Episode 432 - Roxanne McCarty-O'Kane - Ignite Your Passion and Write Your Book, Ghost Writing and CoachingI am a qualified journalist who has written for a number of newspapers, magazines and e-zines and am what you would call a jack of all trades.I ‘published' my first book when I was in my final year of primary school. It was aptly called School Journal Part 4 Number 2 and had a strong ocean theme, with short stories, articles and poetry about sea life. It featured a cardboard cover that held stapled paper pages and this was the first and only time I have ever accompanied my words with illustrations (and for good reason…).An avid bookworm beforehand, this project earned me an A++ and provided the initial spark for a future career in writing.Rain, hail, or shine, they always received their papers and being in the land of the long white cloud, it often meant arriving home from deliveries soaked-through.Fast forward to today and I have been a professional storyteller since 2007. My first era was as a qualified print media journalist. My second era as an award-winning nonfiction book ghostwriter and writing mentor began in 2018.Since then, I have had the privilege of assisting people of all ages and all walks of life to showcase their expertise or share their incredible life stories in books that are changing the world. I have helped each and every one of them move through the perceived challenges that prevent many from taking the first steps to authorship.Helping people to find their spark and become brave enough to share it with the world is my fuel. Guiding people to find their voice and share their message in a powerful way that connects and transforms is my why. Processing large volumes of information and a lifetime worth of stories is my passion. Providing guidance and structured order to the myriad ideas buzzing around in the mind of an aspiring author is my gift.Making ghostwriting clients feel safe during my interviews (and knowing which questions to prompt them with) is my superpower.Whether it's ‘How to make $1 million' or ‘My journey through breast cancer', every book has the potential to resonate deeply with people if it is crafted in the right way and written from the heart.I look forward to supporting you in any way you need to get the story off your heart and into the world, where it can serve, change lives, inspire, educate and even give your bank account a healthy boost!https://www.roxannewriter.com.au/https://www.roxannewriter.com.au/shop/books/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/

Should you have more of a delicate touch when you're working with high performers and top achievers while you're coaching and mentoring them? And do platitudes have any place in our coaching and mentoring work that we do with clients? In this insightful episode of the upcoach podcast, host Todd Herman delves into the nuances of coaching high performers with the acclaimed executive coach, Alisa Cohn. Named the world's top startup coach, Alisa brings her extensive experience working with leaders from successful startups like Venmo and Etsy, as well as giants like Google and Microsoft. The conversation covers the delicate balance required when guiding top achievers, the role of platitudes in coaching, and the transformative power of mantras in initial client interactions.Alisa, also a celebrated author of "From Start-up to Grown-up," winner of the 2022 Independent Press Award and the 2023 Best Book Award for Entrepreneurship, shares her journey from the corporate world to becoming a globally recognized coach. She discusses her approach to addressing complex people issues and her mantra of adding value in just 20 minutes. With insights from her work with diverse leaders, including the first female minister of Afghanistan and the former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, Alisa's wisdom is invaluable for anyone in the coaching or leadership field. This episode is a must-listen for coaches, entrepreneurs, and anyone interested in the art of effective leadership and coaching.Episode Quotes:The importance of avoiding platitudes in coaching and mentoringSo to me, so many coaches and people who do what we do express themselves in platitudes like, “Oh, my wise thing I'm going to say, “You've got to plan the work so you can work the plan or whatever.” And the problem with that is it just completely negates what it actually takes. The nuanced, difficult step by step work of change that it actually takes for the people I work with, startup founders and other senior executives. And I would just say they've already done the easy things. They've already done the medium things, the hard things really take that inner delicate inner work of understanding what's in the way and using tactics and frameworks to get there, not just overarching platitudes that I think some people write about and talk to their clients about. The delicate work of coachingI think that you need to have a delicate touch often to be effective with people. So when I'm