I'm Just a Lucky So and So. ©️ 2023 Stony Plain Records Maria Muldaur - vocals 9 Evan Price - violin Taj Mahal - vocals, harmonica Danny Caron - guitar Ruth Davies - bass Leon Joyce Jr. - drums Carla Holbrook, Leesa Humphrey, Charlotte McKinnon, Sandy Cressman, Sandy Griffith & Leah Tysse - background vocals Kristen Strom - flute 2 John Simon - piano #vocaljazz #blues #swing --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message

She's a badass blues woman with the best laugh in this or any other business. Sass Jordan joins us to talk about female rockers (there aren't that many), great musicians, and how to spot true talent. Not giving a damn about anything except love, family and creativity, and maybe food and drink. What it's like to be in Dad territory, as in “My dad thinks you're hot”. Warning: lots of hooting and hollering, giggling and cackling. Born in England, raised in Montreal, Sarah Jordan became Sass because she's full of it. Named Most Promising Vocalist by the Junos in 1989, Sass has kept that promise. Billboard listed her as the Top Female Rock Artist of the year in 1992, the year she released “Racine”, her landmark album that made everyone a believer. An actress on stage and screen, Sass also sat as a judge on all six seasons of Canadian Idol. Her latest album, Bitches Blues, featuring the song Still Alive and Well is available on Stony Plain Records. We love writing and would love for you to read what we write. Sass Jordan hit pay dirt in the early 90's with rock radio hit albums like Racine and Rats, and songs like “Make You a Believer” and “You Don't Have to Remind Me.” But, she also garnered a Juno award in 1989, and even portrayed Janis Joplin in an off-Broadway musical. While Covid was raging, Sass issued her first all-blues album called Rebel Moon Blues to critical acclaim. Now, she's put together another collection, some originals, some covers, called Bitches Blues from Stony Plain Records. We chat with Sass about playing live in a post-Covid world - how both musicians and the audience need to relearn how to have fun. Plus, how she dug back to her childhood to pick some of the songs on her new record.

On the podcast this week, Mike's hears the stories and lessons of Geoff Kulawick's life in the music industry. He's the founder and president of Linus Entertainment, which now has exclusive control of a catalogue of over 2,000 albums, with the overwhelming majority by Canadian artists. Linus is also the parent company to Spring Hill Music, Stony Plain Records, and True North Records, which makes it one of the powerful players in roots music in Canada, representing artists like Buffy Sainte-Marie, Matt Andersen, Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Fred Penner, Craig Cardiff, and so many more. Here, Geoff recounts his entry into the music business, why he opted to launch his own label just as Napster was decimating the industry, his philosophy on doing business and working with artists, and a whole lot more. Then, for the second interview today, Mike happens to chat with someone from the Stony Plain Records roster. That is, Mike McDonald of alt-country pioneers Jr. Gone Wild. He and his old friends are back with the first album of new material from Jr. Gone Wild in 25 years. McDonald chats about how the industry has changed, how the band naturally found its then-unique sound that combines folk, punk, and country; growing up as friends and artists; and more.

Sue Foley grew up in Ottawa, Ontario surrounded by music and a family of guitar players. After graduating high school, Sue headed West to Vancouver where she spent a couple of years on the coast before transplanting down to Austin, Texas upon the insistence of the legendary Clifford Antone. Since her 1992 debut “Young Girl Blues” on the Antone's label, Sue has recorded for Shanachie, Ruf, Blind Pig, and Stony Plain Records. Sue Foley has been riding a larger wave of success since her 2018 album, The Ice Queen. She won “Best Traditional Female (Koko Taylor Award) at the 2020 Blues Music Awards in Memphis, was nominated for a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy), and she took home the award for Best Guitar Player at the Toronto Maple Blues Awards. The Ice Queen reached #4 on the Billboard Current Blues chart, #1 on RootsMusic Report's Top 50 Canada album chart and was in the Living Blues radio chart for four consecutive months, peaking at #2.Including that win for Best Blues Album in 2001 for Love Comin' Down, Sue is a 4 time Juno Nominee . Foley also holds the record for the most Maple Blues Awards with 18 wins to her credit. Sue's new record, Pinky's Blues was released on October 22. It serves as a raw, electric guitar driven romp through the backroads of Texas, with Foley's signature pink paisley Fender Telecaster, “Pinky” at the wheel. Pinky's Blues is a collection of 12 songs, both original and some of Sue's favourite covers, that demonstrate not only that Sue is one of the world's greatest Blues guitarists, but that the sheer joy of playing can be felt through the recording in an emotional thrill for the listener. A vinyl version of the album in hot pink provides a dream item for fans, audiophiles and collectors. For more on Sue Foley visit: www.suefoley.com

