Our monthly Open Conversation with military veterans focuses on Navy veterans in recognition of the the US Navy's 249th birthday celebrated on October 13. We'll have Navy veterans sharing stories, answering questions, and describing why their branch is the best.  We'll also hear from Beverly, Massachusetts, and Navy history expert Rich Pescatore on the real origins of the US Navy.  Vietnam Veteran Walt Brinker, USMA Class of 1966, tells us why his men in the 173rd Airborne and 1st Cav in 1966-1967 never used bandoliers for the M-60 ammunition. Ralph and Eric Grabowsky give us an update on their research on "Little John," the largest calibre gun in history. The origins of the United States Navy lie in the siege of Boston and the city's occupation by the British Army in 1775. After the Battle of Bunker Hill, when the Continentals sensed British vulnerability, newly commissioned General George Washington called for a ship that could patrol off shore to prevent the British from being resupplied by sea. Naval support could also obtain resources for the Continental forces. The Continental Congress wasn't so keen on a Navy. Ships were expensive and the British fleet's power was overwhelming.  Washington, then, acted on his own. On September 2, 1775, he ordered the schooner Hannah be commissioned as the first authorized patriot warship. The Hannah was a small vessel, crewed by civilians and captained by Nicholas Broughton, tasked with raiding British supply ships off the coast of Massachusetts. While not an official navy vessel, the Hannah set an important precedent by showing that naval warfare could complement the land-based efforts of the Continental Army. Following the success of the Hannah, Washington commissioned other vessels to harass British ships, but these early efforts were ad hoc, operating under the authority of the Continental Army rather than an organized navy.  On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress took decisive action, officially authorizing the creation of a Continental Navy. The Congress passed a resolution to outfit two ships, tasked with intercepting British supply vessels. This date is now celebrated as the official birthday of the United States Navy. Over the next several months, the Continental Congress expanded the fleet, commissioning additional ships and appointing officers to lead them.  Its early successes included raids on British ships and supply lines, which weakened the enemy's war effort and boosted American morale. Constantly underfunded and undersupplied, the Continental Navy nonetheless helped secure international alliances, especially with France, which joined the war on the side of the American colonies in 1778. With the Treaty of Paris signed in 1783, formally ending the American Revolution, the newly independent United States dismantled the Navy, and its ships were sold off. Without a navy, the U.S. government had little means of protecting its commercial interests abroad, and the constant harassment of American ships by pirates and European powers underscored the need for a naval revival. Congress passed the Naval Act of 1794, which authorized the construction of six frigates, marking the formal revival of the U.S. Navy. These ships, which would become known as the "Original Six Frigates", included the USS Constitution, USS United States, USS President, USS Congress, USS Chesapeake, and USS Constellation. Featuring Boss Gil Rud, Blue Angels Flight Leader (1986 - 1988) | Produced & hosted by Ryan Nothhaft, Blue Angel PhantomsIn this Interview, Boss Rud discusses his brand new memoir “From the Prairie to the Pacific: A Blue Angel's Journey” that details his life from growing up in a small remote farming town in North Dakota to becoming the Commanding Officer of the Blue Angels and later the Captain of an aircraft carrier.  With ten deployments under his belt, Boss Rud attributes many of the lessons learned from his informative years on his family's farm to later serving him well in his naval career.   A graduate of North Dakota State University in 1966, Boss Rud attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) at NAS Pensacola the following year. Completing his flight training at NAS Chase Field in Beeville, TX, Rud was assigned to fly the A4 Skyhawk and deployed to the Mediterranean aboard the USS Forrestal. Upon his return, Rud switched to the LTV A-7 Corsair and combat deployed to Vietnam aboard the USS Oriskany in 1971. He'd also fly air support in the subsequent evacuation of Saigon known as Operation Frequent Wind in April of 1975.Upon the conclusion of combat in Vietnam, Rud held a variety of roles including RAG Instructor, Landing Signal Officer (LSO) and Commanding Officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 192 (VFA-192) also known as the “World Famous Golden Dragons”. It was during his time as the Head of Junior Officer Detailing in Arlington, Virginia in 1985 when Rud was encouraged by Jim Maslowski and Randy Clark, two former Blue Angels, to submit an application to become the Blue Angels' Commanding Officer for the 1986 season. Despite 11 other applicants, Boss Rud was selected for the role and took command of the team for their final season in the A4 Skyhawk.  Boss Rud recalls several significant memories from his first season with the Blue Angels, including flying an airshow in Fargo, North Dakota in front of his family and friends. Unbeknownst to Boss Rud, also in the audience that weekend was a nine year old boy, Brian Kesselring, attending his first Blue Angels air show and would later go on to also serve as the Commanding Officer of the Team. 1986 also marked the release of the feature film “Top Gun” produced by Paramount Pictures, and the music video “Dreams” by Van Halen. Each played a significant role in driving massive audiences to air shows in the years that followed. Boss Rud also discusses the incredible work done by Navy test pilots during the transition to the F/A-18 for the 1987 season and the tragic loss of Keith Crawford, the test pilot responsible for developing some of the team's key flight control modifications. With the new Hornets came new challenges. Boss Rud details how modifications had to be made with air traffic control in Pensacola so that the team could efficiently get their six jets to altitude for transit to air show sites. He also recalls the Blue Angels' flyover of Super Bowl XXII in 1988 and his emotions after landing for his final airshow. Additional roles Boss Rud held prior to his retirement include CO of the USS Wabash, Deputy Commander & Chief of Staff of Task Force Five, and CO of the USS Constellation.Support the show

