California firefighters have come to Oregon to help battle blazes. The Bedrock Fire continues to burn in the Willamette National Forest and evacuation orders are in place. The governor has declared an emergency conflagration over the Lookout Fire in Lane County which allowed resources to be quickly dispatched to affected areas. Meanwhile, the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office released a report detailing the progress it’s made with wildfire funding from SB 762. We check in with Alison Green, the Oregon State Fire Marshal public affairs director.   

Mount Hood has proposed a new permit system for people wanting to scale its summit. Deschutes and Willamette National Forest launched a similar system last year. How do these systems work? Last week, environmental organizers said they defied a U.S. Forest Service closure in order to block potential logging in the Willamette National Forest. The group has concerns over the impacts of post-fire logging in the region, which was devastated by wildfires in 2020. Daniel Johnson is an organizer with the Cascadia Forest Defenders and joins us with details.

The Pacific Northwest has a long history of organizing and direct action around logging and timber industries. From the Wobblies trying to organize the logging sector in the early twentieth century to Earth First!'s campaigns to stop old growth logging to the new generation of forest defenders linking the struggle for wild places and communities to the climate crisis, direct action has always tried to get the goods. For 25 years, since the epic timber wars of the 1990s in places like Warner Creek, Oregon, Cascadia Forest Defense (CFD) has been at the forefront of challenging the logging industry, complicit politicians, federal agencies and, in general, capitalism. In the past month, CFD has put up new tree-sit blockades to disrupt logging operations in the Willamette National Forest. We talked with Daniel, an organizer with CFD, about past and present forest defense campaigns, Oregon's politics around forests, logging and wildfires; right-wing militias in the Northwest, the links to the climate crisis and the resurgence of forest defense campaigns up and down the Pacific Northwest. Daniel is an organizer with Cascadia Forest Defense. CFD is a grassroots environmental organization committed to stopping the destruction of the Earth, particularly in the region known as Cascadia. The health and vitality of forest ecosystems in the Northwest, and how much timber should be cut from those forests, is laid out in the Northwest Forest Plan. But that plan was created in the mid-1990s, and has not changed substantially since then, says Norm Johnson, one of its developers. He and his longtime colleague, Jerry Franklin, recently penned an opinion piece in The Register Guard newspaper, opposing the planned logging of about 2,000 acres of mature trees (100 -150 years old) in Oregon's Willamette National Forest. Johnson and Franklin say that in the time since the plan was written, forestry science has yielded a much deeper understanding of the ecological importance of these trees, including how they sequester carbon and provide habitat for countless species. Johnson and Franklin join us to discuss what's at stake with this specific planned cut, and why they think new science should change the direction of forest management in Oregon.

When loggers with chainsaws headed into the Willamette National Forest on Easter Sunday in 1989, they found a line of protesters blocking their way. Some buried themselves in front of bulldozers. Others spent months sitting in trees, among the world’s tallest. Outdoors writer Zach Urness shares how to make an adventure out of finding your special Christmas tree in Willamette National Forest.

Wherever you are in the world I hope you had an amazing summer. I know I did. Over the last several months I've been on the road collecting stories for a broad new initiative to explore how people find their way into the outdoors. With grant funding from my partners at the nonprofits American Rivers and the National Forest Foundation along with Patagonia I made stops in the states of Georgia and Oregon to trace the routes of the great rivers that run through their biggest cities. From the Chattahoochee National Forest to Atlanta and the Willamette National Forest to Portland I went searching a direct connection between people in these urban centers and wilderness areas on Federally protected public land about 120 miles away. It didn't take long for me to realize that for many folks live in cities nature is closer than they think and with just a little bit of help they can find their own pathway to the outdoors. Along this journey I connected with an amazing organization based in the city of Portland called Hike It Baby. Created by my friend and colleague Shanti Hodges Hike It Baby connects families with children to wonderful outdoor experiences on short walks along easily accessible trails in cities across America and more than a few foreign countries. Like any great invention Shanti says the mother of her idea was necessity. "I just wanted to figure out a way to find people to get outside with. So I initially just built a website a Facebook group and a newsletter," she said in an interview.  "I went on looking for hiking groups in Portland with babies and I found nothing." Within a few weeks Shanti added about one hundred people to her newsletter list. She got texts every day wanting to know when she was hiking next. "I was leading four or five hikes a week and hundreds of people were texting me and calling me and Facebooking me. And then within a year we had a thousand and then people started writing me around the country," she said. "They started seeing pictures and asking how are you getting out with these groups of people to these amazing hikes? People started writing me and telling me they were lonely and they were looking for friends and could they start a group in their town. I'd pay to send them business cards. I'd have business cards made so they could hand them out so people could find the website, find the hikes and we built a little calendar and it just exploded!" Hike It Baby now has members numbering in the tens of thousands. And with hundreds of ambassadors around the world this remarkable organization brings families and children into the outdoors to become not only nature enthusiasts but also environmental stewards. There are Hike It Baby branches located in cities everywhere. If you can't find one near you, maybe you can start one. The Oregon town of Oakridge got an unusual amount of snow this week. The town of 3200 is located in the Willamette National Forest, about an hour and a half outside Eugene. Some residents have been without power since Sunday and the main road leading in and out of town is only open to emergency vehicles. We’ll hear from Oakridge City Council President Chrissy Hollett about what life is like there right now.

Cascadia Forest Defenders This week William had the opportunity to speak with someone who works closely with the group Cascadia Forest Defenders, which is based around Eugene Oregon. This crew has been opposing logging in the Willamette National Forest, and was recently driven out of the camp by forest workers and employees of Seneca Jones Timber Company. We talk about this incident, plus much much more in the way of contextualizing and re-contextualizing forest defense in a time of climate change, plus some important things to keep in mind if you are looking to join established political movements like this. More on this group, this struggle, and the many ways to get involved can be found at forestdefensenow.com To follow up on something that I said toward the beginning of the interview, about logging around the Asheville area, there were plans in place to log in the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests as of 2014. The stated reasons for this logging were environmental and maintenance minded in nature, but it's thought that those endeavors would help literally pave the way for future commercial logging by establishing a roadway system through the forest. Activist Cinema 10 - It's a double feature today as we take a look at two documentary films that compliment each other quite well.  The Weather Underground (2002) uses archival footage and interviews to look at the actions taken by the Weather Underground in the late 1960's and early 1970's.  A hardcore group of activists committed to the violent overthrow of the US government.  The second film is Pickaxe (1999), an on the ground look at the activists who took a stand to protect an old growth forest from logging at Warner Creek in the Willamette National Forest of Oregon, blockading the logging road and repelling the State Police.  A hardcore group of activists committed to non-violent resistance of US government policy.
