Now found is the fairest of roses'.
On this week's episode of ‘New Classical Tracks,' pianist Norman Krieger talks about his latest album featuring the music of George Gershwin, recorded alongside the Prague National Symphony and conductor Neal Gittleman. Listen now!

As well as being violinist of the Danish String Quartet, Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen is also a member of the folk trio Dreamers' Circus. In an aim to pass on the traditions of Nordic folk music to the next generation of musicians, the trio has devised a resource called Handed On – a project comprising original folk music in the form of sheet music and YouTube videos. If you're interested in incorporating more (or any) Nordic folk music in your lessons, listen on to what Rune has to say. He spoke about the role of folk music in his own education, the parallels between Handed On and the Suzuki Method, as well as having more variety of repertoire in lessons. This is the Danish String Quartet's fourth installment in the Prism series, the group's ongoing project that will ultimately hold five volumes of recordings linking Bach fugues with Beethoven quartets and quartets by alternating later composers. While the preceding volumes presented quartets by masters who lived to experience the 20th century – these being, in order of their appearance in the series: Dmitri Shostakovich, Alfred Schnittke, and Béla Bartók – Prism IV finds the Danish musicians interpreting Felix Mendelssohn's (1809-1847) String Quartet No.2. As Paul Griffiths remarks in the liner notes, the quartet's interpretation of Mendelssohn is empowered by Beethoven's model in terms of “vivid gesture, contrapuntal energy, harmonic boldness, and formal innovation”. The piece is paired with Beethoven's String Quartet No. 15 and Bach's Fugue in G minor in the arrangement of the Austrian educator and composer Emanuel Aloys Förster.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Prism IV (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store)Your purchase helps to support our show! Late one night in 2009 Nikolaj Busk pushed open the door of a bar in Copenhagen and chanced upon fiddle player Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen and cittern player, Ale Carr, playing some traditional Nordic tunes. Spotting a piano in the corner of the room Nikolaj joined the pair. Within minutes it became clear that there was an instant musical chemistry happening. Since that first meeting Dreamers' Circus has toured widely, performing not just in our native Scandinavia but also throughout Europe and in Japan, Australia and North America. More than ten years later the journey goes on for us all. While we all have various musical backgrounds what unites us is an interest in, and love for, folk and traditional music. Rune grew up in a household where traditional dance and music was important but he also studied classical music and to this day plays as a member of the world-class chamber music ensemble, Danish String Quartet. Nikolaj's background in jazz is evident in his fluid and melodic playing while Ale hails from a well-known family of traditional musicians and teachers in his native southern Sweden and his rhythmic drive forms the backbone of the band. We are often asked what kind of music we play. Even if it is music that does not readily lend itself to instant classification, we try and encourage people to view it as something that can transcend genres. Perhaps it is no bad thing to defy classification now and again. So while we share a love of folk and traditional music, and play quite a bit of it still, there are strains and influences from so many other music forms in what we do. One thing the band members share in common is a love of good food. The creative process in music is a little like what a creative chef does to make magic happen at the table. It's almost an organic development. Taking local ingredients, an understanding of place, origin, and background -then combine that with a desire to make something that is new, challenging and, we hope, wonderful. In our playing we seek to unlock imaginations and allow the mind to wander to a place where stories unfold. Think of the vivid colors we associate from childhood memories of the Circus. Remember the magic on entering the tent as a child -the way our senses were engaged. The excitement and slight trepidation coming from daylight into darkness. The name of the band is no accident. Dreamers' Circus music strives to invoke a place of freedom, somewhere for our imagination to play in and a space for dreaming. Schon wieder eine Aufnahme des späten Beethoven? Schon.