interacting with my clients what you might see is an arrogant startup founder. What I see in the sanctity of the coaching room is someone who has topics that we both care a lot about imposter syndrome or somebody who has a confusion about what to do. And if you push them too hard, they shut down or they overcorrect. So the delicacy has to do with, first of all, my relationship with them, my interpersonal skills with them. And second of all, how can they sort of calibrate their style without losing who they are? And that is the delicate work of coaching. The role of financial background in entrepreneurial space I would say understanding the finances, but also understanding what it takes to run a business. So young entrepreneurs, when I first meet them, I'm like, “Well, how's the business doing?” “Oh, it's great. It's up and to the right.” Okay. But how do you know it shouldn't be more up and more to the right? What goals and benchmarks? What did you predict was going to happen? How are you kind of finessing or continuing to perfect your system and be able to forecast what's going to happen? What experiments are you running? How are you scoring those experiments? So, you know, the analytics and the metrics, whether or not they're financial, I think that's where I think my expertise comes into play as well to help people understand how they need to structure themselves as they're building something which is kind of careening out of control. The power of a mantra: Add value in 20 minutesThe one thing I want to share is that I created my mantra, which is “Add value in 20 minutes.” And when I'm meeting with a prospect, also with clients, with anybody, I always have it in my head. I'm here to add value. How can I add value to this person in 20 minutes? And that shows up in a lot of ways. Sometimes it's asking questions that nobody else has asked them. Sometimes it's listening and really hearing the undertones of what they're saying and then mirroring that back to them. Sometimes it's actually sharing a practical tool that they find very helpful. One way or the other, I've been successful, but I've also served my clients by having this idea in my head about how I can add value in 20 minutes.Show Links:Official WebsiteAlisa's book From Start-Up to Grown-UpAlisa's 5 Scripts for Delicate ConversationsAlisa Cohn on LinkedinAlisa Cohn on Twitter
Meet our esteemed guest, Dr. Gena Cox, an organizational psychologist and an executive coach who believes in a human-centered approach to coaching. Her perspective, enriched by her travels, emphasizes the significance of understanding every individual's point of view. She asserts that leaders who travel often develop a broad-minded approach, becoming more aware, inclusive, and adaptable. In this revealing conversation, Dr. Cox provides insights into the nuances of executive coaching, drawing a distinction from coaching middle managers. She dwells on the importance of intuition in coaching, indicating how it aids in comprehending clients' needs. The conversation illuminates how change operates on different planes and how the client's sense of being acknowledged and valued determines the effectiveness of the coaching. For those intrigued by leadership, inclusion, and coaching intricacies, this episode is a treasure trove of insights worth exploring.*The upcoach podcast is produced by Ventures FM.*Episode Quotes:On how to be an effective leaderYou can't consider yourself to be an effective leader if you only understand the needs and expectations of a fraction of your workforce. An inclusive leader is one who understands 100% of that workforce and is then able to make decisions that support 100% of that workforce.Who are the most effective leadersI grew up on a Caribbean island called Barbados, and one of the things that I realized on the island is that you were interacting with people from all over the world just because those people were on your island, and you sort of looked outward. And then, as I got older and as I traveled, I started to notice that people who traveled were apparently just more curious, more flexible in their approach to a variety of things. And so, I guess we could say that, if that is true, that observation, it probably also is true with regard to leadership because the leaders that I think are the most effective, especially on this inclusion slice of leadership, are the ones that are able to realize that they have a perspective, that everybody's perspective is sort of defined by their own experiences, and to be effective as a leader, you've got to understand a wide range of perspectives and then get comfortable with them. The one thing that's made an outsized impact on her ability to help clientsI'm gonna call it just-in-time results-focused coaching. And the reason I labeled it that way just for this conversation is because I figured the possibility that there might be people listening to this conversation who have heard this idea about results-focused coaching. Meaning you go into coaching with the