How do you answer life's 3 big questions--first posed on this podcast in episode 018 by coroner Rob Ryg: Where did we come from, what's this life for, and what happens next? My guest in this episode, Natalie Niksa, reveals her answers to the Big Three. And in doing so, she challenges all of us to consider our own answers to those questions. Natalie's answers are far from conventional, and therein lies some of the gold in this episode. When we take time to view the world through someone else's eyes, we invite their perspective to challenge and change our own. And that, my friends, is a good thing. There's way more to Natalie's story than we could ever hope to cover in one episode. And it is a WILD story. But we touched down in some of the more significant chapters of her story to see what they meant to Natalie and what they could mean to us as we continue to write our own stories. You will see the theme of Death and Rebirth appear and reappear throughout. Meet Natalie Natalie, her husband, Jon, and their son, Smith, live in Napa, CA, where Natalie and Jon own La Saison--at face value a world-class catering and food provisions company that they started in 2007. But when you look just a little deeper, you find that La Saison is really more like a vehicle through which Natalie and Jon bring their own brand of beauty into the world to enrich others and fulfill their unique purposes. In other words, it's about way more than the food. And a more recent addition to their menu is personal life guidance via the framework of Human Design, facilitated by Natalie. I'll provide contact info in the full shownotes for this episode for those of you who want to connect with Natalie and learn more about La Saison. BTW, La Saison means “the season”--to live in the present and allow life to unfold, instead of resisting it. And you'll see this orientation to life bubble up everywhere in my conversation with Natalie. Close Encounters with Mortality The entry point into our conversation was a discussion of two encounters Natalie had with Mortality, separated by 16 years. First, at just seven months old, Natalie stopped breathing and turned blue due to (of all things) an ear infection. Her dad, then in medical residency, scooped her up and ran across the street to the hospital, administering mouth-to-mouth the whole way. Then, at 17, Natalie was literally run over by a truck on a bike ride with her brother. Her “whole left side was broken,” and she had major head injuries. Remarkably, on this occasion, too, her dad was first on the scene to assess the situation and begin treatment. Connecting Dots in Hindsight Natalie finds meaning in those two encounters with Mortality through the lens of hindsight. “I was always one foot in and one foot out,” Natalie says--unsure on some deep level if she could handle “humanness.” But her encounter with Mortality at 17 came after a fundamentally transformative moment on an expedition in the snowy mountains of Colorado. On that expedition, in one magical moment of stillness, Natalie became aware that “this is all temporary.” When she returned home, she began to slip into her old pre-epiphany ways. The run-in with the truck shook her out of that, though, and two months without the ability to walk literally stopped her in her tracks and allowed the changes she experienced in Colorado to become more fully integrated within her. From that second near-death experience onward, Natalie has been all-in. Some Key Takeaways from Natalie's Story Each of us is a unique puzzle piece in the huge jigsaw puzzle of humanity. Self-discovery is perhaps the most important job each of us has because each of us has a specific spot to fill in the puzzle of humanity and a specific role to play. Commit to a lifelong practice of self-discovery. When you're on the path that you're meant to be on, magical things happen. We tend to get off-course when we are seeing the dangling carrot or shiny object of someone else's life that's not our own path. Our own path will always keep us feeling complete. To hear our inner voice--the voice that whispers the truth of our existence to us and sets us on our unique path--we have to “create time and space to be with ourselves.” Until we're in a position of really being able to take care of ourselves, we really are not ready to be in service to others. And more... There's so much meat on the bone of this episode. Tune in to the full episode for the full impact. What About You? Our unique stories and our unique purposes in the world are inseparable. Natalie's story is another demonstration of that truth. How well do you know your own story? I mean, really KNOW your story, like you know your best friend, your spouse, or your significant other? You may be able to identify the dots on your timeline, but some of those dots from the past are wreaking havoc in your present and blocking you from the future you could have because you don't yet know them intimately. And often, it's because they feel like enemies to be held at arm's length rather than friends to be embraced. Until we embrace them, they will remain enemies indeed--standing defiantly if not secretly between us and our full potential. Natalie's story landed differently for each one of you listening. That's awesome. It's part of the mystery of stories--that one story can affect so many people so differently and in just the way each person