Fresh from the release of his book The Witch of Pungo: Grace Sherwood in Virginia, historian Scott O. Moore joins us to uncover the true story behind colonial Virginia's only witch trial. In 1706, Grace Sherwood faced an unusual trial by water—but what really happened, and why does it still captivate us today? Moore examines both the legend and reality of Grace Sherwood, showing how local tensions transformed neighborhood conflict into a witch trial. Learn how this singular case differed from the infamous Salem trials, and why Virginia Beach continues to grapple with Sherwood's legacy three centuries later. From ducking stools to modern-day memorials, this episode challenges what we think we know about witch trials in America, revealing how historical memory shapes—and sometimes distorts—our understanding of the past and present. Grace Sherwood, better known as The Witch of Pungo was the only person tried by “ducking” in Virginia. Ducking is when the accused is bound and thrown into a body of water. Join April, Harmony and Maggie as they explore two historical witches in North America. The first woman accused of being a witch in Salem, Massachussets in 1692 was Tituba, a slave woman. This launched one of the most famous witch hunts in history where twenty-five people were killed for being a witch. Ergot poisoning is the culprit to some of the visions that may have led to the witch accusations, which has a similar effect to the body as the modern day drug, LSD. Cotton Mather used the Malleus Maleficarum, The Witches Hammer, a book published in 1486 to discover who was a witch. Grace Sherwood, the witch of Pungo lived in the Virginia Beach area in the late 1600's. She was a midwife, cared for animals and had knowledge of herbs. She was accused of being a witch when her neighbor had a miscarriage. Grace was found to have two witch marks and was found guilty in a Colonial trial and sentenced to witch dunking. She wouldn't die after several attempts of dunking. She was kept in prison until 1714 and then was quietly released. Episode Notes Grace Sherwood was a midwife, a healer, and a widow. In colonial Virginia, this was a risky combination. As a result, a simple dispute with her neighbors soon put her reputation and her life in grave danger.

Welcome to the inaugural episode of The Stardust Sessions! In this Patreon-exclusive series, I'll be partnering with my good buddy and fellow Witchstorian Lozzie Stardust to dive into the fascinating events and people surrounding the history of witches and witchcraft. We'll talk about a whole lot of interesting things, maybe have a bit of a laugh, and hopefully tell you all some good stories along the way. In this episode, we discuss a Virginia legend - Grace Sherwood, the Witch of Pungo. Tried and ducked in a bay for her alleged crimes in 1706, Grace was the last person convicted of and imprisoned for witchcraft in the colony of Virginia before the 1735 Witchcraft Act was passed. But as Grace herself would have said, she was no witch. On Wednesday, July 10, 1706, scores of people arrived at what is now known as Witch Duck Point on the Lynnhaven River in Virginia. They were there to witness a unique but brutal legal proceeding that would never again be carried out in the colony of Virginia– the trial of forty-six-year-old Grace Sherwood by ducking. It is unknown exactly what happened when she hit the water, but what was clear to the folks who came that day was that Grace Sherwood survived and therefore she must be a witch. This week, we waste no time and jump right into a tale of a "witch" from the past known as "The Witch of Pungo". Hear about how this "witch" was discovered, how she survived all of the "witch tests" she was put through, how she ultimately survived all the trials and tribulations thrown at her throughout her life, and how her name was more recently cleared posthumously hundreds of years after her death. Plus, we talk about some phantom horns we heard recently while outside and wonder if anyone else has heard these strange horn/trumpet sounds. Ever been to a plantation and feel like something was just a little bit off? Not sure if its the history of the place, the knowledge of what happened there, or something more on the spooky side? In this episode, Zoey goes over the Ferry Plantation of Virginia Beach and the 11 spirits that are said to reside there.Included in those 11 spirits is the ghost of Grace Sherwood, better known as the Witch of Pungo, who was posthumously cleared of her magic crimes. She was tried in the building and in the waters near the Ferry Plantation house, and her ghost is seen wandering the feilds.A lot of spooks with a side helping of serious discussion, and you can say that there is something just a little bit off about the Ferry Plantation. But before we get into that, Robin and Zoey sample some beignets from Cafe du Monde, LA, sent over from Robin's family. Please note, if you can not handle the sounds of eating, you should probably skip the first 6 or 7 minutes of this episode.Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2022/01/11/ep-42-the-11-ghosts-at-the-ferry-plantation/
Culture swings on a pendulum between two extremes, and the enemy is very adept at using these extremes to his advantage. He is masterful at hiding our vices, and using a complementary virtue to reinforce what is our greatest area of weakness, as a culture and as individuals. In this episode, Catherine shows how culture how ebbs and flows between these two extremes throughout history. Then she identifies what is the greatest virtue of our culture and how the enemy is using that virtue to lead us astray. Resources mentioned: The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Spooky season isn't over for the THRE3 of us! In episode 51 we discuss the tale of Grace Sherwood, and how she gained her reputation as The Witch of Pungo in our hometown.
