Well, if you ever wanted to hear a 2-hour-ish rumination on the confusing and contradictory sexual politics of THE TWILIGHT SAGA, you're in luck. How does this series feel like an obvious metaphor for Christian purity culture while also having no sense of its own metaphorical resonance? What does Renesmee's “miraculous” conception say about the films' attitudes towards sex? Is it possible to tell a compelling story about a human-vampire romance if that story is solely in service to a stereotypical “happily-ever-after”? It's a minefield! At least the Volturi are fun. Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 American animated musical romantic fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 30th Disney animated feature film and the third released during the Disney Renaissance period, it is based on the 1756 fairy tale of the same name by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont (who was only credited in the French dub),[6] while also containing ideas from the 1946 French film of the same name directed by Jean Cocteau.[7] The film was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise (in their feature directorial debuts) and produced by Don Hahn, from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton. Beauty and the Beast is a 2017 American musical romantic fantasy film directed by Bill Condon from a screenplay by Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Mandeville Films, the film is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1991 animated film of the same name, itself an adaptation of Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont's 1756 version of the fairy tale. Starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens as the eponymous Belle and the Beast, the film features an ensemble and choir cast including Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Audra McDonald, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson. Hear the story of EPCOT's Cranium Command with Imagineer Jerry Rees and Directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale.
For the first episode of 2023, Chris and Alex are back into the world of Disney Feature Animation, following up earlier discussions of The Emperor's New Groove (Mark Dindal, 2000) and Treasure Planet (Ron Clements & John Musker, 2002) with Episode 111, which looks at the studio's 2001 feature film Atlantis the Lost Empire (Gary Trousdale & Kirk Wise, 2001), a science-fiction adventure that draws inspiration from Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870). Joining them as their very special guest is the film's co-director, Gary Trousdale, who was part of the celebrated Disney Renaissance and together with Kirk Wise also directed the Disney features Beauty and the Beast (1991) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996). Gary was first hired by Walt Disney Feature Animation back in 1984 as an effects animator on The Black Cauldron (Ted Berman & Richard Rich, 1985). He then moved onto story for Oliver & Company (George Scribner, 1988) and worked as a Storyboard Artist for The Little Mermaid (Ron Clements & John Musker, 1989), before finally taking up directorial duties on Beauty and the Beast that was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Gary later moved to DreamWorks and, more recently, is credited as creative consultant for the 2017 reimagining of Beauty and the Beast (Bill Condon, 2017). Listen as they discuss the Disney Renaissance as a period of industrial and creative renewal via the studio's return to a Golden Age sensibility; the siting of Atlantis: The Lost Empire within Disney's post-2000 era of narrative and stylistic heterogeneity; the 1914 setting of the Verne-inspired film, and how its images of war bear the influence of advancements in early twentieth-century technology; the formal connection between animated musical numbers and action sequences; and what the adventure narrative of Atlantis: The Lost Empire and its application of CGI has to say about Hollywood animation's own technological frontier. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

Book Vs. Movie: Beauty & the Beast The French Fairy Tale from the 1700s Vs the 1991 Animated Classic The Margos continue our month of Disney films with the 1991 classic Beauty and the Beast which is based on a fairy tale written in 1740 by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villenenueva and then later abridged by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont in 1756 for a collection of children's stories. The simplest version is by de Beaumont. A French merchant has six children with “Beauty” being the youngest daughter. She is considered the most beautiful and has the nicest in temperament so she is her father's favorite. When he loses his fortunes and then has the opportunity to get it back, she only asks for a rose from him as they have not grown in over a year. Her father tries to take a rose from a garden but is stopped by “The Beast” who runs the manor. The Beast asks the merchant to send his daughter to live with him as his fiance. He treats her well (though she is basically a captive) and she is kept company with a fairy (who wishes she would treat the Beast as more than just a friend) and animated furniture who act as servants for