Movie of the Year: 1984Paris, TexasWelcome to the Movie of the Year podcast, where we delve into the most impactful and iconic films that have graced the silver screen. In this episode, we turn our attention to "Paris, Texas," a masterful work by the acclaimed director Wim Wenders. Join us as we explore the depths of this 1984 classic, examining its intricate storytelling, poignant characters, and the indelible mark it has left on American cinema.Wim Wenders and the American MovieWim Wenders, a visionary filmmaker known for his profound explorations of human emotion and the human condition, brings a unique European perspective to the American landscape in "Paris, Texas." Wenders' fascination with the vastness and desolation of the American Southwest is evident in every frame of this film. We'll discuss how Wenders' direction transforms the barren landscapes into a character of its own, reflecting the inner emptiness and quest for redemption faced by the protagonist, Travis. In this segment, we dive into Wenders' cinematic techniques, including his use of long takes, natural lighting, and wide-angle shots. We'll also explore how "Paris, Texas" fits into the broader context of Wenders' oeuvre and the New German Cinema movement, which sought to challenge traditional narratives and offer new perspectives on familiar themes. The Introduction of Travis, Paris, Texas' Anti-HeroThe heart of "Paris, Texas" lies in the enigmatic character of Travis Henderson, portrayed by Harry Dean Stanton in a career-defining performance. The film opens with Travis wandering the desert, mute and disheveled, setting the stage for a journey of rediscovery and reconciliation. We'll analyze the powerful introduction of Travis, a man lost both physically and emotionally. This section will cover how the film slowly peels back the layers of Travis' past, revealing his fractured relationships and deep-seated guilt. The subtlety in Stanton's performance, combined with Sam Shepard's poignant screenplay, invites viewers to empathize with Travis' silent anguish and root for his redemption. The Final 20 Minutes of Paris, TexasThe climax of "Paris, Texas" is both heartbreaking and hopeful, encapsulating the film's central themes of love, loss, and redemption. In the final 20 minutes, Travis' journey comes full circle as he reconnects with his estranged wife, Jane, played by Nastassja Kinski. We'll delve into the emotionally charged reunion between Travis and Jane, set in a peep-show booth—a symbolic space of separation and connection. This segment will examine the raw, unfiltered dialogue and the haunting score by Ry Cooder that underscores this pivotal moment. We'll also discuss how this climax offers a resolution that is both bittersweet and deeply satisfying, leaving a lasting impact on the audience. "Paris, Texas" is more than just a film; it's a profound meditation on the complexities of human relationships and the quest for personal redemption. Wim Wenders' masterful direction, coupled with standout performances and a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, makes this film a timeless piece of American cinema. In this episode of the Movie of the Year podcast, we've explored the many facets of "Paris, Texas," from its cinematic brilliance to its emotional depth. We hope our discussion has deepened your appreciation for this extraordinary film and its enduring legacy.Thank you for joining us, and stay tuned for more deep dives into the movies that have defined our times. Until next time, happy watching!
It's been so long...just kidding, it's been a week! That's the normal time between episodes. Nevertheless, we're back with Paul Schrader's first film he "didn't" write himself, the 1982 erotic horror remake CAT PEOPLE, and we're thrilled to be joined by film writer and genuine English person Esmé Holden! We talk Schrader's depiction(s) of women, remakes, zoos as prisons/prisons as zoos, and the David Bowie of it all. Excited for you to have John Heard this one, folks! Hey, come on. Our "Alone for the Holidays" season kicks off with writer/director Pat Bishop (This Fool, Corporate) joining to discuss Wim Wenders's 1984 road film, PARIS, TEXAS starring Harry Dean Stanton, Nastassja Kinski, and Dean Stockwell. Scripted by Sam Shepard, the film opens in the Mojave desert where Travis (Stanton) emerges from years of self-imposed isolation. After reuniting with his brother Walt (Stockwell) and son Hunter (Hunter Carson), Travis's complicated past comes into greater focus, spurning another road trip of reconciliation. Featuring vibrant camerawork by Robby Müller and a starkly soulful musical score by Ry Cooder, PARIS, TEXAS was awarded the 1984 Palme d'Or and is now widely considered Stanton's iconic role and Wenders's American masterpiece. Join Mama Needs a Movie on a trip through PARIS, TEXAS that includes pit stops into Twin Peaks, The End of Violence, John Ford, '80s interest rates, Disney+, The Last Temptation of Christ, peep shows, Baywatch and much, much more! Writer and performer Joan Ford returns to the podcast to discuss Mama Needs a Boo-vie's final spooky October selection, Paul Schrader's CAT PEOPLE (1982) starring Nastassja Kinski, Malcolm McDowell and John Heard. This loose remake of Jacques Tourneur's 1942 supernatural classic follows Irina (Kinski) traveling to New Orleans to meet her brother, Paul (McDowell). As incestuous undertones rage between the two, Irina is drawn into an investigation of serial murders, befriending a hotshot zoologist (Heard). This probe eventually leads to a shocking discovery about Irina's family lineage. Upon release, CAT PEOPLE received decent reviews, but proved a box office failure with only later reappraisals fully appreciating its sexy atmosphere and moody Giorgio Moroder synth score. Join us as the claws come out for this discussion of CAT PEOPLE, along with diversions into Five Nights at Freddy's, Doctor Detroit, Body Heat, Deep Blue Sea, Swiss Family Robinson, Mark Wahlberg, Las Vegas zoos, Scorsese on Letterboxd, and much, much more!