She’s had a Top Ten hit on the Pop charts, and she’s recorded several albums devoted to jug band, folk and pre-war blues - you can say that Maria Muldaur has had a unique musical journey. That Billboard hit, “Midnight at the Oasis,” garnered her a Grammy nomination and set her on a path as a solo artist. She’s enjoyed a two-decade partnership with the Canadian label, Stony Plain Records, where she’s been able to delve deep into various strains of American roots music - every time coming up with something that draws on the past yet still sounds fresh. Her 43rd album is called Let’s Get Happy Together, and it’s a collaboration with Tuba Skinny, a New Orleans street band that’s dedicated to classic music of the early 20th century. We talk to Muldaur about the crazy story of hooking up with Tuba Skinny, plus, the fun task of finding songs from 100 years ago to do on this album. She also talks about what made her gravitate to roots music in the first place.

Один из самых популярных гитаристов Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters презентовали альбом «Rise Up», который записали на Stony Plain Records. 2.Sugar Ray & The Bluetones Featuring Little Charlie Baty - «Too Far From The Bar». 3.Легенды американского блюза Elvin Bishop & Charlie Musselwhite записали первый совместный альбом «100 Years Of Blues», который вышел на знаменитом Чикагском лейбле Alligator Records. Kim Wilson «Take me Back! Песню «Take me Back!» 6.Напоследок у нас австралийский релиз от Josh Teskey & Ash Grunwald - «Push the Blues Away».

