Latitude Photography School Update. Today, it’s just me talking about a recent shooting experience I had. Two of them actually. I went to the Sun Valley area for some snowshoeing and to Bruneau Dunes State Park in Idaho. The Plan To rent the Sony A7C and the Zeiss Loxia 21mm f/2.8 To have a grand time shooting it somewhere snowshoeing Craters of the moon or Northern Idaho, Kellogg area or Sun Valley area To do it right after Christmas. Also, I was technically still in recovery from my health troubles I’d experienced the last four months of 2020, so this was a test of sorts for me as well. The Experience Camera and lens were delivered just before Christmas, but as family was over I didn’t really get a chance to play with it until just before the shoot. Drove to my folk’s place, they live in the Boise, ID, area. Continued the next day to the Sun Valley area, actually never got to Sun Valley the town, I just use that since y’all likely know where that is. In reality, we stayed in Bellevue and shot north of Ketchum. Randy Gemar joined me once again, you may recall he joined me to Unalaska Island last December. Met briefly at the hotel and then got right out to a trail. Realized my snowshoes, the ones I’ve had at least 10 years, had broken. They were useless. Walked around a bit in the deep snow but then found a trail that was mostly packed snow. Shot some, but was feeling a bit rusty. Also scouted a bit for what we’d do for sunrise the next day. Got into town just in time to rent a pair for the next two days. On Monday, we were out for sunrise. Had a grand time. Hiked about 3 miles. Went back to the hotel for lunch, and then back out again for evening. Hiked for another 2.5 or so miles. I was beat. Didn’t sleep well that night at all. Tuesday was mostly a wash. Tried to sleep in but didn’t really work well. As I was leaving that evening back to the Boise area I had to check out of the hotel. Made the decision to drive back since I was in no position to stay out late and then drive back feeling this tired. We had planned on heading to Sun Valley for some night street photography. I really wanted to test out this camera in those conditions. On the way back, I got the idea that I’d stop in and shoot at the historic Idaho State Prison. Got back and rested up at my parent’s place once again and got home the next day to turn right around on Thursday to take the family back for New Year’s Eve. Drove out to Bruneau Dunes for January 1 shooting. Made it there at about 8:15, right about when the sun came up, but as I had already returned the A7C I only had my Canon and the a6400 to shoot there. A7C vs A7iii I read this article on dpreview.com Certainly they talk about the price differences, how the C is more expensive at the moment, but as a potential new convert to Sony I don’t really see this as a huge deal. Otherwise, they are both very, very similar cameras. 24MP BSI sensors 5-axis IBIS 10 fps 8-bit 4K video They do have bluetooth, used for transferring GPS data from your phone to the camera while shooting. I didn’t test that out as I now have a Garmin Instinct Solar, I’ll talk more about that in a future episode and how I like it for my shooting and what I’m looking to get out of a smart watch. The A7C has an updated AI-trained AF system. So +1, just slightly, for this one over the A7 mk3 A7C uses a smaller viewfinder and only gets .59X magnification. As a glasses wearer I really noticed this. It was rather a pain really. Especially with my sunglasses. Not everything was easy to see in the viewfinder with my sunglasses on. When I took them off it was fine but then I had to adjust the diopter adjuster to see it in focus. When I used my regular glasses all was fine, but again, the screen and magnification is too small. The A7iii has a .78X magnification. +1 for the A7iii The A7C is slightly smaller and I would get this camera to take advantage of that size benefit. The A7iii is a bit larger due to the viewfinder placement, mostly, but I don’t see this as much of a difference between them. If I were to have a larger lens I’d want a larger body to go along with it, especially if that lens doens’nt have a tripod collar. There are differences in the shutters too, I’m not sure I care on this part either. They both offer electronic shutters, they both have physical shutters. But the differences in how they work, to me, are pointless. On the A7C the max shutter speed is 1/4000 sec, 1/8000 sec if you go with the electronic shutter. When it comes to video, the AF is easier on the A7C (tracking) and I like that idea +.5 for the A7C but only .5 since I don’t do much video. In short, the a6400 is great for video and it already does such an excellent job, this one would essentially replace that it seems in the video world. My experience using it Feels good in the hand. The grip is deep enough to hold well. Even when I paired the 70–350 to it, it fit better than I expected for hand held. On the tripod, however, I did wish the lens had a tripod collar. Memory card is not where the battery is. I love that. On the a6400, it’s in the same area as the battery and that’s just annoying to get at. It charges with a USB-C port. That’s very convenient, but it’s still not powerful enough to both charge the battery and run the camera at the same time. That’s a design flaw in my opinion. Surely with a powerful enough power brick it should keep it running indefinitely. Buttons and other controls are kinda small for even the thinnest of gloves. Full on insulated gloves would be impossible to use this camera with. I use neoprene skiing gloves, or a glove liner when shooting in the cold. I was able to make due, but a larger camera certainly does better with these gloves. Flippy