There's a little something for everyone this week on the Blu-ray scene. Especially if you like it weird. Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress again to talk about Criterion's release of one of the landmarks of international cinema. Barbara Hershey takes on apartheid and Rory Calhoun explores as Marco Polo. Peter chimes in on the Black Panther sequel while there are also new 4K releases of an Oscar-winning musical and a charming zombie romcom. Then it gets weirder with a campy sequel getting its own 4K release, Bill Paxton fighting the homeless and a bizarre internet thriller featuring Peter's favorite actress and one of Erik's favorite musicians. Last but certainly not least and weird in the best ways, another tribute to arguably the best performance of Bruce Campbell's career. Eavesdroppers! We've got another Mysterious Mysteries episode for you and this week, we talk about mysterious bits & boats… Michelle kicks it off this week by talking about metal. Not heavy metal but a weird metal wedge that was found on a beach in Romania near a pile of dinosaur bones. Why is it so special? Why is Michelle talking about aluminium production? And what's it got to do with aliens? Listen to find out. She then talks about a classic mysterious mystery that has been hanging around for 80s years: Who put Bella in the Wych Elm? You might not get any answers but Michelle gives you theories aplenty! And finally she wraps up by talking about wet patches… in particular, a sticky wet patch that materialized on the wall of the Martin's family home with supernatural consequences. Listen in to hear Geordie say ‘poltergoost'! Geordie then talks about boats. In particular, the slightly crazed set of the film Fitzcarraldo… What's up with boats and that film? Was it slightly cursed? And why is Geordie talking about Mick Jagger? Listen to find out! She then talks about a proper mysterious mystery: the S.S Ourang Medan. In the 1940s, a Dutch ship set sail for Indonesia and never returned… What happened? Why was the boat full of wide-eyed corpses? Is it connected to WW2? And is it real or was it a ghost ship? You gotta listen if you want to know more! Short Cuts waterboarded with sno-cone syrup...Love Actually from factory-irregular parts...a catastrophically premature Magnolia...it's Playing By Heart, which is 40 minutes too long, coy about a meaningless end reveal, and contains very few believable situations or lines of dialogue. How desperate is Angelina Jolie to get a reaction from her wooden scene partner? Why is James Bond obliged to deliver Intercourse PA jokes that are beneath even SDB? Why in god's name didn't Quaid and Anthony Edwards swap roles? And will your co-hosts ever agree on whether Serious Ack-tor DQ has to poo...or can't poo?