needed. And, I hope this episode has also affected each of you in one shared way: I hope Natalie's story has encouraged you to become even more intimately acquainted with your own Story so that, like Natalie, you can fulfill even more of your potential in the world--for your own enjoyment and the world's benefit. Natalie reminded me of this quote from Carl Jung in the days leading up to our recorded conversation, and it's a perfect bow to tie on this episode: "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." I Can Help We won't fully understand our story without the compassionate, curious support of other people. They see our Story and us within it in ways that we simply can't. I can be a compassionate, curious partner for you, helping you to become more intimately acquainted with your amazing story so it can inhibit you less and empower you even more moving forward. What are you capable of when you're more completely you?? That's very much worth finding out. Connect with me on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn, visit my website, or email me. Today I'm going to share with you how to leave anxiety behind and become more calm and centered. As you know, I've interviewed over 600 guests on Mindfulness Mode and it's not surprising that some patterns are emerging. One of those patterns has to do with anxiety and stress and what you can do to decrease that undesirable feeling that we're all familiar with. First, remember that stress is an emotion. I know you're likely saying, well that's obvious, but I want to remind you that our motions are there for a reason. Emotions exist to tell us that something is going on with our body or something needs to be adjusted. Human emotions are like the warning lights on your car's dashboard that let you know that something on your car needs attention. Maybe the fuel is low, the oil needs to be topped up, or your coolant is running low. There are warning lights on your dash to let you know of a bunch of different things that might need attention on your car. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify What Are Emotions For? Emotions serve a similar purpose. Loneliness means that you need more human interaction in your life. Anger could mean you need to pay attention and possibly make a change regarding something that's happening. There's no doubt about it, emotions can be a complex system of letting you know something needs adjusted. For one thing, in our society, a lot of us have learned to push our emotions away, pretend they aren't real, or sometimes we might not identify our emotions accurately. Maybe we think we're feeling stress, but it's actually boredom, or loneliness. Feel-Good Chemicals Our body's have an amazing system of secreting hormones and chemicals in response to various emotions. Most people realize that when we experience fight or flight, our body creates chemicals as a result. Although we don't always realize this fact, when we work up a sweat, there are some feel-good chemicals that help us feel better and can even make you feel like you're experiencing a high. You've probably heard of runner's high. The chemicals we're talking about are endorphins. The Games In order to experience this feeling, you have to make movement a way of life. You have to create a habit that includes some kind of activity. Brisk walking or running can do this for you, but of course there are lots of other choices too. The 2020 Olympics are on right now, and that's one of the reasons I wanted to talk about physical activity and sport. This year's Tokyo games are officially called the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020. Take some time to tune in to some events and allow yourself to enjoy and be inspired by the athletes. I usually find that once I tune in, I get so interested that I want to watch even more. Like I said, allow yourself to be inspired. After all, all these athletes started somewhere, and you can be sure there were times when they needed some inspiration and encouragement from others. We can all encourage each other, no matter what challenges we're up against at any given time. Beat Your Stress Let's talk about running. Running helps to improve your mood because it makes you feel better about yourself and gives you a sense of accomplishment. It also can be addicting, as once you get in a routine and start feeling the positive effects, you'll likely want to stick with it. Running is also inexpensive and convenient. You don't need a gym membership or expensive equipment. Running is a great exercise and a perfect way to beat stress and anxiety, and also get connected to nature. That's true of course, as long as you have somewhere to run when you can enjoy the trees, the birds, or whatever aspect of nature you enjoy. The reason running helps beat stress, is because the body releases endorphins which are often called “feel-good” chemicals. They can act as a pain reliever and happiness booster. Endorphins are primarily made in the part of the brain called the hypothalamus and also in the pituitary glands, though they may come from other parts of the body as well. These are some of the reasons that running is a great choice. A Routine To Diminish Stress You might have heard me say on the show before that I never did any running and never really wanted to in my life. Then, back in 2018, I started walking 45 minutes every day. Later I