Show Notes: https://webgrowthcode.com/choosing-a-domain-name-with-andrew-allemann-from-domain-name-wire   Andrew Alleman walks us through choosing a domain and extension for your website. We also take a deep dive into buying and selling domains — something many do out there as a side gig.   Have you ever wondered who's buying all the .coms out there? Andrew has some inside scoop on who's buying them. Plus, we found out if I screwed up my last domain purchase.  Tune in to this episode for an exciting deep dive into the world of domains. Choosing a Domain Show Notes with Andrew Alleman 02:00 - Andrew shares his experience in online marketing and website growth. He has been writing the Domain Name Wire blog since 2005 and has a podcast of the same name.  03:23 - Andrew walks us through starting a website, including choosing a domain registrar. With thousands of options out there, he notes that GoDaddy is currently the biggest registrar in the market. He also mentioned Namecheap, HostGator, Porkbun, and Google.  04:03 - The differences between these registrars are the price, security, service, and account management system. People can get a domain name from one registrar and host it at another site. We also talk about the importance of choosing the right domain name extensions. 09:07 - Andrew tells us about his podcast and the topics he usually talks about with guests.  10:07 - Andrew walks us through his process of starting a new website. For most people starting, Andrew suggests either creating a WordPress site with GoDaddy or getting a Wix, Squarespace, or Weebly website.  There are lots of cheap hosting services, but a lot of them are designed for WordPress. One of the biggest ones is WP Engine.  17:24 - Andrew advises that if the domain name you want is already taken, it may be listed for sale and can be purchased. And while buying a new domain name for $10 may seem preferable, it may be worth paying for the one you want. 23:56 - The Domain Name Wire Podcast started in 2014. He recently had an episode about buying expired domains for their SEO value. 25:00 - We explore the difficulties of using non-.com domain extensions for websites. 29:35 - We delve into the world of buying and selling domain names. Afternic and Sedo.com are two places where people can list their domains for sale.   35:26 - Andrew talks about the mentors that have influenced him along the way. Some of the other podcasts that Andrew listens to are The Side Hustle Show by Nick Loper, Startups For the Rest of Us, and Working It Out.  Nick Loper was on the podcast, where he talked about tips to turn a side hustle into a full-time business.  40: 42 - Andrew mentions some of the big names he's had on his podcast, like the creator of WordPress, Matt Wullenweg, and the bassist for Megadeth.  Show Notes: https://webgrowthcode.com/choosing-a-domain-name-with-andrew-allemann-from-domain-name-wire

A fun way to grow your influence, your audience, and customer base is by being a podcast guest. But how do you do that? And how do you find the right podcasts? Then once you're booked, what do you need to do to be a success? Today's guest has the answers. Andrew Allemann started a podcast as an offshoot of his trade publication. Not only has it proven itself with over 400 episodes, but it spawned an idea for a service that connects podcast hosts with people wanting to be interviewed! That service, PodcastGuests, has grown to over 38,000 subscribers, adding solid revenue to Andrew's business. You'll also hear about MVP - minimum viable product, and how to use this concept to minimize losses and double-down on promising side hustle winners. In today's end-of-episode takeaways, I focus in on how to get the best results when you're a podcast guest, and you'll hear about a super-efficient, yet under-used free tool (yup, it's free) that puts you in touch with great publicity opportunities.   What You'll Hear: 03:10 Domain Name Wire: trade publication for the domain name industry with 10,000+ posts 04:35 Birth of a podcast 07:03 Out of necessity - podcastguests.com was born 09:48 The jump to building up the platform to enable paid subscriptions 10:36 Key contacts made at an industry conference 11:20 MVP - minimum viable product 13:00 Andrew has had businesses not work out 16:08 The value and benefits of being a guest on podcasts 17:13 Why you might want to start your own podcast…and reasons why you shouldn't 20:44 How to sell and how not to sell if you're a guest 25:52 How to get booked more often 27:48 Resource for new guests: podcastguests.com/guide 29:12 Best ways to monetize your podcast 30:30 A lot of podcasts don't make it to 10 episodes! 31:15 Discoverability is not good in podcasts, resulting in typically a slow-build 32:00 Best way to grow your listenership 36:33 Figure out the minimum product you can get out there to test, then ACT! Key Takeaways: 38:05 Focus on content - not selling, when you're being interviewed 38:45 google.com/alerts, a free way to be notified of news in your industry…for pitching stories to the media, it's a handy idea-generator   How to find the resources: Connecting podcasters and guests, podcastguests.com How to be a podcast guest, podcastguests.com/guide   Connect with Joan: Instagram Facebook Joan's Main Site Email Be on the show! Why you've got to check out this episode: Discover the two critical considerations for starting and making a successful podcast Understand the minimum requirements for getting started in podcasting. Hear about ways of becoming a great guest so you constantly give value and people come and find you. 3 Rs Read Resource Reflect Read: The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz Resource: Loom Reflect: "Perfection is the enemy of progress"- Winston Churchill Perfecting everything before getting out there is a common dilemma getting in the way of many aspects in marketing and managing your real estate investing business. Podcasting is no exception. The chances are, the more you delay, the more you're not going to end up doing anything. Ultimately you may even end up wondering if it's for you to begin with. It also takes planning on top of all the other things you do in your real estate investing business. So let's find out if you're cut out to do that and why you should even consider podcasting. In today's episode, Andrew Allemann