It has been a week of red faces for party leaders. On Thursday, Keir Starmer apologised and took personal responsibility for the appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK ambassador to the US – after a first round of document disclosures suggested the prime minister was largely absent from the decision-making process. Meanwhile, Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch were both busy executing awkward U-turns on their earlier vocal support for a US war on Iran that is proving distinctly unpopular with UK voters. Host Lucy Fisher is joined by the FT's deputy political editor Jim Pickard, columnist and writer of the ‘Inside Politics' newsletter Stephen Bush, and political editor George Parker to debate the twists and turns of the week in Westminster.Clip from: The MirrorFollow Lucy on X: @LOS_Fisher, and Bluesky: @lucyfisher.ft.com; Jim: @PickardJE and @pickardje.bsky.social; Stephen: @stephenkb and @stephenkb.bsky.social; and George: @GeorgeWParker and @georgewparker.bsky.socialWant more? Starmer and Shabana Mahmood now want to offer illegal migrants up to £40,000 to go home. Instead of throwing taxpayers' money at the problem, why not secure our borders and adopt the only policy that works: DETER, DETAIN AND DEPORT. With more than 15 policy U-turns, Starmer seems to have the Midas touch in reverse — everything he touches turns to shit. Trump's criticism comes after Starmer reportedly refused to allow UK bases to be used in action against Iran, a decision many believe he was pushed into by figures such as Ed Miliband. Starmer held a press conference today trying to reassure the country that everything is under control. Watching it, I came away thinking something very different: the asylum system is broken and the lunatics are running the asylum in Westminster. Tonight we break it all down. Is Trump right about Starmer? Consumer NZ Campaign Manager Jessica Walker told Heather du Plessis-Allan that there is a middle-ground for both parties to settle on. "Too many surcharges are excessive or just not disclosed or unavoidable. So there would need to be some really firm caps in place to stop consumers being ripped off." Auckland's suburban, heritage, and green areas aren't guaranteed immunity from housing intensification. The Government has revised the city's housing capacity number in a new plan - from just over 2 million, to 1.6 million, with more focus on the city and transport hubs. It follows pushback from Aucklanders - particularly in National strongholds like Ōrākei, Mt Eden and Franklin. But Housing Minister Chris Bishop says it's ultimately up to the council where houses are built. "If they wish to take growth out of the suburbs, then they can do that. The strong feedback coming through is that that's what they want to do." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Perspective with Heather du Plessis-Allan: Chris Bishop's housing u-turn is basic common sense

Heather du Plessis-Allan Drive

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 19, 2026 1:47 Transcription Available

Well, finally Chris Bishop has done the right thing and made the u-turn on the two million new houses he had planned for Auckland. It's not altogether a surprise that he did this and announced it this afternoon, because it's been rumoured for months - for the obvious reason that it's election year. Auckland is a key battleground. Aucklanders are obsessed with houses. Auckland voters who own their homes were already stressed about this plan, and if it turned into a full election issue with proper media coverage, even more of them would've become stressed. That would mean blue Auckland voters heading straight to New Zealand First, ACT or Labour. So it was a political problem for National and Bishop had to back down. But in reality, it's not just politics, is it? It's basic common sense. I think it's reasonable for an Aucklander who has sunk one to two million dollars - maybe more, maybe a bit less, but still a lot of money - into their home to feel stressed at the idea of a multi‑storey apartment block popping up next door, blocking their view, blocking their light, ruining their privacy. Whatever it is. We mock these people as NIMBYs, but actually, I think it's fair for them to want to protect the place they live in. Don't you want to protect the place you live in? This battle, though, is far from won. Anyone looking at this and thinking, “That was a close call, thank