You may recognize W. Kamau Bell from his multi-Emmy award-winning docuseries United Shades of America, or from his Substack Who's With Me, or from his commercials for the ACLU. If you're a long-time ACLU supporter, you'll know Bell has worked with us for more than a decade as our artist ambassador for racial justice. We're excited to have him as our interim host for our At Liberty podcast, where he will host conversations with leaders, legal experts, artists, and storytellers dedicated to the fight for civil rights and civil liberties. In this episode, Kamau delves into fundamental flaws with the death penalty, with Herman Lindsey, an exoneree who spent three years on death row for a crime he didn't commit, and Cassy Stubbs, director of the ACLU's Capital Punishment Project. Through Lindsey's powerful first-hand account of being wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death, and Cassy's expertise representing people on death rows across the country, they unpack why the death penalty is broken from start to finish, doesn't keep us safe, and magnifies racial discrimination. With President Biden's term coming to a close and President-elect Trump threatening to accelerate federal executions and expand the death penalty, Cassy and Kamau discuss Biden's critical chance to commute the sentences of all 40 people currently on federal death row and walk us through what we can do to help make it happen.

Housing affordability is at a forty-year low, and we bet you can feel it. Buying a house seems impossibly far away for first-time homebuyers, rent prices are still far past pre-pandemic levels, and mortgage payments are through the roof. This can't last forever, and some new government policies are trying to ensure it doesn't. In this week's BiggerNews, we're talking to Dennis Shea, Executive Director at the J. Ronald Terwilliger Center for Housing Policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center, about what policies could benefit the country and whether or not they'll actually pass. Plus, what effect does affordability have on current homeowners and investors? We're answering it all in this episode of BiggerNews! In This Episode We Cover: The housing affordability problem and new government proposals aiming to help Factors that are making housing so unaffordable and why we're at forty-year lows Regulatory and zoning reform, and why we must make construction easier Harris' housing policy and new incentivizes to build 3 MILLION homes Trump's housing policy and using government land for new construction Biden's nationwide rent control proposal and whether or not it has enough support to pass And So Much More! (AURN News) — President Joe Biden has traveled to California for a family vacation while continuing his official duties, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. During a press gaggle on Air Force One en route to Chicago for the Democratic National Convention on Monday, Jean-Pierre addressed questions about the President's upcoming trip. "He's going to spend time with his family," Jean-Pierre said. "I think that's important for any families to do. Presidents are never on vacation. He's a president wherever he is." The press secretary indicated that Biden will receive regular briefings on both domestic and international matters during his time in California. According to White House pool reports, the president is in Santa Ynez which is near Santa Barbara. "He's certainly going to continue to be doing the work, going to be very much focused and getting updates — for example, what's happening in the Middle East; foreign policy, more broadly, and also domestic," Jean-Pierre stated. With President Biden on vacation, the focus for the week is on Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic National Convention. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

With President Biden out of the presidential race and support gathering behind Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place as the Democratic nominee, Silicon Valley's influence on the candidates is more obvious than ever.Back when Harris ran for California District Attorney, she received donations from tech investors and venture capitalists including Sheryl Sandberg and Reid Hoffman, both of whom have already endorsed her for president. On the Republican side, JD Vance worked for prominent VCs and even started his own, with money from Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, and Eric Schmidt. So it's not surprising that the past couple weeks have brought a flurry of endorsements and massive donations from the biggest names in tech. ‘Fast Company' contributing writer Issie Lapowsky joins the show to break down what's influencing tech billionaires in their endorsements, and what that reveals about the industry's political interests. Also, world-renowned chef René Redzepi, the creative force behind Noma, the three-Michelin-star restaurant in Copenhagen, discusses his new role as host of Apple TV+'s docuseries, ‘Omnivore.' He also digs into the joys and pains of foraging and his plans to rework his restaurant business after Noma closes at the end of this year.

In our latest episode of "Boom, It's on the Blockchain," we sit down with Jonathan Knight, CEO of Uprise Energy, to discuss their groundbreaking 15kW Portable Wind Turbine and its implications for renewable energy in the defense sector. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is one of the world's largest single energy consumers, relying heavily on oil and gas for heating, lighting, and transportation. This dependency not only contributes significantly to pollution but also poses risks to national security due to reliance on foreign fossil fuels. Jonathan delves into how Uprise Energy's portable wind turbine can help mitigate these issues. This innovative system, which can be shipped in a 20' container or two in a 40' ISO container, is towable by a standard vehicle and sets up in just one hour by a single person. Capable of powering up to 15 average US homes, villages, factories, farms, military installations, and off-grid commercial operations, it operates independently of the power grid and is optimized for low wind speed conditions. With President Biden's Executive Order 14057 mandating the use of electricity that is 100% free of carbon pollution by 2035, the DoD is not exempt from utilizing renewable energy for heating, cooling, lighting, and communications on military bases. Jonathan explains how Uprise Energy's technology offers a clean energy alternative to diesel-powered generators, making power for considerably less expense than the competition without requiring site improvements, heavy equipment, or a specialized workforce. Beyond the defense sector, we explore renewable energy innovations in farming and the future of microgrid and nanogrid systems. Jonathan delves into the intricacies of wind turbine maintenance and the transformative impact of mobile energy systems on remote and off-grid communities. Recent political chatter in New Hampshire highlights eager anticipation around the running mate choice for a potential 2024 Trump presidential bid. Noted by Kate from Maine, she expressed an avid desire for the candidate to be 'significantly more youthful'. A younger companion could bring a breath of vitality to the political landscape. The gravity and importance of the vice-presidential role were greatly emphasized in her view. Undeniably, age remains a fundamental topic within such discussions. With President Biden currently upholding the mantle of the nation's oldest standing commander-in-chief at 81, it's noteworthy that his predecessor, Trump, at age 77, held the same record prior. A hefty responsibility lies in the hands of such individuals and their deputies, underlining the necessity of a robust team. The harrowing scenes have prompted NATO leaders to consider taking new measures against Russia, namely to equip Ukraine with more weapons and impose more sanctions on Russia. But will those measures be enough? With President Biden now calling the atrocities “war crimes” and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki of Poland “acts of genocide,” what more should NATO do to help protect Ukraine and its sovereignty? On today's episode of “The Argument,” host Jane Coaston calls upon the former NATO top commander Gen. Philip Breedlove to give context and answers to these large questions. Breedlove is now the distinguished chair of the Frontier Europe Initiative at the Middle East Institute, and he has a lot to say about the alliance's approach to Russia. “There are people in our government and people in NATO that believe if we keep doing nothing and we just keep doing what we're doing, supplying them, that the risk will not grow.
