Escape From Vault Disney

It's the ludicrously-belated fifth and final episode of WHAT WOULD WALT HAVE DONE? "MONTH" on Escape From Vault Disney! And to wrap up this batch of episodes on the most awkward time period in Disney history, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1976 to cover an example of Disney's most reliably lucrative (or at least, least reliably un-lucrative) genre at the time, the dumb-as-rocks slapstick-heavy live-action comedy! And what a comedy it was, assembling more exclamation-point-worthy TV stars than a primetime variety special - Ed Asner! Don Knotts! Tim Conway! Tom Bosley! Bob Crane! Dick Van Patten! Dick Butkus! The Guy Who Voiced The Cat From Outer Space! - and then casting them all in a motion picture where the REAL star is a dumb mule who somehow gets drafted as an NFL placekicker through the use of Air Bud logic twenty years before Air Bud. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we're maintaining course on our dark path down creepy 70's  sci fi as we explore two trailblazers in the world of robotics and AI: 1973's Westworld starring Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin, James Brolin, Dick Van Patten, Steve Franken and Star Trek's Majel Barrett  up against 1975's The Stepford Wives starring Katherine Ross, Paula Prentiss, Peter Masterson, Tina Louise, Nanette Newman and a whole slew of middle aged men to prove that men can design women better than anybody.  My guests today are series regulars, David Johnson, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson.  Before we roll, the synopses:  Set in a disturbingly near future, Westworld transports rich and lonely swinging singles Peter Martin and John Blane into a theme park /resort called Westworld populated by incredibly life like robots, including a black clad Gunslinger,  who inhabit an 1880's  Western town and are there to be shot, fought and screwed to the whims and pleasure  of the resort's guests. But when the robots start to malfunction and go on a rampage against all humans, guess who feels really stupid?  The Stepford Wives tells of the Eberharts, Walter and Johanna and their two daughters who escape the rat race of Manhattan and move to idyllic suburban town of Stepford, Connecticut. It's a perfect suburban dream for Walter but it turns out to be a nightmare for Joanna when she finds out that all the women are subservient, hard cleaning, perfectly domesticated sex objects for their husbands. The reason?  (Spoiler Alert!) THEY'VE BEEN TURNED INTO ROBOTS! Which robot movie wins?Find out!

And his son skateboards. This movie's got it all - pie fights, roller derby, a man in a dog suit punching Dick Van Patten in the face - and Kevin and Mike dive into its many delights, Disney's live-action films from this era, and Mike's childhood belief that D.A. stood for "duck's ass."  With the sugary Fruit Loops of Summer movie fare already upon us, this week on Fabulous Film & Friends we are going to fortify our intellectual palate with some meaty, heavy-duty late 60's early/70's sci fi and compare Franklin Schaffner's 1968 masterpiece Planet of The Apes, starring Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowell, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, Linda Harrison and James Whitmore with Richard Fleischer's 1973 downbeat detective story Soylent Green  also starring Mr. Heston, along with Edward G. Robinson, Leigh Taylor-Young, Brock Peters, Chuck Connors and Dick Van Patten in a role he was born to play as a  weaselly usher in a walk in euthanasia center.  Joining me as we venture down this dark path of 70's dystopia are series regulars David Johnson D.M.D, Roseanne Caputi, author, producer and NY resident George Young and the mighty Gordon Alex Robertson. But before we take the first bite: the synopses. Planet of the Apes centers around George Taylor, an astronaut on a deep space voyage whose mission entails returning to Earth 2000 years after the launch of the spacecraft. The vessel crash lands on what seems to be a far off planet inhabited by by dumb and mute humans who are ruled by intelligent but brutal talking apes. Taylor is captured by the apes and shot in the throat making him unable to talk, but when his larynx heals, he lets out the immortal line, “Get your paws off of me you damned dirty ape!” What follows is a tug of war over the perceived intelligence and fading dominance of mankind, leading Taylor to discover the shocking truth of his predicament on the planet.  Soylent Green takes place in what was once the future, the year 2022 where in a poisoned world with very little food and clean water, much of the overpopulated humanity living in squalid apartments and packed shoulder to shoulder, sleeping on stairwells, feeds on a government issued allegedly plankton-based food product called Soylent Green. Scuffling and sweaty Detective Robert Thorn is assigned a murder case where a wealthy power master named William Simonson was assassinated. Thorn follows a trail of murderous clues that lead him to the discovery of the exact nature Soylent Green itself.

