Today's Summer School episode from the IBI Archive is episode 25 with fencer and three-time Olympian, Daryl Homer. Hailing from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Daryl, along with his mother and sister relocated to the Gun Hill section of the Bronx when he was five. His interest in fencing began at an early age, after encountering the word “Fencing” in a pictorial dictionary that his mother gave him. Inspired, he begged his mother to begin lessons, but it wasn't until a chance encounter with an advertisement featuring two black fencers did Daryl's Mother finally cave into her son's growing obsession. And so, at the ripe old age of eleven, Daryl was enrolled at the Peter Westbrook Foundation, an organization founded by its namesake, Peter Westbrook, who took home the bronze in fencing in the 1984 Olympics, quickly seeing his potential, Daryl was placed on the Olympic track just one year later, and his path to the games began. By the age of 17, he'd already medaled in the Cadet World fencing championships, later, taking home gold in 7 Pan American championships, also competing in the 2012 Olympics in London, the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and most recently the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. At the Rio Games, Daryl took home the silver medal in men's individual saber fencing, surpassing his mentor Mr. Westbrook, and thereby making him the highest-medaled Olympic fencer in American history. In today's episode, we discuss Daryl's early beginnings in the Bronx, what it takes to have a champion mindset, how to recover from failure, and the power of imagination and visualization to overcome obstacles. This is such a powerful episode, as we chart the sheer will and tenacity needed to accomplish big dreams. I learned so much, and I'm sure you will too. 00h 00’00” Rawhide – Frankie Laine 00h 02’02” Presentación 00h 04’06” Cabecera 00h 04’41” 1946 DUELO AL SOL (Duel in the sun) 00h 04’41” Main title 00h 05’47” Duel in the sun – Larry Douglas 00h 08’50” Gotta get my somebody to love – Martha Tilton 00 h 11’48” Love eternal 00h 14’43” 1956 LA GRAN PRUEBA (Friendly persuasion) 00h 14’43” Main title, Little Jes & Samantha 00h 19’04” Carriage chase 00h 21’44” Love scene in the barn – Coax me a little – Thee I love 00h 27’08” 1956 GIGANTE (Giant) 00h 27’08” Main title & The hunt scene 00h 32’16” Love theme (There’s never been anyone else but you) 00h 34’00” Thoughts of Leslie 00h 36’04” 1957 DUELO DE TITANES (Gunfight at O.K. Espero os guste la selección que hemos preparado que terminará con Jill Ireland despidiendo la playlist cantando “Hello and goodbye” que escribió Elmer Bernstein para la película “SUCEDIÓ ENTRE LAS DOCE Y LAS TRES”. 00h 00’00” Yellow rose of Texas – Paul Newman 00h 00’54” Presentación 00h 02’46” Cabecera 00h 03’21” Nevada Smith – Merle Kilgore 00h 06’24” Man without a star – Frankie Laine 00h 08’20” On a bicycle build for joy – B. Guest: Mike Thornberry and Preston Panetti   Non-exhaustive list of great movies that men should watch…and why:   The Chosen - incredible visual display on the life of Jesus - you can watch this on their app, on other streaming services, or even in the theater (Season 3, episodes 1 and 2 were released in theaters).   The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - Ben Stiller's serious, powerful, movie that challenges you to get out of your mundane comfort zone and get out and live life! Great line in this movie is, “Beautiful things don't ask for attention.”   The Last Samurai - Tom Cruise learns about something greater than himself, a life of service to a higher calling - great line from this movie, “There's life in every breath.”   Top Gun: Maverick - Tom Cruise goes from being the young, arrogant pilot to the older, wiser instructor/teacher in the second movie - great movie for all teachers - a student won't be greater than their teacher (Matt. 10:24 or Luke 6:40).   The Ultimate Gift - Jim Stovall's incredible book put on the big screen - story of a young, prideful man who has to learn some valuable life lessons.   We Were Soldiers - adaptation from the book We Were Soldiers Once…and Young by Harold Moore. Mel Gibson stars in the movie, great lessons about leadership and sacrifice.   Here Comes the Boom - actor Kevin James is a high school science teacher who is willing to fight for something he believes in! Other movies that have a similar lesson are Gladiator and Braveheart!   The Rookie - Dennis Quaid gets a second chance to make the MLB, shows the power and influence of a father in the life and dreams of his children. Another baseball movie that has this same essence is Field of Dreams with Kevin Costner.   