The applicative morpheme -ir adds a variety of arguments/adjuncts to the verbal stem, not only goals or benefactives, but also instruments, or locative adjuncts. The stative morpheme (-ik) occurs in middles and potentials. The passive morpheme -idw occurs not only with canonical (agent-theme) and low oblique applicative passives, but also with non-canonical passive applicative constructions (instrumental, locative, ...). Applicative and statives/passive can co-ocur in different orders V-stat-Appl, but V-Appl-Pass, or V Pass Appl the latter restricted to Instrumental and locative applicatives. Various interactions determine the cartography of Passive-(like) Voice(s) in Chichewa. Passive Voice(s) and Applicative interact with the argument structure ("little" vP) and the hierarchy of "obliques"/ PPs/applicatives (Schweikert (2005) [4]; morpheme orders reflect the syntactic derivation and give insight into the order of operations; stative and passives occur in different regions in Cinque's functional hierarchy (Cinque (1999) [5]) etc. Taken together, this leads to a general cartography of Passive Voice(s), and the conclusion that not only stative, but also passive voice(s) in Chichewa can be merged at different heights in the hierarchical structure. Because Passive can be merged above Locative, Locative can be passivized. Because Passive can be merged below APPL, passive voice can be merged below Instrumental and Locative, and only themes can be passivized in this order. This investigation provides important insights into some fundamental theoretical questions. What is the element that introduces the external argument a (light)verb: little v? ("yes") or (Kratzerian) Voice ("no"), and where is it located (above locative adjuncts or below) ("both are attested")? What are the formal properties of Passive Voice: is (Passive) Voice ever involved in argument structure (assigning or reducing argument structure?). Or is it simply a vehicle, devoid of any semantic properties, that serves to map arguments on their syntactic positions ? Mainframes, the early giants of the computing world, were massive and expensive, accessible only to large corporations and the government. These machines were housed in special rooms and were far from being personal or portable​​​​. Transition to Client-Server Models and Personalization: Computing started evolving with the development of client-server architecture. From the large, centralized mainframes, the industry moved to a model where computing was more distributed. Time-sharing systems allowed multiple users to access mainframe resources, leading to a gradual democratization of computing power. This shift laid the groundwork for the development of personal computers​​. The Era of Desktops and Handheld Devices: The next significant shift was the move to desktops and eventually to handheld devices. This evolution represented a dramatic change in how people interacted with computers, making them more personal and portable. The podcast mentions how devices like the Apple II brought computing into educational settings, revolutionizing how people could use these tools​​​​. The Impact of the Palm Pilot: The Palm Pilot is highlighted as a significant milestone in personal computing. Before the Palm, handheld devices were simply smaller versions of existing technology. The Palm Pilot, however, adopted a different approach. It did not try to replicate all functionalities of a PC. For instance, it did not support printing directly, positioning itself as a window or client to the PC, thus embracing a kind of client-server model. This decision not only made the device more practical and focused but also less expensive to support​​. Evolution of Form Factors: The podcast discusses the evolution of computing devices in terms of form factors. There were three main form factors: desktop (too big to carry), notebook (fit in a briefcase), and handheld (fit in a pocket or purse). Each form factor was defined by how users could physically carry and interact with these devices. But living with IBD doesn't mean you can't thrive and that's exactly what our guests, Dr. Laurie Keefer and Dr. Marla Dubinsky, co-founders of Trellus Health, are encouraging patients to recognize. Today we welcome Dr. Marla Dubinsky who is the Co-Founder for Trellus Health, the first resilience-driven connected health solution for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Dr. Dubinsky is the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital and is the Co-Director of the Susan and Leonard Feinstein Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinical Center at Mount Sinai. Her primary research focuses on the influence of genetics and immune responses on the variability in clinical presentations, treatment responses and prognosis of early-onset IBD. Dr. Dubinsky received her medical degree from Queen's University, Canda and completed her Pediatric Residency at Alberta Children's Hospital, Calgary, Canada, and her Clinical Fellowship in Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Sainte-Justine Hospital at the University of Montreal, Canada.