The North American Friends Movie Club

Brent, Kate, and Nate launch blast off with the hilarious 1987 American space opera parody film Spaceballs starring: Mel Brooks, Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner, Michael Winslow, Joan Rivers, Lorene Yarnell, John Hurt, Sal Viscuso, Ronny Graham, Jim J. Bullock, Leslie Bevis, Rudy De Luca, Stephen Tobolowsky, Dom DeLuise, Rick Ducommun, Sandy Helberg, Dey Young, Jim Jackman, Jack Riley, and Terence Marsh."Spaceballs" received mixed reviews from critics upon its release in 1987. While some praised its humor and clever parodies of science fiction films, others criticized it for being too silly and lacking substance. In his review for The New York Times, Vincent Canby wrote, "The movie is so desperate for laughs that it's willing to try anything, no matter how feeble or obvious." Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times also criticized the film, saying, "I would have been grateful for some consistency, some sense that they knew where the joke was and were headed for it." However, other critics such as Hal Hinson of The Washington Post praised the film's irreverent take on the sci-fi genre, writing, "Brooks has constructed a brilliantly dumb, visually dazzling satire that manages to send up all the major science-fiction films of the past decade while simultaneously lampooning our own." In addition to mixed reviews from critics, "Spaceballs" also faced some challenges during its production. The film had a relatively modest budget of $22.7 million, and faced competition from several other high-profile releases that summer, including "RoboCop" and "The Witches of Eastwick." Additionally, some of the film's jokes and references were considered too obscure for mainstream audiences, and many viewers may have missed some of the film's more subtle nods to classic sci-fi movies. Despite these challenges, "Spaceballs" managed to find an enthusiastic fanbase over time, with many viewers appreciating the film's over-the-top humor, memorable characters, and quotable one-liners. Today, the film is considered a cult classic and a testament to Mel Brooks' enduring legacy as a master of parody and satire. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 19, 2021 43:15

It may not be surprising that the self-titled debut album from Foreigner was a hit, since all the members had previously worked with successful acts, making this collaboration a bit of a supergroup.  British guitarist and songwriter Mick Jones came from Spooky Tooth.  Multi-instrumentalist and fellow Brit Ian McDonalds had played in King Crimson.  They were joined by another Englishman, drummer  Dennis Elliott (from Ferris Wheel and The Roy Young Band).  Other members were American, including Al Greenwood on keyboards, Ed Gagliardi on bass, and Lou Gramm on vocals.  The band had the name Trigger for their demo tapes, but swapped that name out when they found another band had already taken it.  The name Foreigner was suggested by Mick Jones, because with three English members and three American members, at least half the band would be foreigners — wherever they played. The debut album Foreigner would create three hit singles and would be certified 5x platinum in the US, the first of four albums (this one, Double Vision, Head Games, and 4) from the group to achieve such a high level of success.Foreigner would prove to be one of the biggest bands of the late 70's through the 80's.  Lou Gramm would split from the group in the 1990, return in 1992, and leave again in 2003.  Foreigner still tours today, but Mick Jones is the sole original member of the group. Feels Like the First TimeThe leading track and first single released would be the first hit by the group, reaching number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Mick Jones wrote this track prior to the start of Foreigner, when he had met a new love after this previous marriage dissolved.  It was a feeling that his life was entering a new phase. I Need YouThis song concludes the album and is a deeper cut with great bass licks and chord progressions.  "Many is the time I've cursed the Lord's creations.  Ah, but you touched my hand, I loved this new sensation."StarriderAnother deeper cut with more prominent keyboards, this one features Mick Jones on lead vocals.  The song reminds us of "Crystal Ball" by Styx.  You might agree it has a medieval or fantasy feel.  Long, Long Way from HomeThe third single from the album gives the perspective of a person moving from a small town to a large city, and the loneliness that results.   Lou Gramm has said this song is autobiographical, reflecting his move from Rochester, New York to New York City.  "I was inside looking outside.  Oh, the millions of faces, but still I'm alone." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Eight Is Enough”The family drama starring Dick Van Patten would debut in March of 1977.  It was about a single father raising eight kids. STAFF PICKS:Year of the Cat by Al StewartBrian opens our staff picks with a haunting tune.  The song originated from a riff piano player Tim Renwick would play before concerts.  Many of the lyrics were inspired from watching the movie Casablanca.  The title comes from a Vietnamese calendar which indicated that 1975 was the Year of the Cat.Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes by Jimmy BuffettWayne brings us one of the standard songs of summer.  The song itself barely cracked the top 40, but has taken on a timelessness with more than just the "Parrot Heads" that attend multiple Buffett concerts.  "With all of our running and all of our cunning, if we couldn't laugh we would all go insane."Georgia Rhythm by the Atlanta Rhythm SectionBruce features a local Atlanta band who was big in 1977.  The Atlanta Rhythm Section was formed from former members of the Candymen and the Classics IV who had come to Atlanta as the session band for Studio One in Doraville in 1970.  This song is off their sixth studio album, and the first album to get significant airplay.  The big hit was "So Into You," but "Georgia Rhythm" got a lot of airplay in Atlanta for obvious reasons.Maybe I'm Amazed (live) by Paul McCartney & WingsRob  wraps up the staff picks with a song originally recorded in 1970 for McCartney's first album, but never released as a single.  This live version was released in February 1977. This touching song was inspired by his romance with his wife, Linda.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Fanfare for the Common Man by Emerson, Lake & PalmerThis was originally written by Aaron Copeland in response to America's entry into the Second World War.  The ELP version came about when Emerson was playing the piece on keyboards.  Greg Lake came in with a shuffle pattern on bass, and Palmer added in the drums.  The engineer was rolling tape and the first time the band played the song through is what made the album.