Remember the Titans - great movie about the influence of good leadership and how men are willing to follow a man willing to lead well.   Facing the Giants - great movie about the power of God to call men to a higher standard in life and about the significance of trusting God especially when it seems that all hope is lost! Other great Kendrick Brothers movies: Flywheel (their first one), Courageous, War Room, Fireproof, Show Me the Father…good movies!   The Lord of the Rings - epic movie series based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien - excellent story of the battle between good and evil.   The Hobbit - another movie adaptation based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien. Great message about the power of little things done in love for another.   The Princess Bride - this movie is apparently very different from the book (I've only seen the movie and heard the book was dark and not as good).   Les Mis - great story of redemption and the power of forgiveness.   The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse - some gold nuggets of wisdom in there! It takes true strength to ask for help.   The Incredibles - don't hide your true identity as a child of God - the world needs men and women to fight against the darkness!   Aladdin - his third wish is selfless…and you reap what you sow - great lessons.   Saving Private Ryan - incredible movie about the sacrifice made for others - is your life worth the sacrifice that was made for you?!   The Pursuit of Happyness - great story of personal sacrifice and the influence of a father in the life of his children!   The Upside - Kevin Hart's serious life movie - funny yet profound!   Last Train from Gun Hill - the importance of raising your boys well.   T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. Today's episode is with fencer and  three-time Olympian, Daryl Homer.Hailing from the U.s. virgin islands, Daryl, along with  his mother and sister relocated to the Gun Hill section of the Bronx when he was five.  His interest in fencing began at a early age, after encountering the word “Fencing”” in a pictorial dictionary that his mother gave him.  Inspired, he  begged his mother to begin lessons, but it wasn't' until a chance encounter with an advertisement featuring two black fencers did Daryl's Mother finally cave in to her son's growing obsession. And so, at the ripe old age of 11, Daryl was enrolled at the Peter Westbrook Foundation, an organization founded by it's namesake, Peter Westbrook, who took home the bronze  in fencing in the 1984 Olympics, Quickly seeing his potential, Daryl was placed on the olympic track just one year later, and his path to the games began.  By the age of 17, he'd already medaled in the Cadet World fencing championships, later, taking home gold in 7 Pan American championships, also competing in the 2012 Olympics in London, the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and mostly recently the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.  At the Rio games, Daryl took home the silver medal in men's individual saber fencing, surpassing his mentor Mr. Westbrook, and thereby making him the highest medaled Olympic fencer in American history. In today's episode we discuss Daryl's early beginnings in the Bronx, what it takes to have a champion mindset, how to recover from failure, and the power of imagination and visualization to overcome obstacles.  This is such a powerful episode, as we chart the sheer will and tenacity needed to accomplish big dreams. I learned so much, and I'm sure you will to.  Be sure to subscribe wherever you receive your podcasts, and leave us a review over on Apple Podcasts, we love to hear your thoughts, and be sure to follow us over on Instagram  at Blackimagination. In this episode, they go from Criterion and Tom Noonan's directorial debut to films that were big parts of their childhood and made their adult selves feel that age again. There are musicals and westerns, Gun Hill and Walter Hill, mad monks, killer cats and big fish. They save plenty of room for big discussions about Joe Dante's Explorers and Cameron Crowe's Explorers while also digging into the new Indiana Jones set now available in glorious 4K. You will feel like a kid again and want to pick these films up to be part of the library that streaming cannot rob you of. 0:00 – Intro 3:43 – Criterion (Pariah, The Signifyin' Works of Marlon Riggs) 14:58 – Indicator (Shadow of the Cat, Nightmares) 25:23 – PBS (Hemingway) 27:19 - Shout Factory (Rasputin The Mad Monk, Explorers) 57:35 - Sony (Big Fish, Last Action Hero) 1:13:09 – Oscilloscope (What Happened Was) 1:22:16 – Paramount (48 Hrs., Another 48 Hrs., Super 8, Almost Famous, Indiana Jones Collection, Last Train From Gun Hill) 2:06:54 – Warner Archive (The Ziegfield Follies, There was a Crooked Man, Guns of Sans Sebastian) 2:33:43 - Outro

