TCW Podcast Episode 208 - Two Dunes: The Battle for Arrakis In this episode, we delve into the expansive universe of Dune, a rich tapestry woven with themes, warnings, and boundless inspiration. Its profound impact extends beyond literature, influencing science fiction and serving as a wellspring of creativity for writers, artists, and futurists alike. Our focus shifts to the realm of gaming as we explore the intricate landscape of adaptations, particularly the simultaneous development of two landmark Dune games by Virgin Games. Cryo Interactive's adventure strategy game "Dune" and Westwood Studio's real-time strategy game "Dune 2: Battle for Arrakis" emerge as distinct creations, each influenced by its respective studio's vision. We navigate the complexities of rights acquisition following Frank Herbert's passing and the lukewarm reception of the 1984 film adaptation, shedding light on the intricate plots and tangled webs that define these two seminal Dune gaming experiences. IGDA Students Podcast: Games Industry Career Advice & Resources for Aspiring Game Developers
Ed Magnin has been working in the game industry for the past 35+ years. Earlier in his career he worked for some of the top game developers of their day – MicroProse, Cinemaware, Virgin Games, and Park Place Productions. Then in 1993, he founded Magnin & Associates and has focused on handheld games ever since — Nintendo ... Read more
He's true gaming royalty and has worked on over 300 video games since the 90s which is quite frankly staggering! The Virgin Games back catalogue that introduced us to gaming (Terminator, Aladdin, Cool Spot etc...) had his name written all over it. And who could forget his work on Earthworm Jim! It's a pleasure to introduce Adrian's interview with Tommy Tallarico... Fancy discussing this podcast? Fancy suggesting a topic of conversation? Patricia Mitchell, Thorn EMI Patricia Mitchell started at Thorn EMI in 1981. She worked in the home computer software division, evaluating software that had been submitted by programmers. Thorn EMI published many games for the Atari 8-bit computers, including River Rescue, Carnival Massacre, Orc Attack, Kickback, Submarine Commander, Computer War, and Jumbo Jet Pilot. Later she worked at Virgin Games. This interview took place on April 27, 2017. In it, we talk a little about about Steve Green. Steve bought Patricia's old Atari computer on eBay, which included pre-production versions of five Thorn EMI games. Steve made ROM dumps of those games and uploaded them to Internet Archive. A video version of this interview is available. "One of the most embarrassing things for the management at the time was they turned down a game that was submitted that was called Elite ... It was the first 3-D graphics that were rendered in wireframe." Steve Green’s ROM dumps: River Rescue Pre-Production Orc Attack Pre-Production Major League Hockey Pre-Production Computer War Pre-Production Carnival Massacre Pre-Production

Minter Dialogue Episode #206 — This interview is with Simon Burridge, former CEO of Virgin Games, once the right hand man to Sir Richard Branson, and with a meaty history in agencies, notably at JWT. Simon is now CEO of Playzoola, a very new kind of gaming offer that is about to be launched. Find out more about that game as well as his take on what it takes to make great brands today, the role of personal branding for executives and the challenges for agencies in today’s multichannel world.