upped it to an hour. Then in December 2020, I decided to try running. I didn't push myself too hard, I just ran if I felt like it. I noticed that it felt good and that I could work up a better sweat once I started running. So that got me into the habit of running for an hour every day. The distance I run is about 6.6 kilometers which is 4 miles. I usually run down the country road where we live and then turn around and come back. Of course, there are options, so I can go in either direction from my house, and I can run further than the 6.6 kilometers if I want to. I've noticed that it really feels good to do this as part of my regular routine. Inspired By Dick Cycling is also popular, and is a terrific choice as a way to stay fit and experience the boost created by our body's chemicals. Cycling can help you build up your muscles and stay in shape. It's also fun, because you can ride with friends, a cycling club, or even go solo. This sport has been around for years, but it's just as popular today as it was in the past. I'm inspired by my uncle Dick, because a few years ago, when he retired, he took up cycling. He lost weight and became incredibly passionate about cycling. He also cycles in a velodrome. A velodrome is an arena for track cycling. It features steeply banked oval tracks, consisting of two 180-degree circular bends connected by two straight sections of track. The straights, as they're called, transition to the circular turn through a moderate easement curve. A Great American Swimmer Swimming is another terrific fitness activity that will help you stay fit, costs very little, and allows you to have fun in the water. If you have aches and pains, or are recovering from an injury, being in the water is a good way to exercise without worrying about harming your joints or muscles. Swimming will help you strengthen your body without stressing sore joints and muscles too much. If you have a competitive spirit, swimming can be great too, because you can swim laps and challenge yourself, or swim with others and build on your successes. I've always loved watching swimmers in the Olympics and I am always inspired by Michael Phelps. I've read some of his quotes like, “You can't put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.” What About You? Some of my guests have talked about how he inspired them to achieve greatness. I haven't read his book, but it's on my list of books to read. Check it out, it's called, No Limits: The Will to Succeed. He published his book in 2009 and I know it's been recommended as a book to read by some of my guests. He also published another book in 2016 called, Beneath the Surface: My Story. I'm sure those books would be inspiring and well worth reading. What's your favorite activity or sport that helps reduce stress in your life? Is there an athlete that inspired you to take up a sport that is now part of your life? I'd love to hear from you. What are you enjoying most about the Tokyo Olympics? Is there an athlete that you're fired up about and feel like the world should know more about their sport or what they're up to? Episode 56 of Conversations with Big Rich is part two of an exceptional interview with Bob Bower. If you haven’t met Bob, read what Ron Stobaugh had to say about him on the occasion of his 75th birthday. “Off Road Hall Of Fame. Racers Racer. Marketing Professional. Trainer of the Tire Pros. Most of my friends know these accolades as related to Bob. Many don't know he may or should be in the Tuna Fishing / Airplane Shuttling / Train Car Hopping / Corvette Club Hall Of Fame. Bob not only put up with me as a nor-cal squid that dreamed of Baja racing, he acted. A surprise trip to San Felipe (first time to a desert/Baja/off road race), picking up some kid named Robby Gordon, introductions to every person I had read about or watched on ABC Wide World of Sports, and the occasional kick in the ass when I veered too far off course. Taking me tuna fishing, even though I get motion sick, he hung in there with me - unforgettable experiences. I believe in Karma/Fate whatever you want to call it. I met Bob just before my dad passed away and six months after our son was born. This calm, tough, supportive, willing to let our 2 year old pull on his beard to the point of tears "lawn gnome" was there when we needed that type of figure in our lives. He deserves the Hall of Fame Induction, as well as all of the other known or unknown accolades. But Bob is most deserving of being called - a good human being.” No kinder words could be spoken.I’m going to forego the Show Notes for this second part of the Bob Bower interview, because if you listened to part one, you already know you want to listen to part two. One of the pieces Rich and Bob talk about in part two is “What About You?” It’s the best common sense piece for off-roaders out there. Are you healthy? How do you know? In this episode, my guest Penney Megginson helps us redefine health and wholeness--from the inside out. Introducing Penney Megginson I met Penney when she invited me to be on her podcast, Penney for Your Thoughts, a show about how your thoughts and mindset affect your health, happiness, and performance. Preliminary conversations and my own cyber-sleuthing quickly piqued my curiosity about Penney's story. It was clear that an unwelcome and unexpected encounter with Mortality had profoundly altered her relationship to