Renaissance English History Podcast: A Show About the Tudors
This is an episode about the men who were Cromwell's inner circle - Ralph Sadler, Richard Rich, and Thomas Wriothesley. As ever, thank you so much for listening! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
With Wolf Hall Series 2 having completed filming and hopefully on our screens soon, I thought the time would be right to explore the lives of two of the men who owed much of their success to Cromwell, but would eventually go on to turn against him, these men being Thomas Wriothesley and Richard Rich. Both would become infamous for their unscrupulous and frankly cruel behaviour, using whatever means possible to reach their goals, both famously turned the wheel of the rack when Anne Askew was subjected to torture, but who were these two men, what were their early lifes like, how did they come to Cromwells service and why are they viewed as such major Tudor villains?
It continues to be WHAT WOULD WALT HAVE DONE? MONTH on Escape From Vault Disney! And for our third belated episode of What Would Walt Have Done? Month, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1981 to pick an animated would-be classic that seemed to have everything going for it: a beautiful nature setting in the Bambi mold, a timeless parabolic story about the irrationality of bigotry, and a once-in-a-lifetime animation crew loaded with literally dozens of future directors. How could they possibly screw that up? Welp, dull dialogue, a meandering story, muddled character motivations, instantly forgettable songs, an inept fumbling of the anti-bigotry message, a side character who should've died inexplicably living, a pointless B-plot where two birds and a caterpillar do third-rate Tom & Jerry shtick, and what the hell, why not throw in some incompetent studio mismanagement that drove about a dozen animators to resign and form their own studio while we're at it, that's how. Meh, at least the furries got something out of it. Join Tony Goldmark, Dave Cobb, Charley Marlowe and Jacob Martin as they try to schedule a disastrous playdate for THE FOX AND THE HOUND! A Man for All Seasons, the 1966 film based on the life of Sir Thomas More won six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. During the film, Richard Rich, an ambitious young man, is seeking More's assistance in finding a position at Court. More tells Rich that he has found him a teaching position. When More tells Rich that he might be a great teacher, Rich responds despondently “and who would know it.” More replies, “You, your pupils, your friends, God. Not a bad public that.” In a world where professional success is often scored based on income and generally meaningless awards, it is important to take time to determine what your personal vision of success in life looks like. On today's episode Jake walks you through, the EOS Personal/Family V/TO which is a tool to help you chart your vision of the future, the person who you hope to be in 10 years. Make sure to download this tool before tunning into today's episode to get the most out of this incredibly important exercise.

We continued to listen to the Father‘s counsel on avoiding relationships or circumstances that can bring us spiritual harm. Such thought is not guided by a lack of love or charity or hospitality; rather it is rooted in an understanding that we are first to love the Lord our God with all of our mind, soul, heart, and strength. It is only having our love ordered and directed toward Him that our love of the things and and people within the world can be rightly ordered. We were given one example after another of how necessary it is to discern when relationships are drawing us away from God or the ways that the devil can use us through our negligence to harm others spiritually. We don't engage in the spiritual battle in a state of isolation. Nor do we seek to live the life of virtue simply for ourselves. Love demands that we be attentive to loving God above all things in order that we might draw all toward Christ. Such simplicity and clarity in the way that one views the world and oneself, creates the purity of heart that is necessary to discern the path and the will of God. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:29:57 Anthony: This is how I learned there was something wrong with some Catholic commentators. They left me agitated about the legal aspect of the Faith....am I searching myself well enough, did I do this good enough? etc. Jansenism 00:30:31 Anthony: on the church 00:30:37 Anthony: correcting the Novus ordo 00:30:42 Anthony: noveau telogie 00:32:36 Emma C: Where do we see the line between judging others vs judging their actions to know who to avoid? 