In folklore, a werewolf[a] (from Old English werwulf 'man-wolf'), or occasionally lycanthrope[b] (from Ancient Greek λυκάνθρωπος, lukánthrōpos, 'wolf-human'), is an individual that can shapeshift into a wolf (or, especially in modern film, a therianthropic hybrid wolf-like creature), either purposely or after being placed under a curse or affliction (often a bite or the occasional scratch from another werewolf) with the transformations occurring on the night of a full moon.[c] Early sources for belief in this ability or affliction, called lycanthropy,[d] are Petronius (27–66) and Gervase of Tilbury (1150–1228).The werewolf is a widespread concept in European folklore, existing in many variants, which are related by a common development of a Christian interpretation of underlying European folklore developed during the medieval period. From the early modern period, werewolf beliefs also spread to the New World with colonialism. Belief in werewolves developed in parallel to the belief in witches, in the course of the Late Middle Ages and the early modern period. Like the witchcraft trials as a whole, the trial of supposed werewolves emerged in what is now Switzerland (especially the Valais and Vaud) in the early 15th century and spread throughout Europe in the 16th, peaking in the 17th and subsiding by the 18th century.The persecution of werewolves and the associated folklore is an integral part of the "witch-hunt" phenomenon, albeit a marginal one, accusations of lycanthropy being involved in only a small fraction of witchcraft trials.[e] During the early period, accusations of lycanthropy (transformation into a wolf) were mixed with accusations of wolf-riding or wolf-charming. The case of Peter Stumpp (1589) led to a significant peak in both interest in and persecution of supposed werewolves, primarily in French-speaking and German-speaking Europe. The phenomenon persisted longest in Bavaria and Austria, with persecution of wolf-charmers recorded until well after 1650, the final cases taking place in the early 18th century in Carinthia and Styria.[f]

Far before the time of Shakespeare, there was a prevalent belief in the creatures known as werewolves, or lycanthrope, as they were called in the Ancient world. This belief saw a large increase by the 16th century, with people believing werewolves were humans capable of shape shifting into the form of a large and evil wolf, desiring to consume other humans, particularly children, by the light of a full moon. The legend of werewolves today is dismissed by the popular mindset and relegated to the halls of horror films, tv shows, and of course, Halloween costumes. However, in Shakespeare's lifetime, there was not only an established belief in actual werewolves, but documented cases of real people convicted of being werewolves, like the Werewolf of Dole in 1573, Peter Stumpp in 1589, and A Geneva man was convicted of killing 16 children when he had changed himself into a wolf on October 15, 1580, when Shakespeare was just 16 years old. Welcome to Oaktober Fest, our annual celebration of spooky season lasting the entire month of October! In this episode we cover stories of lycanthropy, the belief that one can transform into a wolf. Before the Salem Witch trials, the Werewolf Trials were paving the way across Europe.  Lycanthropy is not a new concept but was originally in the works as early as 2,100 BC. The true werewolf hunt, though, began in earnest in the 15th and 16th centuries. One of these guys was a for-sure real murderer, the only things in question are how many people he killed, and one other thing that I'm not going to spoil. The other person however, his story is a bit trickier. But just as bonkers, if not more so. There's a lot of craziness to be had in this episode, so enjoy!

Pocas personas conocen el mito detrás de la leyenda del hombre lobo, también conocido como licántropo. Esta se extiende por el mundo desde hace siglos, con pequeñas variaciones y siempre acompañada de terribles anécdotas de noches de luna llena.Ya en el siglo II se detectaron casos de licantropía, que Marcellus de Sidón describió como “una especie de melancolía”. Se trataba de una enfermedad mental que causaba a los que la padecían la sensación de transmutarse en algún animal.La leyenda del hombre lobo se vio propagada una vez se comprobaron los efectos que la luna llena tenía en el comportamiento de las personas.Durante el siglo XVI se detectaron los casos más notorios de licántropos. En 1521, Pierre Burgot y Michel Verdun, una famosa pareja de as3s1n0s en serie, fueron acusados de licántropos y ejecutados. El caso más sonado fue el de Peter Stumpp en Alemania (1598), cuyos vecinos afirmaron haberle visto en su forma animal y más tarde volver a su forma humana. Peter fue acusado de hasta 60 asesinatos en un mismo día. La leyenda del hombre lobo se remonta mucho tiempo atrás, antes de los mitos narrados. En el año 1 a.C. el poeta romano Ovidio escribió Las Metamorfosis (poema compuesto por 15 libros). En el primer libro nos contaba la historia del rey Licaón – cuyo nombre dio origen al termino licántropo – un hombre religioso y culto, que llevó su devoción al extremo. The cannibal Peter Stumpp, who was nicknamed the Werewolf Killer, was the catalyst for the hysteria that took over Europe. Like the witchcraft trials as a whole, the trial of supposed werewolves emerged in what is now Switzerland (especially the Valais and Vaud) during the Valais Witch Trials in the early 15th century and spread throughout Europe in the 16th, peaking in the 17th and subsiding by the 18th century. The persecution of werewolves and the associated folklore is an integral part of the "witch-hunt" phenomenon. During the early period, accusations of lycanthropy (transformation into a wolf) were mixed with accusations of wolf-riding or wolf- charming. The 1598 case of Peter Stumpp led to a significant peak in both interest in, and persecution of, supposed werewolves, primarily in French-speaking and German-speaking Europe. Werewolf trials reached Livonia in the 17th century, and would become the most common form of witch-trial in that country. The phenomenon persisted longest in Bavaria and Austria, with persecution of wolf-charmers persisting until well after 1650, the final cases being recorded in the early 18th century. In 1590, someone - or something - began a killing spree around the village of Bedburg, in Germany. Cattle and livestock began turning up dead and horribly mutilated, and soon after, some townspeople met that same fate. The work of a large wolf was likely at play. When the "wolf" was captured and transformed into a well-known man in the village, the people then realized - they weren't dealing with a regular wolf, they were dealing with a werewolf. And it was so much worse.
