Three-time Oscar nominee, four-time Tony nominee, and four-time Emmy Award winner Laura Linney is known for her technical prowess and innate humanity in film, theater, and television—three mediums she approaches distinctly when building characters. Growing up the daughter of a playwright and realizing early just how much there is to learn about acting, Laura studied theater history before joining the Juilliard School and focusing on her mission to “make some tiny contribution to something that had been going on for centuries before me.” Star of “Tales of the City,” “You Can Count On Me,” “Wild Iris,” “Kinsey,” “Frasier,” “John Adams,” “The Savages,” “The Big C,” and 12 Broadway shows including this year’s solo show “My Name Is Lucy Barton,” Laura has for three seasons played the deceptively dangerous Wendy Byrde on Netflix’s crime drama “Ozark” opposite Jason Bateman. Kenneth Lonergan doesn't think there's a real difference between comedy and drama, at least not in the way he writes and directs. The playwright-screenwriter-director talks with Marc about the lie of sentimentality, how ideas collapse when he's writing and new ideas emerge, and why he hopes to get to 95% satisfaction with his work (he's gotten to about 90% so far). That work includes Manchester By The Sea, Margaret, You Can Count On Me, and plays like The Waverly Gallery, which is now on Broadway. This episode is sponsored by Loop Jewelry, Screen Dive from 20th Century Fox, YouTube Music, and Stamps.com. Their sound bridges a curious gap between Van Morrison, Joel Plaskett, and outsider artists like Daniel Johnston. You Can Count On Me, the band’s third album since 2008, is weighted with songs of forgiveness, acceptance, and understanding, which shouldn’t come as any surprise given that the brothers volunteer regularly to perform at a local longterm care home. Their songwriting and delivery is honest, blunt, and heartwarming – descriptors that can easily be misread as trivial, but they ring so true in the context of this album. They capture a magic that just can’t be faked. Even mastering legend John Golden (The Replacements, Sonic Youth, Black Flag) took the time to write them and let them know what a pleasure he had working on the record. They have shared the stage with songwriters as diverse as John K. Samson (of The Weakerthans), Gordon Lightfoot, and Tom Wilson. They were invited to perform this summer at the Regina Folk Festival, and Gateway Festival, and are currently gearing up for a national tour in fall 2015 in support of You Can Count O

Don't be fooled by the TERRIBLE promotional posters for this film, it isn't a romantic backpacker comedy one of the posters would imply or a grimacing laughter fest either - it is a complex and carefully observed film about family and grief. Both Linney and Ruffle are terrific in what were both breakthrough performances then, supported by a young Rory Culkin and the greatest performance by a moth in the history of cinema (Best Supporting Moth is yours little guy!). This week we talk with Composer Lesley Barber who recently worked on Director Kenneth Lonergan's new film, Manchester by the Sea starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams. Barber previously worked with Lonergan on his acclaimed debut feature, “You Can Count On Me,” and she has provided music for films such as “Mansfield Park,” “Hysterical Blindness,” “A Price Above Rubies,” and “When Night Is Falling.” For ‘Manchester,’ Barber utilized harmonized vocal performances and atmospheric orchestral work to create a memorable score that makes an excellent companion to the classical pieces curated by the award-winning music supervisor Linda Cohen. After the death of his older brother Joe, Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked that Joe has made him sole guardian of his teenage nephew Patrick. Taking leave of his job as a janitor in Boston, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea, the fishing village where his working-class family has lived for generations. Lisa Cohen, interested in her teacher. RC-2013-104: Margaret (Extended Cut) (2011) Your browser does not support this audioIt took a while, but Kenneth Lonergan's follow up to You Can Count On Me finally got seen by audiences in 2011. During the marathon commentary (for, Lonergan's extended cut stretches past the three-hour mark), I go into the legal wrangling that delayed the release of Margaret. I comment on the theatrical cut's benefit's and shortcomings before declaring that Lonergan's cut—the film he turned in—is a masterpiece. (Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker oversaw the editorial paring-down process that produced the theatrical cut, and though Lonergan ultimately approved, I will argue in this episode, he knew his cut was better.) After pointing out some of the differences between the cuts—which include everything from sound design to score to whole storylines that were excised—I settle into gush mode and praise the film's fresh approach to familiar themes. I spend the rest of the episode (when I'm not sticking up for Anna Paquin) telling the world why Jeannie Berlin's performance may be the most under-appreciated supporting turn in the history of moving pictures. Lonergan himself, playing Lisa Cohen's distant dad, is chubbier than you probably imagined he'd be, and Matt Damon looks younger than you thought he'd look. This movie is weird like that. Grab your popcorn and a diet cola, and settle in—this three-hour urban opera is a doosie... And don't call me honey, okay?Listen to the mp3. Or turn your life into an iTunes opera—Bravi!