health, happiness, and performance. That in fact it had profoundly altered her relationship to Life itself. And I wanted to know more. So, I was thrilled when Penney accepted my invitation to be a guest on this show. Her story gives us insight into how we can be more aware, proactive, and meaningfully involved in the lives of those we love today--before it's too late. Penney's story also shows just how powerfully our Stories influence the way we live out our purpose in the world. In fact, as I've said many times before, I believe that our Stories and our unique purpose in the world are inseparable. Penney is an American living in Switzerland with her husband and two kids. Early in career, she focused on exercise physiology, but then began adding other specialties to her toolbag to help others achieve their peak mind and body performance--including physiotherapy, pilates, yoga, integrative nutrition health coaching, EFT, and NLP. Her encounter with Mortality further focused and accelerated her development. And this intense evolutionary energy has made her an impressively well-rounded practitioner supporting whole-person health and wellness for her clients. Today, her Story, her innate gifting, and her accumulated expertise have converged to produce the Megginson Method, a mind-training system designed to help you overcome the core reasons behind your bad habits, cravings, and self-sabotaging behaviour. Two Chapters, One Story We built our conversation on the scaffolding of two statements I found in Penney’s bio online, each of which served as entry points into pivotal moments in her Story. The first statement was this: “That was the moment that I realised that it isn’t enough to just be content. It’s really about a balance of your inner state and physical well-being.” I asked Penney to share what was going on in her life that led to that moment. And Penney shared the story of her dad’s untimely death from a heart attack--doubly sad because he died just before the birth of Penney’s first child. Key bits of this part of the conversation include: Penney’s awareness that she “should” (her word) have done more to help her dad pursue better health. For a time it was a genuine regret. We chewed on what she might have done differently and what the rest of us can do today who realize that either we or someone we love could benefit from improving our health. This experience greatly expanded Penney’s definition of “health” and led her to begin working from the inside-out with clients. Penney riffed on the nature of “stuckness” and how the key is first to take full responsibility for it and for ourselves. (I didn’t plan for all of these recent episodes to hit on the stuckness idea this much, I swear! But I’m trusting that there’s a good purpose behind it.) We compared the American and European mindsets about “exercise”--acknowledging that Europeans embrace more of a “culture of movement” while Americans “work out.” Americans get in the car to sit in traffic on the way to the gym, where we’ll run on a treadmill. Europeans find that ironic and would rather walk into town or go for a bike ride. The lines are much blurrier for Europeans between exercise and the rest of life because movement is simply more a part of their lives. I found this part especially interesting and a good wake-up call for we Americans--to slow our roll, so to speak, and break down the rigid walls between “exercise” and the rest of life. Whatever you're wanting from the other person in a relationship, give it to them 10x, because whatever you're giving to them is going to bounce back to you. Often, we throw ourselves into exercise in an attempt to avoid being alone with our thoughts and reflecting on how we’re really doing. That discussion gobbled up most of the conversation. But we hit on the second statement from her bio briefly before landing the plane: “It was then that I finally understood why so many people never achieve their goals and simply settle.” Penney explained that in the midst of training hard for a big ski touring race, she tore her ACL one day while skiing. She was so discouraged, and was tempted to throw in the towel. But she rallied, rehabbed the knee, and came back to compete in the race a couple years later. Key bits of this part of the conversation include: Deeper empathy gained for her clients, who often come to her feeling desperate and somewhat hopeless that they’ll be able to make the changes that they want and need to make. She knows better now how big of an “ask” it can be of people who have a big health hill to climb. The power of choice in those moments of discouragement and defeat. The power of a compelling “why” to find the will to move forward. This part of her story further focused and fueled the way she lives out her purpose in the world today. Today, Penney focuses less on “fitness” and much more on whole health and wellness with her clients--creating plans specific to each person’s needs and objectives and built to be do-able and sustainable. What About You? The good news about other people's stories it that the same story can mean something different to each person that hears it. Maybe Penney's story helped you gain a little bit different perspective on your own health and wellness journey. Maybe it motivated you to get even more meaningfully involved in the life of someone you love before it's too late. Maybe, it even helped