Frederik Øland, Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen, Asbjørn Nørgaard, and Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin – known collectively as the Danish String Quartet – have described their ensemble with these words: “Yes, playing string quartets is our job, and yes it is hard work, but we mostly do it for pleasure, like we always did.” Sometimes, of course, they revel in quintets, too, as ... Olga Scheps was born in Moscow in 1986, the daughter of two pianists, and discovered the instrument for herself at the age of four. She began studying the piano more intensively after her family moved to Germany in 1992. At an early age she had already developed her own unique style of keyboard playing, which combines intense emotiveness and powerful expressivity with extraordinary pianistic technique. Among those who discovered these talents was Alfred Brendel, who has encouraged the young pianist. A holder of scholarships from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, she completed her studies with Professor Pavel Gililov in her adopted home of Cologne in 2013, passing her Concert Examination with Distinction. She rounded out her training with Professor Arie Vardi and Professor Dmitri Bashkirov.Besides the well-known works for piano Olga Scheps's repertory consists of compositions that are seldom heard in the concert hall, including the posthumous Études of Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt's Malédiction, Olivier Messiaen's Les Oiseaux exotiques, Antonín Dvořák's Piano Concerto, Arvo Pärt's „Lamentate“, and Mieczysław Weinberg's Piano Quintet. Her solo recitals are as popular with audiences all over the world as her acclaimed appearances as soloist with orchestra and her chamber projects.Such noted conductors as Thomas Dausgaard, Lorin Maazel, José Serebrier, Marcus Bosch, Ralf Weikert, Michel Tabachnik, Antoni Wit, Ivor Bolton, Cristian Mandeal, Christoph Altstaedt, Tugan Sokhiev, Simone Young, Markus Poschner and Pablo Heras-Casado have invited Olga Scheps to collaborate with them.Among the leading orchestras with which she has appeared in concert are the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg, the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the State Symphony Cappella of Russia (Moscow), the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, the NDR Radiophilharmonie, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Prague Philharmonia, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.Olga Scheps now performs with great success in world-famous concert halls such as the Elbphilharmonie, the Berlin and Cologne Philharmonie, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Cadogan Hall London, the Zurich Tonhalle, and the Suntory Hall Tokyo. She is a sought-after guest at festivals like the Rheingau Musik Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Kissinger Sommer, Heidelberger Frühling, Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, MDR Musiksommer, Lucerne Festival am Piano, ACHTBRÜCKEN Festival in Cologne, Mozart Festival Würzburg, Mersin Festival in Turkey, and Menuhin Festival Gstaad.A passionate chamber musician, she plays regularly with such artists as Alban Gerhardt, Daniel Hope, Adrian Brendel, Jan Vogler, Nils Mönkemeyer, the Danish String Quartet, the Danel Quartet and the Kuss Quartet, with which she recorded Mieczysław Weinberg's Piano Quintet.Since 2009 Olga Scheps has been an exclusive Sony Classical artist. Her debut album ‘Chopin' immediately won an ECHO Klassik award. The two recordings that followed, ‘Russian Album' (2010) and ‘Schubert' (2012), were also highly praised by the press. Her fourth Sony Classical CD was released early in 2014 and features Chopin's Piano Concertos nos. 1 and 2 with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. The success of her solo-album ‘Vocalise', published in 2015, was surpassed by her latest album ‘Satie' which Olga Scheps has recorded on the occasion of the French composer's 150th birthday: It reached top 1 of the German classical music charts at first go. Her CD "Tchaikovsky" was released in October 2017 and she broke new ground with the album "100 % Scooter - Piano Only", on which she recorded arrangements of the most famous Scooter hits by Sven Helbig. In March 2019 Olga Scheps' album “Melody” was released, containing pieces spanning four centuries, from Bach to Aphex Twin. Her recording of the Weinberg Piano Quintet with the Kuss Quartet was released in late 2019. The present podcast is the third episode in a podcast-series, which we have named ‘The Mind of Skill'. As the name indicates, this series investigates the mental dimensions of skill—more precisely, it does so by interviewing a line of current experts.Besides being of interest in itself, the nature of skill is related to more general questions of human existence. For example, many of the ancient Greek philosophers saw a clear link between virtue and skill: according to them, virtuous individuals who were capable of living well could in some sense also be seen as people who acquired the skill to live. In relation, Buddhist teachings often stress the virtuous and awakened person as a skillful person—skillful in ethics, concentration, and wisdom. This is, in many ways, highlighted in Zen Buddhist practice in which activities such as calligraphy, poetry, tea-making, and many other activities require a high level of skill. With this in mind, there seems to be a clear connection between skill and the good life. The hope is that this series can clarify some aspects of this connection and aspire the listener to explore it. The focus of this episode is on musical skill and the states of mind that characterise expert musical performance. To introduce and outline this exciting topic, the guest of the episode is philosopher and phenomenologist Simon Høffding. Simon is PhD in philosophy from University of Copenhagen and is today associate professor at the Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics at the University of Southern Denmark. Among his many research interests, Simon has done extensive qualitative research on the experiences that occur during expert musical performance by closely following the Danish String Quartet. Additionally, Simon has published several academic papers on topics like amnesia, flow, and absorption during musical and expert performances in general. The interview with Simon will touch upon several topics, such as the role of phenomenology in skill research, the experiential state of musical absorption, how musicians cope with performance disturbing factors, and the kind of ‘we' or community that arises out of joint musical activity. At last, Simon further provides an insight into his own current and fascinating research on musical experience in different respects. We hope you enjoy the interview! All to the accompaniment of a nightmarish wobble-board/plate-reverb hybrid (with snares on) and a 1000-person samba band half a mile away. Fancy more of this nonsense? Laidoje – muzikos kolektyvų Danish String Quartet ir Dreamers' Circus skambesiai. Vieni atrasti mažuose Šiaurės šalių kaimuose, kiti – jau žinomų kūrėjų, tačiau nutapyti naujais atspalviais. „Naujienų pulse“ – jaunųjų muzikos kritikų apdovanojimų „Apie muziką'2018“ rezultatai. Prisiminsime ir prieš 215-ą metų gimusį prancūzų kompozitorių Hectorą Berliozą. O likusį laiką kiek ramesnė šiam metui tinkanti muzika. Ved. Ignas Gudelevičius.

Ze zien er jong en hip uit, de mannen van het Danish String Quartet. Met vlot gesneden pakken en baarden en alles. Fijn dat de muziek op hun nieuwe cd ook zo klinkt: hip en vlot gesneden. Maar ook gracieus, elegant en meer van dat soort chique termen zijn ruim van toepassing.