perspective that you want to make sure that your clients are able to accomplish whatever it is that they desire. That's why they're doing coaching, it has to be worthwhile and useful. Well, that's great. What I've learned to add to that over the years is that I really focus and spend more of my time thinking about what is going on with my clients. What is it that they need in the moment? And so, while it's fine to talk about results and to have a big idea or a big goal that you're working towards, it's really important for me to think very clearly about the industry that my client is in, to stay up to date with what's happening, news that may influence or impact the decisions that they have to make. Because when a client is with me, I want to sort of have a sense of what's going on with them right now. That's the true value of coaching.Typical leadership coaching VS executive coachingI think one of the distinguishing characteristics of working with executives is that, first of all, things are moving really fast. You have to be ready, to be in the moment and go to flow because the thing that they might want to talk about today might be the thing that was furthest from your mind. So, there's just that part of it that you've got to be extremely flexible and nimble and able to sort of go with that. The other thing, though, is that you sort of get to the point in the relationship where you know that they're finally able to tell you what's really on their minds. It's a process in that sense. There's no shorthand that you can take to that. It's one of the challenges that I had when I would work with large companies that would want to say what their coaching process was. Sometimes, they would say this is our process; this is how we want to do things, and that does not really work with regard to the kind of coaching that we're talking about, and that's, I think, a big distinguisher between typical leadership coaching and executive coaching. You've got to have all that space for the client to be able to sort of flex and move and change. And one of the things you can do is kind of help them stay on the right map, stay on the path that they said they want to be on, but also make it possible and easy for them to deviate from that whenever they need to do it. Get ready for a thrilling journey into the realm of thought leadership, making this episode a must-listen for consultants, coaches, and anyone who's ever dreamed of making their ideas heard.*The upcoach podcast is produced by Ventures FM.*Episode Quotes:Communication coaching with DorieThe work that I do is about communication and helping people get their ideas and messages out more effectively in a loud and crowded world. We all know that the best marketing is having people come to you because they know what you're about and they like it. And so, figuring out how to break through is one of the things that I'm most interested in.The better way to come up with content ideasThere's two different ways to come up with story ideas. We often try to do top-down and say, "Oh, what's a brilliant idea? What's a marketable idea?" And when you do that, you just get so stuck. But what I think we often need to do is do bottom up. Start with your lived experiences of the things. Real people, what are they asking you? What did you say to them? What was the experience that is out there? And almost always, you can literally get content ideas and write entire articles based on the advice that you give in your coaching sessions. You just are letting it go into the ether. It's benefiting one person. But if you learn to start meticulously capturing, "Oh, wait, I told them four things. Here, let me write them down," at the end of your sessions, that is article ideas between now and the rest of your life. The best thing about communication coachingI would say that one of the biggest things above and beyond, just the emotional gratification of my being able to help people. So many of my clients come to me with a really specific desire that they feel frustrated because they're smart people, they have good ideas, they know they have good ideas, but it's always go paging through the magazines and seeing other people's bylines and saying, "Oh, I could have written that." That's such a maddening feeling over time. And so, to actually be able to surmount that and to crack that code and to have you be the person who is actually in those blogs, those websites, those magazines is really powerful. One of the most powerful credibility buildersIf you do something as an individual, everybody's like, "Well, yay, good for you, but maybe you're special or different in some way," right? Maybe you're the outlier. Nobody takes it seriously. But if you are able to help a lot of other people do it, then they begin to say, "Oh, actually, there may be a system, there may be a methodology, and that means it might be able to help me."And so, for me, that's very validating in the sense that there actually are some specific principles that you can show people and it enables them to break through in a way that may have been much more difficult if they had to figure it out by trial and error.Show Links:Dorie Clark websiteDorie Clark on LinkedInDorie Clark on FacebookDorie Clark on TwitterDorie Clark on InstagramDorie Clark on YouTubeDorie Clark books

