storytellers. And being able to share our story is a way of sharing our legacy. Why we do what we do,” says Frazier, who is the proud father of a three-year-old and also the author of the children's book Lauren the Cow (Timothy Frazier, 2022). “The stories, lessons learned,” he tells Padilla, “they're really stories about our faith, and the more we can share our journey— and being honest about it, even in the places that are difficult—it becomes an adventure that others can learn from.”

Legal Grounds | Conversations on Life, Leadership & Law

Let's be clear: I love my job.And as someone who's founded their own business, I'd like to think I can say this with a sort of earnestness that other may not fully possess. But every once in a while, I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't gotten into law school.See, the alternate course of action at the time was Ranger School for the United States Army. I was by no means guaranteed a spot, but it was a viable option & one I'm always a little curious about. What would my world philosophy have been? How would my leadership skills have developed?Well, while I'm long past the point of reenlistment, my hope is that I would have turned out something like today's guest.Daniel Harris spent 30 years in service to the United States Army National Guard. As first-generation immigrant, his story embodies what it means to step-up & give back, but it also taught me just how lucky we are to have people like him protecting this nation. He is the author of “On Guard: The Four Pillars of Leadership”, a book that weaves memoir & practical lessons into a gripping narrative. And since his retirement, he has continued to engage in the art of leading, founding Muddy Boots Leadership & teaching graduate courses on Organizational Leadership for Mercy College. While the audio on this episode isn't our best, I promise the conversation & stories are well worth turning up the volume a little. Enjoy the show!

What kind of training are we talking about? ARMY TRAINING, SIR! Niki talks to Nikki Burman, Barbell Logic’s Director of Client Experience, and Jerett Burman, Military Police Major in the United States Army National Guard, about the physical demands of the Army and the challenges of staying fit--at home and while deployed throughout the world.  Jobs in the Army--as with all services--put different physical demands on service members, but almost all Soldiers will have to pick things up and carry heavy loads, and, of course, all Soldiers must prepare for the realities of combat, including “putting things in certain places.”  Nikki & Jerett share the experience of seeing a cultural shift occur in fitness centers and gyms on Army posts. For a time, Jerett served in Kansas, and from the time he arrived to the time he left, both Jerett and Nikki saw more people training with barbells, as the realities of the new Army Combat Fitness Test, and the Army’s new fitness program, changed how Soldiers had to prepare for not only the test but also how they improved combat readiness. One common they see is Soldiers misunderstanding programming, so--without guidance--many Soldiers go SUPER HEAVY immediately, leaving little to no room for progress. Furthermore, the spirit of competition creates an urge to immediately beat the person next to them, when the more intelligent method would be to add weight over time.  Niki asks Nikki & Jerett how they would change Army PT, and they give their answer. They would incorporate the big compound lifts--the squat, deadlift, bench press, and press, along with some other supplemental and accessory lifts--and prioritize shorter sprints and intervals over longer, slower runs.  The other consideration, however, is the need to perform event after event. To some degree this is endurance, but it may be better be called stamina. The need to go from event to event and perform, and then, potentially, perform a watch or a desk job while sleep deprived. It’s not so much the same things as continuing to run during a marathon, but the ability to keep going despite the sleep deprivation, food deprivation, aches and pains, and other growing fatigue and exhaustion.  Often times, Soldiers can train better and more consistently when they are deployed, though that is not the case in more expeditionary situations--where Soldiers and units cannot return to bases with gyms.  “You’re either getting better or getting worse, there is no staying the same.” The views expressed do not necessarily represent the Department of Defense or the United States Government.  GET STARTED with one-on-one online coaching FOR FREE! The struggle to maintain the freedom of Democracy around the world is ongoing. American troops support nations around the world who are fighting for a free way of life. In Afghanistan a bloody and long war against many foes from inside and outside the country has left the nation fractured and chaotic. Two years ago this month, one of Americas Heroes paid the ultimate price to assist this struggling nation with its bid for freedom. Today we salute Major Brent Taylor of the United States Army National Guard. Major Taylor was killed in an "insider attack" In Kabul, Afghanistan, that was carried out by a rogue agent of the Afghan Security forces. Major Taylor was everything that an American Hero can be. He had served in the US Army as an officer for about 12 years, including 7 years of active duty, before joining the National Guard. But Major Taylor's service did not end when he was at home. Brent Taylor was also the Mayor of the small town of North Ogden, Utah which is about 45 minutes north of Salt Lake City. This deployment was meant to be one year away from home. Taylor temporarily stepped down from his position as mayor in order to serve his nation. As if service to this nation, and to the people of his home town, was not enough for one man, Major Brent Taylor, also Mayor Brent Taylor, was also a husband to wife Jennie, and a father to 7 children, aged 11 months to 13 years old. A wife without her husband, and 7 children without their father, and a nation with another hero returning home, is a casualty of the war of freedom against oppression. This sacrifice in the name of freedom is why we salute Major Brent Taylor of the United States Army National Guard.

