This episode features a lady who says she's constantly working at balance with life at home and work. The life shifts during pandemic impact her just like us all to find the clear boundaries for self-care and being intentional to be present. The conversation is enlightening and you’ll gather tips and thoughts to ponder. We speak of confidence and the fact that sometimes it comes later in life and a feeling of not belonging or questioning creeps into our mind of “Am I smart enough to be here?” — which can cripple. Meet Dr. Andrea Hunt —a first generation college graduate, a University Professor, a community volunteer and a mentor for many young adults. Anytime we move from one period of our life to the next is a time where transition can make us question and this professional working woman has found that seeking a mentor can be one of the most important tools to create perspective. Such a move proved solid for her as she set sights beyond what she knew. Andrea says that we are often the barrier for ourselves and having mentors can reaffirm that you do belong and can set the path. We talk of self care, mindset and mental health. This guests pinpoints that we must follow up with tools and resources and strategies and begin with normalizing a conversation. To be able to say that you are not okay at the moment in our classes or work places, Andrea says is key and then the work to be able to verbalize why can create the avenues to making the situation okay. Pandemic changed much for students and staff alike and having a context helps when all of the key transition points are occurring. In this episode we talk of opportunities to gain knowledge and skills in the environment where you are or where you can go. For Andrea, seeing students pour into communities and families as they work in centers, run grant projects or create curriculum to make families stronger is thrilling. She herself volunteers in many capacities from a court appointed role working for the child in foster situations to presenting early college education to high schoolers. Her love is to help young people navigate challenges. Through her work and bringing those examples to her students in the classroom, she helps ground them in the reality of working in the social sciences. It is hard and it can tug the heart. Andrea talks about how the pandemic caused some opportunities for partnerships and guests coming into the classroom from across the world via zoom. A perspective we don’t always think of. There are projects she is working on that are exciting— like career counseling and combining sociology and models for different student populations. You’ll hear her enthusiasm as she talks about first generation students both in college and what happens to these graduates after they step into the career world and take on leadership roles and the research that she has launched to study the topic. Andrea is authentic and invested in the lives of others. Travel and learning about other people is important and she has the opportunity to interact with the international students on her campus and served as a host family — which allows her own kids to learn and engage. We can learn from other’s experiences. Tune in! Music “STOMP” used by permission of artist Donica Knight Holdman and Jim Huff

On this episode, we return to the hip-hop education space, as I talk with Dr. Andrea Hunt.Dr. Hunt developed and teaches a Sociology of Hip-Hop Culture course at the University of North Alabama, and while she is very much involved with the regional hip-hop community, what I really like about her course and her work, is that she is bringing hip-hop into a school with a predominantly white student body -- and in a quote unquote “red state” to boot.Of course, we’ve seen educators using hip-hop in urban and predominant minority settings with great success, but I was curious to hear about Dr. Hunt’s experience merging hip-hop studies in this setting. And as I mentioned, Dr. Hunt also does a great job at extending her connection to hip-hop way past the walls of her classroom, using the culture and associated artform to improve lives in the communities where it’s needed most. All in all, I think you’ll be as inspired as I was to hear how she is using hip-hop to inform and inspire folks from all walks of life, in ways that I think can help contribute to an increase in cross-cultural understanding, and help repair some of the damage that has been done to our collective social fabric.