Discover how asking the right questions can unlock transformative coaching experiences and maximize the potential of your relationships. So, grab your headphones, and let's dive right into this enriching conversation.*The upcoach podcast is produced by Ventures FM.*Episode Quotes:One of the kind of profound lessons MBS learned early on when coachingI would convince myself that the better thing to do would not be to confront a client because of how I was helping them, being kind to them, or being supportive about them. When I really look at it, I was like, no, I'm just scared of that confrontation. I don't know how to say it, and I'm worried about their reaction and getting it wrong. I'm worried about me, in other words.I want the relationship I have with the people I work with to be fierce love. Love, meaning I am a hundred percent committed to their greatness and helping them thrive and be the best version of it. Fierce, meaning I'll do what it takes to do that in a respectful way. And that means loving them when I need to love them. It means getting out of their way when I'm in their way. It means having a fierceness if that's what's required.Developing strong relationshipsThe starting point is to commit to a conversation about how we'll work together before or ongoing as you work on the stuff together. In other words, a conversation about how we're doing working together. If you do that, you can set as a goal for yourself the best possible relationship. So, this relationship has a certain degree of potential. How do we get as close to it as possible? And the three attributes of that are it's safe, vital, life adventure bravery, and repairable. It's fixable. And of those three - safe, vital, and repairable - repairable is the one that people least experienced in. And I think a question that often unlocks a conversation that helps with repair and preemptively prevents damage is what needs to be said that hasn't yet been said. Drew Wild's mission is to change the way this planet looks at and approaches addiction through the lens of trauma. And to tear down any stigma associated with the word addiction. In his humble opinion “addiction” or distraction is everywhere. People are choosing to numb out or distract themselves more than ever before in this plugged-in society. Be it alcohol, drugs, porn, social media, dating apps, Netflix, food and overeating, overworking or people pleasing, you name it, humans are overindulging to avoid actually feeling and processing their emotions and it's manifesting in the form of DIS-ease. We all know that spending time in nature is a wonderful stress-reducer. Numerous medical studies support the health benefits of allowing nature to rejuvenate us, and countless testimonials to this fact could be garnered from around the world. Why, then, do we not spend more time outside? Could it be because we believe we're too busy to have it matter? In this episode, I want to explore this topic, including the results of some studies and the benefits of even spending just 20 minutes outside. And I hope after spending about 20 minutes or so with me, pondering the statistics and anecdotes I'll share regarding the healing power of being outdoors, you'll write yourself a prescription for nature and heed it right away.“You can boost your mood just by walking in nature, even in urban nature. And the sense of connection you have with the natural world seems to also contribute to happiness, even when you're not physically immersed in nature.” – Dr. Sara DillWhat You'll LearnStats and studiesBreak lengthsImprovements and benefitsForest bathingIntentionally immersing in natureBring it in if you need toContact Info and Recommended ResourcesPodcast Episodes that pair well with this one:Creating Ease (AKA How to feel less stressed out)How to cultivate calmness by doing nothingConnect with Sara Dill, MD, The Doctor's CoachI read all my own emails and would love to hear from you. Not everything that's hard to do is necessarily bad for us. We know hard work, for example, is rewarding. Right? But it's also true that not everything that's hard to do is good for us either. Each has an underlying impact. Yet how do we differentiate between things that are hard but good, and things that are hard and bad? And why does it matter? As physicians, we encounter countless opportunities to steer our patients, as well as ourselves, toward “good” hard and away from “bad”. We do it regularly. It pours forth from who we are as healers. Because of this, I believe it is powerful to examine the characteristics of each type of “hard” more in depth, equipping us to help people even more. So let's talk about “good” hard versus “bad” hard.