If I get too angry, my body's not used to the chemical changes that go on when you get angry. I hurt for about a day. My head hurts, I'm on edge, and I feel pain. Thoughts on Breathing When you pay attention to your breathing, your body's going to force you to do it. You can't choke yourself out, right, or hold your breath into oblivion. Calmly use it to put your mind on something. You always have your breath and your heart beat, which is kinda related, and that's another automatic system you can put your mind on. Serving in the military is a choice that every American gets to make for themselves. Some people join alone, others join with friends, and some join to follow a tradition. Today's Troop Salute is for a soldier that joined to follow a family tradition of service. Today we are saluting Garrett Lee Brodersen of the United States Army National Guard. Garret is currently serving the nation while deployed in Afghanistan. He has been in the National Guard already for 8 years, and just signed up for another 6. The tradition of service in Brodersen's family runs deep like so many others. He followed his father James who served in the Army and participated in Desert Storm back in the 90's. And they both followed Garrett's grandfather into service, as he served with the US Navy before them. Garrett loves what he does for this great country, and he plans to follow through and retire with the full 20 years. That level of commitment to the cause is why we salute Garrett Lee Broderson of the US Army National Guard.

We have so many hard working and dedicated service men and women listening to this show, and to the station, and we are constantly communicating with many of you over our text lines, or on our social media pages. I received a message on my social media from today's troop.  She wanted to shout out all the hard working people on the front lines of this Covid current crisis that we are all going through, but when I read her story, I decided that she is someone who needs to be saluted as well. Today we salute Sergeant Alexis Marissa of the United States Army National Guard. Alexis is a full time law enforcement officer, and a Sergeant in the National Guard when her nation needs her. In her role as law enforcement, Alexis says it has been a tough couple of weeks.  The workload with this crisis, combined with recent losses of officers has put a strain on her entire "Blue Family". But Alexis says regardless of all of it, they are all out there 24/7 keeping us all safe as usual. Alexis also shouted out her "Green Family", “who are serving overseas and staying brave and on mission, despite the additional challenges of this crisis." Alexis' man is one of those currently deployed, and she's looking forward to his safe return in a couple of months. For keeping our streets safe at home, and our state and nation secure in the guard, today we salute Sergeant Alexis Marissa of the Army National Guard.

