Devannon Hubert is the host of Sex, Drugs, and Jesus, a podcast that highlights taboo concepts and the people that enjoy them. He joined me on Ramble by the River to discuss his life as a gay man, his experience of being excommunicated from his church, his time in the military, his rise to prominence in the black-market drug trade; his HIV diagnosis; and his eventual arrest by SWAT team. We covered a lot of ground over two hours and kept coming back to ideas about how to practice acceptance and tolerance in a world that sometimes feels so hostile and unforgiving that selfless love feels impossible. We covered hypnosis, drug abuse, religion, romance, social manipulation, oppression, hate, love, and podcasting. Devannon brings his irreverent and hilarious sense of humor to these heavy topics and the result is something magical. I really like this episode. I think it shows how two people can appear to be quite different on the surface, but deep down we all share so much in common. I had a great time making this thing and I hope you enjoy listening to it. If you want to support the show... Go to the all new Ramble by the River Patreon. Air Force Veteran Josh Seefried grew up knowing he wanted to serve in the Air Force. It started when his parents sent him to Space Camp in fifth grade, offering him the experience of a lifetime. The next summer, he participated in Aviation Challenge, getting the chance to fly and engage in aerial combat through a simulator. In seventh grade, he petitioned his congressman to get him into a shadow cadet program at the U.S. Air Force Academy, a program reserved only for high school students. After high school, the Air Force Academy officially admitted Seefried as a student and he could not be happier. Yet, his enchantment with the Air Force – and the military more generally – soon turned into trauma. Seefried was gay and was blackmailed and exposed while serving under Don't Ask Don't Tell.In this episode of Borne the Battle, Seefried shares his life's story, from being blackmailed and outed as gay to becoming one of the nation's foremost advocates for LGBT active-duty service members. He discusses: When one of his academy teachers found out he was gay and blackmailed him for favors Being outed as gay How his superiors treated him when investigating his blackmail case Using social media to stake out a space for LGBT members of the military to communicate How he helped fellow service members come out after Don't Ask Don't Tell was repealed An early part of Seefried's strategy to change the military's culture for its LGBT members included the novel use of social media. At a time when social media platforms like Facebook were still new, Seefried formed online groups that connected thousands of LGBT service members.Seefried regularly appeared on major broadcasting networks under the pseudonym “JD Smith,” advocating for the LGBT military community. But after President Obama signed the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010, Seefried publicly came out. After years of LGBT advocacy, Seefried left a lasting mark on the military. He entered the Air Force with high hopes and left it a place that he could feel proud of having been a part of.Borne the Battle Veteran of the Week:Army Veteran Melissa Margain Additional Links: Seefried published Our Time: Breaking the Silence of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell in 2012, a book assembling the voices of men and women who served under Don't Ask Don't Tell. To make the COVID-19 vaccine available to more people and to encourage people to get vaccinated, San Diego County is offering walk-up, no-appointment-needed vaccinations at some of its county-run sites. Plus, San Diego prosecutors want to remove about 350 people who have turned their lives from the gang injunction list that San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria called “outdated” and longer serves “their alleged purpose.” Also, California will lose a congressional seat for the first time in the state's history and many are now wondering what this means for their voice in Washington. In addition, San Diego police are sounding the alarm on what they say is the rise in ghost guns, homemade, unserialized firearms that are almost impossible to trace. A decade after Don't Ask Don't Tell ended, one of Naval Avaition's few openly gay pilots says that wasn't enough to save his career. And, video footage played a key role in both the Rodney King and George Floyd trials, but the outcomes were vastly different. What changed? Finally, a new album by Silent, a Mexicali-based band, tackles the toxicity of hate with a powerful goth-punk beauty.