“Good hard is something that even though it's hard, even though it's difficult, even though it's challenging, the result is worth it.” – Dr. Sara DillWhat You'll LearnCharacteristics of “good” hardCharacteristics of “bad” hardEndurance and effortWorth it or notNourished versus depletedDrop the bad, choose the goodContact Info and Recommended ResourcesPodcast Episodes that pair well with this one:How to Say NoSome Myths About StressConnect with Sara Dill, MD, The Doctor's CoachI read all my own emails and would love to hear from you. Years ago, I used to believe I could give a human information, and they would make transformation. I would busy myself with consuming book after book, listening to revolutionary thing after revolutionary thing, because I “knew” if I just showed those humans where the juice was, they'd nourish themselves with it.It turns out, this is not the case… at all. Why? Because a human must also slow down to allow the connections to form in the brain. Information does not equal transformation.Something still seemed confusing in my mind, though. “Why?”I was telling the story that I made transformation by consuming information, completely ignoring the fact that I am an endurance athlete. I run long distances, and often slip into an Alpha brain wave state, which I maintain for long periods of time. This podcast is about different types of brainwaves, and how a human cannot create their reality from Beta brainwaves (where our logical, analytical, thinking mind lives.) I also tell some Punxy stories, because I got to go see the Groundhog last week for my Mom's 60th (she was born on Groundhog Day.)I hope if you're of the Western “do, do, do, do” variety, you'll take some time to give this a listen. If you do not get my emails, you can subscribe at breakfree.getthefuckoff.comIf you are interested in the wizardry that I do, check out my coaching page: https://www.getthefuckoff.com/coachingI accept tips for the GTFO podcast! After a recent conversation about ADHD with a family member, it dawned on me that this subject is not really discussed much in women and is typically considered a disorder in children, particularly boys. I started looking into ADHD in midlife women, and I was surprised to find that it goes largely undiagnosed in women and girls, as the signs are not as obvious as they are in males.Katy Weber, coach, author and podcaster, took her own diagnosis of adult ADHD to build a platform to support other women, who want to explore and understand who they are through this new lens of ADHD. She wants clients to lean into their strengths and use them to their advantage to move forward, to identify obstacles, and create strategies to live a more fulfilling and gratifying life. Not only does Katy Weber have a successful coaching business, but she has a very popular podcast called Women and ADHD.In this episode Katy and I discuss:- Her own journey to get to the diagnosis of ADHD- Deciding to do a podcast to help other women with ADHD- The differences between males and females in regard to signs of ADHD and eventual diagnosis- The impact of ADHD in adult women - relationships/work/dealing with everyday tasks- Executive Function and its definition- Medication and self-medicating - the importance of nutrition and movement- Our children with ADHD- What Katy has learned from her podcast guestsRecommended reading:Katy Weber wrote an excellent book on ditching diets and getting back to a whole food philosophy called Worth It: A Journey to Food & Body Freedom: Six Essential Steps to Ditching the Diets & Nourishing Your Body From the Inside OutA Radical Guide for Women with ADHD by Sari Solden MS, Michelle Frank PsyDThis is the workbook to which Katy refers in the podcast. Letting go can be hard. Even if we academically understand the validity and the health aspects behind releasing negativity and emotions, it can be difficult to put into practice. That's why it's extremely helpful to have some idea of step-by-step techniques and questions we can ask ourselves. In my personal journey to being a stress-less physician, I've learned an approach made popular by Lester Levenson based on Hale Dwoskin's book, The Sedona Method. The concept is to bring yourself to a place where you're not holding on so tightly to painful or unwanted feelings, whether in the moment you have them or later on as you reflect. This method has five approaches, and each works slightly differently but all can be useful. Although I'm not trained to teach the method, I hope that as I share an overview of it, you find the concept potentially beneficial to you.