Fan of the show, and one of our favorite people, Michael, requested we watch the movie 7 Days To Vegas on Prime Video.  Mike is a former Angelino, Vegas resident and pro gambler, so we knew he would like a movie about a poker player who takes a prop bet to walk from L.A. to Vegas. But would we like it?Not only did we like it, but in researching the movie, we fell deep into the Van Patten rabbit hole that continued as a 6 degrees of separation through-line for the entire show. We hope you were able to keep up!The movie stars Vince Van Patten, his brother James Van Patten, his real-life wife Eileen Davidson (soap opera legend and Real Housewife of Beverly Hills), and has a cameo from his brother Nels Van Patten.Vince's dad is the veteran actor Dick Van Patten, his aunt is actress Joyce Van Patten. His uncle is producer/director of Perry Mason, Timothy Van Patten. And his cousin is Talia Balsam, daughter of his Aunt Joyce and the celebrated actor Martin Balsam. Talia is the ex-wife of George Clooney and the current wife of John Slattery, who worked, of course, with Rich Sommer on Mad Men, which we'll get to later. It's more about the prop bet than the poker table7 Days to Vegas is a fun, easy movie about a crazy "prop bet" between a down and out actor and a douche-bag director and the crew of degenerate gamblers they play with. Poker players and gamblers will like it. Anyone who has lived on the fringes of Hollywood will recognize the characters as guys we all know. Vimeo describes it as "an edgy comedy based on the true story of the rise and fall of one of Hollywood's biggest poker games. The names have been changed to protect the guilty."We're not sure how much is true, but we know the bet was real because Vince van Patten was the guy who took the gamble. We know first hand that the depiction of the Hollywood private poker scene is spot on. And we know the Van Patten's have been a gambling family for generations. There's a lot of truth in this movie and in it's characters. It never does reach it's potential in our opinion only because we know people just like the ones in this movie, and they are a rich source for comedy, but 7 Days To Vegas is still worth the ride.If you're looking for a feel-good, (The Hangover for guys over 40) 92-minute break from the crazy, check it out on Prime or Vimeo for rent or free on Tubi and Sling.Big thanks to Mike for the recommendation!

Maybe you weren't lucky enough to hear their epic 2019 episode about Lifetime's The Wrong Neighbor before it inexplicably went missing from podcast platforms and all of their computers. But it never went missing from their hearts, and the guys are now able to look at it with much greater context about the Wrong Cinematic Universe. But before they can even dive in, they discuss Andy Warhol's autobiography, the apparent swingin' sex lives of Dick Van Patten and Gene Siskel, The Forbes story about The Bold and The Beautiful's plans to use lifelike sex dolls to help film, and Blac Chyna's plans to collaborate with Nicki Minaj. With all that amazingness out of the way, even though we DON'T get to see Vivica A Fox, Eric Roberts, or (critically) Tracy Nelson, we DO get to (eventually) see Michael Madsen pre-lunch and post-lunch. We also get to see the producer's girlfriend, a security expert that has no idea what a tax attorney does (or possibly a chiropractor), and a newly discovered Lifetime trope of getting gussied up to visit a food truck. Westworld (1973) 1973, Michael Crichton would write and direct Westworld which would start the rise of his writing career.  The American Science Fiction Western film would be about an amusement park of androids that would malfunction and start to kill the visitors.    The film stars James Brolin, Dick Van Patten, Richard Benjamin and the fantastically cast Yul Brynner.  The film would set box offices alit and create one sequel called Futureworld and a 1980’s short lived television series Beyond Westworld.  The film would come to modern audiences again in the new HBO series which is considered one of the icons of modern television.   The Shawshank Redemption (1994)   Released in 1994 to critical acclaimed and based on a short novella by Stephen King and directed by Frank Darabont, tells the tale of a prisoner sent to Shawshank for the murder of his wife and her lover although he claims his innocence.  Over the next two decades he would befriend a fellow prisoner, Ellis "Red" Redding and becomes instrumental in a money laundering scheme set up by the prison warden. The film stars Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, William Sandler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows and James Whitmore. Initially released as a box office failure, the film would go on to gain a cult following and would end up becoming the number one VHS rental film after award nominations and word of mouth.  It is now considered one of the best films of the 1990's.   We have been shortlisted for a Rondo award.  You can vote via their website:  https://rondoaward.com/rondoaward.com/blog.  Or you can vote via e-mail:  taraco@aol.com.  If you just want to vote for the Literary License Podcast, just cut and paste the following into your e-mail:   Best Multimedia Site:  Literary License Podcast.    Opening Credits; Introduction – Rose and Thorn of the Week (1.32); Forming the Plot (08.33); Film Trailer (10.52);  Lights, Camera, Action (13.34); Forming The Plot (Take 2) (46.37); Trailer (Take 2) (49.32); Lights, Camera, Action (Take 2) (51.40); Epilogue (1:28.37); End Credits (1:32.44); Closing Credits (1:34.47)   Opening and Closing Credits – thanking BenSounds for our fantastic Opening and Closing Credits.

