The 60th episode calls for a landmark guest...and baby, do we have a landmark guest for YOU! Andre Gower is known to SO MANY of us as Sean, leader of the gang in the cult hit The Monster Squad. A few years ago, the film was thought to be a "long lost gem" until fan demand willed a DVD release. The floodgates soon opened. After seeing the impact the movie had on its fanbase, Andre felt compelled to document this. This comes in the form of the documentary Wolfman's Got Nards, a documentary covering the lasting legacy of the beloved film. Our conversation covers this and much more. It's an absolute blast and SPOILER ALERT; he's every bit as wonderful as you'd guessed! Andre Gower's documentary Wolfman's Got Nards looks at another movie—1987's Goonies-esque kids horror/comedy The Monster Squad—and the vibrant fan community that has developed around it over the years. The Monster Squad (co-written by a young Shane Black) was a bomb upon release, but thanks to video rentals and cable TV, it slowly built a massive following. It eventually became the kind of cult classic that tours internationally, with fans showing up in costume to shout every line of dialogue at the screen.Gower is uniquely suited to have made this documentary—as a child actor, he was one of The Monster Squad's main stars. His doc looks at the road the movie took to becoming a cult classic, as well as the importance of fan communities and the connections between people with shared pop culture memories. Star of The Monster Squad, and director of the new documentary Wolfman's Got Nards, we're thrilled to welcome Andre Gower as a special guest on today's episode. Since he played Sean at the age of 13 in The Monster Squad, the film has taken on a complete life of its own with major ups and downs, but mostly ups as it grows into a cult classic. Seeing a fandom worthy of a story, Andre set out to make a documentary on the film itself but more importantly, on the passionate fans it created. We're releasing this interview in conjuction with the documentary's release: it is available today (Oct 27) on VOD on all major platforms In this spirited interview, Andre Gower shares with us more on his own involvement in both projects, and no shortage of humor and anecdotes, plus a palpable love for movies of all genres. Dave, Justin, and Paul talk about some of their favorite CHILD PERFORMANCES! They're cute, they're funny, and they've been funding their deadbeat parents' lifestyles for years! What's not to love?
We interrupt our regularly scheduled #OperationUniversalHorror (don't worry, it'll be back in a sequel) because Bill & Claire caught a touch of the zombie virus! No worries though, this is a strictly audio medium. While we can't record this week, we thought we'd give you a chance to listen to Claire's debut on the In The Mouth of Dorkness ChatCast! On this extra spooky special episode of the ITMODChatCast, we're bringing you an incredibly nifty chat from the Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester, Virginia. We caught André Gower and Henry Darrow McComas towards the tail end of their epic #DocTillYouDrop tour in which they traveled the country screening their documentary "Wolfman's Got Nards." We here at ITMOD became instant fans of the film after we caught its premiere at the Chatanooga Film Festival back in 2018, and we're thrilled to witness new audiences discover its uproarious celebration of fandom. Not just a making-of doc about "The Monster Squad," André and Henry's film partakes in a much larger conversation surrounding artistic passion and the fervor it stirs in the human soul. Follow Andre Gower and Henry McComas on Twitter at @andregower and @hdilla. You can follow the film @thesquaddoc. Go support this movie when it drops! Follow the podcast @BaCEAPodcast on Twitter. We interrupt our regularly scheduled #OperationUniversalHorror (don't worry, it'll be back in a sequel) programming to bring you this special episode. This week we're talking Wolfman's Got Nards. André Gower (Sean in The Monster Squad) and Henry Darrow McComas made a beautiful documentary about the life of The Monster Squad after its lackluster theatrical release. If you've ever loved a movie or been inspired by someone else's art, there's something for you in this love-letter to the fans of everybody's favorite monster mash. Don't worry, all you Goonies out there'll love it, too! We discuss Claire's recent rise to mega-podcaster as she debuted on the In The Mouth of Dorkness ChatCast for an interview with André and Henry. Yeah, she's on a first-name basis now, no big deal. We also talk about what it's like to be the oldest child and how words can hurt, especially the F-word so common in 80s movies. Eric and I have almost made it to our destination - the Chattanooga