On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss the long-awaited roll out of Apple CarPlay Ultra and Samsung's all-new S25 Edge, which is positioned to rival the iPhone 17 Air later this year. Apple this week announced CarPlay Ultra, its next-generation CarPlay experience. CarPlay Ultra fully extends across all of the vehicle's display, including the instrument cluster. It provides access to real-time vehicle data, supports iPhonewidgets, theme options, instrument cluster display customizations, and introduces integrations for vehicle functions. CarPlay Ultra is available first in new Aston Martin models in North America. Existing Aston Martin vehicles will also support CarPlay Ultra through forthcoming software updates. Looking ahead, Apple says it has secured commitments from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis to bring CarPlay Ultra to their vehicles in the coming year. Other automakers are expected to follow. In other news, Samsung this week announced the Galaxy S25 Edge — a device clearly designed to undercut the iPhone 17 Air's expected appeal, with both smartphones aiming to be the thinnest in their respective ecosystems. The Galaxy S25 Edge sports a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, a titanium frame, and a remarkably slim 5.8mm profile, weighing in at just 163 grams. It features a dual-lens camera system, including a 200MP wide-angle sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide camera, supported by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. Samsung is also pushing its AI credentials with features like Drawing Assist and Audio Eraser. In contrast, the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be even thinner at just 5.5mm, making it Apple's slimmest iPhone ever. It is expected to feature a 6.6-inch OLED display with ProMotion. Apple is said to be removing the ultra-wide camera entirely and opting for a single 48MP wide camera, removing the SIM card tray, and the secondary stereo speaker to save internal space. Other expected specifications include a 24MP front-facing camera, 12GB of RAM, and the A19 chip. While the iPhone 17 Air may win the title of thinnest flagship, it could come with a major compromise: battery life. According to internal testing leaks, only 60–70% of users are expected to get through a full day on a single charge — a notable drop from the 80–90% seen with other recent iPhone models. Apple is reportedly using a higher-density battery and its custom C1 modem to squeeze as much efficiency as possible into the super-thin design. To address this, Apple is reportedly developing a new USB-C battery case, designed to extend the iPhone 17 Air's runtime. The accessory could launch alongside the device to help mitigate negative perceptions around longevity

Was ist also die ideale Kamera?
The Canon EOS R3 looks to be a beast of a camera. Like so many others, I want this camera, and like 99% of those people I won't be buying one. Why? Because the Canon EOS R3 is for people like Jeff Cable. Ok, also because it's more than I can afford for what I shoot, and yes, I would buy it in an instant if I could, but for now I am sticking with the not buying it. So, why do I say it's for people like Jeff Cable? Jeff is the market this camera is made for. I won't go through all the specs here, but let's just say that when you are photographing the Olympics for Team USA you cant miss the shot. We knew Jeff was using an R3 at the Olympics, it was semi-public knowledge. Plus, Jeff was posting images to his blog and Instagram, and as DPReview mentioned here, some Canon Rumors forum members checked Jeff's meta data where they saw was something that had not been revealed by Canon, that the R3 was 24MP. When I saw Jeff mention on Instagram that he was shooting at the Olympics at 30 fps my brain stopped for a moment. That instantly meant he was using the electronic shutter... FOR SPORTS. This has usually be something to avoid due to rolling shutter effect. If you are not familiar with that issue, here's a great video by the legend David Bergman on his Ask David Bergman: Mechanical vs Electronic Shutter. I asked Jeff in an Instagram comment about using electronic shutter for sports, and his response was a cryptic "it depends what body" he is using. Ah Ha! The R3 solved the issue! It has a fast enough read speed to shoot 30fps for action, and that is amazing. I asked Jeff that day if he might be willing to come back on the show - he was on before on the episode Capture the Action - to talk about his real world experiences with this new Canon R3. Luckily he said yes, and he even wrote a blog post about it too: Finally - my real world review of the new Canon R3 camera! Now that we have the idea where this show might go, let me introduce you to my friend Jeff Cable... Photographing the Olympics has got to be the pinnacle of a sports photographer's career, and for Jeff Cable it's one he's reached many times, having photographed the last 7 Olympics for Team USA. I am always amazed by how many photographers either come from, or