Vince Van Patten is a man of many talents. The son of legendary actor Dick Van Patten got his start as a child, appearing in numerous commercials, as well as TV shows and movies such as Bonanza, Baywatch, The Six Million Dollar Man, Hell Night, and The Break. Despite being introduced to gambling at a young age by his father, Van Patten ultimately dedicated himself to tennis, and won the ATP Rookie of the Year award. In 1981, he even beat John McEnroe to win the Seiko World Super Tennis Tournament in Tokyo, reaching a peak of no. 26 in the world.  After his tennis career was over, Van Patten returned to Los Angeles to continue acting, as well play host to some of Hollywood's biggest home poker games. His experience with the game and his time in front of a camera made Van Patten a natural choice for the World Series of Poker in 1998, and when the World Poker Tour made its debut in 2002, he was hired alongside Mike Sexton as commentator. Van Patten is now sharing the duties with poker pro Tony Dunst, and is in the middle of his 18th season on tour.  Van Patten's most recent project is a gambling movie that he co-wrote and stars in called 7 Days To Vegas. The film focuses on a group of poker players who will bet on anyone and anything. As the prop bets get bigger and bigger, Van Patten's character agrees to attempt to walk from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, in under seven days, while wearing a suit. The film is available now on demand through Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, and more.  Highlights from this interview include 600 drives to Vegas, selling toothpaste as a child actor, his slow start in tennis, fighting for a top ranking and beating John McEnroe, Dick Van Patten the smart gambling degenerate, learning poker at age 8, running three-card monte games in seventh grade, fake beards and mustaches, scraping up $5 of fountain change for gas money, his new movie 7 Days To Vegas, Hollywood home games with Jerry Van Dyke, John Huston, Ben Affleck, and Tobey Maguire, winning some teeth in a poker game, calling Scotty Nguyen's WSOP win, how he got the WPT gig, dodging the cigar murderers, a three-day poker session, a sketchy game on the Mexican border, bear encounters at Yosemite, and trips to the racetrack with Mel Brooks.