Film Festival, 2019!! Our next stop along the way is our recap of CFF 2018! And while there have been amazing moments that I will never forget from each of the years that I've attended CFF, 2018 might have been the best year yet! With so much awesomeness to talk about, this episode is a bit longer than the episodes covering CFF 2016 and 2017. Even though this was a longer episode, we still weren't able to cover EVERY film that I saw in 2018. So, once again, we restricted the films that we focused on using the following criteria: 1) they are movies that I saw during the film festival that year, 2) they are movies that are available online (Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.), 3) they are movies that represented the experience of the film fest, rather than just being a good movie (there are some movies that are great movies, but you could get roughly the same experience seeing them in any movie theater...and there are other movies that might not necessarily be as "good," but it will be an experience that you are not likely to have outside of a film festival). With those criteria in mind, the films from 2018 that are covered in tonight's episode are: A Prayer Before Dawn, Lowlife, Let the Corpses Tan, Ghost Stories, All the Creatures Were Stirring, and The Ranger, along with some brief highlights about Wolfman's Got Nards, Summer of '84, Tigers are Not Afraid, Dementia: Part II, and my interview with Matt Mercer, Graham Skipper, and Kevin Sluder. We end the episode by discussing the second wave of films announced for CFF 2019*!! *We recorded this episode a few days ago, but weren't able to get it posted until tonight. When discussing the 2nd wave of films, we talk about not being sure if this is the 2nd of many waves, or if it was the 2nd half of two parts (it's the later). We also talk about not being sure when the schedule will be released. The schedule is now posted on the CFF website. For tickets or more information (including complete lists of films screened each year) go to chattfilmfest.org - and be sure to follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter to stay up to date on announcements for CFF 2019. And be sure to come back soon for more cinematic discussions on The Gargyle Podcast!! Up next, we continue our CFF 2019 pre-coverage with a very special guest. If you are even remotely excited about the Chattanooga Film Festival, you will NOT want to miss our next episode!! gargylereviews.wixsite.com/thegargyle music from besound.com

¡Happy Halloween, fervientes oyentes!
This episode was recorded on the afternoon of Friday, 19th October from Showroom 5 of the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield. We are using Shure microphones as opposed to our usual condenser mics so apologies for any weird sound anomalies, plosives or whatever. Episode 26 sees Andy and Mitch LITERALLY joined by André Gower, fellow podcaster, star of Fred Dekker's 1987 cult classic, The Monster Squad and, now, director of the definitive documentary on the film, Wolfman's Got Nards, as they put their heads together over drinks and with an audience at Celluloid Screams! His chosen film? Starship Troopers! Following the success of Basic Instinct and the critical and financial failure of Showgirls, director Paul Verhoeven returned to form with his satiric bug-stomping space saga, Starship Troopers! However, it's fair to say that the reception at the tiime was less than kind. Hammered by critics and barely recouping it's $100 million budget, Starship Troopers is only now finding the love it deserves. But does it? Watch it for yourself! Ultra-violent and actio-packed, the film features an all-star cast including Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, Michael Ironside and Jake Busey. The synopsis is as follows: In the distant future, the Earth is at war with a race of giant alien insects. Little is known about the Bugs except that they are intent on the eradication of all human life. But there was a time before the war... A Mobile Infantry travels to distant alien planets to take the war to the Bugs. They are a ruthless enemy with only one mission: Survival of their species no matter what the cost... ALSO, we have a LIVE installment of MITCH'S PITCHES! Due to his well documented ignorance towards films, Mitch is shown a film poster with all titles, taglines etc removed and tasked with attempting to decipher the plot. Will it go well? The poster image can be seen below with the image that Mitch was working from on the left... Once again, just massive thanks to Andre for taking the time to join us, to Rob, Polly and the team at Celluloid Screams for putting us on, to the guys at Arrow Video for sorting us out with goodies to give away and, of course, to the audience who joined us.
