Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We've got… The post HORROR BUSINESS Episode 157: THE WOLFEN and LATE PHASES appeared first on Cinepunx.
In our search for more knowledge about the horror genre, the films we love, and the people behind them, many horror fans began their journey with reference books. Long before the internet, these books served as stepping stones, introducing fans to films they had never heard of and offering deeper insight into the people behind the movies they already knew and loved. It was like opening doors for the first time—or pushing open ones that had only been slightly ajar—allowing us to explore and learn so much more. In this episode, we welcome author Bryan Senn to the show to discuss these essential reference books. With over three decades of experience writing about sci-fi and horror in a variety of magazines—not to mention his own books on multiple subjects—Bryan brings a wealth of knowledge to the conversation. So sit back and enjoy—but keep a notepad handy, because you might want to jot down a few titles to track down! Films mentioned in this episode: The Abyss (1989), Angel Heart (1987), Attack of the Beast Creatures (1985), The Believers (1987), Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1971), The Body Snatcher (1945), Captive Wild Women (1943), Chloe, Love is Calling You (1934), Class of Nuke 'em High (1986), The Corpse Grinders (1971), Cry of the Banshee (1970), Death Curse of Tartu (1966), The Descent (2005), Dog Soldiers (2002), Evil Dead (1981), The Fly (1986), The Fly II (1989), Frankenstein's Daughter (1958), Friday the 13th (1980), A Game of Death (1945), The Ghost Ship (1943), The Giant Gila Monster (1959), Halloween (1978), The Haunting (1963), The Howling (1981), The Howling V: The Rebirth (1989), Howling: New Moon Rising (1995), Lady Terminator (1989), Late Phases (2014), Leprechaun (1993), Leviathan (1989), The Long Hair of Death (1964), Lords of the Deep (1989), Most Dangerous Game (1932), The Mummy (1932), The Mummy (1959), The Mummy and the Curse of the Jackals (1969), The Mummy's Hand (1940), The Mummy's Tomb (1942), Mystics in Bali (1981), Nazi Mummy (2019), Night of the 1000 Cats (1972), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Onibaba (1964), Robot Jox (1989), Scream Blacula Scream (1973), The Secret of the Mummy (1982), Serpent and the Rainbow (1988), The Seventh Victim (1943), Signs (2002), Sound of Music (1965), Sting of Death (1966), The Strangeness (1985), Sugar Hill (1974), The Thing (1982), Toxic Avenger (1984), The Uncanny (1977), Uninvited (1988), Van Helsing (2004), Voodoo Black Exorcist (1974), Voodoo Heartbeat (1973)

Even two men who are pure in heart, and say their prayers by night, may become wolves when the wolfbane blooms, and the moon is full and bright. Intro 0:00 - 1:40:12 The Wolf Man (1941) 1:40:12 - 2:11:28 Late Phases (2014) 2:11:28 - 2:43:31 Thanks for Listening!
Pretty darn good werewolf flick. Nothing that'll change your life, just a solidly written and tremendously acted film.
Are you a fan of Adrian Garcia Bogliano's Cold Sweat? Late Phases aka Night of the Wolf? Here Comes the Devil? Maybe even Scherzo Diabolico? Well, then you should heed The Sacrifice Game co-writer Sean Redlitz's recommendation and watch 2018's Black Circle, a more underseen Bogliano winner. Sean brings the Matts a low-budget, high-concept thriller about vinyl records, hypnosis, and doppelgängers that represents the exact type of overlooked horror feature this podcast strives to highlight.
We have a new ESCAP3 POD episode for you to enjoy! Marc and Dean return (after a long absence) to the screening room to bring you another double-feature of horror highlights! This time they're talking up werewolves as they bring you In the Company of Wolves and Late Phases! Listen in and find out what they thought of these two hair-raising howlers!!!
It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a four parter anyways. 2014 was for me, a classic year for horror movies, Some would say that not enough time has elapsed to make this assessment, I say, balderdash! The highs are really high & the lows can be quite messy. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 2014? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and over 5 hours of running time split over 4 episodes. This is 2014, A Year In Horror.00.29 - What We Do in the Shadows07.36 - Also Rans (Part 2)18.59 - Blue Ruin (w/ Clutch)1.00.34 - Sci-Fi Corner 1.10.09 - Lucy (w/ Elizabeth Blake Thomas)