are in some way involved with, the tech industry. For more than 25 years, Jeff was a marketing executive at companies like Symantec, Magellan, and Micron, but while traveling the world for his corporate job, his interest and passion for photography grew quickly. He left the corporate world in 2016 to dedicate himself full-time to his photography. Since then, Jeff has earned respect around the globe for his creative images, and for sharing his love of photography with others. He's best known for capturing photos for the US Olympic Committee, photographing the last six Olympic games, in Beijing, Vancouver, London, Sochi, Rio de Janeiro, and PyeongChang. As an educator, Jeff also leads photo tours where he teaches photo enthusiasts and professionals around the world. He has taught in Africa, Australia, China, Europe, Central and South America, and across the United States. He is one of the most watched and respected instructors of photography, with millions of views of his free online photography classes. Join me as I chat with Jeff Cable, one of the most accomplished sports photographers working today, about his real world experience at this year's Olympics with a pre-production Canon EOS R3, on this episode of Behind the Shot. This is The Digital Story Podcast #782, March 16, 2021. Today's theme is "Do I Really Need All Those Photo Subscriptions?" I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue A reminder for my upcoming SmugMug subscription renewal arrived yesterday saying that I could lock-in the low rate of $85 if I pay for an entire year. Since the pandemic, I haven't used SmugMug once because I'm not doing client shoots. And it got me thinking about the rest of my annual charges. I think it's time to take stock of all my photo sharing subscriptions. And that's the focus of today's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show. Digital Photography Podcast 782 Tune-In Via Your Favorite Podcast App! Apple Podcasts -- Spotify Podcasts -- Stitcher Podbean Podcasts -- Podbay FM -- Tune In Do I Really Need All Those Photo Subscriptions? I think part of what I had to deal with concerning this project was acknowledging that I'm not the same photographer I was at the beginning of 2020. Most of my assignments are created by me for my blog posts, LinkedIn Learning trainings, Medium articles, and workshops. I really don't need models anymore because I still can't interact with them, and I don't need sites to manage online galleries for those models and clients. Things have really changed. And the SmugMug renewal notice brought all of this home. So here's what I've been working on. The subscriptions I've decided to discontinue, I've been downloading all of my content off them in preparation to end the service. I had to start this ahead of time to allow the days required to ensure I got everything. Looking back over the last 10 years of work, I was amazed at how much content I had online. With SmugMug, for example, it was gallery after gallery that I downloaded. But I did so one at a time so I could organize the work on my backup hard drive. I just chip away at it while working on other projects. So, what did I keep, and what did I let go? Let's take a look. SmugMug - Let Go $85 a year - I really like SmugMug, and it was my go-to service for client password-protected galleries. Their organization, features list, and rendering are terrific. But I just don't do that work anymore, and it doesn't make sense to pay them $85 a year to archive that content. I've moved it all offline on to my backup hard drives. Flicker Pro - Keep $59 a year - Fortunately, SmugMug bought Flickr, so they still get some of my money. I'm keeping Flickr because it's cheaper, more versatile, and I have a deeper history of images there. Plus, we have the TDS Online Community on Flickr that I love, and draw images from for the TDS Member Photo of the Day. Flickr stays. (You might want to check out The Digital Story Public Group on Flickr where we have more than 80,000 images by TDS members. It's great!) Adobe Photography Plan (20GB) - Keep $9.99 a month - I like Lightroom and love having access to the latest Adobe photography features with this plan. I don't keep it for the storage, rather for the apps. And I appreciate them keeping the price stable over the years. Model Mayhem - Let Go $35 every 6 months - I have met many terrific people via Model Mayhem and hundreds of wonderful photographs have resulted. But again, my life is different now. I ended my subscription. Dropbox Plus 2TB - Keep $119 a year - Even though Dropbox is more than a photography plan, I use it mainly for that. And because of its versatility and popularity, it has keep its relevance even in this new chapter of my career. My online clients use it, and I need it as much as ever. iCloud 2TB - Keep $9.99 a month - If I had to keep just one cloud storage service, it would be iCloud. Since I'm in the Apple ecosystem, this services manages all the work I do on my Mac, including my photos. I wish they had a level in-between 200 GB (which isn't enough) and 