Scripture of the Day:    Acts 6:4   “We will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the Word”  Ask – Don't Beg Have you ever wondered if God really “hears” your prayers?  I mean, how many times have you prayed and wondered if you said the “right” thing?  You have heard preachers say, “ask according to God's will.”  So, if you do not get the answer you are looking for, does that mean you asked “out of God's will?” Can you go to God and ask Him to save your loved ones?  What about healing?  Is it possible to pray for healing?  Will God answer your prayer?  Can you ask God to Bless your finances?  Will He Bless your finances?   Is asking for money or prosperity “wrong?” Why does it appear that others get their prayers answered, but you don't?  Are they doing something different?  Do they have “greater Faith” than you do?  Does God love them more than He loves you? What you need to do is be SPECIFIC in what you are asking God for in prayer and then stand continually on the promises you find in His Word concerning answering your prayers. Today is January 1st, 2021.  It’s a new year that also marks the end of 2020.  This means 2020 is behind us. Nothing good comes from reflecting back on the drama of 2020. There is no need to look back on your past, instead, let’s get focused on the changes we can make moving forward to better ourselves and those around us.  If you have bad credit or low credit as some say, start paying your bills and correct the situation. Call your creditors and work out a resolution.  If you can’t work through this one problem I guarantee you will fail as a real estate investor because you will certainly encounter greater challenges as an investor than negotiating with creditors. If you are saddled with credit card debt, stop using them today and begin paying them off as fast as possible.  Dave Ramsey teaches Financial Peace University which will make it simple to get out of debt if you are willing to do the work. If you are under-earning, stop overspending and focus on earning what you are worth. If you are not earning what you are worth, change jobs, change careers or work more hours to get out from underneath the grasp of your creditors. You can fix your own problems, that begins with admitting you have a spending and/or earning problem.  Please stop lying to yourself. Do not leverage the equity in your home, it’s a trap that could leave you homeless. Learn how to raise private money instead.  If you refuse to learn how to raise private money you will most likely fail as a real estate investor because banks only loan money to people who do no need it.  Closing costs alone will greatly reduce and profits you hope to make in the first few years.  Don’t leave your financial future to be decided by some salaried loan officer making chump change as an annual salary. If you are about to do a deal, will it pay for itself?  Are you taking the opinion of those who stand to benefit by you proceeding with the deal?  Sellers Lie, Realtors Lie, Wholesalers Lie...facts are facts so verify everything. Embrace the idea that you MUST generate motivated seller leads to survive.  Nobody will bring a great deal to your front door ever, instead you will need to go out and seek motivated sellers. There is no such thing as a property that is priced right.  Everything is overpriced, always has been always will be so stop looking for a “great deal” to be advertised.  Finding a great deal has nothing to do with the asking price. Sellers, Realtors, and Wholesalers are not appraisers.  Also, the appraiser’s opinion of value doesn’t really matter either.  What matters is knowing if the property will yield the profit margin you believe it will, if not, you are not done negotiating. Don’t guess about anything in 2021.  Don’t guess as to why someone is selling, ASK Don’t try to guess what number a seller will say yes to...talk to them instead. Remove as many middlemen from the equation as ethically possible.  That doesn’t mean you should go around Realtors or wholesalers who have a written agreement with a seller, instead, market directly to non represented sellers yourself and filter them down such that you only speak to the non-motivated ones. The Bottom line is that 2021 can and will be your best year ever.  For that to happen, you have to give yourself permission to fail and continue to fail until you succeed.  You know right from wrong, you know what’s logical and what’s not.  You don’t need to invest tens of thousands of dollars into education to buy an investment property, instead, apply basic logic and you will far exceed your expectations.

Brown liberates the text from its minimum daily requirements and embraces a brilliantly pedestrian approach - jumping between a high school class struggling with Romeo & Juliet to the struggles of love and hate in the hallways of an empty school - to juxtapose how we learn and how we live Shakespeare.

Nevertheless, Rob was gracious enough to indulge some very basic questions that, to some viewers, might have seemed disrespectful, so we should point out that we had discussed those questions in advance of the interview, precisely because they were included as part of several education sessions Rob previously led at Todd’s law firm. Many thanks to Rob for his insights.