He also delivers daily wisdom and observations on Twitter @EdLatimore.   “If you just work and gradually improve and you're not afraid to take criticism and suffer, you're eventually going to get better.” Ed Latimore   Worst investment ever Blinded by heartbreak At 22 years of age, Ed found himself out of the longest relationship in his life. He was a mess, and without much thought, he found himself in the arms of another woman. Blinded by the emotional loss, he felt from the broken relationship, Ed jumped right into another relationship without getting to know the woman first. It didn’t matter to him that she was dating someone else when they met. It didn’t matter to him that her attitude seemed off. All he cared about was that he found her attractive. He just wanted to be with someone who wanted him. Her true colors start to show A few weeks into the relationship, Ed realized that his girlfriend was emotionally manipulative and did her best to isolate him from his friends. They would get into constant arguments but he kept going back to her because he found her attractive. Here comes the bombshell Not too long after they started dating, Ed’s girlfriend dropped the bomb on him; she was pregnant. Ed was distraught! Not only did he doubt the child was his because he came to learn that she had other partners, but also, he was not in a position to raise a child. He was just 22, broke, and living with his mum. Living in misery Ed being the good guy he is, didn’t abandon his girlfriend. She moved in with him at his mum’s house. Things, however, got worse. She was cheating on him, was always criticizing him and continued to manipulate him emotionally. Ed was so miserable and emotionally drained but he stayed and hoped things would get better but they only got worse. Having the guts to leave Ed wanted to leave the situation, but he felt trapped. His poor financial status made him feel useless and worthless. He didn’t have much to offer, financially, so he stayed so that he could continue living with his mom. It was a miserable situation. One day he woke up and realized that he was either going to lose his mind or do something that he’d live to regret for the rest of his life. After the worst fight with his girlfriend, he mastered the courage to leave the toxic relationship eventually. He vowed that with his next relationship, he would take his time to choose right and not let heartbreak lead him to another bad relationship. Lessons learned Vet the people you get into a relationship with Get your relationships right from the very beginning. You’ve got to make sure you pick people the right way. Ensure that you have a vetting process. Don’t date people just because the opportunity presents itself. Be observant You can learn quite a lot about a person by simply observing the little things once you know how to connect them and what they mean. Don’t be afraid to have high standards It's better to have high standards and lose a few potentially good people but block out all the bad ones than to lower your standards and have way too many bad ones. Be discerning Don’t ever be willing to stay in a situation any longer than you have to. Never get attached to something you can’t walk away from. Andrew’s takeaways Breakups are ugly for everybody Make a list of what you want in a partner and follow your list When the writing is on the wall, read it Actionable advice Get a monetizable skill set. You may go hard at the gym, look as good as you want, be the coolest guy in the block, but there's nothing quite as freeing as knowing that you have your own money and you’re independent. Nothing gives you more standards, as being able to bring something to the table. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months Ed’s goal for the next 12 months is to earn a quarter-million dollars this year. That would be a big stretch in his life. He sat down and figured out that what's important to him was writing and teaching. Who is God and what is He like? Paul Gray, author of Convertible Conversations and The Fish Net Experience, and co-author of Godly Men Make Godly Fathers discusses these questions and more.  As a musician starting out in the mid-60's, Paul and his band, the Gaslite Gang, made several national television performances and recorded five albums. Paul was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2013 as a member of the Junkyard Jazz Band. Paul owned a variety of businesses ranging from five retail music stores to a long-distance telephone company, as well as Paul Gray's Jazz Place, a popular Lawrence, Kansas, jazz venue where he performed with his group. Concurrently, he served in the United States Army National Guard and Army Reserves for 24 years as a bandmaster. In 1991, Paul and his wife founded New Life In Christ church and Lawrence, Kansas where to this day they continue to facilitate growing in grace through their members and community. In 1999 their church started a medical clinic for homeless individuals, The Heartland Medical Clinic, where Paul was CEO for 7 years. It continues to serve the medical needs of thousands of patients each year. Paul's message “Grace Is Unconditional Love In Action” focuses on helping people experience and enjoy God's love WITHOUT CONDITIONS for all people. He has found that knowing God personally leads to enjoying and experiencing life at a much higher level. In today's chat with Paul, he shares what led him to leave a successful entertainment career to pursue a life in ministry and his deeper discovery of God. He addresses some tough questions about who God is and what He is really like, from his own experience, candidly speaking out about the way many churches have incorrectly approached Christianity and what he believes is the true nature of God. We also discuss Paul's book Convertible Conversations and how God shows up in the midst of tragedy. A refreshing look at Christianity and the love that God has for all of us, Paul points out that Jesus hung out with the worst people in society at that time, and actually liked them. This being a demonstration of God's unconditional love for us, no matter what we've done or not done. He also explains how we can hear God, and call on Him whenever we need. Imagine what it would be like to talk with God and have Him guide you through life's ups and downs! Paul explains how that is possible in your life and mine. Key Takeaways 1) God is love (agape) – a supernatural love of another kind, unconditional. 2) Jesus hung out with the worst people in society. He liked them. 3) There is a misunderstanding that God is all about rules. He's not like that at all. He's about restoration and showing unconditional love. 4) When we hear from God (Truth) something inside of us vibrates – similar to the concept of sympathetic tuning in music. 5) God speaks to us through music, art, literature, other people, nature…it can be an impression, a thought, a word. 6) The church is shifting away from fear-tactics to unconditional love – the true nature of God. 7) God never leaves us - He is with us in the midst of tragedy.
