Really Interesting Women - the podcastEpisode 132Melissa Doyle AMMel Doyle is so much more than 'an accomplished and awarded journalist with more than 30 years experience'. She's actually one of the best-known and trusted voices and faces in Australian media. And after our conversation for this podcast, it's pretty easy to see why. Mel is, of course, best known as the former co-host of the number one rated breakfast program Sunrise. But it's the beginnings of these careers that are just as interesting to me. What was the first break? How did that come about? And it came about when a recently graduated 20 year old Mel Doyle kept pestering a producer in Canberra to give her a go at presenting the weather on TV. She created her own opportunity. And that was something she did a lot. And more importantly, grabbed those opportunities when they did present themselves. 'What's the worst that can happen?'After 25 very successful years with Channel 7, she was let go. Its happened to most of us, but not in such a public forum. Her response was not only dignified and done with head held high, it was a catalyst for an incredible 'second act'. She has written four books, “The Working Mothers Survival Guide” in 2007, her best selling memoir “Alphabet Soup” in 2013, "15 Seconds of Brave" in 2022 and "How to Age Against The Machine" in 2023.  In the 2016 Australia Day Honours List Mel was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her "significant service to the community through representational roles with a range of charitable groups, and to the broadcast media."She is National Patron for the Make A Wish Foundation and an Ambassador for World Vision, The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, The Children's Hospital at Westmead and Adopt Change.Head to the link in my bio to have a listen to our podcast chat. You'll find her books here:https://www.amazon.com.au/s?k=melissa+doyle&ref=nb_sb_nossImage: Nick LearyVisit instagram @reallyinterestingwomen for further interviews and posts of interesting women in history. Meet Emily: Advocate, Entrepreneur, Mother Emily is a passionate advocate, who has built her whole career around sharing her story and advocating for change. In this episode, we hear from Emily about her life growing up in care, the stigma she faced as a child in care, when she become a “young mum”, and again as she started building her business in the advocacy space without having a qualification. Having worked with CREATE, Adopt Change and many other organisations closely for years, Emily has been instrumental in pushing for systemic change in the care system and is passionate about seeing barriers broken down for young people with a care experience – particularly around employment and education. Emily's passion and fire for change is contagious, so listen in to feel inspired by her #SnapThatStigma journey. Thanks for sharing your story with us Emily! Please note: these episodes may touch on topics of child abuse or neglect, so listener discretion is advised if hearing these stories may be triggering for you. CREATE Foundation is the national consumer body for children and young people in out of home care. We work to CONNECT children and young people to each other, EMPOWER them to have a voice and create CHANGE on a systemic level.  One of the biggest obstacles faced by children and young people with a care experience is the stigma surrounding it. Being labelled the “problem child”, “troubled” or “bad” – when children and young people are placed into care due to no fault of their own. One of CREATE's major campaigns is the Snap that Stigma initiative, where we want to showcase how incredible the young people we work with are, to overcome this negative image dogging young people with a care experience. This year (2021), marks 30 years since the 1991 amendments to Queensland's 1964 Adoption of Children Act. The 1991 amendments entitled adopted people and their parents to receive identifying information about each other - unless the other party had lodged an objection (veto). Parents and adopted people tirelessly lobbied for the amendments for more than a decade and almost saw their efforts fail when the Adoption Privacy Protection Group launched an eleventh hour campaign to maintain closed records. In this episode we speak to former Qld MP, Anne Warner who championed and sponsored the amendments when she was Minister for Family Services and Minister for Aboriginal and Islander Affairs. Anne reflects on this period, the compromises she was forced to make and the legislative amendments she says she is most proud of during her time as Minister. “It's a mixed blessing to see yourself in your kids,” says Geoff Broughton, the rector at Paddington Anglican Church in Sydney. He's only half joking. As an adopted child, the first time he met a ‘blood relative' was at the birth of his son. Watching his son grow up and take on his likeness stirred something in Geoff that he had never felt before – a desire to find out about his birth family. By age 40, Geoff realized that he had to make a decision. He went from saying, “I don't need to know”, to asking “Do I never want to know?” If he waited another decade, it might be too late. In this episode, Geoff shares his story of reconnecting with his birth family and what his experience as an adoptee has taught him about the theological concept of adoption. Also, we consider the fact that Geoff's positive experience of adoption is not what many children in his situation face. In Australia, 2013-14 figures show that more than 43,000 children were placed in out of home care. Compared to the 317 adoptions finalised in this same period, there's clearly an overwhelming number of children in need of a permanent home. Jane Hunt, CEO of Adopt Change, tells us the real stories behind these statistics, explains the need for adoption reform so that policies prioritise the best interests of the child. --- SUBSCRIBE to our podcast: http://bit.ly/lifeandfaithpodcast FIND OUT MORE about Adopt Change: http://www.adoptchange.org.au