But what would happen if, instead of maintaining power at the top, leaders gave power away to others? How could sharing power change the way we work, the way we relate to others, and the way we approach problem-solving? And what would schools look like if everyone was part of a constellation of contributors?Guest: Matthew BarzunResources and Expanded Show NotesFull TranscriptIn This Episode:“The problem with power sharing is it, because so much of us are in this pyramid mindset, it's sort of like, well, if I have 10 units and we share it, I guess I'll have five and you have five now. But what all these amazing leaders who inspired me realized was no, no, no, power isn't a finite thing, like something you mine in Western or Eastern Kentucky, like coal. It is something, it is infinite, and you make it. And you make it with other people sitting around a table, virtual or real. And it all begins with giving away power.” (14:28)“Diversity and division. They have the same root, ‘div'. So what they love most and fear most has something to do with separateness. And so that, you know, now we see where it ends with the constellation. I was like, so they want to stand out as an individual like me, but they don't want to stand out so much that they're lonely. Right? So they want to stand out and fit in. And then I was like, boy, do we have a good image for that in the form of a constellation. Stand out, be special and form something special to you. Easy to say, hard to do.” (30:57)“We want freedom together. And not some mushy compromise, right? Half freedom, half together. Freedom with and through one another…the hard part was how could we figure out how to be free together? Thirteen separate colonies. And we did a constitution and we, you know what I mean, all that kind of stuff. And we had a motto for it: From Many One. And we had an image that was supposed to go—remember, he named that ship the USS Constellation. We had an image that's supposed to go with that motto.” (43:37)“It cannot be isolated to the teacher or to the student or to the comedian or to the thing. It's this mutuality, it's this interdependence. It's the invisible. When someone shows you Orion's Belt, right? The lines aren't there, you have to imagine them. And then once you've seen them, you can't unsee them. And so that, I think, is what's going on here, that if we can find those connections, pass them onto the next generation, they will be alive and not be able to unsee them and be able to build useful, much more powerful things together than we could on our own.” (47:25) Hosted on Acast. The Enterprise responds to a distress call from one of its sister starships, the USS Constellation, only to find it destroyed by a massive killing machine that emanated from another galaxy. It's purpose: to destroy planets, consume the leftover debris to refuel itself and then move on to the next star system to repeat the process. Guilt-ridden over the loss of his crew and hell-bent on revenge, the Constellation's lone survivor, Commodore Matt Decker, takes command of the Enterprise, orders an irrational attack on "that thing" and puts the entire crew in harm's way in an effort to destroy it once and for all. It's "Star Trek" meets "Moby Dick" in "The Doomsday Machine," an all-time classic and fan favorite that features high drama, gripping action, a brilliant screenplay (written by Norman Spinrad), briskly-paced direction (by Marc Daniels), an epic score (composed by Sol Kaplan) and -- perhaps most of all -- one of the greatest performances by a guest star on "Star Trek" (William Windom as Commodore Matt Decker). The Doomsday Machine was the sixth episode of Star Trek's second season to air, with a traumatised starship commander intent on revenge against the machine that killed his crew. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss the design aesthetics of planet killers. When the Enterprise encounters a distress signal from the USS Constellation, Kirk and the crew are concerned to find the ship apparently disabled and abandoned in a decimated star system. Once on board they discover the sole survivor is the commanding officer, Commodore Decker (William Windom). When Kirk becomes trapped on the wreck of the Constellation, Decker takes command of the Enterprise and leads it into conflict with the titular Doomsday Machine. Elsewhere, Lt Palmer (Elizabeth Rogers) does her best impression of Lt. Uhura. The Doomsday Machine was directed by Marc Daniels, the ninth of his fourteen Star Trek episodes. The writer was Norman Spinrad, his only story for the show. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered what Uhura was so busy with all episode long. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. The Doomsday Machine was released in 1967. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

What do you think is scarier, to be launched off a carrier deck and hit 1200 MPH or to launch a successful healthcare technology company? Well you can find out because my guest on this episode is Richard Gengler, MBA, who has done both—first as a Navy F/A -18 pilot and next as the founding CEO of Prevail Health. Rich grew up in Madison Wisconsin and graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management, with a degree in Accounting. After that he joined the US Navy flight program and was designated a Naval Aviator and selected to fly the F/A 18 Hornet where he served for 9-and-a-half years. During that time Rich participated extensively in various assignments in support of the Global War on Terror. He was Operational Test Director at Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Nine (VX-9), and was responsible for the testing and evaluation of weapons. He served two tours aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, he flew numerous combat missions as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and earned an Air Medal for his distinguished service. Rich is also a graduate of the Booth Graduate School of Business at The University of Chicago. He’s worked as an Associate at Dunrath Capital, Inc., in private equity and venture capital, and currently he is the Founder and CEO of Prevail Health, a healthcare technology company that addresses specifically mental health issues in veterans/military and the health promotion needs of the US Department of Defense and US Department of Veterans Affairs. Rich has committed his life in radically different fashions to be of service to others. I think you will not only be inspired with how he lives hi life in full, but also to learn some great pieces of advice as to entrepreneurship in healthcare technology as well as funding and bootstrapping a successful business.