“What if feelings are actually just perpetuating the problems that they appear to be preventing? What if feelings are sometimes a lie?” – Dr. Sara DillWhat You'll LearnWhat The Sedona Method works onThe continuum of letting goShifting from heavy to lightFeelings sometimes lieEmotional ladderPitfalls to avoidStuck on the why4 questions to ask yourselfContact Info and Recommended ResourcesBook:The Sedona Method by Hale Dwoskin(Learn more about The Sedona Method with Lester Levenson) Podcast Episodes that pair well with this one:BoundariesImproving Your Relationships by minding your own businessLife is Short and Why This MattersConnect with Sara Dill, MD, The Doctor's CoachInterested in coaching? We spend a very large amount of time and energy concerned about the opinions of others. Perhaps too much. While it's important to be kind and take other people's feelings into consideration, if it causes us to constantly seek the approval of others, we may have a problem. So at what point are other people's opinions none of your business? Where do you draw the line that states your freedom will not be inhibited by the ever-changing thoughts of others? Let's talk about how to find and create that healthy boundary.“Giving people permission to not like you or approve of you or agree with you, can be so powerful. And notice how much freedom that gives you. Freedom to grow… and freedom to create a life that feels like your life, not someone else's life.” – Dr. Sara DillWhat You'll LearnManipulation of opinionsLetting go of trying to controlThoughts are temporaryLiving someone else's lifeBeing okay with people getting it wrongUnderstanding our need for acceptanceNot adding meaningContact Info and Recommended ResourcesInterested in coaching? You can teach a person how to do something until you're blue in the face... People won't do shit that is incongruent with their value systems.I KNOW.I know!I'm going to give you an example: Because I'm a coach I get solicitations from every business coach from here to Mumbai claiming to have the system that will be for sure the panacea to all of my possible money woes.Except... they won't be.Every system of something is going to work. Every system. But not every system will work for every person, because people act in accordance to their beliefs, and their beliefs are determined by their values. Often, those value systems were created by things outside of us, and we will not act incongruent with those systems. So, for example, if some shlup tells me the secret to building a coaching business is sending cold, copy/pasted DMs, I will not do it. Why? Because it is incongruent with the value system that I learned growing up.I have a belief that conversation should be personal, relatable, and authentic. Is this true? No! Conversation is cookie cutter all the fucking time. Half of your inbox is cold, cookie cutter bullshit some non-creative AI put together to sell you a new pair of jeans.Yet, I have a value system that opposes this strategy, so I will not do it. I will not do it at tremendous costs. You could tell me "send cold DMs for a week straight and you'll pay off alllllll of your school debt" and I'd be lettin' that shit go to default.Value systems are strong. The reason people don't make transformations is not because they don't know what to do. It's because of who they believe they are, and that belief being incongruent with the actions needed to be taken to achieve their desired result.I was having a business meeting just this past week with a colleague that is selling his coaching program for weight loss. He said to be "it's simple, you just need to create a calorie deficit."Except it's not that simple. People have layers and layers of identity attached to their eating behaviors. Macro systems like government have influenced the standard American diet since we were children. Then, money-making systems influenced the resulting overweight Americans to do random shit to their bodies in accordance with self-hate, not self love. There are actually grown ass women who try to meet the caloric needs of toddlers because of those systems. (1,200 calories. Coincidentally the people who try to do this are usually the heaviest. Meanwhile my happy ass eats 2,500)Because the aforementioned systems oppress women, the women begin to rebel against them.Call it good ol' American sovereignty. The value system that we will not be oppressed! AT ANY COST!Except there is a cost. These women end up rebelling against shit that we're naturally meant to do, like move our bodies.I had a client who was beginning intuitive eating, and said she was intuitively called to eat yogurt, but felt she shouldn't because yogurt is attached to diet culture. (Do you see this? Shit's strong.)It's all cyclical.I get a kick out of people on my Instagram telling people how much protein to eat, or posting those generic photos of their breakfasts on their stories.Motherfuckers don't care. If they have a belief that health is not for them, they will not align themselves with health. If they have a belief that your berries, eggs, and toast align with a system that left them feeling oppressed and less than, they're gonna reach for the Lucky Charms. Just like I won't send cold DMs for a quick buck.We do not have free will. We just think we do. BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS you can explore these beliefs in detail when you have someone to hold a mirror.I just had three one-on-one clients finish within the last month