00:35:42 Kevin Clay: I think we need to see that we can be that “foolish and thoughtless friend” to ourselves and not just others. We can be unwise, greedy, quarrelsome, arrogant, etc. We need to separate ourselves from our passions and the things that stir the passions. 00:44:37 Rachel: I was wondering about what you just mentioned. About being detached from ego. I was told recently to " Be at peace." in relation to something I did not realize was a distraction. At first, it made me wonder and uncomfortable. Since if I am not at peace, then something of what I spoke of must not be of God. It reminded me instantly of what a holy and wise priest told me. He said, not to speculate over matters. and it was clear, that the only thing needed was to stay in the moment with Our Lord. 00:45:35 Rachel: That these distractions are a result of idle distractions,no matter how good they appear. That God will take care of each moment and situation in His good Providence. 00:50:27 Debra: St. Bonaventure has a beautiful post-Communion prayer https://tinyurl.com/4de5cj7z 00:50:54 Anthony: Thinking of just yourself and God: In "A Man for All Seasons," St. Thomas More tries to break Richard Rich from avarice by telling him of the honor he would have as a mere teacher before God as his audience. Had Richard Rich followed this advice, he would have avoided his moral downfall later on, and maybe even in his saving his soul, much of England would have been spared some of the violence of the 1500s. "Acquire a spirit of peace and thousands around you will be saved." ~ St. Seraphim of Sarov 00:58:18 carolnypaver: If he had just said “no” the people would have wondered if the “brigand” would have been released IF ONLY the Elder had asked. The Elder removed all doubt. 01:03:03 Rachel: I left a comment above about something you addressed. It seems his current reading ties into the discipline it takes to be detached not only from the things of this world but from oneself as well. Since our nous can be darkened, idle curiosities and distractions can wreak havoc in one's own life and those around them. Since the person given to these distractions will act from that skewed vision instead of the pure place of ordering everything to God and His good will alone 01:18:14 Rachel: You mentioned that purity in our day will be like the martyrs, because of the way the world is..in a beautiful homily our priest once gave, he mentioned St. Catherine of Siena. How she felt desperately that our Lord had left her in grave temptations. Yetm he reassured her that not only had he not left her but that she was more pleasing to him. 01:18:40 Rachel: So, it seems that fighting to stay with our Lord wont always feel rosy. 01:19:15 Ambrose Little: Advertising is not like in the old days. Moby Dick was a 900 page advert for the whaling industry.

Join us for a long rant about Kaylee's favorite movie of all time, the 1994 animated Swan Princess movie directed by Richard Rich. So with that grab your tea, coffee, water, or whatever it be, and let's have tea sis!
In the 1966 film adaptation of Robert Bolt's A Man for All Seasons, the indelible Paul Schofield, who played Sir Thomas More, then Lord Chancellor of England, roared like a lion during his exchange with his young son-in-law, William Roper. The subject of their contention – Richard Rich, the man who would later betray Sir Thomas and become Lord Chancellor himself – asked the incorruptible Sir Thomas if he would employ him under his charge. Sensing Rich's lack of moral fortitude, he denies the request, and the eager Roper implores him to arrest Rich before he becomes an interloper at Court. Having committed no crime as of yet, Sir Thomas says that he shall let him go until he broke a law, even if Rich was the Devil himself.

Melbourne-based Richard – Rich to his friends – got his first job booking bands in pubs at 17, when, legally, he couldn't even be in them. Until recently, Rich booked several Melbourne pubs and clubs, including: Evelyn Hotel, Punters Club, Corner Hotel, Public Bar, Northcote Social Club, East Brunswick Club, Shebeen, 170 Russell and Newtown Social Club (NSW).In the early 2000s, he started booking and programming festivals, which include: St Kilda Festival, Queenscliff, Falls, Southbound, Pushover, Groovin' the Moo, Parklife, West Coast Blues & Roots, Northwest Festival, Splendour and The Plot. Rich has booked early tours for the White Stripes, Blink-182, QOTSA and Beck at venues, including the first ever Australian show by The Pixies; at festivals he has booked Kings of Leon, Lorde, the Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, Weird Al Yankovic, The Strokes, The Roots, Public Enemy, TV on the Radio, Black Keys, Alt-J, Arctic Monkeys and many more. In addition to being an active presence in Melbourne's music community, Rich has busied himself with a bunch of other music-related stuff over the years: – Wrote and edited Form Guide, a monthly 60-page magazine featuring