Dr. Patel brought his background ininternational community building to the meals and gatherings at Coffee Barreland now into Uncommon Market and the Uncommon Junior Chefs program. Formultiple decades, Dr. Patel served all around the world in areas in desperateneed of basic resources, and his job was to coordinate international groupslike NGOs with local community members so that the locals could learn how tobuild or create the resources they needed. His passion for community buildingmanifested in Coffee Barrel after he and his family moved to the Beeville areaa handful of years ago. Sensing a need for students and families to have accessto higher quality food sources and preparation skills, he started a communitygarden and began hosting dinners at Coffee Barrel. Featuring Boss Gil Rud, Blue Angels Flight Leader (1986 - 1988) | Produced & hosted by Ryan Nothhaft, Blue Angel PhantomsIn this Interview, Boss Rud discusses his brand new memoir “From the Prairie to the Pacific: A Blue Angel's Journey” that details his life from growing up in a small remote farming town in North Dakota to becoming the Commanding Officer of the Blue Angels and later the Captain of an aircraft carrier. With ten deployments under his belt, Boss Rud attributes many of the lessons learned from his informative years on his family's farm to later serving him well in his naval career. A graduate of North Dakota State University in 1966, Boss Rud attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) at NAS Pensacola the following year. Completing his flight training at NAS Chase Field in Beeville, TX, Rud was assigned to fly the A4 Skyhawk and deployed to the Mediterranean aboard the USS Forrestal. Upon his return, Rud switched to the LTV A-7 Corsair and combat deployed to Vietnam aboard the USS Oriskany in 1971. He'd also fly air support in the subsequent evacuation of Saigon known as Operation Frequent Wind in April of 1975.Upon the conclusion of combat in Vietnam, Rud held a variety of roles including RAG Instructor, Landing Signal Officer (LSO) and Commanding Officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 192 (VFA-192) also known as the “World Famous Golden Dragons”. It was during his time as the Head of Junior Officer Detailing in Arlington, Virginia in 1985 when Rud was encouraged by Jim Maslowski and Randy Clark, two former Blue Angels, to submit an application to become the Blue Angels' Commanding Officer for the 1986 season. Despite 11 other applicants, Boss Rud was selected for the role and took command of the team for their final season in the A4 Skyhawk. Boss Rud recalls several significant memories from his first season with the Blue Angels, including flying an airshow in Fargo, North Dakota in front of his family and friends. Unbeknownst to Boss Rud, also in the audience that weekend was a nine year old boy, Brian Kesselring, attending his first Blue Angels air show and would later go on to also serve as the Commanding Officer of the Team. 1986 also marked the release of the feature film “Top Gun” produced by Paramount Pictures, and the music video “Dreams” by Van Halen. Each played a significant role in driving massive audiences to air shows in the years that followed. Boss Rud also discusses the incredible work done by Navy test pilots during the transition to the F/A-18 for the 1987 season and the tragic loss of Keith Crawford, the test pilot responsible for developing some of the team's key flight control modifications. With the new Hornets came new challenges. Boss Rud details how modifications had to be made with air traffic control in Pensacola so that the team could efficiently get their six jets to altitude for transit to air show sites. He also recalls the Blue Angels' flyover of Super Bowl XXII in 1988 and his emotions after landing for his final airshow. Additional roles Boss Rud held prior to his retirement include CO of the USS Wabash, Deputy Commander & Chief of Staff of Task Force Five, and CO of the USS Constellation.Support the show
In what was once thought to be an impossibility, the Blue Angels made history in 1992 by becoming the first United States flight team to fly over the skies of Moscow, Russia. The momentous visit served as a way to ease tensions between the once Cold War rivals. The Team's trip to the former Soviet Union was highlighted by two air shows and a ride exchange between the Blue Angels and pilots from the Russian Knights Aerobatic Flight Team. The significance of these events were not lost on the Blue Angels' Lead Solo Pilot, John “Gucci” Foley, who joins this episode of Blue Angel Phantoms to share insights and behind the scenes stories from that now famous ‘92 European tour, as well as his naval career that spanned 17 years and saw him ascend to the rank of Commander. In this brand new interview, Gucci candidly dives into his navy experience and opens the discussion with his upbringing as a German born army brat and the influence his father had on him to pursue a military career. It was during this same time period that Foley attended a Blue Angels air show and proclaimed to his father that one day he too would be a military aviator. True to his word, Foley applied to the military academies but was initially rejected for having too much protein in his urine. Not one to quit, he attended University of Colorado for his freshman year of college before successfully transferring to the United States Naval Academy where he graduated in 1982. With a desire to fly with an F/A-18 Hornet squadron, Foley was selected for jet training at NAS Chase Field in Beeville, Texas. However, after receiving his Wings of Gold in 1984, and in alignment with the needs of the Navy, Foley would initially be assigned to Attack Squadron 22 (VA-22) flying the A-7 Corsair II. Disappointed with the assignment at the time, Foley now reflects that the three years he spent flying the A-7 were critical in his development as a Navy pilot. Aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) Foley and VA-22 deployed to the Western Pacific, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean in 1986 and later to the Persian Gulf in 1988. It was during these deployments that Foley received