This week we cover some lesser known films It's the three movies of the "Cat People" franchise. The first two movies are from the 1940s and by producer Val Lewton (head of the horror unit at RKO). The first movie has become a cult classic and does a lot with a very small budget. Check out several of Lewton's most popular movies on Shudder. The 1982 "Cat People' takes the series in a different direction. Malcolm McDowell and Nastassja Kinski star as brother and sister cat people. While the first "Cat People" relied on shadows and jump scares, this movie shows the transformation. The show is much sexier than the original. Poor Nastassja sent half of the movie in the nude. David Bowie also contributed the theme song known as "Putting Out Fire". In honor of the first cat person Irena Dubrovna, I included some favorite Serbian dishes. One of my favorite photo documentaries is Darkness & Light, which is a fantastic look into the mind and work of Richard Avedon. A lot of people know Avedon from his photographs in the American West – bold monochrome portraits set against stark white backgrounds or “that poster.” You know the one – it features a nude Nastassja Kinski lying on a concrete floor entangled with a massive Burmese python. Originally shot for Vogue, the poster went on to sell millions of copies.Avedon's career spanned six decades and his work bridged the gap between art and commerce in a way that few others managed to do – either before or since – and yet still he felt dissatisfied with all that he had accomplished as a photographer.“I've never been able to put all I know into a photograph,” he said. “A photograph can be an adjective, a phrase. It can even be a sentence or a paragraph, but it can never be a chapter. So it's been a lifetime of frustration in terms of expressing myself because of the limitations of the visual image. I believe in it-but it's limited.”Avedon has been at or near the the top of my list of favorite photographers for the better part of three decades but honestly it's still hard for me to articulate why I feel such a connection to his work. There's an obvious technical mastery of the medium, but I could say the same for dozens of photographers whose work doesn't hold my interest in the same way or resonate as deeply as that of Avedon. So what is it that makes his work so compelling to me? Does he deserve the accolades and if so, why?I was talking to my friend Hugh Talman and happened to have my little Zoom H2 with me and asked if we could hit the record button since the odds are pretty good that at least one amazing story will emerge. Hugh recently retired from a 33-year tenure at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, first as a darkroom tech and then as a photographer. Before that, he spent 12 years at the National Archives where he printed many of Matthew Brady's glass plates from the Civil War as well as the work Timothy O'Sullivan did as part of the Western Survey. His knowledge and experience in all things photographic is staggering and if anyone could answer the question, it would be him.Subscribe: iTunes | Pocket Casts | Overcast | RSSI'd love to hear from you.
Berk Reviews Movie Club episode 065 - Paris, Texas (1984) For year 2 of Berkreviews.com Movie Club, the month of April has Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) picking movies from the '80s that they've missed for some reason or another. Of course, that leaves a lot of movies to choose from and they have to narrow it down to only four for the month. Jonathan picked Paris, Texas (1984) because the film was talked about so much after Harry Dean Stanton's passing that it'd been on his radar for a while now. The film is directed by Wim Wenders and written by Sam Shepard starring Harry Dean Stanton, Nastassja Kinski, Dean Stockwell, Aurore Clément, and Hunter Carson. This was a first time viewing for both Corey and Jonathan and each seemed to enjoy it. Next episode: Coal Miner's Daughter (1980) Corey picked Coal Miner's Daughter (1980) for next week. It is directed by Michael Apted and stars Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. Jonathan has seen parts of this movie as it is a favor --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support
Berkreviews.com Movie Club episode 064 - Kramer vs. Kramer For the last selection of the best picture winners, Jonathan picked Kramer vs. Kramer. Neither Corey (@coreyrstarr) nor Jonathan (@berkreviews) has seen the 1980 Best picture winner. The film is directed by Robert Benton and stars Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, and Jane Alexander. It's a film that's premise sounds like it'll be a tough watch, but a movie that needs to be checked off our gap list. Episode 065 - Paris, Texas (1984) The month of April is movies from the '80s that we missed. The first one on the list is Paris, Texas is a film that both Jonathan and Corey have heard a lot about since Henry Dean Stanton's death. The film was directed by Wim Wenders and stars Harry Dean Stanton, Nastassja Kinski, and Dean Stockwell. Colin explores forbidden love among the Cat People (1982), which stars Nastassja Kinski as a woman who begins to fear that her burgeoning sexuality, once unleashed, may literally turn her into an animal. John Hurt becomes obsessed with her mysterious femininity, while Malcolm McDowell plays her skeevy brother, who proposes an unwholesome solution to her predicament. Listen as we discuss the career of director Paul Schrader, the disappearance of the erotic thriller from mainstream entertainment, and the musical contributions of David Bowie on this week's supersexy episode!
Happy Easter from Kiss the Goat! Why would a show like ours even prepare an Easter episode? Well, first of all, we’re smart-asses. Secondly, you’d be surprised how relevant a movie like TO THE DEVIL A DAUGHTER can be around Easter! Join Christopher Lee, a young Nastassja Kinski and us for a thorough break down of a movie that sorta breaks down by itself, anyway. All your favorite segments are here, and so is that one you don’t like. Listen to it anyway! Autor: Andreas Zemke Redaktion: Diana Redlich
Celebrating a Feline Halloween, this week we take a look at Paul Schrader's 1982 film Cat People, starring Nastassja Kinski and Malcolm McDowell and Edgar G. Ulmer's 1934 The Black Cat, with Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. We'll also talk about Lugosi in general and pick our Cinemessential Cats. And, of course, we talk about Johnnie To, specifically in unhappy response to the recent Grantland article about the Hong Kong director.