screen is great, used it many times as I got odd angle shots. Was able to set the shutter control to the dial I preferred which was nice. The lens has a manual aperture ring which was also excellent! I loved the traditional shooting experience! The screen was bright enough for my sunglasses but as mentioned before, the viewfinder was not. I was able to set it so the center button on the back control wheel item switched the wheel from AF selector to traditional controls as marked on the camera body. I loved this feature and wish I could duplicate the same on the a6400. I’ve not found out how to make this happen. I can also just touch the screen and the AF goes there which also happens on the a6400. I dislike the position of the lens release button. I’m used to it being on the other side on my Canons and this is just an annoyance that I’d have to get used to if I switched. Noticed an odd “pixel blooming” phenomenon when I had some very bright specular highlights in the frame. The Zeiss Lens Experience Fixed at 21mm and manual focus, I wasn’t really able to test the AF performance of the camera all that much. But when I did attached the 70–350 it performed very well. 52mm filter opening, nice and small. Manual aperture ring with a declicking option for video shooters. DOF marks on the lens which makes using hyperfocal distance and other shooting methods very easy. Don’t have to look at the viewfinder at all to determine exact focus range. Just set it to f/16, for example, and ensure that the subject falls within that range as indicated on the lens barrel so it’s in the range of acceptably sharp focus. Camera also has a MF focus assist, when I twist the focus knob it zooms in and makes it very easy to establish focus. Lite snap incoming, snappers! So listen. We all end up shooting at venues that we don't really like. Often when we shoot at these venues, we produce images that we don't really feel are our best work. Let's say you shoot at one such venue, who then end up loving your photos so much that they want to share those images everywhere. They even want to publish your photos from their venue in printed magazines, and your couple is over the moon! But... you don't want that kind of publicity, because you don't like that that venue, and don't want to shoot there again. What do you do? Say 'no way' to make sure you don't get the wrong kind of exposure, or do you say 'why not', as any publicity is good publicity? Well well well, snappers, you'll just have to listen to find out. Also, sorry for all the 12th man jokes. It's just, well, a really funny topic :P

Hi there Snap Snappers. Earlier in the week we reached out to you guys via our facebook account, asking for any topics that you'd like us to talk about. We received a tonne of awesome questions, and today we are talking about one of those - that of posing, and what you can do to help your clients feel comfortable during their portrait shoot. Most couples have never been photographed before. In fact, most of them might tell you 'we are super awkward in front of the camera.' What can you do to help them with this? And, if you haven't shot many weddings, how can you organise your bridal party / couples portrait session on the wedding day to get the best shots possible, and make your couples feel as comfy as possible? Well Snappers, listen in to hear how we do this! Looking for an amazing CRM tool for photographers? Check out Studio Ninja and use the promo code thesnappening50 for 50% off a year's subscription! Hey Snappers! We are truly sorry that we haven't recorded any solid snappage over the last few months. Both Greg and Thom have both been traveling and it's been really hard to find some time to sit down and record from our various locations. But, we love all of you, so we've finally made it happen, and we promise we'll get back into a weekly recording schedule. Also, sorry Thom's audio isn't wonderful on this episode, and that his chair was so creaky :P On today's episode we chat about our travels. Greg attended a wedding in Italy as a guest and ended up drunkenly playing on the band's drum kit at 2am. Thom shot a wedding in Amsterdam and another in London and has settled into his UK apartment. This show is loaded with new mirrorless camera hands-on experiences and news. For this show, Marco has invited back his friend, journalist, and reviewer of cameras and photographic equipment Angela Nicholson. This show is sponsored by:   Skylum Luminar3 - The cutting edge photo editor http://bit.ly/PPN-Luminar3   and   COSYSPEED - The fastest camera bags in the world. http://bit.ly/STREETOMATIC Angela flew all the way to Rome to test out the new Fuji X-T30 camera. The new X-T30 replaced the X-T30 and gains some features of the top of the line X-T3, like the 26.1 MP BSI sensor, the AF-joystick, and a faster AF. But some features as lacking from the big brother like the second SD-card slot, the high res EVF, and the dedicated ISO dial. Angela has used the camera and shares her experience with it and how it compares to the X-T3. Just after we were done recording, Fuji issued a FW 1.01 update to lessen the effect of the X-T30 “accidental Q-button engagement.” After installing and testing the Q-button update, Angela has added her findings at the bottom of the X-T30 review at CameraJabber.com: https://camerajabber.com/fujifilm-x-t30-review/   Fuji X-T30 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2IpXtPa Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2NnJPLr Fuji released FW update 3.0 for the X-T3. The main improvements cover face and eye detect AF accuracy. Face AF priority has also been added - you can now select the face to focus and meter for when there are multiple people in the frame. And