Not Your Little Lady

There's a power in being vulnerable. Dr. Andrea Hunt, assistant professor of Sociology at the University of North Alabama, goes in depth on the power of being vulnerable. England born Chris, as well as Jim and Derrek like to enjoy ourselves, and like to get everybody around us to have a fun time, but we also are very dedicated musicians. This places it within the late La Tène period or early Roman Iron Age. The cauldron is the largest known example of European Iron Age silver work. For more information, consult the Wiki page for the Cauldron.   The Witch-God Cernunnos by Sorita D'Este This anthology is the first of its kind to be focused on the horned gods of our ancestors and includes both scholarly essays, bardic retellings of stories such as that of Herne the Hunter and a number of experiential essays. Invocations and meditation journeys are also included. The piece we bring you from this wonderful book is about the Celtic God Cernunnos and was written by the book's editor, the talented Sorita D'Este. These are translated into English by Joseph Campbell (in the Collected Works of 1917). [Wiki] Mise Éire: Sine mé ná an Chailleach Bhéarra Mór mo ghlóir: Mé a rug Cú Chulainn cróga. Mór mo náir: Mo chlann féin a dhíol a máthair. Mór mo phian: Bithnaimhde do mo shíorchiapadh. Mór mo bhrón: D'éag an dream inar chuireas dóchas. Mise Éire: Uaigní mé ná an Chailleach Bhéarra.   I am Ireland: I am older than the old woman of Beare. Great my glory: I who bore Cuchulainn, the brave. Great my shame: My own children who sold their mother. Great my pain: My irreconcilable enemy who harrasses me continually... Great my sorrow That crowd, in whom I placed my trust, died. I am Ireland: I am lonelier than the old woman of Beare.   One Spring Eve by Willie Meikle Willie Meikle is a Scottish Author who writes Fantasy and Horror Fiction and has eight books published. Perhaps it was all of the touring she did as a teenager with the Calgary Youth Orchestra and the Calgary Fiddlers that made her appreciate the subtleties of having a solid home base. It may have been the influence of playing with elite musicians and performing to sell out crowds that seeded her desire to mold a new musical lifestyle. Her natural flair for Celtic vocal styling leaps out in her 2003 debut CD “Winds Of Change”. On this self produced project all 13 tracks were recorded live off the floor. “What you hear is what we did” Sora says. “Everyone was in the same small room at the same time”. The arrangements for each song were chosen specifically because they were so different from anything she had ever heard – which gave her the chance to put her heart and sound into each track. You can find her music on Myspace or Corvid Media. You can find out more details about Sora on her Contributor Page on our website. Children of Lir When on feathered wings take flight 'Oer the hills beating the time To the swans final song Sung so sweet, so for so long As they leave rocky shore Flying west with the sun And I watch from the land I love My past come undone Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song The stones silently fall And where do I belong? On the hollow faerie mound The silence calls mocking the time When the swans haunting song Carried far, resounding strong And their stories they drift Upon stormy seas Lost in the waves of time The island, it is me Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song The stones silently fall And where do I belong? When the bells so loudly toll An anthem rung drowing the sound To the swans final song Silver notes, fading, withdrawn Change swiftly comes On the wings of the dove The voices once heard are gone Where are they love? Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song  Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song The stones silently fall And where do I belong? Do I belong?   Beara, Queen of Alba by Andy Guthrie We are incredibly privileged to have Andy as a Contributor to the show. Some souls work for peace and happiness. Others, though, despoil, degrade, and kill. This is a novel of past lives, reincarnation, and our occult history. Not many protohumans were alive, one and one-half million years ago, but all of us had souls, and souls persist, and there are souls which lived in hominids in Chesowanja, eastern Africa who have lived among us almost to the present day. Shimmer loves his wives, Sita and Ahalya, and tries to share sweet lives with them, but the trickster Murk, intent on dragging Mankind down, drives black souls to attack the ones who love. Come along as Shimmer leads migrations. Relive the waning of the Great Ice Age and the planetwide disaster. And remember how Old Kingdom Egypt travelled through a pleat in time to stabilize and rule the river plains of northern India. Re-experience Murk's dark campaign to undermine that peaceful land, and once again respond to Shimmer and Old Shiver's call to arms and meet the enemy between two rivers at fabled Kurukshetra. Yeats William Butler Yeats (13 June 1865 – 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and dramatist, and one of the foremost figures of 20th-century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and English literary establishments, in his later years Yeats served as an Irish Senator for two terms. He was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival, and together with Lady Gregory and Edward Martyn founded the Abbey Theatre, and served as its chief during its early years. In 1923, he was awarded a Nobel Prize in Literature for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation;" and he was the first Irishman so honored. Maud Gonne Originally published in the Weekly Critical Review on 4th June 1903, The Rider from the North was later called The Happy Townland. This poem was read from In The Seven Woods which can be found at Sacred Texts, subtitled Being poems chiefly of the Irish Heroic Age.    Light by Sora Sora (aka Andrea Hunt) is an independent musician with a different philosophy on how she wants to share her music with the world. Her CD's , Lady Moon and I Walk with the Goddess are being recognized around the globe as a must have for any lover of Goddess inspired folk music. The track she has given us permission to play is called Morgana, and you can find the lyrics on her site. About the track she says:  "Morgana was created after I read Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Mists of Avalon" for the third time. The lyrics were completed upon my return from the Ancient Isle of Avalon in Glastonbury, England. Being in Avalon and on the Tor, I could easily imagine Morgan losing her way in the mists and traveling to the Fairy World. She was strong and always emerged from the magical realm to her beloved Avalon." Kellianna can be found on Myspace, but her own website provides lots of useful information, including the lyrics to her songs, another chance to listen to more music as well as being able to buy her two CDs. Her music can also be purchased through iTunes. You can find out more details about Kellianna on her Contributor page on our website.    Listener Feedback Ann We remind our Listeners that we have a poll on the website to help us realise what direcvtion they want us toi take the show in.