There is a retired fleet of ships now docked at the Baltimore Maritime Museum, each with its own history of battle and death and now with a legacy of hauntings. The USS Torsk is a Tench Class submarine emblazoned with the fierce grin of a shark that became the Galloping Ghost of the Japanese during World War II. The USCGC Taney is a Coast Guard Cutter that is the last ship floating that fought at Pearl Harbor and it participated in the search for Amelia Earhart. The USS Constellation has the distinction of being the first ship built for the Unites States Navy and it also has the distinction of being one of the most haunted locations in Maryland. That is probably because it not only fought in several wars, but it was involved in battling against pirates and the slave trade in Africa. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of these haunted ships of Baltimore! The Moment in Oddity features Organized Crime's Bee Heist of 2017 and This Month in History features the deadliest school mass murder in America. I had to dig deep into my CDs collection for this mix. 1997 was a dope year. I was living the life in San Diego serving on the USS Constellation. San Diego had a sweet music scene along with a great local rock station (91X, still there and dope as ever). This mix consists of bands that I was banging hard in my Discman that year. Some of them I found on my own and some were pushed on me by enthusiastic fans at the time. Quicksand came to my attention due to the skinny, gap punk, a-hole who used to date my sister and with whom I was stuck on a cross country road trip that year. Veruca Salt were my pretend girlfriends at the time, and some nice young lady who I met in Australia later mailed a mixtape to me with much of the first Powderfinger CD on it, for instance. All of these bands were slept on in their day. P.S. In 1997, I was obsessed with Ænima but feel that Tool is too mainstream for this mix so they're represented by the ridiculous opening track. Enjoy and be careful as you rock out with your thing out:) Tool - Ænima Intermission Quicksand - Fazer Powderfinger - Give Veruca Salt - Awesome Failure - Heliotropic Rocket From The Crypt - Heater Hands Veruca Salt - With David Bowie Quicksand - Thorn In My Side Powderfinger - Turtle's Head Rocket From The Crypt - On A Rope Many More . . . I went by DJ alt.rock for 10 years as a tongue-in-cheek diss at lazy rock & roll radio program directors "discovering" '90s alternative rock in the late aughts. DJ alt.rock was also a nod to early rap names that usually contained either "rock" or "ski"... Never in a million years did I imagine that the prefix "alt-" would be so drastically ruined by a former reality TV clown, but that's exactly what happened in 2016/17... I've done my best to clear that name from as many mixes and artwork as possible, but some sets have so many alt.rock DJ-drops in them that I've opted to just post this notice and keep it moving. From now on, I'm using my first name, because nobody can mess it up (other than myself).

"The Lion and the Three Cows" is a fable from Afghanistan – the first Afghani story we've ever presented – about discord and mistrust, standing together versus falling alone. We come to you from Virginia, where we're doing a return engagement at 4 libraries before moving on to North Carolina and New Jersey. We've just finished our Midwest stint, after which we zipped across country to Baltimore to attend the annual convention of the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) in order to talk to principals about our assembly programs and residencies. The convention was held right downtown, next to the waterfront berthing the historic ship USS Constellation, next to Camden Yards where the Orioles were swatting at baseballs, and near the birthplace of Babe Ruth.  Happy Listening,Dennis (Narrator, White Cow, Lion) and Kimberly (Narrator, Black Cow, Brown Cow) Upcoming Shows: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, Massachusetts
