Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are back for their latest movie retrospective. This time they're chatting about Disney's Mulan for its 25th anniversary. Mulan is an animated adventure film directed by Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft. It is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. It opened in theaters on June 19, 1998. In the film, a young Chinese woman named Mulan (Ming-Na Wen, singing voice by Lea Salonga) poses as a man to take her frail father's place in the Imperial Army. Aiding Mulan is the miniature dragon Mushu (Eddie Murphy). Other characters include Captain Li Shang (BD Wong, singing voice by Donny Osmond), the villainous Hun leader Shan Yu (Miguel Ferrer), and the Chinese Emperor (Pat Morita). Mulan opened to a positive reception and outgrossed Disney's previous two animated films. It received one Academy Award nomination for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score. Mulan spawned a direct-to-video sequel in 2004 and a live action remake in 2020. Aaron and Josh discuss the movie's plot, performances, animation, and songs. The public health crisis of addiction and overdoses continue to rise. Fentanyl poisoning now ranks No.1 on the biggest list of killers of 18-45 yr. olds in the United States, for the last three years by a wide margin. Destigmatizing mental illness and addiction is crucial to empower those suffering to reach out for help. Many people do not understand and also fail to educate themselves on the importance of mental health and due to stereotypes and misrepresentations, some people do not understand that addiction is a disease and believe that people may even choose addiction. Much of the stigma comes not only from friends, family, the public, and the judicial system, but many believe that it is a moral character flaw and fail to see people struggling with addiction through the lens of integrity of individuals as whole human beings. In this episode I have a conversation with my next-door neighbors Eileen and Barry Cook whose daughter Catie died recently at the age of 31 of fentanyl poisoning after struggling with addiction for over 15 years. The original idea for Arthur Christmas, at the time called Operation Rudolph, had a much darker thread in it involving reindeer burgers. Luckily, the story evolved and turned into a wild story about a hereditary line of Santas running things with a million elves helping out (really doing all the work). The story is one of commerce and efficiency, but also about the meaning of Christmas and believing. Sarah Smith had experience with complex stories, so this film's clever script fits right in with her live action work she'd done before with Armando Iannucci. Directing her first animated film, with help from Barry Cook, she crafted a holiday classic. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our 10 Year Anniversary series with Smith's 2011 film Arthur Christmas. Arthur Christmas makes us happy. This is an easy film to love. Wonderful characters, fun character design from the minds of the Aardman team, and a heartwarming story about Santa's youngest son, Arthur, who works in the mail department. He may be a bit clumsy, but he has the true spirit of the holiday. James McAvoy brings him to life in a performance full of goofy charm. He's helped by Jim Broadbent, Hugh Laurie, and Bill Nighy as they set out to deliver a present that got missed. The story is touching, and it's smarter than a lot of animated films. Small jokes, big jokes, Aardman jokes – everything's in there. And we laugh a lot throughout this one. But there's also a thread of commerce and big business taking over operations of this sort of place, brought to live in Hugh Laurie's character Steve, who has transformed delivery with the sleigh into the highest of high tech jobs, with the actual sleigh replaced by what looks like the Starship Enterprise painted red. It's a genius idea, and it speaks to the idea of commerce vs. the true meaning of Christmas. It's hard to go wrong with Arthur Christmas. We have such a great time with this one. It was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, with story by Robert D. San Souci and screenplay by Rita Hsiao, Philip LaZebnik, Chris Sanders, Eugenia Bostwick-Singer, and Raymond Singer. Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer and BD Wong star in the English version, while Jackie Chan provided the voice of Captain Li Shang for the Chinese dubs of the film. Episode 80 of B.Boomer Unleashed, "The Fascination Of Socialism - An Interview With Yet Another Millennial (Part 2)" concludes our discussion with Millennial Sam Denning with his perspective on this recent phenomenon. Sam adds valuable insight to this important subject. I apologize that the audio on the recorded interview was not up to our usual standards. That's not Sam's fault, it was mine. I really don't know why his audio volume was weaker than usual for recorded interviews. I suppose that's what happens when you are a strictly low budget one man show. This week in post production, I tried to take my audio level down and Sam's to the maximum so at least you could have one volume setting to listen to us both. It's still not ideal, but it's the best I could do with it. I hope you will listen as Sam and I finish our discussion. I hope to have Sam on to discuss another topic at a future date. As an award-winning animator and director, he has produced some iconic characters that Disney fans know and love to this day, including Pumbaa from The Lion King, Iago from Aladdin, Cogsworth from Beauty and the Beast, and many more. Tony also co-directed Mulan (1998) with Barry Cook and went on to develop various other projects at Disney and beyond. Today, Tony co-hosts an animation-focused podcast with his twin brother, Tom Bancroft, and teaches at Azusa Pacific University while continuing to work on an array of animated film and television projects. Barry Cook is a West Virginia native, a military veteran, and has been a seasoned forester for the last 45 years. Barry began his career as a logging superintendent and has slowly risen the ranks since then, starting his own company in 2005. He currently serves as the Director and State Forester of the West Virginia Division of Forestry. On the show, Barry shares lessons he learned as an impatient manager, the types of projects he's working on for the State and encourages young professionals to become bilingual. Both of these movies have action, adventure, romance and an unlikely hero. The first is the great chinese biography "Mulan" directed by Barry Cook and starring Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, BD Wong, Miguel Ferrer, Harvey Fierstein, June Foray, George Takei & Pat Morita. ----more----The other is a personal favorite of Xan's based on the famous arabic folktale One Thousand and One Nights. One of Sarah's favorite Disney Films of all time is Mulan, a 1998 American animated musical action-comedy-drama film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation based on the Chinese legend of Fa Mulan. The 36th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics, it was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, with story by Robert D. San Souci and screenplay by Rita Hsiao, Philip LaZebnik, Chris Sanders, Eugenia Bostwick-Singer, and Raymond Singer. Ming-Na, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer and BD Wong star in the English version, while Jackie Chan provided his voice for the Chinese dubs of the film.