Pedophiles, not unlike werewolves, can be killed by a silver bullet. However, unlike pedophiles, werewolves seem to capture our sympathies. This month the Round Table is all about the Wolf Man. The Lycanthrope. Lycoan. Fenrir. We'll discuss 3 different films that expand on the lore but stay true to the themes. Keep spreading the word. @going_streaming IG: @weregoingstreaming

We cover what we deem as a modern werewolf classic! 2014's Late Phases (also known as night of the lone wolf or night of the wolf). Werewolf movies are hard to come by and we appreciate this twenty teens take on our hairy friends. A lower budget is NOT always a restriction to be able to create a memerable werewolf film!

Not only did GINGER SNAPS (2000) challenge typical horror movie tropes, but it was also a vibrant kick to the werewolf genre. This Canadian film is a true testament to satire & sharp creativity being able to depict the horrific transformations of youth through the modern metamorphosis of the werewolf. Though only celebrating its 20th anniversary, GINGER SNAPS has “cult classic” written all over it. ▶️Synopsis: United in their morbid discontentment with life, Brigitte and Ginger are two sisters with an intensely close bond. When the onset of puberty strikes the same night as Ginger being attacked by a werewolf, their connection is tested as Brigitte tries to save her sister before the transformation becomes final. ⏩⏩Discussions include: Origin, script development, blending of horror, the macabre, dark humor, relatable metaphor & emotions; brief history of the werewolf genre, how GINGER SNAPS fits in, stands apart & intentionally challenges multiple tropes; visual intensity, special effects & animal deaths in the film; production challenges & morality controversy; the positively charged vibe between the lead actors, plus supporting cast; release, reception, resurgence and rabid fan base; sequels & some of our favorite scenes. **Starring Emily Perkins, Katharine Isabelle, Mimi Rogers. Directed by John Fawcett.** ▶️**PICKS OF THE WEEK** —Lindsay’s Pick, IT (1990): Taking place in the ‘60s & ‘90s, seven adolescent outsiders are bonded through mutual torment by their worst fears manifested in a child-killing clown. When the murders start happening again, they return to their hometown to confront childhood traumas & end the reign of terror. **Starring Tim Curry, Jonathan Brandis, Emily Perkins, John Ritter. Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace.** —Justin’s Pick, WOLFEN (1981): After a string of grisly murders go unsolved, a NYC police detective’s path leads him to thinking a mythical, wolf-like creature may be responsible. **Starring Albert Finney, Diane Venora, Edward James Olmos, Gregory Hines. Directed by Michael Wadleigh.** ▶️MURRAYMOMENT: A look back at The Toronto International Film Festival declaring Sept. 5th the Official Bill Murray Day. ▶️FINAL THOUGHTS: Perkins and Isabelle starring in X-FILES episodes, Vancouver love & giving some recognition to a recent werewolf film, LATE PHASES. ▶️Next Up: DAWN OF THE DEAD (‘78)!

Movie Meltdown - Episode 521 The geek activities check-in continues as we virtually visit with Sam Drog and see what he's been up to and what he's been watching in these unusual times. And as we realize most of what we say qualifies as a headline for Weekly World News, we also mention… The Black Hole, Train to Busan, The Lost Boys, The Girl with All the Gifts, Goonies Kool-Aid, Scandalous: The Untold Story of the National Enquirer, Crank, bubble gum, Waking Sleeping Beauty, Joel Schumacher, Titan A.E., Minecraft, Bo Welch, Late Phases, the same obsession, Jim Mickle, this requiem for disaster that's going on throughout the entire movie, the unspoken demon that haunts every project, young Tim Burton, over-hyperly art directed, organic in the storytelling, name your parasites, they don't make people like that in kid movies anymore, baroque, punk, biological possession, some families hold together… because they never see each other, it doesn’t all have to be Russian novels, Lance Guest, tabloid journalism, it’s kind of like overdosing on morphine, Mike Mendez, being a social pariah, Kids Beat, that moody John Barry music, revisiting how big the thing blew up and how gross the kills were, if there was just some way... that we could monetize all that crap in your head, the TV weatherman looking like a philosopher, The Abandoned, style-shading animation, the national historical plaque… for Freejack, I can just do some cardio and eat all day, wade into the cesspool, John Carpenter, the unstoppable tides of life, we’re freakin’ out the straits, Lego, I am so invested… in this rat person movie, a rogue named Don Bluth, there was a signal… underneath the signal, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, Best Week Ever and someone did politely save my life. Spoiler Alert: Some generally referenced spoilery plot points in Train to Busan and The Girl with All the Gifts… but it’s things you probably already could tell were going to happen anyway. “Movies are a maddening rabbit hole, and you will never escape their grasp.”