Let's go back to the early 1700s as we talk about the last convicted witch in Virginia.
Welcome to season 2, episode 1 of Serial Nightmare, a special spooky series I like to do every year just for the month of October. All of my episodes this month will have more of a spooky feel, but I will definitely be adding a dash of true crime content to each! What could be more spooky than one of the most famous witches of all time? Grace Sherwood, also known as the Witch of Pungo, was accused of killing livestock, bewitching married men and transforming into animals. Grace denied being a witch, but there was pretty much no way a woman at the time could prove otherwise. Her community thought they could make the final determination through an act known as “ducking”, which would kill most women who had gone through the ritual before. But by some miracle, Grace survived, which should have proved to everyone that she wasn't a witch afterall. Unfortunately it wouldn't be so simple. And the moment that humankind first touched foot on the moon.

Alpheus Chewning is a Virginia Beach author, folklorist, ghost-walk guide, and living historian with a focus on Chesapeake Bay pirates, the Civil War, & regional hauntings. In this episode we get a taste of what it would have been like aboard a pirate ship during the Golden Age of Piracy [1680 - 1730]. We learn about their egalitarian ethics, ship contracts & recruitment; what they ate; how they slept; using the bathroom; their clothing; flag pictograms & symbolism; superstitions & common phrases; the dividing of treasure; and of course, their brutal yet creative guerrilla battle tactics. When it comes to story time, Al recounts the tale of Blackbeard's curse upon the legendary treasure buried at today's First Landing State Park. His second story, which also blends history & folklore & dates to the early 18th century, is a potent parable about a beautiful & eccentric animal-whisperer/plant healer who was accused of being a witch by her neighbors. The last third of the episode is dedicated to local hauntings: ghosts' participation in a Civil War reenactment; a profound theory about past lives, & more. From the first colonist ships, to Indian graves & pirate battles, we end back at the storied First Landing State Park as Al speaks of his paranormal investigation of a young woman's ghost. Pirates, witches, and ghosts, this episode is beach campfire gold! "Grace Sherwood: the Witch of Pungo"-The true story of Virginia's Grace Sherwood, who was the last person to be tried and convicted as a witch in the state of Virginia. Her accusers were many, and while her husband lived they both went to court often to try to defend their reputation and name. She was a midwife and healer, and sometimes the line of demarcation between "healer" and "witch" was hard for people to understand in the age of superstition. On this week’s episode of The Farm Report, host Erin Fairbanks speaks with Bill Savage, owner of Pungo Creek Mills in Painter, Virginia. In 2007, Bill purchased a bushel of Indian corn from a man whose grandfather had been growing it since 1870 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. After considering marketing the Indian corn for cornamental purposes, he and his father realized when grinding the corn that it made a unique, sweet-smelling cornmeal. After trying the cornmeal, his family decided that this would be the route he would take with marketing and Pungo Creek Mills was born. Hear directly from the farmer himself who runs his small business, and believes that the traditional ways of making corn, equals better tasting corn. Find out how you can receive Bill’s great tasting corn in your home or market today! This program has been sponsored by Cain Vineyard & Winery. Music by Idgy Dean. source: http://www.pungocreekmills.net/ “It’s nice to keep that small farm dream alive. If you put your heart into it, you come out with a product that’s a whole lot better than the others that use mechanization.” [13:10] “I’d rather do a lot of small batches than a lot of big ones. It helps me keep a handle on the market.” [31:10] — Bill Savage on The Farm Report
