In this episode of Bleeding Daylight, Rodney Olsen welcomes Allen C. Paul, a seasoned musician, author, and advocate for Christian creatives, to discuss the intersection of faith and the creative arts. Allen shares his journey from a childhood surrounded by music, influenced by his mother, a music teacher, and his father's diverse record collection, to navigating the complexities of being a Christian creative. He explores the tension between pursuing a career in the arts while maintaining a strong Christian faith, offering insights into how he balances these aspects of his life. Allen also delves into the broader topic of creativity, arguing that all people are inherently creative, made in the image of a creative God. He emphasises the importance of recognising one's identity beyond just their talents, highlighting the need for Christian creatives to ground themselves in their faith first and foremost. Through personal stories, including an intriguing tale about his resignation and unexpected promotion within his church, Allen provides valuable lessons on embracing creativity without compromising faith. In this Creative Checkup episode, host Allen C. Paul shares his own experience of looking to God for the right timing and explains how those lessons can apply to your own life - especially when it's hard to determine what's best. In the past few years, there has been ever increasing pressure from certain voices in our culture advocating 'wokeness' as a way to see the world. But just what is being woke, and is this a healthy mindset for your family or business to accept? Steve Alessi continues our conversation from Season 2, Episode 5 with Allen C. Paul, a member of our podcast team, to better define what our families' response to “wokeness” should be, and how we should guide our families through these cultural shifts. As hope appears on the horizon for a return to normalcy in a post-pandemic world, a serious question remains: Is 'going back to normal" a good thing? Like the majority of professions, musicians and creatives like you experienced extreme hardships during the heart of the pandemic. However, we also learned major lessons, grew tremendously in our ability to pivot and reinvent ourselves, and even became possibly more marketable and savvy in our businesses. With all of those positive effects, maybe you shouldn't simply go back to your pre-pandemic ways even when the world begins to function again. In this Creative Checkup episode, host Allen C. Paul peels away the layers of the 'normal' lifestyle we used to live as creatives, and how the habits we developed in the heart of the shutdown should be applied in any environment or situation you may face in the future. In this episode, we welcome back Allen C. Paul for an important conversation on the third rail of conversations, race. I will tell everyone that this was a much more difficult conversation than I imagined, and I didn't want to have it in the first place! But with all that is going on in the world, and since this is an uncomfortable conversation, both Allen and I jumped right in. I always say that if you are not uncomfortable, you're not doing it right. So I took my own advice, found a great partner to have the conversation with, and I came away better for it. It is so difficult when talking about race to honestly share your thoughts. So much here can get misinterpreted, quotes used against you, fear of insulting the person you're talking with, and the list of pitfalls is long. But Allen and I agreed it was something we wanted to do, and we dove right in. What I learned is that perspective is important, and getting out of your bubble to improve that perspective is critical. I also proved exactly what I thought prior to the conversation, which is that Allen and I see much of the world the same way, and that our differences are nothing that can't be worked out through conversation and reason. This episode is different than anything we have done before, AND I AM HAPPY WE DID IT. I hope that you all take this as an incentive to go out and start open and honest conversations yourself. Conversations where you listen, and not prove how “right” you are. I think that only through honest dialogue will we be able to work through this as a society. And honest dialogue is something that is non-existent in today's environment. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we did making it. It's not always easy to keep your head up, creative. Especially now. In the face of continuous negative news, uncertain economic realities, and confusion in the culture, Christ-centered creatives are in between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, we want to be wise and protect our loved ones from any possibility of harm. On the other hand, we are called to serve and push forward to help encourage and bless our communities and congregations. How do we navigate these troubling issues without losing our faith? In this frank and stripped-down episode, host and author Allen C. Paul decided to open up about his own feelings regarding the priority of ministry, his creative career, the COVID crisis and where he's finding answers - even if they aren't perfect or apparent.
Co-host Allen C. Paul opens up about his own mental health journey and suggests three key steps we can take as creatives to begin the process of healing while removing the stigma surrounding this issue - especially within the faith community.