The merry partners are all ready to get down to some seafaring except, whoops, Reed announces that he had to cancel the one charter they had booked without giving anyone any notice, and he doesn't seem to be that interested in rescheduling it, or lining up any more business. Jake and Amanda's attempt to get him on track just ends in Amanda demanding her money back. Meanwhile, Jo discovers the secret trap door, and though she initially accepts Reed's explanation that it's to save him lugging valuables on and off, it's on her mind when Jake warns her that, according to the state of California, Reed's boat officially does not exist. Will Jo survive her own curiosity? Billy and Alison's attempts to make a long-distance relationship work are hampered by Billy's horny new co-worker, who's apparently determined to set Billy up with someone immediately and won't take "I have a girlfriend" for an answer. Out of his mind recovering in the hospital, a delirious Michael starts babbling some incriminating remarks about blood alcohol this and Matt that -- unfortunately, within Sydney's hearing. Matt and Michael aren't sure what she's going to do with this information, but they're not thrilled she has it. And as Matt continues trying to understand what it's like to work under Don't Ask Don't Tell, he encourages Jeffrey to live his truth, with unintended consequences. The U.S. Postal Service is a vital institution. It is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation. Given how important the post office is to our economy and to our lives, why is it constantly in need of "saving"? We get a lesson from Mack Julion, a 20+ year letter carrier and postal union representative on the structure and restrictions of the postal service and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand joins us to discuss the proposal to return postal banking services. Our Guests Mack I. Julion began his career as a letter carrier in Chicago, IL, in 1997 and joined Chicago Branch 11. He served his branch as steward, sergeant-at-arms and branch auditor. In 2008, then-NALC President William H. Young appointed Julion to the post of regional administrative assistant (RAA) for Region 3. The next year, Branch 11 elected Julion as branch president. He was re-elected branch president by the members in 2012, 2015 and by acclamation in 2018. Julion is also an arbitration advocate and intervention specialist. NALC President Fredric Rolando appointed Julion as trustee in May 2018 to fill a vacancy before he was elected to the position later that year. Julion also is a member of the Chicago Federation of Labor’s Executive Board and delegate to the National Executive Board of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. In addition, Julion serves on Chicago Amalgamated Bank labor council, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Labor Advisory Board and the Chicago local advisory board for United Way Emergency Food and Shelter Programs. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has been a leader in some of the toughest fights in Washington. She led the effort to repeal the “Don't Ask Don't Tell” policy that banned gays from serving openly in the military; she wrote the STOCK Act, which made it illegal for members of Congress to financially benefit from inside information; and she won the long fight to provide permanent health care and compensation to the 9/11 first responders and community survivors who are sick with diseases caused by the toxins at Ground Zero. Senator Gillibrand brought Democrats and Republicans together to win these legislative victories. Senator Gillibrand believes that accountability and transparency are essential to open and honest government. She was the first member of Congress ever to post her official daily meetings, earmarks, and personal financial disclosures online. TLP183: How to Eliminate Fear - Bold Perspectives from Admiral Mullen

The Leadership Podcast

Considered perhaps one of the most influential Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in history, Admiral Mike Mullen takes a fresh approach to the most important issues of the 21st century—including America's global positioning and how business trends and the economic health of the U.S. directly impact our national security. Admiral Michael Mullen also shares his thoughts on how to eliminate fear, and why everyone needs to have a defined set of principles and moral values they should never violate.   Key Takeaways [4:25] Admiral Mullen has taken unpopular stances throughout his 42-year military career, but you have to take risks if you want to succeed. When he took command of a small ship in 1973, half of the people he knew said not to do it/it was too risky and the other half said that he should do it/it’s who we are. A few months in, he crashed the ship! It took him 11 years to recover professionally. [7:25] Admiral Mullen gets a lot of notoriety from his position on ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.’ When Obama won, he knew the President required the help of the military. [10:45] Admiral Mullen taught History and the Practice of Diplomacy at Princeton for six years and has recently transitioned to the Naval Academy to teach leadership. [14:25] Admiral Mullen tries to teach young people about the importance of defining moral values and working with core principles. What do you stand for? You need to know. [17:25] There are three principles about the proper use of military force: military power should be the last resort of the state, force should be applied in a precise, principled way, and policy and strategy should constantly engage one another. [20:05] When you make a tough decision, you need constant feedback after, to understand how that decision is progressing and affecting the organization. [21:05] If a leader doesn’t give permission for their staff to fail and recover, then your team won’t be taking much risk in the first place. How do you eliminate fear? By empowering your people to fail. [28:20] People are so tied emotionally to how they’re feeling today that they put aside the organization they care about the most, the one they spend most of their life in, because of those feelings. Because of this, Admiral Mullen feels people do great damage to the military and its reputation. [32:50] Admiral Mullen would like to have a smaller army; that way if we do have to go to war and have to draft our sons and daughters for it, the American people along with Congress have to think very carefully whether doing that is the right choice. It’s way too easy to go to war today and that’s the most serious decision a president will ever have to make. [41:25] Veterans are having a tough time getting jobs and Admiral Mullen understands why. He has helped create veterans and throughout his career, he and his peers spent zero time helping veterans transition from military life to civilian life, and we need to get better at that. The transition phase is the hardest one to go through, not just for military personnel, but for their families, too. [48:15] Admiral Mullen gives a shout out to an organization that he and his wife deeply care about — TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors).   Quotable Quotes “People who will not risk cannot win.” “In the military, even when it’s going really well, it’s a dangerous business.” “When you teach, you really do have an opportunity to reflect.” “What we do in one place affects so many other people in the organization.” “I had bosses who really encouraged me to take risks and when I fell on my face, they took care of me.”   Admiral Michael Mullen on Wikipedia Princeton University Faculty — Admiral Michael Mullen  17th Chairman of The Joint Chiefs of Staff — Admiral Michael Mullen Admiral Michael Mullen in The New York Times TAPS.org    ~~~~~ ~~~~~ Strategic Partners   The Leadership Podcast is proud to announce a new initiative with thoughtLEADERS to provide very short podcasts called Chalk Talks. This week on MIA Radio, we interview US Navy Veteran and Co-Founder of Minority Veterans of America, Lindsay Church. Lindsay served from 2008-2012 as a Cryptologic Technician Interpretive (Linguist). During her time in the service, she attended language school at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA where she learned Persian-Farsi. After spending two years at a cyber intelligence command, she left the Navy and returned home to Seattle. Upon returning home, Lindsay attended the University of Washington where she earned her BA in Near Eastern Language and Civilization and Islamic Studies and an MA in International Studies – Middle East. At the University of Washington, Lindsay co-founded the office of Student Veteran Life, where she also served as the University Liaison for the Student Veterans of AmericaChapter there. In 2017, Lindsay started the Minority Veterans of America to ensure there is a community of support around the underrepresented veterans so that we may see the true diversity of the U.S. military reflected in our veteran communities. We discuss: How Lindsay was enlisted in 2008 under “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” and served all but three months of her time in the Navy under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. That Lindsay is a third-generation Navy veteran with many family members also serving. How during her Navy career she had multiple health issues arising from an inverted sternum, but a surgical procedure was botched and she experienced multiple complications, spending 5 days in ICU with a collapsed lung. How within 18 months of enlisting she had been prescribed 16 different medications including painkillers, antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. How she then had to endure a number of further surgeries but managed to complete language school in spite of the surgeries and complications. Lindsay recalls being amazed that she is alive considering the cocktail of meds she was prescribed. How she came to be stuck for six months at a medical barracks in San Diego. That Lindsay got to a point in 2010 where she felt that she couldn’t go on. That she was being transitioned between Klonopin, Effexor, Valium and Zoloft almost every month which led to intense suicidal thoughts and how she considered jumping from a fifth-floor window. That she recalls asking for psychological support but instead only received more psychiatric drugs. How Lindsay made the decision in 2010 to get off the antidepressants and then in 2011 came off the opioids and has refused painkillers since, finally in 2012 she came off the anti-anxiety drugs. Lindsay says that it hurts to have realized that suicidal thoughts occurred during times of being switched between psychiatric medications, and changes her way of viewing past events in her life. How Lindsay notes that it is very easy to get referred into psychiatry and onto the drugs but very difficult to find appropriate psychological support. That Lindsay moved back to Seattle after leaving the Navy in 2012 and is thankful her mom is a veteran, as she helped her navigate the VA. How Lindsay’s experiences both with the military medical system but also witnessing pervasive misogyny, racism and homophobia in the American Legion, led her to resign her position and to co-found the Minority Veterans of America. How she found that female veterans are 2.2 times more likely to die by suicide than their civilian counterparts and