2 TB (which gives me lots of head room). Regardless, it's a keeper for me. So, I've managed to trip 1/3 of my services in 2021. I'll review everything again in 2022 and go from there. Who knows what my world will be like by then? The Vanagon is Gone! I know this is a story near and dear to many hearts in our community, but I've sold the Vanagon that I used for workshops over the years, a vehicle filled with 20 years of fond memories. I've been working on it since that one miserable hot summer day a few years back when I had to have it towed from SF to Santa Rosa. I had feared that she died that day. But like a Phoenix from the ashes, she came back to full functionality. Of course, this included hours of my sweat equity combined with a few trips to Hans in Sebastopol. And on the day that I handed over the pink slip to a young German pre-med student and his girlfriend, she was running like a top. I honestly had a lump in my throat watching her drive away. Fortunately, Vanagons retain an excellent resale value on the used market, and the cash payment for my 1990 will be a sizable part of the downpayment for my new all-electric VW ID.4 5 passenger SUV. This begins a new chapter in my road trip adventures. I'll be using the ID.4 for upcoming workshops and my ongoing exploration of the world. I placed my reservation back in February, and was able to place the order just last week. So the new car is currently being built, and I should be behind the wheel by late April. I'll keep you posted! Adobe Photoshop's 'Super Resolution' Made My Jaw Hit the Floor You can read the entire article on Petapixel. Adobe just dropped its latest software updates via the Creative Cloud and among those updates is a new feature in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) called "Super Resolution." You can mark this day down as a major shift in the photo industry. I have seen a bit of reporting out there on this topic from the likes of PetaPixel and Fstoppers, but other than that the ramifications of this new feature in ACR have not been widely promoted from what I can see. The new Super Resolution feature in ACR essentially upsizes the image by a factor of four using machine learning, i.e. Artificial Intelligence (AI). What does this mean practically? Well, I immediately tested this out and was pretty shocked by the results. Though it might be hard to make out in the screenshot below, I took the surfing image shown below, which was captured a decade ago with a Nikon D700 -- a 12MP camera -- and ran the Super Resolution tool on it and the end result is a 48.2MP image that looks to be every bit as sharp (if not sharper) than the original image file. This means that I can now print that old 12MP image at significantly larger sizes than I ever could before. What this also means is that anyone with a lower resolution camera, i.e. the current crop of 24MP cameras, can now output huge image files for prints or any other usage that requires a higher resolution image file. In the three or four images I have run through this new feature in Photoshop I have found the results to be astoundingly good.

Marco has invited back his friend, journalist, and reviewer of cameras and photographic equipment Angela Nicholson to talk about the latest news from the world of mirrorless cameras. This show is sponsored by: Skylum Luminar - The cutting edge photo editor http://bit.ly/PPN-Luminar3 and COSYSPEED - The fastest camera bags in the world. http://bit.ly/STREETOMATIC Canon has released the EOS M200. The new M200 replaced the M100 entry-level APS-C camera. It still has a 24MP APS-C sensor and a 180° touch LCD. But the new Digic 8 processor is supposed to improve the AF with Dual Pixel AF and eye detection. Canon EOS M200 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2IWGxxG Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2BmvCc8 Canon PowerShot G5X MK II The G5 X MK II is a high-end compact camera with a 20MP 1” sensor. It has a fixed 24-120mm f1.8-2.8 zoom lens. But one of its special features is a pop-up EVF and flash. The touch-LCD tilts up 180° and 90° down and on the video side, the camera shoots 4K/30p and up to 120p in full HD video. Canon PowerShot G5X MK II B&H: https://bhpho.to/33Dx6ek Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2MmgfH2 Fuji announced the development of the X-Pro 3. This new iteration of the X-Pro line from Fuji will have a better Hybrid Electronic- and optical viewfinder and it finally gets a tilt-LCD. But as much as Marco has been wanting this feature on the X-Pro line, he has quite some concerns if the way that Fuji implemented it will be very convenient in real-life situations. Fuji also announced the development of an XF 50mm f1.0 lens. But this lens will come instead of the long-time announced XF 33mm f1.0 lens. Why did they change their mind and was this a good decision? Marco’s Fuji X-T2 has issues with the weather sealing and the Fuji Cam Remote app continues to have serious issues. Fuji has also announced an update to the entry-level X-A5 that is now called X-A7. The