the Top Nugget Award for first-tour pilots in Carrier Air Wing Eleven, and was also recognized as one of the “Top 10” of all air wing pilots. Upon returning from the Persian Gulf, Foley transferred to Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 (VMFAT-101) based in El Toro, California, where he served as an F/A-18 Hornet flight instructor pilot and landing signal officer. It was during his tour with VMFAT-101 that Foley submitted an application and pursued a position with the Blue Angels that was almost derailed when he accidentally deployed live ordinance from his aircraft on a training exercise. Grounded by his commanding officer and his letter of recommendation revoked, Foley openly shared his lessons learned from the mishap during his interview with the Blue Angels and was selected as the Team's narrator for the 1990 air show season. Foley would enjoy a three year tenure with the Blue Angels that would see him progress from the team's narrator to a position in the demonstration as a solo pilot. Having developed a strong bond with his opposing solo, Ken Switzer, for the 1992 season, the two explored implementing new maneuvers including the Section High Alpha Pass and the Solo Section Take-Off. Both maneuvers are now featured in the demonstration that Blue Angels perform today. During 1992 season, the Blue Angels traveled to Europe for the first time since 1973 to perform 16 air shows in 8 different countries including Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, England, Spain, Italy, Finland and Sweden. As if it happened yesterday, Foley fondly reflects on a flight he gave to his Russian counterpart that rendered his new comrade unconscious during a Support the show

The La Vernia High School Bears soccer team took a hard loss March 24 at the hands of Beeville during the first round of the UIL soccer playoffs. Two costly mistakes that led to goals was all that Beeville needed. Though the Bears seemed to control the game in both possession and shots on goal, it was not enough to win. The Trojans went into the half leading 2-0, but the Bears cut the lead 10 minutes into the second half. With the Bears increasing their attack to try to tie it up, “Lady Luck” was not on their side....Article Link

Join us as we take a journey through Celebrity Chef Adrian Perez's rise to the top! Adrian Perez was born in the small quaint town of Beeville, Tx. He spent his childhood, knee hi, watching his father, Ruben Perez, run a Tex-Mex restaurant, and mother Leticia Perez, run a women's gift shop and boutique. His father finally decided to end his 30 year long run in the restaurant industry selling the business. Never having a job outside the family businesses, he started his first outside work experience at the HEB Grocery Store Chain. Adrian attended Culinary School at Del Mar College. He soon was promoted to Manager. A call from corporate HEB and the local Corpus Christi Channel 3 news station opened the first door into an extended career in media. Live cooking demos on the 30 year long running show, Domingo Live, was his first TV appearance as a chef. Soon after, local hip hop station offered him a position as an Emcee Hosting shows at a nightclub, cutting commercials for the radio, and broadcasting live from club events. He then made the move, with HEB, to Houston, TX. In Adrian's first week in Houston, he became the official HEB TV Correspondent for Houston's live audience show, Great Day Houston with Debra Duncan on KHOU Channel 11. Other TV cooking spots came about for Channel 2 News “Cooking Time with HEB”, Good Taste TV with Emmy Award winning Tanji Patton, and News Channel CW 39. Adrian also had the pleasure of working on television with Skinny Girl Mogul Bethany Frankel and Celebrity Fit Club and weight loss expert Dr. Ian Smith. Continuing his steady career with television, a full-time position at HEB, and Complete Eats growing as a business, Adrian decided to take the plunge, and leave HEB after 11 years of service. Adrian made it to national television as a competitor on The Food Network, but soon found himself living out of his jeep and sleeping in his rented commercial kitchen common area just to make ends meet. It was during the darkest and most difficult time of his life that his determination and passion for excellent customer service earned Adrian a referral and opportunity to serve as private chef to the late President Bush Sr. and Mrs. Barbara Bush. President Bush & Mrs. Bush had not only granted him an opportunity for work, but served as a reminder of how far he had come. Over the next 2 years Adrian's presence on local news channels expanded from Houston to multiple others in San Antonio, Beaumont, El Paso, Laredo, Austin, Dallas & Corpus Christi providing culinary infotainment all over Texas & more. As a creative, Chef Adrian recently added “actor” to the list of outlets as he walked into his first and only audition, and booked his first role in a movie. Aside from a life of daily work and following numerous passions, Adrian dedicates all philanthropic time and efforts to raising up women. Starting with his mother, a breast cancer survivor and business owner herself, to his entrepreneurial great great great grandmother, he credits the female influences in his life to be the unsung heroes and true mentors that have taught him the important keys to happiness, emotional intelligence and success. This week, we're featuring two main portions of the show. You'll hear updates from Greek comrades at 1431 AM free social radio in Thessaloniki and Radiozones Of Subversive Expression, 93.8 FM pirate radio in Athens. Both of these were featured on the latest episode of Bad News: Angry Voices from Around The World, available the middle of each month at A-Radio-Network.org. Prior to that, you'll hear anarchist prisoner Xinachtli talk about his life and his case. This segment was first aired on TFSR in 2013 and then again in 2015. We thought it was time to share some of the story of Chicanx, anarchist-communist political prisoner Xinachtli, in his own words. Throughout the segments original audio, I used his state name of Alvaro Luna-Hernandez as he had not yet adopted the moniker