interviews, album reviews and a gig guide, founded Way Over There, an artist-run record label (distributed via Shock) that released 65 full-length albums from artists such as Machine Translations, The Dead Salesmen, Gersey, Mississippi Barry and Blue Grassy Knoll, Hosted Triple R drive-time radio show ‘Incoming' for 15 years, showcasing new Australian and New Zealand music , arranged music, sorted publishing and booked bands to appear on Channel Nine's Mick Molloy Show, Most of the work Rich has done – from booking bands in pubs, to programming festivals, to self-publishing magazines – has started out on a voluntary basis. In which the Mister and the Monsters join me in reviewing THE BLACK CAULDRON (1985), currently streaming on Disney+. Loosely based on the CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN series of books by Lloyd Alexander, the film tells the story of the evil Horned King's quest for a mystical cauldron that will enable him to raise an army of the dead and conquer the world. Only a young boy named Taran (voiced by Grant Bardsley), a princess (Eilonwy/Susan Sheridan), a bard (Fflewddur Fflam/Nigel Hawthorne) and a creature named Gurgi (voiced by John Byner) stand in his way. Will the Horned King (John Hurt) reach his diabolical goal? Co-directed by Ted Berman and Richard Rich from a script credited to Ted Berman, Vance Gerry, Joe Hale, David Jonas, Roy Morita, Richard Rich, Art Stevens and Al Wilson; it was the first Disney film to receive a PG rating, feature computer-generated imagery and was only release in home video format in 1998 in part because of its commercial failure. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jokagoge/support
This is our idea of fun, talking about The Swan Princess. Sara has never seen it before, Dax has. Worlds collide, people are swans, and frogs are voiced by John Cleese. This is a magical tale about royalty and upper class living/lifestyles, but what do you expect from a movie directed by a man named "Richard Rich"? This Non-Bluth entry also has some interesting connections with a few Don Bluth films that we discuss a plenty. So does it hold up? Or does it fall from the sky like a wounded swan? Join us for the sweetest animated story of an arranged marriage ever told. We give it eight swans out of ten (probably). Yes, we were impeded by a hiatus. Yes, we had to watch these movies twice. And yes, this whole thing might be a tax scam, BUT STILL THIS SERIES HAS NOT MANAGED TO KILL US, NO MATTER HOW IT TRIES. Important questions: Whatever happened to Katja Zoch? Should Rogers and Uberta sleep together? How does Derek keep getting worse? Keep an ear out for Andy waging a private war on Christmas and Tony stopping the show to talk about Aladdin's dad. Our theme music is

Day 13: Part 2 of our Christmas donkey double feature takes a deep dive into Don Bluth’s last Disney project, “The Small One,” a short film released in front of the 1978 re-release of “Pinocchio.” On This Episode Mike Westfall (@fallwestmike), a scrawny, undernourished little beast. Lindy Kempe (@ieatvideogames), a friendly face who’s gentle and true. Brandon Medley (@brandmed) from Blessed are the Geek and good enough to be in a king’s stable. Topics and Tangents Like so many Disney movies, it’s based on a book — “The Small One: A Story for Those Who Like Christmas and Small Donkeys.” It’s directed by Don Bluth, so of course we get talking about “Dragon’s Lair.” The “Land Before Time” toys from Pizza Hut. Mouse in Transition: When Everyone Left Disney, Chapter 7 of Steve Hulett’s inside look at Disney Feature Animation deals with Don Bluth’s exit from the company after working on “The Small One.” The time Don Bluth returned to Walt Disney Animation Studios after 40 years. Assistant director Richard Rich went on to direct all 8 movies in the “Swan Princess” franchise. I’m sorry to have just informed you that there are 8 Swan Princess movies. Wikipedia’s entry for “The Small One” includes a very strange line about the other donkeys in the stable. One piece of silver, Small One’s selling price, may be about $5 or $6 in 2018 money, if I did the math right. Edits for home video include the Merchants’ song, and the Star of Bethlehem getting extra rays of light to look less cross-shaped. To avoid too much foreshadowing, I guess. Gordon Jump, the voice of Joseph, went on to guest star in a very special episode of “Diff’rent Strokes.” Yeah. Sorry. Somehow we end up talking about Pixar movies, including “Cars 3,” a.k.a. “Rocky IV, but with Cars.” Previous Episodes of This Podcast Mentioned Season 1, Bonus 2: The Adventures of the American Rabbit Season 2, Episode 12: Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey You can visit the Advent Calendar House on the web at adventcalendar.house, on Twitter @adventcalhouse, and on the Christmas Podcast Network.

