Reconstructing German-Jewish Cultural Heritage after the Los Angeles Wildfires: A Conversation with E. Randol Schoenberg.

This week's episode of then & now is part of a series examining the effects of one of the most powerful and destructive natural disasters in U.S. history: the Los Angeles Wildfires. Co-sponsored by the L.A. History Collaborative— a new consortium of cultural institutions and historians committed to using the tools of history to assist in the reconstruction of the lives and stories of those deeply affected by the L.A. Wildfires—we sit down with E. Randol Schoenberg, an LA-based lawyer and genealogist, to discuss the lives and cultural property lost during this devastating event. As the grandson of Austrian-American composers Arnold Schoenberg and Erich Zeisl, both of whom emigrated to the U.S. to escape the terror of Nazism in Europe and subsequently settled in West L.A, Randy serves as a custodian of his family's historical legacy. Tragically, Randy's family not only lost several homes in the fires but also the entire inventory of sales and rental materials from Belmont Music Publishers, which included manuscripts, original scores, and printed works. The German-Jewish immigrant community has experienced significant cultural loss due to the wildfires, as the Pacific Palisades has historically served as a social hub for German-speaking cultural figures in the mid-twentieth century. In order to memorialize what has been lost, Randy underscores the necessity of recounting and documenting this critical history.E. Randol Schoenberg is an American lawyer and genealogist, based in Los Angeles, California, specializing in legal cases related to the recovery of looted or stolen artworks, particularly those by the Nazi regime during the Holocaust. Schoenberg is widely known as one of the central figures of the 2015 film Woman in Gold, which depicted the case of Maria Altmann against the government of Austria. He is also the subject of the 2023 genealogical documentary Fioretta.Further ReadingBelmont Music PublishersA treasure house of composer Arnold Schoenberg's music destroyed in Palisades fireAfter Nazi Plunder, A Quest To Bring Home The 'Woman In Gold'Villa Aurora

In the 2015 film “Woman in Gold,” Ryan Reynolds plays Randy Schoenberg, a 30-something lawyer who takes up the case of a family friend named Maria Altmann, played by Helen Mirren, who is trying to retrieve a painting from Austria that had belonged to her family as a child before it was stolen by Nazis in World War II. While such a matter would not typically receive the attention of Hollywood, this was no ordinary case and no ordinary painting. Authored by the world-famous Gustav Klimt, the painting, known as the “Woman in Gold,” was by the late 1990s regarded as the "Mona Lisa" of Austria. Against all odds, Randy opted to sue the Republic of Austria, citing a little known exception to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, which earned the case international attention, eventually making its way to the United States Supreme Court, where Randy argued the landmark case and won. In this episode, the real Randy Schoenberg '84 tells his story. A native of Los Angeles, Randy attended Harvard School, Princeton University, and USC Law, citing the role of various educators in preparing Randy for his moment on the world stage. Randy references Lee Carlson '50 and James Lander of Harvard School, in addition to Erwin Chemerinsky and Edwin "Rip" Smith of USC Law, as profound educational influences.

This week I attended a small gathering to hear the story behind the “Woman In Gold”, the Klimt painting of Adele Bloch Bauer which was painted in Vienna in 1907. Our honored guest was Peter Altmann, one of the few remaining heirs to receive a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Klimt paintings just a few years back. He told a wonderful story of his mother who fought for years to recover the paintings for the sake of the family. It was a story of Jewish struggle during the war and a story of recovering what was lost. It was a true life story of what it was like for the Jews to have lost everything they owned at the hands of a powerful evil force. So much lost. So many lives lost. It was struggle against an pure evil that was out for their destruction. In Joshua 9 and 10, we are reminded that this was true of Israel as well. The Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites and every other established enclave in the region were hostile toward this new clan moving into the neighborhood. It was all out war. Not much different from our situation. Right? War is upon us. The evil one is out to destroy us. And he does not fight fair. He does not announce himself nor reveal his strategies. Join us Sunday as we discover the parallels between Israel's warfare and our spiritual warfare. Todd