On this episode of Talking Terror, the Demonic Doctor Dave returns to the show with his film pick of the week. However, he returns to your favorite podcast a little different. He keeps asking your eerie emcees if they know when the next full moon is and suddenly has an urge to play "Bad Moon Rising" on repeat. The King, The Ghoul of Geek, and The Mad Monkey aren't quite sure what's going on but maybe they should turn to Google and search for "Werewolf symptoms". While they conduct a search, why not listen in as they discuss the Doc's film pick from 2014; "Late Phases" aka "Night Of The Wolf" directed by Adrian Garcia Bogliano. It's a film that's got Ethan Embry in it. You know, the guy that likes to wear t-shirts and he used to work at that record store, Any way, tune in and stay scared people, stay scared.

Turn up the volume and lean in close. Here we go... News Features An artist going by the name “kreimkouk” has posted a video of what may be the most amazing Lego horror sculpture ever. Displayed in a seven-and-a-half-minute YouTube video, the work appears to be a large house decked out for Halloween. Then it opens wide, displaying two halves of rooms featuring scenes and characters from a plethora of horror movies including Gremlins, The Shining, Beetlejuice, The Nun, The Exorcist, and many others. The link is in the show notes, and you really should check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1A5JS6e1gA&lc=Ugx3fGI42KbKuoiidyN4AaABAg A preview for “Crawl” has just been released. What’s worse than being in a major hurricane in Florida? Being trapped in an area that’s flooding. And what’s worse than that? Monstrous alligators that take an interest in getting to you no matter what it takes. July 12th of this year, we’ll all get to join Haley in her fight to survive. Check out the trailer for yourself. It looks like it’s going to be a good one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6MLJG0RdDE If you’re in or going to be in Los Angeles between now and June 16th, you may want to check out “I Like Horror” at the Desmond. The 25,000-square-foot interactive horror exhibit features pop-art interpretations that allow visitors to wander the hedgerows at the Overlook hotel, wallow in a giant Chinese takeout container of maggots from “The Lost Boys, creep through Freddy Krueger's boiler room, and many other scenes. "I'm a huge fan of all of these films," experiential artist Maximillian, who devised the pop-up horror house, tells Newsweek. "Some would be considered straight-up horror, some maybe not so much. But they all have scary elements. They all have an overarching dark universe. And I really wanted to touch the different horror fandoms." If you can’t make it to LA, the artist says he’d like to take it on the road, so you may get a chance in the future. https://www.newsweek.com/i-scary-movies-installation-1402649 If you’re a fan of horror based on real places and maybe-real events, you may want to check out "Amityville: Mt. Misery Road" Coming on DVD May 7th. Said to be the most haunted road in America, Mt. Misery Road in Long Island NY, comes alive in this thriller. Charlie and Buzi (both the main characters and the creators of the film) travel to the mysterious road, which is haunted by legendary stories of creatures such as Mothman and Hellhound and ghosts from an old, abandoned asylum. The couple fight to keep it together through one thing after another, but the forces of evil are strong. Check out the PR Newswire article for more details. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/a-new-horror-film-amityville-mt-misery-road-coming-on-dvd-may-7th-300843680.html Vox has quite an article titled “Inside the haunted doll markets of eBay and Etsy”. Haunted doll sellers and collectors say buyers should beware. Because possessed and haunted dolls aren’t just the realm of movies like Annabelle and Chucky. They’re real. “Etsy and eBay list thousands of dolls purportedly inhabited by everything from evil witches to judgmental spirits that might call you fat to young children and fairy spirits. Most haunted dolls sell for around $50 plus shipping, but the most highly prized ones are priced well into the four figures. There’s a formula, too, for how they’re sold: Each