camera has a new 24MP APS-C bayer pattern sensor with 8.5 times more phase-detection AF-Pixel than the previous X-A5. The camera has only 4 buttons: A shared drive/trash bin, a replay, a shared Menu/OK, and a display button. Plus an AF-Joystick that helps to operate the camera next to the 3.5” touch LCD. The camera will be available in 4 colors and will hit the stores on October 24th. Fuji X-A7 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2nYdB0U Sony introduced the a7R IV. This is a 61MP full-frame camera that also offers a high-res mode with 240MP. The OLED EVF as 5.7 Mio. dot and the 4K video mode does not add a crop to the width of the sensor. Sony a7R IV B&H: https://bhpho.to/2BqoYS9 Sony also added the new entry-level a6100 and the flagship a6600 to their APS-C lineup. The a6100 is a stripped-down a6400 with a lower resolution EVF. The new a6600 has IBIS, faster tracking AF and uses bigger Z-type batteries that hold about twice the capacity compared to the smaller W-series that the other a6000 cameras are using. This show is loaded with new mirrorless camera hands-on experiences and news. For this show, Marco has invited back his friend, journalist, and reviewer of cameras and photographic equipment Angela Nicholson. This show is sponsored by: Skylum Luminar3 - The cutting edge photo editor http://bit.ly/PPN-Luminar3 and COSYSPEED - The fastest camera bags in the world. http://bit.ly/STREETOMATIC Angela flew all the way to Rome to test out the new Fuji X-T30 camera. The new X-T30 replaced the X-T30 and gains some features of the top of the line X-T3, like the 26.1 MP BSI sensor, the AF-joystick, and a faster AF. But some features as lacking from the big brother like the second SD-card slot, the high res EVF, and the dedicated ISO dial. Angela has used the camera and shares her experience with it and how it compares to the X-T3. Just after we were done recording, Fuji issued a FW 1.01 update to lessen the effect of the X-T30 “accidental Q-button engagement.” After installing and testing the Q-button update, Angela has added her findings at the bottom of the X-T30 review at CameraJabber.com: https://camerajabber.com/fujifilm-x-t30-review/ Fuji X-T30 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2IpXtPa Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2NnJPLr Fuji released FW update 3.0 for the X-T3. The main improvements cover face and eye detect AF accuracy. Face AF priority has also been added - you can now select the face to focus and meter for when there are multiple people in the frame. And another improvement enables faster AF speed for subjects at a distance. X-T3 FW update on Fuji’s website: Fuji website: https://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/firmware/x/xt3/index.html Fuji Camera Remote App for iOS update. With this update to App V4.0 Marco thinks that the software has finally been improved from “painful to use” to “somewhat usable.” Marco discusses in the show what he thinks is still lacking from the program and urges all camera manufacturers to invest more effort in the features and usability of their smartphone apps. “If they want to compete with the constantly improving cameras on smartphones, they need to make their apps to be desirable to use and easy to pair to multiple devices. Panasonic has released the Lumix G95/G90. Angela has had a hands-on with the camera and shares if this Lumix camera is more for the photographer, the videographer, or a truly 50-50 usable hybrid camera. Panasonic Lumix G95/G90 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2GuOg3T Angela also had a longer hands-on with the Panasonic Lumix S1 and S1R cameras and chimes in with her experience and opinion of those cameras in comparison to other FF mirrorless cameras on the market. And she also shares if she would prefer the S1 or S1R in her camera bag. Panasonic Lumix S1 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2Ip0pLK Panasonic Lumix S1R B&H: https://bhpho.to/2IoT9zJ Ricoh introduced the new GR III camera. Both, Angela and Marco have tested the new compact mirrorless camera from Ricoh with its new 24MP APS-C sensor and newly rendered 28mm EFV lens. The rear LCD now is touch-enabled but there are a few things that Marco would have liked to see improved in this latest update to match this camera better to the target audience of street and travel photographers. Ricoh GR III B&H: https://bhpho.to/2GwfHdw Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2IEkOvN Leica has introduced the Q2. The updated Q still has the fantastic fixed 28mm f1.7 lens but gained an almost 100% bump in resolution with the new full-frame sensor moving up from 24MP to 47MP! With this higher resolution, Leica implemented a third native crop mode to the camera. Next to the 35mm (30MP) and 50mm (14.7MP) in-camera crop modes the added 75mm crop still produces a 6.6MP image. The electronic viewfinder was also updated from LCD to OLED and the capacity of the battery was also improved. But the update did not implement two of Marco’s “like to have seen” features of a tilt-LCD and