There are many problems in the world. Luckily we have Simon Kaufman to solve them all for us on stage. Simon Kaufman's performances are a form of social commentary on society. Taking a stoic philosophical viewpoint towards his life, Simon's stand up act is like an orator standing in the Forum of Ancient Rome using his humor as a means of speaking to his fellow countrymen.  Growing up in a Jewish home in an inner city neighborhood has given rise to a very unique comedy style that people fall in love with. Being the only white guy on many of his little league sports teams has left Simon with a rich understanding of all aspects of the American spectrum that few get to have. From the city to the country Simon's jokes appeal to everybody. Simon Kaufman is a 4th generation comedic actor tracing his roots back to vaudeville, Yiddish theater, and the early days of Broadway. It's the family business. He’s appeared on The Millionaire Matchmaker on the Bravo Channel, The TV show “The 206”, and the movie Silver Skies with George Hamilton and Dick Van Patten. His comedy is cerebral but not stuffy and therefore works for all types of audiences. His act is about the chaos of life, the over consumption of modern times, and societies lack of common sense. .www.simonkaufman.com www.facebook.com/SimonKaufmanComedy  @simonkaufman Your host, Jim Kellner is a Certified Hypnotherapist & Comedy Stage Hypnotist. Betty Buckley is a Tony award winning singer and actress. Best known to theatergoers for playing Grizabella in the original Broadway cast of Cats (for which she won the Tony in 1983) and for starring as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard both in London and New York, she's also appeared on Broadway in 1776, Pippin, Carrie, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Triumph of Love. She made her big screen debut in the Brian de Palma film Carrie before going to star in Eight is Enough for four seasons on ABC. Other film and TV roles include: Tender Mercies, Roman Polanski's Frantic, Woody Allen's Another Woman and a reoccurring role in the HBO series Oz. To date, Betty has recorded 16 solo albums. Her most recent Ghostlight was produced by T. Bone Burnett. In 2012, she was inducted in to the American Theater Hall of Fame. In this conversation, Betty looks back at her film and theater career, revealing the moment she knew she could act, the nights she felt most embraced by an audience, and how she always knew she would do her best work in her later years. She talks about what she learned from the late Dick Van Patten while shooting Eight is Enough, dealing with the shock of his death and how the challenges and losses we endure in life prove to be profound lessons in disguise that are designed to help us grow. Plus-- what was like working on her most recent album Ghostlight with T. Bone Burnett, how she's preparing for the Hamptons' first production of Grey Gardens: The Musical at Bay Street Theater, and why a recent riding accident means she won't have to act when she plays Big Edie.

Over the years we were lucky enough to talk to him on several occasions. In his memory we have two segments from two different interviews with him. One from 1997 and the other from 2004. Actress Carolyn Hennesy is one of the most talented people working on the small screen today. She is best known as mob lawyer, Diane Miller on General Hospital. But lately she has also been devouring the role as Penelope Ellis on the ABC series, Revenge. It's a portrayal that is certainly Emmy worthy. You can take a look at her Emmy reel here. "We aren't dealing with ordinary machines. These are highly complicated pieces of equipment, almost as complicated as living organisms. In some cases they've been designed by other computers. We don't know exactly how they work." And so begins the downfall of the DELOS vacation resort, because the machines, they have a mind of their own and they intend to use they're new found sentience. Bob and I play a game of connect the dots between Westworld, The Terminator, Blade Runner and Austin Powers. Wait, what? Austin Powers! Yes! Austin Powers? Just wait for it, you'll understand. Released in 1973 by MGM, written and directed by Michael Crichton, and starting Yul Brynner, Richard Benjaman, James Brolin, Alan Oppenheimer, Dick Van Patten, and Linda Gaye Scott, "Westworld" is in many ways the forerunner to the modern "machines take over the world and wipeout all humankind" thriller. There are many original ideas contained in the film and some derivative ideas (see notes below). Overall we like it, but we have some issues with it as well.

This high-energy conversation tells the story of an ambitious kid with zero show business “connections” who became one of Hollywood’s most prolific and successful television movie producers: Bruce Sallan.     Bruce’s inspiring story takes us from a film class at UCLA and into pitch meetings at the major television networks...then into casting sessions at Hollywood’s biggest studios...and on to film locations around the world with some of the biggest celebrity stars of our time.      With more than 24 major television movies to his credit—all inspired by his personal commitment to telling the best stories with a redeeming social value—Bruce enjoyed a remarkable 25-year career on the highest rungs of the Hollywood ladder.  He’s one of those rare talents who moved easily between high-level jobs at production companies, movie studios, and television networks.      In this rapid-fire, free-wheeling conversation, Bruce doesn’t pull any punches as he recalls his work with stars like Bruce Dern, Barbara Hershey, Alan Arkin, Don Johnson, John Forsythe, Dick Van Patten, Betty White, Ron Howard, Mickey Rourke, Lindsay Wagner...and the list goes on!     Bruce Sallan delivers more than just anecdotes here; he talks about the actual “how to” of a Hollywood career, what it takes to really pitch and sell a hot TV project, and how to navigate the treacherous politics of any show business career.     The conversation then turns to Bruce’s dynamic career as an author (The Empty-Nest Road Trip Blues and A Dad’s Point-of-View: We ARE Half the Equation), a nationally-syndicated newspaper columnist, the recognized and outspoken advocate for fatherhood, a leading social media icon, the creator of one of Twitter’s  #DadChat where his weekly “all about dad” Tweet Chat draws thousands of weekly followers.     As the father of two sons, a seasoned and expert skier and unmatched raconteur, Bruce Sallan is uniquely gifted communicator with a great message to share...and he shares it with unmatched intelligence and energy.  This is a conversation NOT to be missed!