Harlem, NY - 1984. Imagine a world without social media. No Facebook, Instagram or Youtube. A world were influencers do not come from the screens but from the streets. A world where trends and styles are built far away from the the 5th Avenue. Well, this world existed, in the 80's Harlem, where a young hustler emerged from the concrete to create esthetics that would define the style of Rap for the next decades. 1985's THE BLACK CAULDRON represents Disney at its nadir as an animation studio, resulting in a box office failure and years of obscurity. It's first PG-rated animated feature struggled to find an audience clamoring for its dark and violent tones. However, it has garnered a significant cult following over the years, with its tales of swords, sorcerers, and black magic-infused battles brought to life with stunning visuals that incorporate the studios first forays into computer-generated elements into its hand-drawn animated cels. Does it deserve obscurity, or is it about time to reappraise a hidden gem in Disney's vast and storied filmography?
This week, in continuation of Non-Disney Animation, we take a look at the Richard Rich classic animated film, The Swan Princess. It's the story of a Princess, and a Prince, a magic spell, and a terrible villain. We poke fun at some of the common fairy tale tropes, at Prince Derek himself, and some rather cringe-worthy moments, as well as a few of those Swan Princess sequels. Enjoy! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-feminist-critique/support
I swear to God that's the real name. Important questions: Is this movie series a tax scam? How many times can a prince almost kill his girlfriend? Why did they move into that castle!? Hey guys! Sorry for a bit of scheduling hiccup! Finals, amirite? Anywho, this week we're coming at you with an episode about the Swan Princess with Kat! Kat is a fellow podcaster who hosts a few podcasts on her site: Heart and Cel. Her and her boyfriend do analyses of Macross and Utena and she has a podcast on there with Robbie! The podcast she and Robbie share is Shikon Seekers, a much more chill show where we just rundown episodes of Inuyasha. It's all good stuff, so check it out! The Swan Princess came out in 1994 and was directed by Richard Rich, an animator who left Disney (that Robbie isn't entirely convinced isn't Richie Rich in some horrifying time loop). Overall, it's an okay movie and we have a good time ripping some of its logic to shreds. Have a listen!

Hey, did you know this episode is dropping on our one year anniversary? Neither did Ali nor Jon! That's why they don't talk about that in this episode featuring so many other amazing milestones: 1985's The Black Cauldron is their first animated movie, the first movie neither of them had seen before, and the first time they couldn't even come up with a damn hour's worth of discussion, even including X-rated tangents. Ali talks about wedding night intimacy. Jon goes deep into Gurgy's lost sodomy scene. No one ends up satisfied. The Black Cauldron was directed by Ted Berman and the not-at-all-unfortunately named Richard Rich, based on the popular young adult fantasy series The Chronicles of Prydain, by HHHHLloyd Alexander, and starring the voices of Grant Bardsley, Susan Sheridan, Nigel Hawthorne, John Hurt, John Huston, and John Goddamn Byner.
In the inaugural episode of I Will Fight You, our hosts discuss the bizarre nexus of their childhoods that is Richard Rich’s The Swan Princess. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Some on the Left Finally Understand their Leadership Crisis Most Liberals are a bit slow, but eventually some do catch on. Yesterday, the following article appeared on the website, Vox.com: What is news on Vox was highlighted on GreatVocalMajority.com 8 months ago. Better late than never. I'll say this much about the Vox article. At least it is an honest attempt to point out the weakness of the Democratic Party at the state and local level. Not many Democrats are willing to do that. They are so busy crafting excuses for their failures, they never stop to consider that perhaps their failures are policy related. But not so with Matthew Yglesias, who every cogently, albeit belatedly points out what should have been obvious to Democrats in the immediate aftermath of the 2014 Congressional Midterms. The question that needs to be asked is why has this catastrophe for Democrats been largely ignored or dismissed? There are several reasons. Mr. Yglesias believes it's denial. This is true, but it is a denial that is media enabled. Cable news and the blogosphere are almost entirely focused on politics at the national level. Almost no attention at all is given to sate level politics and even when it is, it centers on a controversy. Such was the case with Scott Walker in Wisconsin, for example. Coupled with the fact that Conservative and Tea Party groups have been organizing locally across the nation, without any countervailing answer from the left, the Democrats have allowed the initiative at the state and local levels to be seized away from them and there is little chance they will wrest it back any time soon. GreatVocalMajority.com Report on Democrat Leadership Crisis in February 2015. Great Vocal Majority Analysis of State party alignment How Democrats are Reacting to the Problem In response, the national Democratic Party has become much more radicalized. Now, candidates and some other party