Inviting you to listen to this podcast may make you uncomfortable. Not because we're walking around naked, but as one of our longest episodes for a good while (at nearly one hour and three-quarters long), you may get something of a numb-bum if you listen to the whole thing in a single sitting! Unfortunately there are no ways to montage your way out of it either. Nevertheless, in this bumper episode, your hosts Steve Norman and Owen Hughes are joined by special guests Andrew Brooker and Tony Black to wag their fingers in the direction of the recent Oscar nominations, celebrate the life and work of Alan Rickman, and discuss a petition to actually lower the rated R status for the upcoming comicbook movie Deadpool. As well as this, there's room for Room, time for Creed, and for us to revel in The Revenant as we spend the latter part of the podcast discussing the three big new release reviews of this past weekend. We even take a look over what else we've watched in the past seven days. Brooker apologises to James Cullen Bressack for not getting on with White Crack Bastard; Steve, in tribute to Alan Rickman, revisits Kevin Smith's 90's classic Dogma; Owen reviews the recently released My Nazi Legacy documentary; and Tony is impressed with Ryan Reynolds after his surprising resurgence after seeing The Woman In Gold. And that's still not all as we start (as ever) with a quiz and Owen suffers through the first episode of Rob Schneider's latest TV series, Real Rob, as penance for losing last week's quiz. You can see why it's such a long episode! Join us again next week as we bring back Liam and Andrew Alcock for a World Cinema triple bill. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Last episode we looked at kids seeking immortality through music, but this time we just skip all that hippie crap and get straight to how Blake Lively does it in THE AGE OF ADALINE. This inspires a look back at Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn trying to conquer the aging process for reasons of vanity in DEATH BECOMES HER, going up against Hugh Jackman making the conquering of death the ultimate quest of love for Rachel Weisz and has him traveling through time and space in THE FOUNTAIN. Michael Denniston and Emily Mackay also debate the ending of THE WOMAN IN GOLD, coming to the conclusion that it should have ripped off the final scene of KILLING THEM SOFTLY.

Though nothing could compensate Holocaust victims or their families for the atrocities that the Nazis committed, the reclaiming of family treasures stolen by the Nazis brings some sense of pride and peace. The movie, Woman in Gold, tells the story of one woman's quest to recover a stolen family portrait. Today's guest, E. Randol Schoenberg, (played by Ryan Reynolds in the movie), is the attorney who took her case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and the Austrian judicial system - and won. And guest, Simon Goodman, just like The Monuments Men, is in the process of tracing his grandparent's art collection, stolen during the Holocaust. Their true struggles are both heroic and bittersweet.

Listen to the new Satellite Sisters show.  Liz provides a complete Las Vegas Trip Report on her road trip to the New Media Expo and The Podcast Awards.  Many thanks to Corny Koehl, Ian Punnett and Margery Punnett for the road trip/friendship/hilarity.  A highlight of the trip was a visit to the Cirque du Soleil Beatles show LOVE.  Highly recommened to all.  It was an amazing and moving and totally delightful experience and a good reminder in the midst of all the Vegas noise:  All You Need Is Love.  It's actually true.  Also at the New Media Expo, Liz was very happy to meet Matt Cox, host of Brunch With The Brits podcast.  Turns out that Matt Cox lived in Moscow when Julie Dolan did and he listened to Julie's reports about Moscow on Satellite Sisters.  Also on the show, Monica brings back her wildly popular segment Science of the Obvious.  She's got some science news on why we love our dogs.  And more news on the need to exercise.  So no shockers there.  Julie's back with Putin Watch.  She's paying very close attention to Vladimir Putin's latest attempt to rehabilitate Stalin.  That's right, people.  Stalin.  On a lighter note, she wants us to go see the new Helen Mirren movie Woman In Gold and she thinks her hairdresser is trying to ditch her.

Gustav Klimt. Helen Mirren. The same director who brought us “My Week with Marilyn”. Hollister & O’Toole were asked to moderate a panel of experts (weighing in on the art, the legal issues, and the movie itself) in conjunction with a special premiere screening of “Woman in Gold”. The panel was so informative, we wanted to share some of that information with our listeners. So Jerry Forman, Esq. was kind enough to join us in our studio – Jerry is well-known in legal circles for his work on seeking restitution for Nazi crimes – he also happens to be the author of Graphic History of Antisemitism. Jerry provides great insight into Maria Altmann’s case – a fascinating triumph – everything from what to do if you find yourself before the U.S. Supreme Court and you don’t understand the question – to how Maria Altmann’s attorney found jurisdiction in a bookstore. Ryan Reynolds might have played a lawyer on the big screen, but “Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act” naturally rolls right off Jerry’s tongue. Meanwhile, O’Toole’s nose was in the book inspired by the same set of characters: The Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt’s Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Anne-Marie O’Connor. O’Toole thinks the book should be an entire mini-series (The Orient Express! Syphilis! Bambi!) – it’s that rich. As always, Hollister humorously keeps us all on track – weighing in on the performances (Jonathan Pryce; Katie Holmes; Elizabeth McGovern) – and what she thinks of both the painting and the movie. Trust us: if you’re a deep-diver, this is one podcast you don’t want to miss.

Vin Diesel said FURIOUS 7 should win Best Picture if the Oscars want to be relevant. Hey, NOTHING could make the Oscars relevant, not even THIS KICK-ASS PIECE OF AWESOME MOVIE. Holy crap, is it amazing. It’s not FAST & FURIOUS 6, but it’s close. Also on the show, Dave shows off his love for the German accent when Evan talks about WOMAN IN GOLD, and Kris regales us with stories of DER SAMURAI and Passover cake.
