Political commentator Mike Indian says that the Winter Fuel U-turn has undermined the position of the Prime Minister and Chancellor, with Labour MPs getting increasingly rebellious. But there is no obvious successor to Keir Starmer and Mike predicts that the PM will not only last till the end of this Parliament but stand again. In some ways, he feels, the forthcoming Spending Review is the biggest decision Labour will take in this Parliament. He approves of the money earmarked for improving transport in the north and the equipment detailed in the Defence Review. But it's clear personnel levels in the armed forces need to be raised. All this at a time when jittery markets no longer want to sustain growing government debt while growth is low. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

But after losing it all, he found himself in a place of regret and desperation. That's where his journey back home began—and where he discovered something beautiful: the Father had never stopped watching, waiting, and loving.Discontentment can lead to destruction, but a single U-turn can change everything. Did someone say U-turn? Ed Balls and George Osborne have been saying it for a while, actually, when it comes to the matter of the controversial winter fuel tax cut. Now that the government has walked it back, will it do the trick and soothe voters and ease tensions with Labour MPs? Ed thinks the approach is “politically and technically messy”. George, for his part, thinks it's nothing short of a damaging “fiasco” for Labour. Meanwhile, David Lammy announced this week the suspension of trade talks with Israel, in light of the escalating violence in Gaza. Does this signal a shift in the UK-Israel relations? And will it make much difference to the crisis if it does? George isn't so sure… Plus, the pair discuss the newly-minted, post-Brexit deal with the EU - did Britain make the right calls and the right concessions? After sustained speculation and a local elections drubbing, Keir Starmer announced today at PMQs that the government will be softening their policy on winter fuel. Whilst it won't come into effect for some time, they have agreed to ensure that ‘more pensioners are eligible for winter fuel payment.'  This comes hours after a memo was mysteriously leaked to the Telegraph. It contains an extensive list of recommendations from Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner to the Treasury, including a set of eight tax rises such as reinstating the pensions lifetime allowance and altering dividend taxes. This amounts to a direct challenge to Rachel Reeves's fiscal approach and preference for spending cuts. The bigger story, of course, is what this says about feelings within Labour – it's clearly not a happy family. Sources suggest that Angela Rayner is uneasy with the direction of travel in the Treasury and speaks for a silent majority in the Labour party who are fed up with defending controversial measures such as winter fuel. So who leaked this memo? Could Rayner be leading a mutiny? And will the U-turn on winter fuel placate the rebels?  Oscar Edmondson speaks to James Heale and Isabel Hardman. In a stunning turn of events, the US and China announced a dramatic reduction in tariffs, which President Trump portrayed as a “total reset” with China. "Starmer Winter Fuel U-Turn: Too Little, Too Late" #Starmer U-turn, #Winter Fuel Allowance, #Reform UK, #Nigel Farage Rumours are swirling after Labour's bruising losses to Reform UK in last week's council elections. Is the government now preparing to U-turn on one of its most controversial policies — the massive cut to Winter Fuel Allowance for millions of pensioners? Health Minister Wes Streeting admitted today that voters “aren't happy,” revealing it was a major issue on the doorstep during the campaign. But Jon Gaunt asks: Is it too little, too late? More importantly, is Labour starting to look like "Reform Lite" — dancing to Farage's tune out of panic? Just ten months into office and Starmer's team is already in retreat. That's not a reset — that's a crisis. With Keir Starmer now the most unpopular Prime Minister on record, is this government already on the ropes? Could Rachel Reeves, Yvette Cooper — or even Starmer himself — be forced out? And is Nigel Farage a dead cert to be Britain's next PM?