Dan started playing guitar at the age of seven, beginning with a lap steel and by the time he was ten he was playing the acoustic and wrote his first song for his mom; Someone Like You. His Dad integrated him into the band he was playing bass for and by the time he was 13, Dan was the bass player and harmony singer for a local weekend band. His credits include over 200 albums as a singer/song writer, producer and bassist. Dan was band leader for the late Colleen Peterson for several years. He has toured with George Fox, Terry Sheridan, Colleen Peterson and South Mountain. He has guested as singer/bassist for many gospel shows both live and on television. Dan has shared the stage on shows with Emmy-Lou Harris, Pirates of the Mississippi, Waylon Jennings, Toby Keith, Marty Stuart and Martina McBride to name a few. Dan had great success releasing 5 singles to radio before being asked to audition for award winning band “South Mountain”. Dan became their lead singer/bassist and spokes-person in Canada, signed to Stony Plain Records, distributed world-wide by Warner Brothers. The band toured Canada and Europe extensively and were in high demand. They had a successful album “Where There’s A Will” offering four chart successes and several Canadian Country Music Association nominations.
Allen Bell New Music and interviews w_ Noah ZacharinNoah Zacharin is a widely acclaimed guitar master, multi-genre songwriter, and dynamic performer. He was given his first guitar at age 9, wrote his first song at 13, and began performing at 14. In December 2015, Zacharin became a full-time recording and touring musician, and is more thrilled than ever to be doing what he has always done. Born in Montreal, Zacharin splits his time between Toronto, the road, and an off-grid cabin on the Canadian Shield. He has been called "a stunning guitarist...no stylistic boundaries" (Holger Peterson, CBC, Stony Plain Records), "a wonderful songwriter and performer" (Paul Mills, Borealis Records), "a poet, a songwriter, a singer we have been waiting for" (the late Penny Lang), "a great guitarist/ singer/ songwriter...a wonderfully musical player" (Randy Finney, Founder TFGA), "in a league of his own" (Brian Gladstone, Founder and AD Winterfolk Festival), "one of the best songwriters this country has produced" (the late great Rick Fielding, recording artist, radio host), and "deserving to be mentioned in the same breath with names such as James Taylor and David Wilcox" (Minor 7th).Zacharin's recordings have all garnered popular and critical praise: Strange Rider(2016) made a number of ‘Best-Of’ lists for 2016, and his 8th, A Startle of Wings, has just been released. In the works is a DVD re-release of fan-favorite “Waiting on Your Love” which will include ASL video and a previously unreleased tune.As a soloist he has opened shows for Odetta, David Lindley, Dave Van Ronk, Jesse Winchester, Alex de Grassi, and Fairport Convention, and performed internationally in 100's of venues from club to concert hall. As a producer and instrumentalist he has performed with some of Canada's finest and appears on some 60 recordings by artists from across North America. As a writer, his songs have been recorded by popular performer and radio host Laura Fernandez (who translated the song into Spanish), Rolling Stone (India) Cover Artist Rehan Dalal, and double-slide master, the late Brian Cober. He has officially showcased at BC Contact (2008), FARM (October 2016), and SERFA (May 2017).Noah Zacharin is also an award-winning poet (with "a remarkable ability to articulate efficient, powerfully condensed ideas": What 18/19) and translator, having won McGill’s Chester-Macnaghten poetry prize and Matrix Magazine’s translation prize. He has published hundreds of poems, translations, and reviews, in periodicals and anthologies worldwide, and is currently at work on his first full-length manuscript of poems. In his spare time Zacharin reads, cycles, walks, and practices tai chi and kung fu. He also practices guitar.
My guest this week is the incomparable telecaster-slinger and all around guitar maniac, Amos Garrett. Detroit native Garrett began working as a professional guitarist north of the border in Toronto. There he played with the Dirty Shames, a folk jug band, before moving on to the country-rock-oriented Great Speckled Bird at the invitation of Ian and Sylvia. Perhaps best known for his inspired and jaw-dropping work on Maria Muldaur's "Midnight at the Oasis", Amos went on to play on many classic albums for Jesse Winchester, Anne Murray, Stevie Wonder, Emmylou Harris, and Paul Butterfield. His studio work led him to California, and eventually to Alberta, Canada where he has resided for many years. Garrett also put out his own recordings, more than half a dozen, on Stony Plain Records. In 1989, his album The Return of the Formerly Brothers, garnered a Juno Award. Enjoy my conversation with Amos Garrett, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!
Holger Petersen is a Canadian broadcaster whose weekly Saturday Night Blues on CBC Radio has been a fixture for 25 years and is also broadcast on Sirius XM. His CKUA network show, Natch'l Blues, has been aired every week for more than forty years. Petersen also runs Stony Plain Records and was a founder of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. He is a member of the Order of Canada and the author of the books Talking Music and Talking Music 2 (Insomniac Press). The Crazy Chester Radio Hour is created and hosted by record producer Andreas Werner. The theme song is performed by Jimmy Hall & Funky Chester and written by Andreas Werner (Crazy Chester Music, BMI). Used with permission.
Holger Peterson started Stony Plain Records 40 years ago at his kitchen table with partner Alvin Jahns. It’s grown into one of the most respected independent labels in history, balancing a roster of legendary artists like Maria Muldaur, Ian Tyson and Long John Baldry with up and coming acts.To celebrate, they’ve released 40 Years of Stony Plain, a 3-disc set highlighting artists on the label, plus some rare and unreleased tracks. We also talk about putting together this great collection, and the resurgence of physical music.
We chat with Stony Plain head Holger Peterson about a new Jeff Healey compilation – The Best of the Stony Plain Years. Healey was an amazingly talented musician, best known for his 1989 top five hit “Angel Eyes.” He lost his sight at an early age, picked up the guitar at three, and developed an unique style of playing the instrument on his lap.The Jeff Healey Band showcased his talents as a searing blues-rock guitarist, releasing a series of albums in the late Eighties and early Nineties. But, as the decade wore on, Jeff became increasingly weary of the trappings of the genre. Amazingly, he switched gears, teaching himself how to play trumpet and immersing himself in traditional jazz of the Twenties & Thirties. Thus began a new chapter in his musical career – he issued a series of classic jazz & blues albums in the 2000’s up until his untimely passing in 2008.Peterson, who was a longtime friend of Healey’s discusses this new compilation, Healey’s deep love for classic jazz and blues, and other releases he has coming up for Stony Plain.
A sample of samplers from Canada's venerable Stony Plain Records. Plus a tribute to the late Penny Lang. Jim Burnett guest hosts.
Broadcasting legend and iconic label-head, Holger Petersen is my guest this week. For anyone living in Canada over the last 40+ years, Holger has been the voice coming at you on Saturday nights on CBC Radio, bringing you great blues music on Saturday Night Blues, or even longer in Alberta on CKUA Radio. His label, Stony Plain Records, is also one of the oldest and most established roots music labels in North America. Holger has a long history with music, playing drums in bands growing up in Edmonton, promoting shows for the likes of Reverend Gary Davis and Mississippi John Hurt, and releasing a steady stream of music to the world by artists such as Jeff Healey, Long John Baldry, Duke Robillard, Ian Tyson, Corb Lund, and so many more. Holger and I had a chance to talk about that history, hanging with Jimmy Witherspoon and Jay McShann, being a fly on the wall for a Herbie Hancock record, traveling with Long John Baldry, and the path his life has taken to be one of Canada's great purveyors of amazing music. Thanks for listening!
He started the record label from his kitchen table. That was 35 years ago.For 35 years Holger Petersen has run Stony Plain Records, an independent label out of Canada specializing in roots music. Among the artists that have released music through the company are Maria Muldaur, Jeff Healey, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, and Asleep at the Wheel. To celebrate, they’ve just released 35 Years of Stony Plain, a two-CD/one DVD collection featuring all those listed above, plus many more. Icon Fetch talks to Stony Plain’s president about starting the label in his kitchen and some of the fabulous artists on the collection, including several rare performances by blues legend Robert Nighthawk.