and a half, so I have space for new applicants. What do I do? Shit like this. Challenge your beliefs about who you are, and introduce to you the macro systems that may be responsible for why you hold your limiting beliefs. You can check out my coaching page here: https://www.getthefuckoff.com/coachingI have a form/application if you're interested in hearing more about what this looks like.I also still do power hours on Tuesdays and Friday's, and they're really useful for getting clarity in one area. Welcome to another episode of AMORTE where we talk about Death Education, holding a compassionate vision to help us navigate through loss and end of life care.Today our guest is Adriana Reid. She was born and raised in Mexico City and has resided in San Diego, CA since 2008. She has an MBA in Education, specialized in Family Counseling and Human Software Engineering. Any issues, challenges, problems in your life can benefit from this practice and this understandingWhat is it for you, what would like to apply this to?All of things I'm going to tell you today, you already know how to do and already possessAll of the things in you are like pieces of a puzzleAll grounded in your ability and practice of noticing, collecting evidence Your brain is essentially an evidence collecting machine, it spends all it's effort, using all your senses to prove things true - what is it proving true? YOUR OWN PERCEPTIONS AND BELIEFS Neuroplasticity, Science tells us that we are literally able to rewire our brains, if fact that we're doing that every moment of everyday - with or without your INTENTION Noticing, the evidence, shows what has the volume up, what's been turned down 3 ways to rewire your brain, starting today! A.I.D.1 - Attention - You deserve your attention Noticing the story There is such an incredible depth to every human being, but we are very quick to move out of our own experience for the promise of an outside version that is “better” We grow our inner capacity when we first notice and put our attention on what is already here.Paying attention to what is here? The thoughts The feelings The desire to not feel it or to not pay attention 2 - Intention - Intentionally rewiringWhether you know it or not, you are creating and reinforcing the neural networks in your mindRemembering why we practice anything - to be intentional about creating neuro networks 3 - De-programming - Doing the workNoticing: your thoughts, your body, your reactionsWe do so much in our lives and report it as if it were absolute truth, like it's the news What if you lived this way, each day? This episode has pragmatic ways to stop feeling like you're going through the motions. How you see the world - via your lens, your ideas - actually creates the world you see. So the quickest way to make things "happen" in the world is by changing them in ourselves! That's where growing your inner awareness and capacity to witness, identify and feel is so powerful and such a game changer. How do you shift your perspectives1 - Become aware of your perspectives What is going on right now, in this moment “Well, so much…” Choose one thing, and begin to become aware of the feelings in you2 - Be willing to look at and then question your thinking - Is it true? Are there other thoughts that could serve me more? What is the feeling right now3 - Be willing to feel - so much of what causes stress, anxiousness, is our inability or rather our unwillingness to to feel what is already happening in this moment Your feelings and paying attention, noticing are the quickest to drop into the moment and for the discomfort to begin to dissipatePete's Self kindness Coaching, click here or DM to connect with me about coachingI coach one-on-one, for either 3 or 6 months. We change your internal narrative intentionally from one that hurts to one that heals! What's also included : Connecting with other self kindness clients, accessing to the client portal loaded with resources to keep you going strong in your practice!!It's 1:1 coaching, with monthly group sessions, AND an online interface to with resources, worksheets, videos and more!click here or DM to connect with me about coaching@selfkindnesswithpetesign up for the email list at petesibley.com
This episode we're talking SPACE. I realized that in our deepening journeys, we're not really looking to end challenges and discomfort, but rather, looking to create and build the way to hold ANY suffering in your life. The aliveness in life comes from both the positive and negative, informing and creating our ability to BE and feel it all. Space and the acts of being intentional about the space in your life, is what is big enough, it's the way we as humans can hold it all, and continue to thrive! This episode has ways to practice holding the space for yourself.Pete's Self kindness Coaching, click here or DM to connect with me about coachingI coach one-on-one, for either 3 or 6 months.Get ready, because we change your internal narrative intentionally from one that hurts to one that heals!