This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy welcomes in Michael Opalenski from B United Imports; Justin Philips from Beer Table in Grand Central Terminal, NYC; and William Lees-Jones from J.W. Lees Brewery in Manchester, UK. The group welcomes the holiday season with a winter beer tasting, starting with JW Lee’s 2002 and 2015 Harvest Ales, and finishing with De Dolle’s Stille Nacht. Before tasting the aged beers, Michael explains the rising trend of “vintaging” beers. Later on, Justin explains that vintage ales actually launched his interest in craft beer. For William on the other hand, his family has been brewing beer since 1828, and it was his father who took on the challenge of brewing a strong beer with natural fermentation. The group takes a stab at food pairings, starting with the 2015 Harvest Ale. Michael suggests a creamy caramel with a hint of orange and Justin recommends a butterscotch pudding with sea salt. Switching to the De Dolle Stille Nacht, which translates to “silent night,” Justin described this classic beer as a Belgian winter warmer. Finally, William wraps with a toast, thanking retailers like Justin for pushing the boundaries and Michael and his team for launching his beers to the US.Then, Jimmy brings on Dave Lopez from Gun Hill Brewery in The Bronx, NY; and Jimmy Ludwig and Mark Aldrich from The Happy Hour Guys. Jimmy and Mark walk us through the Broadway Brews project, where they created one-off beers paired with Broadway shows. Their sixth and final beer hit just as 2020 kicked in, so the duo decided to launch a new project called Curtain Up. Casting Gun Hill Brewery for help, they now have a 6.5% hazy IPA that is being brewed across the country with proceeds supporting the entertainment industry across all fronts. BEER LIST:J.W.Lees, Harvest Ale 2002J.W.Lees , Harvest Ale 2015De Dolle, Stille Nacht.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network.

https://www.bittermedicineblogs.com – On today’s show we have a discussion with 52 Blocks practitioner, Diallo Frazier. We discuss his book “The Tao of 52: The Discovery of the Lost Science. About the Book: “The Tao of 52 is one of the first books of its kind to give the history and philosophy of the Afrikan-Amerikan combat system 52 Blocks. 52 Blocks is the combat system that was developed during slavery, mastered in prison and perfected on the streets. The Tao of 52 gives the reader a complete insight into the history and mystery of 52. For many years there has been talks, whispers and sighting of 52 Blocks. This book gives the reader a simple, direct and dynamic look into the lost science of 52. The Tao of 52 is a salute to the champions of 52 past and present, from Dennis Newsome who taught Mel Gibson 52 for the first Lethal Weapon, Big K who championed 52 in the book "Street Kingdom", Daniel Marks and the Constellations movement and Lorenz Tate using 52 in the movie Gun Hill. This book was written to give 52 Blocks a recorded history, philosophy and code of conduct so it may be excepted as a credible martial arts system created by Afrikan-Amerikans.” Purchase the book on Amazon: https://goo.gl/mVtVZp About the Author, Diallo Frazier: Diallo Frazier has found a system that combines urban street smarts with practical applications to protect yourself. His methods instills the confidence to handle a situation with relative ease once the principles are applied. Diallo Frazier was among the nation’s most elite gang “enforcers” for all of his adult life. He wound up in that dangerous position because after growing up in the violence of the Chicago ghettos, he learned to be better than everyone else at fighting. His first job was in debt collection, enforcing the rules and doing anything that needed to be done to protect and keep the gang strong. In this pursuit, Diallo Frazier became a skilled fighter because he was clued in to a highly secretive street fighting system tightly guarded by the elite street gangs in the U.S. Diallo Frazier learned and mastered street fighting early on, and it allowed him to become a top enforcer. This was Constable’s last major painting of the Stour Valley, his definitive treatment of a favourite subject, which summed