another improvement enables faster AF speed for subjects at a distance. X-T3 FW update on Fuji’s website: Fuji website: https://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/firmware/x/xt3/index.html Fuji Camera Remote App for iOS update. With this update to App V4.0 Marco thinks that the software has finally been improved from “painful to use” to “somewhat usable.” Marco discusses in the show what he thinks is still lacking from the program and urges all camera manufacturers to invest more effort in the features and usability of their smartphone apps. “If they want to compete with the constantly improving cameras on smartphones, they need to make their apps to be desirable to use and easy to pair to multiple devices. Panasonic has released the Lumix G95/G90. Angela has had a hands-on with the camera and shares if this Lumix camera is more for the photographer, the videographer, or a truly 50-50 usable hybrid camera. Panasonic Lumix G95/G90 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2GuOg3T   Angela also had a longer hands-on with the Panasonic Lumix S1 and S1R cameras and chimes in with her experience and opinion of those cameras in comparison to other FF mirrorless cameras on the market. And she also shares if she would prefer the S1 or S1R in her camera bag. Panasonic Lumix S1 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2Ip0pLK   Panasonic Lumix S1R B&H: https://bhpho.to/2IoT9zJ Ricoh introduced the new GR III camera. Both, Angela and Marco have tested the new compact mirrorless camera from Ricoh with its new 24MP APS-C sensor and newly rendered 28mm EFV lens. The rear LCD now is touch-enabled but there are a few things that Marco would have liked to see improved in this latest update to match this camera better to the target audience of street and travel photographers. Ricoh GR III B&H: https://bhpho.to/2GwfHdw Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2IEkOvN Leica has introduced the Q2. The updated Q still has the fantastic fixed 28mm f1.7 lens but gained an almost 100% bump in resolution with the new full-frame sensor moving up from 24MP to 47MP! With this higher resolution, Leica implemented a third native crop mode to the camera. Next to the 35mm (30MP) and 50mm (14.7MP) in-camera crop modes the added 75mm crop still produces a 6.6MP image. The electronic viewfinder was also updated from LCD to OLED and the capacity of the battery was also improved. But the update did not implement two of Marco’s “like to have seen” features of a tilt-LCD and dedicated ISO dial. Leica Q2 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2Gv1pdl Sigma will make 11 of their Art lenses available for L-mount in 2019. This should make Lumix and Leica SL owners very happy because Sigma’s Art lenses are high quality at reasonable prices. The L-mount availability will include the 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 105mm f1.4 DG HSM lenses as well as the 14mm and 135mm f1.8 and the 70mm f2.8 macro ART lenses. And Sigma is also introducing the MC-21 mount converter that will allow some of their SA and EF-mount lenses to adapt to the L-mount system. Sigma L-Mount lenses and MC-21 adapter: B&H: https://bhpho.to/2GuR5Sx     Sony FW updates for a7 III and a9 cameras. The FW 3.0 for a7III and a7R III adds real-time Eye AF, Animal Eye AF plus interval shooting of 1-9999 exposures in 1 to 60 seconds intervals. The a9 FW 5.0 offers a new AI driven AF for better object recognition and real-time eye tracking plus some changes to the menu settings based on user requests.   Sony FW update website a7 III: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/e-mount-body-ilce-7-series/ilce-7m3#downloads   a7R III: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/e-mount-body-ilce-7-series/ilce-7rm3#downloads   a9: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/e-mount-body-ilce-9-series/ilce-9#downloads Huawei P30 introduction. Angela has tried the new Huawei P30 smartphone with 4 built-in cameras and lenses. This smartphone offers a lot of versatility and features for photographers. The low-light quality is very good and even the computational DOF simulation of an up to f 0.95 lens does an impressive job of rendering fine detail and correctly applying it sharply to the subject or blurred to the background. But the P30 does seem to have some color issues in 4K video mode due to the new RYYB vs. the traditional RGGB pixel layout. But this should be fixable in a future FW update. Huawei P30 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2GuSJnb Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2Vm5729 Mirrorless question of the month:   Hi! One question about RAW converter and workflow with Fuji. Nikon has finally entered the serious mirrorless camera market with two new full frame cameras - the Nikon Z6 and Z7. This is actually pretty exciting news for the world of mirrorless photography and Sony now has a serious competitor in this segment. But will the new Nikon cameras stop current FF DSLR shooters from flocking over into the Sony a7 and a9 camp? For an in-depth discussion about the new Nikon Z6 and Z7 and their advantages and disadvantages in comparison to the respective Sony cameras, Marco has invited back mirrorless camera expert Mathieu Gasquet (Mat) co-founder of Mirrorlessons.com. Mat was at the Nikon Z press event in London and shares his hands-on experience with the new cameras.   Marco announced that the collaborative street photography book: “Streetfotografie made in Germany” is now shipping. Marco is one of the authors and has written the introduction to this book. Was? Schon wieder zwei Wochen rum? Verdammt.

Hahaha. Und jetzt zurück in die apokalyptische Bürohitze! Viel Spaß!