Parenting comes down to 2 things: your mental health and your parent-child relationship. Mental health in motherhood takes a beating. Isolation and shame is a breeding ground for mental health disorders. Dr. Phillippa (Pip) Houghton is a family doctor on Vancouver Island, BC with a special interest in perinatal mental health. She is a mama to two boys and passionate about normalizing the motherhood experience, the good, the hard, and everything in between. In this episode, we cover the *red flags* to look out for, what keeps moms from seeking help for their mental health, and how we DON'T have to sugarcoat our bad days. The more comfortable we get in saying out loud "this stuff is hard" or "I don't always love the work of motherhood, even though I love my babies" the easier it will be for us to come together and support each other.// CONNECT WITH DR. The Adventure of CoachingI think most parents come into the world of coaching out of a love for their own kids and a desire to support them and provide well rounded learning experiences wrapped in fun. If we consider the world of grassroots soccer, by that I mean non competitive travel or select soccer, we see kids coming together from all backgrounds and skill sets - all out to make friends, become and stay active, learn some new skills, and have fun. Fun is the number one draw for kids into youth sports, and fun is what a lot of parents hope to provide. In this post, I'd like to talk about some of the stuff that's not talked about in coaching courses.I want to talk about the stuff we think about before we ever get to coaching courses. I want to talk about you and the stuff that can't be easily quantified. Before you step up for the first time, you might want to know: would I make a good coach? What's the time requirement? What if I fail and the kids don't like me? What if I don't know anything about the game? Will my kids accept me? How can I be a good coach? Would I Make a Good Coach?Obviously, this is very personal question. If you've never coached before, you probably don't know the answer. I came from a military background. There were not many kids in that environment. And I didn't start with the military until I was a bit older. 24 yrs old to be exact. I was the old man in training. Before that, I was in college with other college kids. I had my own business and I was making a lot of money for my age. I was having life experiences that were far removed from children and I was perfectly happy there. After the military, I went to work in corporate America. I climbed the ladder through middle management and into the C-Suite. I managed hundreds of employees, millions of dollars worth of projects, and had made all the kinds of transitions outlined so well in the book: The Leadership Pipeline: How to Build the Leadership Powered Company, by Ram Charan and Stephen Drotter. I was leader in those environments - but those environments were for adults. Kids to me were scary. I had no experience. I didn't have any great examples to draw from. And I thought I'd be really bad at dealing with them. When I had my own kids, I didn't have any choice anymore. Kids are kinda everywhere when you're a parent. You definitely can't avoid them - or all the bugs they bring home from daycare and school. Sickness on school cycles year after year was par for the course. Coaching kids when mine were really little was about the farthest thing from my mind. I was happy to get in a nap every so once in a while. When my kids expressed an interest in trying youth sports, I was a big fan. I swam, played hockey, lacrosse, soccer, ran track, wrestled, did gymnastics and martial arts in college... My memories of youth sports - working together as a team, pushing past weakness and discomfort, or even just putting one arm in front of the other for 4-8,000 yards twice per day every day with nothing but bubbles from another swimmer's kicking feet in front of me - those things, the perseverance, the teamwork, the sense of achievement after working hard - those things got me through many rough spots in life. I wanted that for my kids. When my kid's coach needed help, and I saw that the experience my kids were having would be better if I stepped up. I stepped up. I picked up the stop watch, tracked time, donned a title "Assistant Coach," and eventually managed the bench. In the early days, I struggled to remember my own experiences as a player - as if my experiences as a player would help me now as a coach. But I realized after a while, that playing and coaching are two very different things. Coaching requires organization. I had learned organization. Coaching requires good communication. I had learned communication. Coaching requires empathy and insight. I had learned empathy and insight. And Coaching required that I set aside my own ego,