members are speaking openly of allowing illegal immigrants voting privileges. Although it is hard to imagine with the Motor Voter Law, at least some illegals aren't already voting. Furthermore, the fear of a wave of newly registered illegal alien voters has created a renewed effort at assuring the integrity of election results with Voter ID laws. It should come as no surprise that Democrats see this as a major threat to their chances. They should. Nevertheless, the Republicans seem a bit slow footed in their defense of the Voter ID laws. Democrats howl that the Voter ID laws are actually voter suppression and propose to fix a non-existent problem. This argument seems powerful, but it really isn't once you poke at it. To explain this, think of voting as a process, which it is. It is the process by which we elect people to office. Many years ago, more than I would admit to, I was an auditor. As an auditor, one of your responsibilities is to ensure there is no fraudulent activity in the organization under audit. But even when no fraud exists, an auditor's job doesn't end there. The auditor must ensure that the processes being used by the organization aren't vulnerable to fraud. This is key to understand when considering the need for Voter ID Laws. The absence of voter fraud is no assurance that the voting process is secure from risk. If the process of voting relies on the honesty of the people engaged in the process, without the necessary safeguards, then it is only a matter of time before the opportunistic fraudster avails themselves of those vulnerabilities. So, when Democrats say, "there is no evidence of voter fraud", the correct response from anyone interested in voting integrity should be: "We should't wait for voter fraud to happen, when the process we now have is vulnerable to it and there is a reasonable solution that will accommodate every single person who is eligible to vote." The integrity of the vote should be of paramount importance to all Americans, especially since there have been so many close elections, turning on recounts. Victory in an election is of less importance than assuring the public that the final result is the true voice of the people. Integrity matters. Or at least it should. Even to Democrats. And one must wonder why on earth it does not if there is no monkey business going on right now. The divisiveness and radicalization of the Democratic Party that we are now witnessing is a direct result of the clear an unambiguous repudiation of their agenda by the American people at the state and local level. But in their response to it, take a look at what the Democrats are doing. They are demanding the legalization of at least 10 million illegal aliens, most of whom, conventional wisdom dictates, would vote Democratic. They are playing the race card, labeling the Voter ID laws, a "poll tax", despite the fact that Voter ID cards are free and nobody would be prohibited from voting without one. Every state with a voter id law, provides for free id's and provisional ballots to those without one, and 10 business days to acquire one in order to vote. That's hardly a poll tax. But the race card is all about fear and it works on a great many people. Democrats stoke fear on other ways, too. Asserting that the Republicans are conducting a "war on women." From the Occupy Democrats to the Black Lives Matter movement, Democrat radials are seeking to polarize and divide Americans along lines of race, class and gender. Slandering wealthy GOP contributors is especially galling since Democrats have an equal number of wealthy contributors who don't hide their agendas. Men like George Soros, Tom Steyer, Richard Rich, among a number of others. In a nutshell, the Democrats are desperately attempting to juice their base with fear, while adding to it with millions of illegal aliens. They hope to nullify the expressed will of the country. And they don't seem as interested in how it's done more than the fact that it is done. They have placed their leftist vision ahead of the will of Americans to support that vision. For their part, the Republican establishment has offered no alternative and has profited by beating something with nothing. This cannot be sustained. Their political advantage cannot be maintained without presenting their case for governing. But the problem for the Republican establishment is the Tea Party. You see, the Tea Party and other conservative groups are largely responsible for this resurgence, but the GOP establishment has until now been too entrenched to yield power to the Conservatives. The establishment is sensitive media reaction, which is overwhelmingly hostile to Republicans and serves as an arm of the Democratic Party so often, they can be indistinguishable. The timidity of the GOP establishment can be ended by a strong, conservative voice.`