God that's over,” - it's not over. All Bishop has done is reduce the number of new houses to the point that it shouldn't impact on suburbs. But whether it does affect suburbs is a decision for Auckland Council, and that decision hasn't been made yet. So while it should, on balance, be okay, nothing is certain until the Auckland maps are released. What this is, then, is one u-turn down, and one more to go. SURRENDER MONKEY STARMER? ON EU, BORDERS, CHINA 15 U-TURNS  #JonGaunt #JonGauntTV #Live #Starmer #SurrenderMonkey #UKPolitics #Labour #EU #BorderCrisis #ChinaEmbassy #ChagosIslands  What's a surrender monkey? It's a political coward. A leader who talks tough, waves the flag, then folds at the first sign of pressure. Someone who gives ground, again and again, while pretending it's all part of a "reset". And that, folks, is exactly what Keir Starmer has become.  The latest big relaunch, reboot, reinvention — call it what you like — is just another desperate attempt by Starmer to reinvent himself again. New suit, new slogan, same weak leader. He doesn't need re-booting. He needs booting out.  Starmer said he wouldn't crawl back to the EU — now he's doing just that. He talked tough on border security — now it looks like he's simply given up. He's capitulated to China over the super-embassy. He's rolled over on the Chagos Islands. Yet somehow, with a straight face, he tells us Britain must be "war-ready" for Russia. You couldn't make it up.  This is not a fighter. This is a man in managed retreat — surrendering abroad, wobbling at home, and presiding over 15 policy U-turns that expose a government with no core beliefs and no backbone. A lame-duck premiership is unfolding before our eyes.  Every day he clings on, the country is dragged further down with him. Starmer should do the decent thing: admit defeat and go now, instead of letting this sorry farce grind on. That's the verdict — Jon Gaunt says it as it is.  #JonGaunt #JonGauntTV #Live #KeirStarmer #Starmer #SurrenderMonkey #UKPolitics #Labour #LabourGovernment #Uturns #EU #Borders #BorderCrisis #China #ChinaEmbassy #ChagosIslands #Russia #WarReady #LameDuckPM #PoliticalCrisis #Britain  Jon Gaunt, Jon Gaunt TV, live, Keir Starmer, Starmer, surrender monkey, UK politics, Labour, Labour government, policy u-turns, EU, borders, border security, China, China super embassy, Chagos Islands, Russia, war ready, lame duck prime minister, political crisis, Britain This is political blogging and hard-hitting social commentary from Triple Sony Gold Award-winning talk radio legend, Jon Gaunt — former host on BBC, Talk Radio, and Sky News. Keir Starmer has got some cheek. Some brass neck. The man who never apologises suddenly wants one from Jim Ratcliffe? You couldn't make it up. Starmer — Mr Flip-Flop, Mr U-Turn, Mr "I Didn't Really Mean That" — is now posing as the nation's moral referee. Fifteen U-turns. Fifteen. On policy, principle, and promises. Has he apologised once? Has he heck. Not to pensioners. Not to voters. Not to the people he's taken for mugs. And while he's busy wagging his finger at Sir Jim, let's talk about the apology Britain actually deserves. Because the entire political class — Labour, Tory, the lot of them — owe the British people a massive apology for the abject failure on illegal migration. Years of chaos. Billions wasted. Borders that exist in name only. And what do we get? Lectures. Excuses. And being told we're wrong for noticing. Sir Jim didn't say anything outrageous. He said what millions of people are thinking but Westminster is too frightened to admit. People are fed up. Fed up of being ignored. Fed up of being patronised. Fed up of being told to shut up and accept it. Immigration. Brexit. National sovereignty. These aren't fringe obsessions — they're the issues voters keep shouting about while politicians stick their fingers in their ears.  And here's the bit that really rattles them: the polls are coming. The next set will show it again. Ordinary Brits aren't buying the spin anymore. They don't want apologies demanded from businessmen who speak plainly — they want accountability from politicians who never do. So no, Sir Jim doesn't owe the country an apology. Keir Starmer does. And until he finds the courage to say sorry — properly, honestly, and without a lawyered-up script — he might want to stop lecturing the rest of us about decency. Because people are watching. People are angry. And this time, they're not being ignored.  