up his personal affection for the place and his lifelong devotion to the example of Claude Lorrain. A relaxing holiday in Suffolk in the autumn of 1827 with his two eldest children had refreshed his associations with the area and may have motivated him to begin painting this work. On 11 June 1828 he wrote to John Fisher that he had ‘Painted a large upright landscape (perhaps my best)’ (Beckett IV, p. 236). Constable depicted the Dedham Vale framed by trees, looking eastwards from Gun Hill, down along the course of the River Stour towards the sea, with the tower of Dedham Church and the village in the middle distance, and Harwich beyond. For this composition he returned to his early painting, Dedham Vale 1802 (Victoria and Albert Museum, London), intensifying the detail of the 1802 study by including the bridge across the river with the Talbooth on the right bank. He added the old stump sprouting new growth in the left foreground as a compositional invention to direct attention to the distant landscape, and as a symbol of regeneration. Constable’s inclusion of the figure of a gypsy mother nursing her child beside a fire has been criticised as a concession to the taste for the Picturesque. Charles Rhyne, however, noted that according to an ordnance survey map a well was located in this area, and that this would have made it a natural camping site for gypsies (C. Rhyne, ‘Constable’s first two six-foot landscapes’, Studies in the History of Art, vol. 24, Washington: National Gallery of Art, 1990, p. 129). Reynolds also noted that gypsies were frequently to be seen in East Anglia and that the inclusion of this detail does not infringe Constable’s rule that only actual or probable figures should appear in his landscape paintings. By including the gypsy mother and child in this painting Constable enlivened the image, with the gypsy’s red cloak providing a contrast to the green of the vegetation. Moreover, Suffolk had been affected by the agricultural depression and social unrest during the 1820s, and the gypsy may reflect the instability of rural life at this time, and Constable’s sympathy with the cause of ordinary people. In his use of a vertical format and in his composition Constable hinted at Claude’s Landscape with Hagar and the Angel 1646, a work he had admired since he first made a copy of it at Sir George Beaumont’s London house around 1800 (Beckett II, p. 24). He saw the way this scene fitted a Claudian pattern and used Claude’s method of suggesting depth through overlapping scenery. In thus paying homage to Claude, Constable also indicated that his own work was worthy of comparison with Claude’s. Leslie Parris and Ian Fleming-Williams have suggested that Beaumont’s gift of Landscape with Hagar and the Angel to the newly opened National Gallery, London, in 1826, and Beaumont’s death in 1827, may have inspired Constable to paint this work as a personal tribute to him and to their shared love of Claude Lorrain (Tate 1976, p. 152). Constable looked at landscape through the art of the past to create his own unique vision. He painted the natural detail of the location in a quite original fashion, using paint brush, palette knife and his fingers to give variety to the application of paint. He used translucent colour to give luminosity to the shadows. He created a sense of the feel of the place – the white-topped clouds suggesting summer sunshine, the flickering leaves indicating wind in the trees, and the light glistening on the ground hinting at rain that has just past. As Timothy Wilcox has observed, ‘the work that had begun in deference to Claude now appears designed to rival him, or even to surpass him’ (Liverpool and Edinburgh 2000, p. 108). The painting was well received at the Royal Academy when Constable exhibited it there in 1828 (as ‘Landscape’). The reviewer for the The Sun provided a narrative reading, observing that ‘A shower has just passed over’, and suggesting that ‘The gleaming water in the distance is inimitable’ (The Sun, 5 May 1828, cit. Ivy 1991, p. 127). Constable subsequently exhibited the painting at the British Institution in 1834 (as ‘The Stour Valley’) when one critic commented: We must consider this picture as one of the best which we remember to have seen from Mr. Constable’s pencil. It is a work of great power both of colour and light and shade, and is executed with considerable freedom and dexterity of execution (The Morning Post, 10 March 1834, cit. Ivy 1991, pp.186–87). More recently Michael Rosenthal has described this work as ‘one of Constable’s greatest paintings’ (Rosenthal 1983, p. 188).