you see how your own Story is pointing you to your unique purpose in the world. Any of those takeaways would be be a huge win. No matter what insights you had, though, they'll never fulfill their potential to create transformation in your life if you don't apply Action to them. What can you do today to insure that you're not the guy or gal who has an inspirational moment...only to realize a few weeks from now that that's ALL it was? All it takes is the commitment to do ONE THING TODAY. Don't wait to take that first step. Call the person who came to mind. Contact Penney to start upgrading your own mindset to achieve a greater level of whole-person health and wellness. Instead of banging out a few more emails, close the laptop and go for a walk with your significant other. Whatever you do, don't do nothing. Your life and the lives of those you love are simply too valuable and too important. By doing just one thing today, you become a little bit more of the person you were made to be and get a little closer to living the life you were uniquely made to live. Remember, you ARE going to die. But you're not dead yet. So get after it! Let’s Connect If this episode helped you, I'd love to know. A TOTAL MESS ! WHAT ABOUT YOU !???
What does seven years of suffering reveal to a man about life and what matters most? This episode is a firsthand report from the front lines of intense suffering. My guest, Matt Wilks, invites us into some of the darkest moments--including his own dark night of the soul--the triumphant moments, and much more in between. Matt’s story is, of course, uniquely his. In a way, though, his story is also OUR story--the story of humans sharing the same "blue marble" of a planet for a brief span of time in the vast timeline of humanity--with all its painful lows and thrilling highs. And in Matt’s modern-day story, we find ancient wisdom for living our most fulfilling and meaningful lives as humans on planet earth. Introducing Matt Wilks Matt Wilks is a physical therapist by trade who today serves as VP and Chief Rehabilitation Officer for Sheltering Arms Institute --a cutting edge inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Richmond, VA. Matt and I met in college many moons ago, and we’ve reconnected in the past several years through a mutual friend. His wife, Amy Caroline, and their three kids live in the Richmond, VA area. And he is one high quality human being, in my book! Tune into the full episode to get to know Matt better; I think you’ll agree that he’s one high-quality human being. A Staggering Timeline of Suffering The Wilks’ family’s timeline of suffering began seven years ago, when Matt’s wife, Amy Caroline was diagnosed with melanoma. Then, his son, Hayes, was diagnosed with bone cancer and began a fierce fight for his life. Next, Matt began experiencing debilitating physical and neurological symptoms. His body was shutting down, and the possibility of ALS hung in the air. Then, almost unbelievably, Amy Caroline had another bout with melanoma, surgery to remove a benign thyroid tumor, and was diagnosed with breast cancer. Then, Matt’s dad (70) and one of Amy Caroline’s closest family members (54) received alzheimer’s diagnoses. Let that sink in. I still can’t quite wrap my brain around it. I do know, though, that this unfathomable degree of suffering brings (in my mind, at least) an immense amount of credibility to all of the lessons for living that Matt shares in this episode. Tune in to the full episode to hear Matt fill in the finer brush strokes that bring that timeline to life in human terms. Connecting Some Dots of Love and Mercy In the course of recounting Hayes’ cancer battle--which Matt identifies as the central struggle for his family during the past seven years--Matt reminded me that he, Amy Caroline, and Hayes crossed paths with my sister and brother-in-law in the very earliest days of Hayes’ cancer battle and in the midst of my brother-in-law’s own cancer battle. Holly and Brian visited with Matt, Amy Caroline, and Hayes in NYC closely following one of Brian’s major cancer-removal and orthopedic reconstructive surgeries. The comfort and encouragement that Holly and Brian shared were so deeply meaningful for Matt and his family in that moment and helped them know that they weren’t alone. Matt shares that this experience of receiving comfort from others who were suffering was repeated many times over in the course of Hayes’ cancer battle. My brother-in-law’s cancer battle had a HUGE impact on my life, too. In fact, this podcast is a direct result of how his struggle shaped me. Tune in to episode 001, You’re Dying: How to Make the Most of It for the rest of that story. There’s Love Beneath the Waves One of the most moving parts of this episode for me is Matt’s description of one of the darkest moments he experienced during Hayes’ cancer battle. He calls the experience his own “dark night of the soul”--lying in bed in the middle of the night, alone with his fears that Hayes’ cancer had come back. And in those hours, Matt searched for something--anything--that was solid and he could cling onto. He found nothing, and eventually all he could do was lie there and breathe--and “that, only barely,” he recounts. Then, he began to be aware of a presence with him, steady and unwavering, and enabling him to keep drawing breath. He found “Love beneath the waves.” The discovery of this “Love