Keir Starmer, Starmer apology, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, immigration crisis, UK illegal migration ,Labour u turns, political class failure, Brexit betrayal, border chaos, British voters ignored, Westminster elites, Jon Gaunt, Jon Gaunt TV, Live, UK politics, immigration, free speech UK, #KeirStarmer #Starmer #SirJimRatcliffe #ImmigrationCrisis #IllegalMigration #LabourUTurns #PoliticalClass #Brexit #BorderChaos #BritainIgnored #Westminster #JonGaunt #JonGauntTV #JonGauntStyle #Live #LiveShow #UKPolitics #EnoughIsEnough  This is political blogging and hard-hitting social commentary from Triple Sony Gold Award-winning talk radio legend, Jon Gaunt — former host on BBC, Talk Radio, and Sky News. Tank Talks

In this episode of Tank Talks, Matt Cohen and John Ruffolo rip through a stacked rundown of tech, venture capital, and geopolitical “sovereignty” theater. They open with Europe's accelerating shift away from Microsoft Office and big U.S. platforms toward open-source alternatives, then jump straight into a breaking change from Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan: Canada is back on the list of accepted incorporations, reversing a move that sparked serious backlash about Canadian startup brain drain and U.S.-domicile pressure. From there, they dissect Elon Musk's headline-grabbing SpaceX–xAI all-stock merger and why it looks way better for xAI holders than SpaceX shareholders ahead of a rumored SpaceX IPO window. The episode also digs into Canada's national AI consultation (and the government openly using multiple LLM providers like Cohere and OpenAI to process submissions), the EU's push for digital sovereignty (and the risks of swapping to “free” tools), and the brutal reality of AI-driven search gutting legacy media traffic, with the Washington Post laying off a third of its newsroom. The big throughline: information is cheap now, execution and trust are expensive, and countries (and companies) that don't adapt are about to get cooked.Y Combinator Reverses Course: Canada Back on the List (00:43)YC CEO Garry Tan adds Canada back to YC's list of accepted incorporation jurisdictions after removing it, triggering a wave of criticism. Matt and John break down what changed, why the original rationale (Canadian winners re-domiciling to the U.S.) was a flawed signal, and why the real issue is still Canadian capital formation and follow-on funding strength.SpaceX Buys xAI: A $1.25T Story Swap Before an IPO? (02:34)Matt tees up the shocker: SpaceX acquires xAI in an all-stock deal valuing xAI at $250B and SpaceX at $1T, creating a combined $1.25T entity. They discuss xAI's massive burn versus SpaceX's improving cash profile (driven by Starlink) and why this kind of move raises eyebrows heading into an IPO narrative.Second-Order Effects: When a Cash-Burning AI Company Merges Into Space Infrastructure (07:35)They debate whether this becomes a template for other pre-IPO restructures or stays a one-off “Elon special.” John says a Starlink-style consolidation would make strategic sense; folding in xAI doesn't feel like a choke-point win.Canada's AI Strategy Consultation: Government Using LLMs in the Workflow (09:10)Canada's ISED publishes a high-level summary of its AI consultation and explicitly notes using multiple LLMs and pipelines (including Cohere and OpenAI) to process massive public input. Matt frames this as a meaningful “government actually doing something” moment, even if the public is still anxious about jobs and privacy.Europe's Digital Sovereignty Push: Dropping Teams/Zoom for Open Source? (12:40)They react to reports of governments moving away from Teams/Zoom and Microsoft tooling in the name of sovereignty. Matt calls the open-source swap risky from a security and operational standpoint; John says the bigger signal is global: sovereignty is now a first-order priority, and Canada can't pretend this wave isn't coming.Washington Post Layoffs: AI Search Is Eating the Referral Economy (16:48)Matt highlights the Washington Post's reported search traffic collapse and layoffs impacting a third of the newsroom. John calls journalism an obvious early disruption target: LLMs compress content production costs, and the old newsroom pyramid doesn't match the new economics. The Survival Play: Media Becomes a Live Events Business (19:26)They land on the counter-move: stop fighting the trend and monetize what still works: brand, access, community, and