dedicated ISO dial. Leica Q2 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2Gv1pdl Sigma will make 11 of their Art lenses available for L-mount in 2019. This should make Lumix and Leica SL owners very happy because Sigma’s Art lenses are high quality at reasonable prices. The L-mount availability will include the 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 105mm f1.4 DG HSM lenses as well as the 14mm and 135mm f1.8 and the 70mm f2.8 macro ART lenses. And Sigma is also introducing the MC-21 mount converter that will allow some of their SA and EF-mount lenses to adapt to the L-mount system. Sigma L-Mount lenses and MC-21 adapter: B&H: https://bhpho.to/2GuR5Sx Sony FW updates for a7 III and a9 cameras. The FW 3.0 for a7III and a7R III adds real-time Eye AF, Animal Eye AF plus interval shooting of 1-9999 exposures in 1 to 60 seconds intervals. The a9 FW 5.0 offers a new AI driven AF for better object recognition and real-time eye tracking plus some changes to the menu settings based on user requests. Sony FW update website a7 III: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/e-mount-body-ilce-7-series/ilce-7m3#downloads a7R III: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/e-mount-body-ilce-7-series/ilce-7rm3#downloads a9: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/e-mount-body-ilce-9-series/ilce-9#downloads Huawei P30 introduction. Angela has tried the new Huawei P30 smartphone with 4 built-in cameras and lenses. This smartphone offers a lot of versatility and features for photographers. The low-light quality is very good and even the computational DOF simulation of an up to f 0.95 lens does an impressive job of rendering fine detail and correctly applying it sharply to the subject or blurred to the background. But the P30 does seem to have some color issues in 4K video mode due to the new RYYB vs. the traditional RGGB pixel layout. But this should be fixable in a future FW update. The 50R will be quite about $2000 cheaper than the 50S at launch and it should start shipping in November 2018. Do you think that smaller sensor cameras will slowly fade out and that future full-frame cameras will come down in size in future development? Question by: Ben, Chicago, Illinois, USA We have a PPN Photo Podcast Network group at Flickr (click link) that is open to our listeners and photos taken with all mirrorless camera brands. Lumix S1R and S1 are Panasonic's first full-frame mirrorless cameras, announced today at Photokina in Köln, Germany. Both cameras—coming in early 2019—feature a full Super 35-sized sensor, which is nearly four times larger than the micro4/3 sensor in my Panasonic GH5. The Lumix S1R is a 47-megapixel camera designed for photographers, and the S1 is 24MP for hybrid photo video shooters. Each camera shoots 4K60p, with in-body image stabilization, a 3-axis tilt LCD, and two different card slots—one for an SD card, and one for an XQD card. Panasonic is developing three new L-mount lenses: a 50mm prime f/1.4, a 24-105 and a 70-200mm. Like the cameras, these lenses will come out in early 2019.

B&H: https://bhpho.to/2m32O0G Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2u4CF61 Fuji messed up the first FW upgrade 4.0 for the X-T2, but they have fixed it and now offer FW 4.1 here: http://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/firmware/x/xt2/index.html Leica Launches the C-Lux compact superzoom camera which is basically a rebranded Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200 with a red dot that is about $250 more than the Panasonic version. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2m0BsIz Sony launched the compact RX100 VI. Sony has added a longer zoom lens to the latest version of this camera and the equivalent field of view is 24-200mm with a claimed 4-stop image stabilization. The extended zoom range made the lens quite a bit slower at f2.8-4.5 whereas the predecessor had an EVF 24-70mm lens at a much faster f1.8-2.8 aperture lens. The image processor was also upgraded and AF plus eye tracking should be faster than in the previous model. And they have finally added a touch-sensitive LCD. Mirrorless question of the month: Hi, first of all, a big thank you for the great photography podcasts that you release each month. You guys have become one of my favorite photography outlets :) I’m actually a better painter than a photographer but my question involves both art forms. I paint on large canvas and would like to create high-resolution files of my paintings for archiving and digital post-processing. The paintings are much too large to scan. I own an old Nikon D7000 with 16MP and have been wanting to upgrade to a recent mirrorless camera. I’m looking at Panasonic and Olympus cameras as the 4:3 aspect ratio fits that of my paintings and both cameras have a high-resolution mode that can produce 80MP images from the 20MP sensor. Do you think that the high-resolution mode will enable me to get good quality large files of my paintings or is this just a marketing gimmick? And which lens would you recommend me to get?