the Beast. Eventually, Beauty goes home and then comes back to find the Beast dying from her absence. She kisses him and he becomes a handsome Prince. They get married and live happily ever after. Disney attempted to make this as an animated picture in the mid 20th Century but no one could figure how to adapt it. With the success of The Little Mermaid in 1989, a new team with Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise, Linda Woolverton, Howard Ashman, and Alan Menken created a masterpiece that lives on to this day. (30 years after its release!) So, between the fairy tale and the animated movie--which did we prefer? In this ep the Margos discuss: The basics of the plot and the two women credited with the story The history of Disney musicals and how “Belle” changed the idea of a Disney “Princess” The main differences between the fairy tale & film. Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for the June edition of their movie retrospectives. This month they're talking about Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame for its 25th anniversary. The Hunchback of Notre Dame opened in theaters on June 21, 1996. It is an animated musical directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo. Set in 1482 Paris, the film follows Quasimodo (Tom Hulce, Amadeus), who rings the bells atop the Notre Dame cathedral. Convinced by his master Judge Frollo (Tony Jay, Twins) that he is a monster due his hunched back and abnormal appearance, Quasimodo stays in the bell tower. However, one day he ventures outside. It's there he befriends a kind and beautiful dancer named Esmeralda (Demi Moore, Ghost). Quasimodo's only other friends are three talking gargoyles, Victor (Charles Kimbrough, Murphy Brown), Hugo (Jason Alexander, Seinfeld), and Laverne (Mary Wickes, Sister Act). Rounding out the cast is Captain Pheobus (Kevin Kline, The Road to El Dorado), who serves under Frollo but disapproves of his cruelty. The Hunchback of Notre Dame garnered a generally positive reception from critics and moviegoers, and the film earned an Oscar nomination for its score. Gene Siskel awarded the movie three and a half stars while Roger Ebert awarded it four out of four. However, there was controversy over the film's content, particularly with parents complaining that the religious themes and Frollo's lust for Esmeralda were inappropriate for young children. Regardless, Hunchback made $325 million on a $100 million budget and was the fifth highest grossing film of 1996. Josh and Aaron talk about how Hunchback factored into their childhood, plus all the movie's elements, including the plot, characters, music, and animation. The two also discuss the film's direct-to-video sequel and planned live action remake. For more Disney animated films, listen to Aaron and Josh talk about The Lion King and The Emperor's New Groove. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is streaming on Disney+.

Jean Cocteau's visionary rendition of Madame de Beaumont's fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast," itself the retelling of a story that may be several millennia old, is the topic of this Weird Studies episode, which proposes a journey down lunar paths to the crossroads where love and death intersect. Drawing on Surrealism, myth, and the occult, Cocteau's 1946 film transcends the limitations of media to become a living poem, a thing that is also a place, a place that is also a mind. This conversation touches on the genius of the child, the mysteries of Eros, the monstrosity of consciousness, and the sorcery of cinema. This week we discuss season 1, episode 7, “Realization Time,” which originally aired on May 17, 1990 on ABC. As always, we will be revealing plot details, so we assume that listeners will have watched Twin Peaks season 1 through episode 7. It's an action-packed episode, with plenty of themes for our crew to explore. Colin notes the prominence of the color blue, dissects the increasing juxtapositions of sweetness and horror (think blood on the doughnuts), and how male power terrorizes. Damon explores Agent Cooper's complex moral code. For our character spotlight, Jonathan takes a closer look at Sherilyn Fenn's portrayal of Audrey Horne. Jennifer, the AV nerd of the group, scrutinizes the variety of ways that recording, playback and feedback are expressed in this week's episode. For “The Twist,” we chat about costuming and disguises, from bad wigs to cartoon homages to ball caps.LISTEN: BuzzSprout | Google Podcasts | Spotify | RSS | and more!S1, E4 NOTES: Harley Peyton (episode writer)Caleb Deschanel (episode director)Madchen Amick (Shelley Johnson)Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne)Reflections: An Oral History of Twin Peaks (2014, book, written by Brad DukesBeauty and the Beast (1991, Disney film, directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise)Mulholland Drive (2001, film, directed by David Lynch)Sheryl Lee (Maddy Ferguson/Laura Palmer)Laura (1944, film, directed by Otto Preminger)Cary Granite (Cary Grant parody on The Flintstones)Elsa (main character from 2013 Disney film Frozen)Patricia Norris (costume designer on multiple Lynch projects) Nancy Steiner (Twin Peaks Season 3 costume designer)Twin Peaks costume retrospective from Observer.com (UK)