in-person experiences. If content becomes commoditized, relationships and trust become the product.Connect with John Ruffolo on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/joruffoloConnect with Matt Cohen on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/matt-cohen1Visit the Ripple Ventures website: https://www.rippleventures.com/ This is a public episode. In this Wednesday Headline Brief of The Wright Report, Bryan explains the fast-moving crisis over Greenland, why European military moves triggered President Trump's tariff threats, and how the fallout is already hitting markets and mortgage rates. He then turns to two strategically vital islands, Greenland and Diego Garcia, outlining why U.S. control of both matters for missile defense, China containment, and future war planning. Bryan argues Britain's deal to hand Diego Garcia to Mauritius is dangerously naive and urges Washington to act before Beijing exploits the opening. Back in the Americas, U.S. forces seize a seventh ghost-fleet oil tanker tied to Iran, Russia, and China, while Mexico quietly extradites 37 cartel leaders, handing U.S. intelligence a major win that could reshape cartel operations this year. Domestically, Bryan covers escalating clashes between Democrats and ICE in Minnesota, the DOJ investigation into state leaders after activists stormed a Christian church, and growing evidence of coordinated efforts to shield criminal illegal aliens from deportation. He closes with economic good news from Davos, where global bankers praise the strength of the U.S. economy under President Trump, and warns listeners to prepare for a severe winter storm sweeping from Texas to the Carolinas.   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: January 21 2026 Wright Report, Greenland military escalation tariffs Europe, Denmark NATO Arctic dispute, Diego Garcia Chagos Island China risk, ghost fleet oil tanker seizure Caribbean, Mexico extradites cartel leaders intelligence win, Minnesota ICE church attack DOJ probe, Keith Ellison Don Lemon investigation, Davos bankers praise U.S. economy, winter storm Texas Carolinas

'Israel has committed genocide in Gaza': California Democrat Scott Wiener on his controversial U-turn

California State Senator Scott Wiener, the frontrunner for former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s congressional seat, insisted on the Haaretz Podcast that his change of heart regarding whether Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute a genocide did not represent a political flip-flop. In early January, Wiener faced an angry audience at a candidate’s forum, in which he debated his two rivals in the California Democratic primary to replace retiring Representative Pelosi. In a lightning round question, Wiener was asked to answer “yes” or “no” to the question of whether Israel was "committing genocide in Gaza." His rivals answered “yes” while Wiener refused to respond, prompting boos and jeers. Shortly afterwards, he released a video in which he clarified that he did believe Israel’s actions in Gaza should be defined as genocide. On the podcast, Wiener said that in the past, “I've used very, very stark language that, frankly, has not been particularly different from genocide. I chose not to use the word genocide for a variety of reasons, because, it has been weaponized against Israel and against Jews over time.” Wiener also responded to the harsh backlash from the Jewish community following the release of the video. Wiener, the co-chair of the California Legislative Jewish Caucus, said he “respects and honors” why the Jewish community feels “hurt and betrayed” by his word choice. “I also believe that we have a responsibility to call this what I believe it is,” he said. He pointed to the Quinnipiac poll published in August in which half of Americans defined Israel’s actions as a genocide and noted that it will likely be officially declared as such by the International Court of Justice. “The institutional Jewish community in this country has not grappled with that reality.” Read more: Jewish California Congressional Hopeful Says Israel Committed Genocide in Gaza, After Earlier Refusal to Do So Half of Registered U.S. Voters Say Israel Committing Genocide in Gaza, Poll Finds California Governor Gavin Newsom Says Israel's War in Gaza Was Not Genocide, but 'Destruction Broke My Heart' Analysis | Is It Important to Call Israel's Carnage in Gaza 'Genocide'?