beneath the waves” has given Matt the ability to live and love with greater guts, gusto, and abandon than ever before--no matter how choppy and storm-tossed the seas are on the surface. The Beauty of Simple Moments In the midst of all the suffering, Matt has developed the habit of lying in his hammock in a certain spot in his yard, with a good book and a favorite cocktail as his companions, the breeze on his face, and the dappled sunlight filtering through the tree above him. The suffering, Matt says, has helped him to truly relish life’s good things, life’s sweet moments. In a way, even as the suffering has deepened Matt’s spiritual experience of life, it has also paradoxically amplified his appreciation for the material world. Ancient Wisdom This juxtaposition of the spiritual and the material in his own experience has made the book of Ecclesiastes one of Matt’s favorite sources for wisdom. He recognizes in its ancient lines the lessons he’s learned in his modern-day story of suffering. Other Takeaways from Matt’s Story Who am I, and whose am I? For Matt, the answers to these questions determine if we have a “rich” life or a “poor” life much more than our own interpretation of “rich” and “poor.” Receive each moment as it comes to you and for what it is--no less and no more. Don’t cling to the moments or demand that good moments last forever. Our individual stories are hid within a much larger and longer story. Our suffering connects us with the billions of humans that have suffered before us. These are some of the nuggets of ancient wisdom that bubble up for me from this modern-day tale. Tune in to the full episode to see what bubbles up for you. All is Well I’m glad to report that Amy Caroline, Matt, and Hayes are all doing much better these days. Amy Caroline’s breast cancer treatment has gone well. Matt’s symptoms have dramatically improved. And Hayes has almost reached the 5-year mark since beginning treatment, a major milestone related to his longer-term outlook. What About You? If you’re above ground and breathing, you’ve already suffered in one way or another. Maybe you’re suffering right now. You are not alone. If you’re not suffering in a particular way right now, let me be the bearer of difficult news: Suffering will come again in one form or another, sooner or later. And then there’s Death--and as Coroner Rob Ryg reminded us in episode 018, it never comes when we’re expecting it. Life isn’t all suffering and death, but as Matt mentioned in this episode, our Western “developed” cultures don’t equip us to suffer or related to Death very well. Which is one reason why here on Andrew Petty is Dying, we intentionally embrace our Mortality to find motivation to become the people we were made to be and live the lives we were made to live. If you’re suffering now, how can Matt’s story help you persevere in your suffering and find the love beneath the waves? If you’re not suffering right now, how can Matt’s story motivate you to live with more guts, gusto, and abandon now? Let’s add a little more heat: If you knew with 100% certainty that you would die 5 years from today, what would you start doing differently today? Whatever it is, DO. THAT. THING. IN ROMANS 15:5 PAUL WRITES THAT THE GOD OF PATIENCE AND COMFORT SHOULD GRANT US TO BE LIKE MINDED, THAT MY PRAYER FOR ME, WHAT ABOUT YOU?
For the women in midlife who listen to this podcast and I’ve worked with for more than three and a half decades fitness is sometimes illusive. But success leaves signs. Four times in my life when I’ve made significant changes in my fitness level it was by doing LESS, not more. In My Late Teens Beginning exercise…. Back in 1982. From walking a half mile to a mile to a mile and an half… to jogging parts … And if I added something I added water jogging or a bit of lap swimming while at the pool where I was lifeguarding. In My 20s Then just before grad school I was injured riding a horse. I spent the summer again back to fundamentals. Walking around the block if I made it that far. Swimming. Starting to kick when that didn’t hurt as much. It was very light and very low. And by the end of summer I again… had made progress not slid back. My Late 40s Then at 49 I quit every stable, secure paycheck to take a risk and build a business from scratch. I barely let myself away from the keyboard. I was sitting and coaching fitness professionals on how to sell their services, and building online courses, and focusing on working with women in midlife myself when I accidentally discovered the After 50 Fitness Formula for Women – that became the signature course from You Still Got It, Girl! the book. I spent 20 minutes at a time pulling myself away from the computer to walk the dog, do intervals, or weights or a short yoga stretch. Some days I would do two or three of those at different times of day. But what I never did… was endurance training. I didn’t do any 45 or 60-minute runs that had been my habit for decades. I wasn’t teaching hour-long classes any more and then often jumping on a piece of cardio equipment afterwards. Fitness for Women Is Easier Than We Make It I got very efficient and focused knowing it’s all I was going to do. Walking the dog was sometimes brisk and sometimes… smelling the fire hydrants. Twenty minutes mid day was literally doing one move a minute playing music on my TV – just dancing. In My 50s Then again just recently in