listing contains a detailed overview of the spirit’s life story, details of said spirit’s death, and a description of their personality. Dolls are labeled “active” or “highly active” if paranormal phenomena are said to occur frequently in their vicinity. Some are advertised as being able to move objects, make noises, or communicate via telepathy or Ouija board, while others are meant to act as creative muses, play matchmaker by revealing potential lovers in dreams, or emit positive energy.” You really should read the article to learn the stringent testing process that some dealers use to assure that the dolls are genuine. Skeptical? A believer? Well, decide for yourself. https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/5/3/18525659/haunted-doll-buy-ebay-etsy-annabelle-childs-play Universal Studios Classic: “The Invisible Man” (1933) A scientist finds a way of becoming invisible, but in doing so, he becomes murderously insane. Amazon Link Contemporary Classic: “The Tunnel” (2011) An investigation into a government cover-up leads to a network of abandoned train tunnels deep beneath the heart of Sydney. If that sounds like something you’d like, you’re in luck. High Moon, the western horror movie, is coming. Written and directed by Josh Ridgway, the movie follows a mysterious gunslinger named Colt (played by Chad Michael Collins) with a mission to kill every living werewolf (or “howler”) after a gang of lycans killed his wife. With the help of historians and scholars, Englund takes frightening, creepy, and unsettling news stories from long ago and brings them back to life. “How can you make fascinating and petrifying stories even more scary? It looks like Stallone is following Bruce Willis into the dark realms of DTV, and this week we cover two films in which he's given prominent billing when in fact he's taking a back seat for much of the running time. So this week, Mike and Rich take a belated look at ESCAPE PLAN 2 (available on Netflix), which also manages to rope in the likes of Dave Bautista and Titus Welliver, as well as BACKTRACE, in which a amnesiac Matthew Modine tries to remember where he hid the takings of a heist gone wrong. Not only that but we have the latest chapter in the Death Race franchise, DEATH RACE: BEYOND ANARCHY - starring a guy with a forgettable name and directed by Don Michael Paul, who has a good pedigree of delivering exciting DTV action. As a lead in to our review, Mike delivers a BEGINNERS GUIDE to the franchise to-date. We also review the Australian Alien Invasion movie OCCUPATION! Our DTV THROWBACK this week is the werewolf movie LATE PHASES, which can be found on Amazon Prime, and we also take a look at the short film, BLUEPRINT. SimonUK and Ryan go to the dogs with two monstrously good films set to make anyone howl. We talk the werewolf genre and the troubles which ail it, but also what goes right in two movies sure to transform you into the Halloween mood. It's two modern-era movies doing something a bit different with an age-old idea, and maybe coming out the top of the pack? And, of course, there's a detour into discussing Sean Connery for absolutely no reason.

Tyler and Kayla are live from a blanket fort, guest-free, to talk about the baffling Martin Scorsese film Shutter Island. It’s loosey, it’s goosey, and it’s a little bit drunk. Tyler waxes rhapsodic about Late Phases and is wholly unimpressed with everything in The Loft that isn’t a pretty man. Kayla spoils The Intern and just barely forces the Chris Evans Corner into the pod. Also, Jason Schwartzman’s giant dick! As for the main event, we fail to contain our disdain and quickly go full swearwolf on Shutter Island. Clunky foreshadowing, continuity errors, and a lack of Michelle Williams – there’s a lot to be baffled by. Also, Tyler apologizes for the occasional heavy breathing. Late Phases udkom på dansk blu-ray fra Another World Entertainment d. 16. april. Hør mere om filmen i podcasten og læs om blu-rayen på bloggen.

It's been a long time since the guys have seen a werewolf movie that pleased them (after all the last one watched for the show was Jack and Diane). You also get Mike's News and a list of the top 13 gimmicks in horror movies (be prepared to jump in Kane Hodder's time machine).