LGBTQ veterans are 2 times more likely to die by suicide than their civilian counterparts. That she now works with people of color, women, LGBTQ and religious and non-religious minorities, many of whom are disenfranchised from the veteran community, so the goal is to bring people into a supportive community to break the isolation, because isolation is a killer. How important social engagement is to address the isolation felt by minority veteran communities. That as regards herself, she is working on reaching the person that she was five years ago when she didn’t think that she belonged or that her story was unique, or even worthy of even being told. That if readers want to know more they can visit MinorityVets.org which is a non-profit. How she feels that we don’t have another three to five years to address the suicide epidemic amongst the veteran community, Congressional action is needed now. Why Listen: One aspect that I loved about my conversation with Dan is how his story exemplifies a middle road for Veterans. Often, I interview Veterans who take a wildly different career path after their military experience. I also interview many Veterans who take a career path that is directly related to their military experience. Dan found a way to split the difference. His career path utilized one piece of his military experience, while also allowing him to branch into an entirely different industry. We talk about how we made the switch from submarines into the clean energy space. We talk about the rapid growth occurring in this industry, and why mission-oriented Veterans might love this field. Dan also served during the time of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, and shares his experience of coming out to his wardroom. This aspect of my conversation helped me build empathy and understanding for someone who had the exact same military career path that I did, yet was impacted by a policy in a way that I never had to experience.    For listeners who enjoy this episode, check out these three episodes, which I’ll link to in our show notes at Beyond the Uniform; BTU #186 - Army Veteran to Blockchain and Ethereum at ConsenSys (Donnie Benjamin) - https://beyondtheuniform.org/blog/btu-186-army-veteran-to-blockchain-and-ehterium-donnie-benjamin-consensys?rq=benjamin BTU #221 - Navy Veteran to the Cannabis Industry @ CannaCraft (Cheriene Griffith) - https://beyondtheuniform.org/blog/btu-221-navy-veteran-to-the-cannabis-industry-cannacraft-cheriene-griffith?rq=cheri BTU #213 - Navy Veteran to Cyber Security at FireEye (Lauren Burnell) - https://beyondtheuniform.org/blog/btu-213-navy-veteran-to-cyber-security-at-fireeye-lauren-burnell?rq=cyber   While these three interviews are not about clean technology, they each share a commonality of covering industries that are new and rapidly growing. They are all also relatively new fields. This means that there aren’t a lot of people who have decades of experience in these fields, so a military Veteran who is a newcomer to the space doesn’t have as much ground to catch up on.   About Dan Dan Misch is the Federal Project Director with the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center and the Founder of the Veterans Advanced Energy Summit. He started out at the Naval Academy, after which he served on Submarines for five years, including three nuclear deterrent patrols. He is a member of the Truman National Security Project Defense Council and Energy Expert Group.

THE BIRDCAGE (1996), ELLEN: “THE PUPPY EPISODE” (1997), IN & OUT (1997) Come one, come all, and COME OUT ALREADY for When We Were Young’s most same-sex-loving episode yet! In honor of Coming Out Day, Episode 26 takes a furtive glance back at the gay 90s, which marked a sea change in pop culture's depictions of people who are — yep! — gay. First, our hosts coop up in The Birdcage, Mike Nichols’ 1996 comedy that pushes Robin Williams and Nathan Lane back in the closet to appease Ally McBeal's right-wing parents. Next, we touch on Ellen DeGeneres' game-changing "Puppy Episode," the coming out party heard 'round the world. And finally, we celebrate the 20th out-iversary of In & Out, starring Kevin Kline as a small-town teacher outed at the Oscars, and Joan Cusack as his increasingly desperate bride-to-be. Plenty of social progress has been made in the days since Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and DOMA, so how do these mid-90s gay characters hold up in 2017? Practice your John Wayne walk, book some therapy with Oprah, and stop dancing to “I Will Survive,” because our hosts’ opinions of these films are definitely NOT homogeneous. Relate And Respond - Bro. Jimmie Witherspoon Luke 10:33-34 (NLT) “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds… The despised Samaritan related to the wounds of the Jewish traveler. Can you relate and respond to their wounds? Ask Don’t Assume - Pastor David Rathel Philippians 2:1-4 (NLT) Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? 2Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. 3Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. Christ Over Color, Culture, & Clan - Pastor David Rathel Colossians 3:7-11 (NLT) You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world. 8But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. 9Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.10Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. 11In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you area Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us. Engage For Eternity - Missionary Twinkle Johnson Revelation 7:9 (NIV) After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. 1 John 4:20 (NIV) Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.