the beginning of 2020 I cut back… and have kept that limited time of exercise because of COVID19 and the need for focus on Immune-supportive exercise not MORE, but LESS, and more often. I’ve dug into and shared with you in many places …. Masterclasses Live Facebooks Youtube channel Flipping 50 Podcasts Flipping 50 Blogs The science of how and what kind of exercise supports your strong immune response – and what doesn’t. And here’s this. I also have shared the integrative nature of your endocrine or hormone system with your immune response. The Less Exercise More Results Evidence Every time I’ve reduced my exercise or done a low intense or low volume of exercise I’ve made the fastest and most rapid progress in my fitness. It happened when I was 18, when I was 25, when I was 49 and now when I’m 56 I’m experiencing it all over again. This, girlfriends is not a coincidence. Though if we look at just me… I’m a study of 1… and that is truly not a good thing to build your fitness plan on. However, I’ve done the research. I continue to read 3-5 new studies every week – or a dozen a month. The science is STILL telling me the same thing as when I was shocked at 49 to look stronger, leaner, and look healthier after 14 months of less exercise. What About You? I want you to take a few moments and look back on your life and your exercise habits. Let go for a minute of that feeling behind or overwhelmed that you may have let yourself get out of shape and there’s so much to do. Let go of that thought that your hormones suddenly changed the rules. Because yes, yes they may have. However, it may be more true that what you were doing wasn’t enough or was too much and or not of the right kind even when you weren’t seeing that it wasn’t working. Hormones Change A dramatic change in hormones when you’re at that latter part of perimenopause, or menopause hits, continuing into post menopause - can make you feel as if you suddenly gained that 10 pounds. Yet the habits were there all along and you were getting by with them. You can’t self-select whether you love Pilates, or Yoga, or Barre or instead intervals or strength training or long distance running. You’ve got muscles, bones, and a needs for strength, endurance, bone density, mobility that no one of them can give you. Can you emphasis one you love more than others? Certainly. Can you ignore it and be truly “healthy” in every way that will lead to longevity? Absolutely not. If you forfeit your fitness at 80 and 90 for your skinny jeans now, you don’t get these years back. You can make strength gains in your 80s but not as easily. The Signs of Success So I encourage you to: Include it all Do it in short, but regular and frequent sessions Limit any excessive exercise of the same intensity or mode Start. Just start. If you are just “starting” or restarting and you truly need support beginning. I’ll link to a beginner’s program that is exercise- only.

The Grammy Song of the Year nominee and ASCAP Song of the Year winner joins us to chat about her wide-ranging career and multi-genre songwriting success. About Wendy Waldman From recording artist to musician to backing vocalist to record producer to multi-platinum songwriter for other performers, Wendy Waldman has a diverse music industry resume. Though her father was a film and television composer who wrote the Perry Mason theme and worked on classics such as The Twilight Zone and Star Trek, Wendy was drawn to the blues and folk music at a young age. Her first serious group was Bryndle, featuring Karla Bonoff, Kenny Edwards, and Andrew Gold. Though they split up before their first album was released, all four would be instrumental in Linda Ronstadt’s success and would re-form in later years to record three albums that are now regarded as modern-day classics. Wendy’s solo career began when she signed with Warner Bros. Records and released her first album, which Rolling Stone magazine called the “singer-songwriter debut of the year.” A series of critically-acclaimed releases followed before Wendy relocated from Los Angeles to Nashville, where she found commercial success with Crystal Gayle’s #1 single “Baby, What About You,” The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s chart-toppers “Fishin’ in the Dark” and “Home Again in My Heart,” as well as Top 10 singles for Lorrie Morgan, The Forester Sisters, and Nicolette Larson with Steve Wariner. Always difficult to pigeonhole, Waldman’s achievements on the country charts were rivaled by her success in the pop world, where she scored with Don Johnson’s Top 5 single “Heartbeat” and Vanessa Williams’s “Save the Best for Last.” which reached #1 on the pop, R&B, and adult contemporary charts, earned Wendy a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year, and was named ASCAP Song of the Year. Wendy’s songs have additionally been covered by Patti Austin, Kenny Rogers, Reba McEntire, Cher, Alison Krauss, Randy Travis, Percy Sledge, Kathy Mattea, Aaron Neville, Rita Coolidge, CeCe Winans, Bette Midler, Johnny Mathis, Judy Collins, Restless Heart, Barbara Mandrell, Tanya Tucker, Patty Loveless, and many others.