**Today's host(s):** Scot Landry and Fr. Matt Williams **Today's guest(s):** Fr. Chip Hines, Pastor of St. Mary Parish, Wrentham, and co-host of CatholicTV's "Spotlight" * [St. Thomas More](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14689c.htm) * [St. John Fisher](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08462b.htm) **Today's topics:** St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher **Summary of today's show:** Scot, Fr. Matt, and Fr. Chip Hines commemorate the feast day of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher by discussing their martyrdom, especially in light of the movie of More's life, "A Man for All Seasons." They also discuss how More shows Catholics today how to be authentic witness with regard to politics and public life. **1st segment:** Scot welcomes Fr. Matt back to the show. Fr. Matt is preparing a young adult retreat this weekend at St. Thecla's in Billerica called "Life is Good in the Holy Spirit." The young adults always come back strengthened in their faith. There are specific talks that build up to praying for the release of the Holy Spirit in a new way in their life. They also have Adoration, Mass, Confession, small group discussion, and plenty of fellowship. There are about 12 different team members running the weekend. On today's show, this is the feast of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, Catholics who were beheaded for standing up for the Catholic faith against King Henry VIII, who was leading the Church of England away from the Church. Thomas More is one of Scot's favorite saints. Fr. Matt said they help us to understand what it's like to live as a Catholic in this world. Scot said the 1966 movie "A Man for All Seasons" is a good way to enter into the life of St. Thomas More. **2nd segment:** Scot welcomes Fr. Chip back to the show. He's been very busy at St. Mary in Wrentham with preparations for parish activities throughout the summer. With regard to the movie "A Man for All Seasons", Fr. Chip said that it's in his top-five movies of all time. It's a classic and there's nothing bad you can say about this movie. It's engaging with great performances. Scot said St. Thomas More was being pressured by King Henry VIII to accede to his wishes, to say that he was the supreme head of the church in England, and not the Pope. Many other leaders in England knuckled under to the pressure, but St. Thomas More resisted because of his faith. He is a model of courage under adversity. Fr. Chip said if you want to show this value to somebody, this movie is a perfect example. Thomas More did not waver in the end. Fr. Chip said he did not become heroic overnight, but throughout his whole life, while this movie gives a snippet of that. It's a great image of what it means to be a Catholic in public life.. The movie starts a few years before he became chancellor of England. He was a tremendous intellect and a lawyer. Fr. Matt said he loved his family and was a devoted father. He was deeply faith-filled and wasn't afraid to let that affect his professional life. He was a judge who had a reputation for efficiency in adjudicating cases. Fr. Chip said he was known for his honesty as well. He couldn't be bribed. Leading a heroic Catholic life, you need to be true to yourself and your faith and to God. He was a prolific writer as well. Fr. Chip said being a good father figure was important to him. He even insisted that his daughters receive a good classical education. He was born in 1477 and died on July 6, 1535, beheaded at the order of King Henry VIII. St. John Fisher was martyred on June 22, 1535. He was a bishop, the only one who did not sign the oath that King Henry VIII was demanding. They were beatified on the same day and canonized on the same day. They are heroes for standing up for their faith in the face of intense pressure. **3rd segment:** Scot said "A Man for All Seasons" was one of the first movies on virtue and courage he'd seen. Fr. Chip said the movie opens with a scene of a message being brought to St. Thomas More. It's beautifully filmed so the viewer feels like they're on the river. It sets the scene for what's coming up. When you think about our lives today with instant communication, this was like the instant message of the 14th century. Fr. Chip said it's a fun movie as well as having a great message. It won Best Movie and Best Actor at the Oscars in 1966. In this first scene, Thomas More is asked to visit with Cardinal Wolsey, the chancellor of England at the time. Wolsey wanted to ask More how he can help the king have an heir. The king had already had a dispensation from the Pope to marry his cousin, but she did not produce a son so he wanted to divorce her to marry another woman. The cardinal was presented with the problem of trying to satisfy the king's demand which was in conflict with Church teaching. Thomas More was clear that this wasn't their business, but was up to the Holy Father. There is a character called Richard Rich, a young man who wanted desperately to receive a position in the law with Thomas More. He eventually succeeded Thomas More as chancellor. Fr. Matt said the character is fascinating. More can see his strengths and weaknesses, how he could be tempted in greed or lust for power and seduced by his own intellect. More tried to encourage him into a field where he could be safe from such temptations and where he could live virtuously. Ultimately, Rich ends up joining More's nemesis, Cromwell, and tells the lie that becomes the false evidence that convicts More of being disloyal to the throne. Scot said More sensed Rich's potential as well as the danger of keeping him around, yet he still tried to mentor him and help him find his true vocation. Scot compared it to how Jesus knew Judas would betray him, yet kept him close and tried to form him so He could forgive him. More loved Rich loved him like a second father to the young man. Fr. Chip said in the actor's performance you can see More's love and respect for Rich and how he saw the