How did a disheveled, intellectually combative gay Jew with a thick accent become one of the most effective politicians of our times? In this feisty and moving memoir, former Congressman Barney Frank recounts the battle over AIDS funding in the 1980s, the debates over "big government" and gays in the military during the Clinton years, and the 2008 financial crisis. In 2010 he coauthored the most far-reaching, and controversial, Wall Street reform since the Great Depression and helped bring about the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell.Barney Frank also discusses the frustrations and fears that come with elected office. He recalls the emotional toll of living in the closet for many years and how he decided to reveal his sexuality when the conflict between his public crusade against homophobia and his private accommodation of it was becoming unbearable. He discusses his quarrels with allies, his friendships with other public figures, and how he found love with his husband, Jim Ready.Recorded On: Thursday, March 19, 2015

Aaron Kahn is a litigator specializing in commercial litigation, trust and probate litigation, and white-collar internal investigations and defense. He has represented clients in both state and federal court, as well as in multi-million dollar arbitrations in connection with disputes involving personal and business torts, contract law, commercial fraud, unfair competition/false advertising law, trust & probate law, and constitutional law. His clients have included individuals, small businesses, charitable institutions, and large international corporations in a variety of industries including sports & entertainment, technology, retail, health care, manufacturing, real estate development, engineered products and services, financial services, legal services, and banking. Mr. Kahn's significant recent experience includes being a member of the trial team representing a major nonprofit organization, Log Cabin Republicans, in its high-profile lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the US military's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy. During the two-week federal court trial, which concluded in July 2010, White & Case presented extensive documentary evidence and testimony by experts and former servicemembers, all of which demonstrated that the policy does not further any of its asserted governmental purposes. As part of the trial, Mr. Kahn presented and examined several witnesses, including highly-decorated and accomplished Air Force servicemembers discharged under Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Mr. Kahn's recent experience also includes defending a major technology company in several high-stakes class arbitrations before the American Arbitration Association, conducting internal investigations for several large corporations concerning allegations of fraud and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations, and representing charitable institutions in high-value trust and probate challenges. Aaron Kahn serves on the Loyola Law School Alumni Association's Board of Governors and is active in the Loyola Law School community. www.whitecase.com/aakahn/ Mike Almy joined the US Air Force in 1993 after graduating from Wright State University, where he earned his commission through Air Force ROTC, as a distinguished graduate. He served a total of thirteen years on active duty as a communications officer before he was discharged under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 2006. In his last position in the Air Force he led a team of nearly 200 men and women, responsible for operating and maintaining the command and control systems used to control the airspace over Iraq. His discharge process lasted sixteen months and started after the Air Force searched his private emails in Iraq. During his career in the Air Force Mike has been stationed at Kelly AFB, Texas, Randolph AFB, Texas, Scott AFB, Illinois, Tinker AFB, Oklahoma, Quantico MCB, Virginia, Ramstein AB, Germany and Spangdahlem AB, Germany. He deployed to the Middle East four times during his career, supporting Operation Desert Fox, Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has a master's degree from Webster University, and is a graduate of Marine Corps University and Air University. His decorations include the Joint Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal and the Operation Iraqi Freedom Campaign Medal. He was named Officer of the Quarter, and Officer of the Year several times throughout his career. In 2005, he was named the top communications officer for the Air Force in Europe. In 2006 he was recommended for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, even as the Air Force was actively seeking to discharge him under DADT. Since his discharge from the military Mike has worked as an IT consultant in the Washington, DC area, on projects for the Department of State and Department of Defense. His hometown is Dayton, Ohio. He has been an advocate for repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell by testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee and lobbying members of Congress. He spoke alongside Senators Lieberman and Levin when the bill to repeal DADT was introduced in the Senate. He has been interviewed on NPR, CNN, The Associated Press, The Rachel Maddow Show, Kathy Griffin's, My Life on the D List and the Advocate.