But, he has to work long hours, it's physically demanding, and not what he really wants to do. Jeff wants to get an master's degree and help people make changes in their lives. He goes to school. Along the way to his bachelor's degree all he see is the struggle and how much more time it will take. Jeff gets really frustrated and feels like quitting just about every day. He has forgotten to focus on his real reasons why the new career is important to him. All he see is the work and struggles it will take to achieve. Jeff is miserable the whole way to his advanced degree and even carries some of that misery to his new job after finishing school. Now let me tell you about Stella. She is working in customer service right now. But, she wants to become an account. She knows she could make a lot better money as a CPA and could create a better life for herself and her family. She starts school. Throughout that whole time in school she always remembers why she started on this path. She reminds herself of the payoff, what she is working toward, and all the benefits of the hard work she is putting in. Stella knows her reasons why. They are big and important to her. No matter how big the required hard work gets – her reasons why she will succeed are bigger. Will It Make A Difference? Who do you think will find it easier to take action and make progress? Which one will enjoy the journey (and even the work) more? Do you think one is more likely to continue to set big goals? Your Reasons WHY Keep the reasons why you really want to achieve your goal in the front of your mind. Whatever your reasons, remember them, remind yourself of them, feel them. Every step you take is for that reason why. Every single inch of progress you make is for that reason why. When you focus on your BIG WHY, the how becomes a little easier. You are capable of so much. You can do great things when your effort is focused and your give it your absolute best. Stop Excuses The problem is that it is too easy to give excuses on why we don't need to give it our best. A helpful mindset can help reduces those excuses or at least stop you from believing them. When you have a big, important, powerful reason why you want to improve your health, get out of debt, get a better job, reduce stress, enjoy life more, or achieve any goal – When the WHY is big enough you can overcome any HOW and even those excuses too. I don't feel like studying isn't a valid excuse when the reason why your getting an advanced degree is to better provide for your family. I'm tired and don't want to do my stress reducing mindfulness exercise isn't much of an excuse when your WHY is huge. If you really feel and embrace your reason why to reduce stress is to be a better parent with more energy and focus, then doing the exercises is little bit easier. What About You? It's a philosophical one with Lindsay this week! Quick note on the topic of audio quality: In this week's episode, you'll hear Lindsay coming through at a slightly lower quality than usual. Our apologies! We'll be back to our usual high standards in the next episode. Here are our two big topics. Donald Trump Is A Tweeter If you're au courant with the news these days, you may have noticed that Donald Trump is a prolific user of Twitter. But what do his tweets reveal about him? Language analysis platform Text Inspector has produced a report on the POTUS's twitter archive, and in this episode Lindsay and I examined what it all means. Plus: What do Donald Trump and Regina George have in common? http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8mvorpsxg1qffo8s.gif Does Culture Stop Us from Learning Languages? Learning German makes you efficient. Spanish is sexy. Arabic speakers talk about terrorism. Russian is a macho language. Would you say you're influenced by statements like this? In this episode, we discuss language attitudes and how they have affected our own stories in language learning. The discussion was powerful - starting with the question "Does culture / perception stop you from learning a language?", we talked about travel, terrorism, stereotypes and machine guns. To round it off, we chatted about the good old Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. Always one to draw us linguists out to the campfire. What About You? Do you think that ideas and perceptions have ever stopped you...or encouraged you in language learning? When the Prophet Nathan went to King David to Rebuke him, David didn't even realize what was going on till the end of the Parable. God has a way of using Parables to show us a lesson. Parables are basically modern stories in modern times to make us say Uh ha! Got it. That's the same thing Nathan did to our beloved King David. He told him one about someone who took something that belonged to some else and David got furious! So after Nathan revealed the truth to the King, then came repentance. Wow, that's a story, but it's not ending there. Let's look at an onion. An onion has many layers. But in order for us to get to the part of the onion that we like, well that you like, I don't like onions..lol..we have to peel the skin off, then peel a little more till we get to the part that we like. Well that's what happened to King David, and that's what God does to us. He allows things to happen to us until there comes a point where we have to start peeling layers of sin off of us till we get to the real us. Join me Hezekiah L. Montgomery host of The Man In The Mirror and Co-Host Nichelle Johnson as we discuss sin, the layer that build and how God uses situations to start peeling those layers off to get to the real you, me and all those He loves. Are you ready to be peeled?