danger in his path. You see people like this in your own life, people who are traveling on a bad path and won't respond to your prompting to go another direction. Fr. Matt said More was really being a friend to him. So often we hear that people will go along with what someone wants to do because that's being their friend, when friendship considers what's really good for him. It invites us to consider how important it is to be a good friend and to mentor, especially young people, in the faith, to help them discover the gifts that they have and encourage them in that direction. And not to be afraid to say that we don't think this is not a good direction, speaking in love. Fast-forwarding in the movie, upon Wolsey's death, the king appoints Thomas More as his new chancellor. The heat on the chancellor to find a way for the king to divorce his wife and re-marry is turned up on Thomas. He tries to stay as distant from it as possible, until Henry comes to visit him. Fr. Chip said Henry is trying to use his friendship with More to convince him of the need to accede to the king's desire. That unwavering faith in what the Church says is pretty adamant and strong in his personality and shown well through the actor's performance. It becomes a battle of the wills and More isn't the one to blink. He's very careful not to say something that will result him in being beheaded. King Henry knows that in all of England, Thomas More is respected for his integrity and honesty. And it's because of that reputation that the king wants More's support so that the people will be have confidence that the king is doing the right thing. The queen, Catherine, is not unpopular so the king wanted to win their support first. More was between an all-powerful king as well as his well-meaning family who did not understand his strong stance, on the one hand, and his unwavering commitment to truth, integrity, and his faith on the other. All these years later, More retains the respect of people and is known for his honesty. Fr. Matt said he is authentic which happens when the outward appearance matches up with the who I am in the interior life. Catholics are called to be witnesses by the way we live our lives with authenticity and integrity. You can take away many things from a man, but you can't take away his witness. He can give it away, however. It takes great courage to live that witness. **4th segment:** It's time to announce the winner of the weekly **WQOM Benefactor Raffle**. Our prize this week is a copy of the 2 audio CD set [How Mary & the Rosary Can Change Your Life](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1932927131/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=pilo0e-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=1932927131), by Marcellino D'Ambrosio. We'll be announcing the winner each Wednesday during “The Good Catholic Life” program. **5th segment:** Scot said More talks in the movie about the important role of conscience: When leaders forsake their private conscience in their public duties, they lead their countries on a short route to chaos. Fr. Matt said the conscience is the place where the Lord speaks to the soul and the Lord informs the conscience to make decisions in light of God's plan for how He made the world to be. We need to have informed consciences when it comes to moral issues. It's not just our conscience, but an informed conscience. The Church's teachings are formed in rationality. Fr. Chip said people in public life today will say, I'm personally opposed, but I can't impose my conscience on someone else. But they're not imposing. The conscience is informed by the truth, so why wouldn't you spread the truth as opposed to spreading a lie. Scot said the Holy Father has said that if your conscience rooted in the truth is not heeded, then someone else's conscience is being imposed on you. Private conscience is rooted and based on principles. St. Thomas More is saying that a government official needs to have a well-rooted private conscience in order to lead and do their public duties. If they're not rooted and instead put their fingers in the wind to do what's popular, he says they are leading their country by a short route to chaos. Public officials aren't elected just to vote on what the majority of their constituents want, but are elected because of their proper judgment and formation. We elect them in order to trust them to get into the details that we can't in the rest of society and apply their good judgment, virtue, and values. Fr. Chip said our system of government has turned into a system of polls and where people want us to go this day. To find corruption, all you have to see is three speakers of the House in the Mass. Legislature in a row convicted of felonies. What's wrong with this picture? We keep sending the same sorts of people back to office and get the same result. Scot said we, as voters, have allowed our system of government to be dumbed down. Politicians legislate by polls, because we as voters have allowed them to. There is a lot less expected of candidates in races, probably because we're a soundbite media and because the voters have stopped demanding substance. Voters need to reward people for taking ethical stands, even if we disagree with them because we want people of true value and principle in office even if we agree with them only 80% or 90% of the time. Fr. Matt said it reflects the lack of appreciation by voters for virtuous leadership. Politicians are a reflection of ourselves as a country. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. It takes courage to consistently stand for something. Thomas More was a man of authenticity. The king went to Thomas More because the people were watching him and saw him as a man if integrity. His lack of support hindered the king's goals. Fr. Chip said voters have to decide if the current system is what we want for the future. He'd rather stand with someone who stood for something rather than someone wavering in the wind. Scot said More had a discussion with his future son-in-law, who pleaded with More to circumvent the law in order to fix the ills he saw in society. More asked him if he would cut down every law in England to get at the "devil" and the son-in-law said he would. And More said, And when the last law is cut down and the devil turns on you at last, where will you hide? This country is planted thick with laws and if you cut them down, do you think you'd stand upright in the winds that would buffet you? "Yes, I'd give the devil the benefit of the law for my own safety's sake." Scot said most elected officials respect that we have a system of laws and if you don't like the way things are, you change the law through the legislature and normal protocols. But recent examples of the undermining of the law include same-sex marriage in Massachusetts where the law was not changed legislatively, but through the courts and the voters weren't given a chance to vote on it. Also, when Mass. voters have passed tax reforms in referenda, they were ignored. And when the Defense of Marriage Act was passed nationally, President Obama instructed the Justice Department not to advocate to defend the law. There might be times when we're on the side where the law doesn't benefit us and if we encourage people on our side to ignore the rule of law, it's to our own peril. It's troubling when laws get circumvented either through the judiciary overstepping their bounds or the executive not enforcing the laws. Fr. Chip said it's also troubling when those in power change the rules to stay in power and people who wish to serve can't beat them in elections so keep having the same people over and over again. We have a judiciary that constantly oversteps its bounds and the Founding Fathers put the checks and balances in place for a reason. We see those checks and balances break down in the past decade and cowardice in the legislature, where they wouldn't stand up and let the people be heard. Thomas More would not have stood for that. Fr. Matt said it also speaks of the need for a new evangelization. The Church has to continue to find ways to help people whose hearts have grown cold in the faith. People are being more evangelized by the gospel of the culture than the Gospel of the Jesus Christ. It calls for the Church to reclaim her prophetic role of teaching, preaching, witnessing and evangelizing. Scot said in the state of New York the legalization of gay marriage is before the state legislature and Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York has spoken up on the Church's views and many folks have been attacking him from all sides. He has spoken the truth with courage and joviality and certainly it can't be comfortable for anyone to read headlines calling him a bigot. Scot said there's no one better at articulating the Church's teachings in the public sphere with the right tone and emphasis. Yet he still takes a beating in the press. **6th segment:** In the end, Thomas More is martyred. Fr. Matt said the word comes from Greek and it means "witness." They are witnesses by the shedding of their blood. They are willing to die for their belief in Christ. More was willing to die rather than compromise his faith in the Lord or be a false witness. Fr. Matt said it shows that faith is messy. St. Paul was a real men dealing with persecution, but we can forget that with a cursory reading of his letters. It's not easy to live for Christ in the world. Fr. Chip said we have a sanitized idea of Christianity. We see saints with halos in pictures and think everything is great, but we forget that they struggled heroically for the faith. Maybe we don't talk about it enough. People who show heroic witness need to be exalted. Scot said Americans of today don't often encounter persecution for our faith, but there are martyrs around the world all the time. Just this year, there have been martyrs in Pakistan, Ivory Coast, Iraq, Egypt, Indonesia, and more. Fr. Chip he hears people say they couldn't make it to Mass because the parking lot was full, yet people in Latin America will walk miles to go to Sunday Mass, even if they can once per month. Previous generations of American Catholics have suffered white martyrdom, which is suffering for the faith, but not physical violence. Fr. Matt said we endure martyrdom because we love Jesus, He's worth dying for or even just losing our reputations. We need to pray for courage to live our faith intentionally. And my witness has an overflowing effect on other people because others see us living our faith. Scot said St. Thomas was able to have this courage because he was a man of prayer. Fr. Chip said Thomas' final words were, "I was the king's good servant, but God's first." We need to remember that in our own lives. To be in service to God first. More even forgave the executioner and told him to do his duty.