Xinachtli, which means “seed” in Nahuatl. Xinachtli is a collective member at and editor of the Certain Days political prisoner calendar. Xinachtli is serving a 50 year sentence since 1996 in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for aggravated assault on a Sheriff in Alpine, Texas. The Sheriff was serving a warrant for Xinachtli's re-arreast at Xinachtli's home. When questioned on the nature of the warrant, the Sheriff pulled a gun and Xinachtli was able to disarm him and make an escape without harming the Sheriff significantly. After a few days of man-hunt, his mothers house was surrounded by numerous local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and the house was beseiged. It was only a 9-1-1 call from Xinacthli made stating that he was not being allowed to surrender that caused the troops to stand down and he allowed himself to be taken into state custody. The grounds for the arrest warrant have since been overturned, but based on the post-facto word of the Sheriff that Xinachtli had pointed the gun at him, Xinachtli was sentenced to 50 years. He's been determined to be a political prisoner based on his participation in multiple cases against abuse by prison officials and police, his jailhouse lawyering, advocacy for Latinx and other marginalized people in Texas and his political stance that the US and state governments occupying the Southwest of Turtle Island is a racist and illegitimate regime. Here is featured an interview with Xinachtli that we received from comrades in the Anarchist Black Cross who were doing support work for him. The original interview was incomplete, missing the voice of the interviewer, so we did our best to edit and reconstruct the audio to better fit a conversational format and present his conflicts with the Prison Industrial Complex, his views on his political prisoner status at the time of this interview and his views on his case. More info on his case, plus his writings and ways to get involved in his support campaign can be found at FreeAlvaro.Net. You can write to Xinachtli by addressing your envelope to: Alvaro Luna Hernandez #255735 W.G. McConnell Unit, 3001 Emily Drive, Beeville, Texas 78102 Be sure to use Xinachtli only in written content meant for him, prison staff likely won't deliver envelopes with Xinachtli written on them. . ... . .. You can learn about how to write him or see his book wish list up at SupportMariusMason.org Phone Zap for Hunger Striking Prisoners at Central Prison, NC From Atlanta IWOC: Description: Sixteen folks incarcerated at Central Prison in Raleigh, NC are going on a hunger strike starting Monday January 20, 2020 as an act of comradery to the 200 prisoners being tortured in Unit One (a mental health unit). They need your help to make the calls on Monday, January 20th. And if you have the time thereafter, call any other day you can until their demands are met and those sixteen hunger strikers can eat again. Background: In Unit One at Central Prison, guards are daily using chemical mace against both (level 2) mental health prisoners who receive psychiatric help and (level 3) mental health prisoners who take psychotropic medications. Guards are trigger happy and deploy an excessive amount into the prisoner's small cell at the slightest disagreement. Pursuant to Chapter F Section 1504 Procedure (d): “An officer is prohibited from using force solely as a result of verbal provocation. An officer shall not use force against an offender who has abandoned his/her resistance or who is effectively restrained. The use of force as punishment is strictly prohibited.” Furthermore, these prisoners attend a group therapy session every Monday but while these prisoners are in group, Unit One's guards destroy the cells of these prisoners by searching their cells and throwing their personal belonging all around the cell. This is done to deter the prisoners from attending group, discouraging them from receiving treatment. Medical staff continue to show deliberate indifference to the needs of the prisoners housed on Unit One. Several prisoners are not receiving their self-meds (medications given out monthly that prisoners keep in their cells, these meds are but are not limited to blood pressure meds and high cholesterol meds, etc.). To receive these meds, the prisoner submits a medication refill request. The medical staff has neglected to submit the requests therefore leaving several prisoners without their meds. It takes months to be even seen by medical staff when a sick call is submitted. Prisoners are not receiving adequate healthcare. Prisoners are compelled to endure illnesses for months before being seen by medical staff. This medical neglect and excessive use of force towards the most vulnerable population in Central Prison is cruel and unusual torture and a human rights violation. These sixteen brave and selfless activists imprisoned in Central Prison are taking a stand for those in Unit One who are mentally incapable of making these demands, by way of a hunger strike. This is a humanitarian display of unity for those inside who face injustice by the very same who face injustices enslaved right there with them. This solidarity is inspiring. Please help them to expose these human rights violations and meet their basic, humanitarian demands by joining the phone zap and calling in to amplify their voices! Suggested script and demands: I am aware that Central Prison's guards and medical staff are directly torturing the prisoners and there are 16 hunger strikers exposing these human rights violations that will not eat until the following issues are addressed: The excessive use of chemical mace on prisoners who have not been a threat to staff or others. Stop the targeted searches of mental health prisoners who attend weekly group on Unit One. We know that this is an attempt to discourage from attending group to receive treatment. Address the deliberate indifference shown by medical staff not refilling prisoners' self-meds and neglecting to answer sick calls within a timely manner Who to call: (919) 733-0800 Central Prison, Request to speak with Deputy Warden Steven Waddel, Unit One Manager Tenbrook, and/or medical personnel.