talks about ditching the idea of perfectionism in starting your podcast. You get to progress and learn a lot as you go along. And you do not have to have your own podcast to get involved, you can be a guest on other podcasts instead. He highlights getting into podcasting for the right reasons as well as setting and managing your expectations. It may not be for everyone but if you're game to do it, it's a great way to raise the visibility and credibility of your real estate investing personal brand. Andrew Allemann is a podcasting expert and founder of PodcastGuests.com. The service is used by well over 30,000 people to both find guests for podcasts and for experts to get booked on podcasts. But it does. If you find that that's too much work, and you don't enjoy doing that, then you're probably not going to like being a host." - Andrew Allemann "If you are interested in doing it, don't try to make it perfect before you launch. Because then you'll never launch." - Andrew Allemann "Do you want to be a solo podcast? You want to have guests? There's no right answer to this. I find that having guests makes my job a little bit easier. Yes, we need to schedule, but I've done some solo podcasts where I'm the only one talking, and I'm so exhausted by the time I'm done. Because you're coming up with 100% of the content rather than your guests having the content, you just prompting them." - Andrew Allemann "The number one way to market your podcast is to be a guest on other shows. The people that are listening to those shows, 100% of them are podcast listeners. So, when you market anywhere else, maybe 10, 20% listen to podcasts, but with podcasts, it's 100%." - Andrew Allemann "You don't want to go on a podcast and sell, sell, sell. If you provide a lot of value in the form of entertainment or education to the podcast, then people will naturally come find you." - Andrew Allemann "Even if you don't have a lot of followers on social media, you can still say, 'Hey, I'm gonna post this to Twitter three times after I'm on it for something like that.' You're focusing less on the size of your audience and more on 'Hey, I'm going to put some effort into this.' - Andrew Allemann Additional Resource: Are you a real estate investor looking to build your business and stand out from the crowd, and you don't want to wait for all the knowledge, strategies, and how-tos to be slowly delivered to you via this podcast every week? Podcasting is your future. You should consider being a guest on podcasts about your area of expertise. If you cannot find one, consider starting your own podcast. My guest on this podcast, Andrew Allemann, shares many benefits about podcasting. Most important is that, as a guest you gain exposure to a new audience. You also achieve credibility as an expert. Even if you are an employee working for a small business or a large corporation, being a guest will help you to build your reputation. If you are a podcast host, you can gain access to many more people, even community or industry leaders. Andrew can help. He is an expert in podcasting. He helps other experts to become recognized authorities in their fields and shows them how to spread important industry news and information online. Andrew created the website, PodcastGuests.com, to connect podcasters with guests for their shows. Over 20,000 people use his service to both find guests for podcasts and for experts to get booked on podcasts. Some of the important advice that Andres shares in this podcast includes: How can you ADD VALUE? •Know their audience; share important content that will help them •As a guest, provide content that will help the audience •Provide sample questions, an introduction (make it as easy as possible for host) •Simple steps can improve your sound quality (USB mic, sound baffling; recording in a clothes closet) How can you GIVE BETTER PRESENTATIONS? •Use podcasts as opportunity to practice public speaking •Prepare for podcasts the same as preparing for a live speech •Have talking points prepared in advance •Make it conversational •Podcasts are recorded, not live, will be edited (less stress, less risk) How can you MAKE MORE MONEY? •Being a podcast guest is all about exposure – you are introduced to a new audience •You become an expert; you increase your credentials and credibility •As podcast host, you can gain access to more community or industry leaders •Podcasts are always available; others can hear you online at any time Your next step is to visit Andrew's web site, PodcastGuests.com. Review some of the other guests' pages. Then, create your own “1-Sheet”, a one-page introduction of yourself, providing your expertise, credentials, and contact information. Andrew recommends that it also include sample questions and information on how you can help the podcaster's audience AND the podcaster. To help you more, get Andrew's FREE GUIDE to being a podcast guest (http://podcastguests.com/guide). If you want more help, contact me. I want to help you to give better presentations. Andrew has an extraordinary list of guests that are relevant to so many communities. In today's episode, we talk about how podcasts can benefit communities and how the more senior of us can benefit from podcasting. Here's what he has to say.   Need great guests? Find other podcasters and experts that already know what it takes to be a guest and invite them to your program. Want more exposure? PodcastGuests.com helps in two ways. First, being a guest on another podcast helps spread the word about your podcast. Second, when you invite another podcaster or expert to be on your program, they usually help promote their guest appearance. After you sign up, I’ll send you a weekly email with opportunities for you to appear on podcasts as a guest. Find a good match? Just fill out the form and your information will be sent to the podcaster. Looking for other podcasters and experts to be guests on your program? Complete a short form and I’ll send it out in the weekly emails. Interested podcasters will fill out a form with their qualifications and you’ll get access to their information. (They won’t get your email address, so you don’t have to worry about spam!) It’s as simple as that. And it’s free. Andrew Allemann (https://www.linkedin.com/in/allemann/) is our special guest on today's episode of Traffic and Leads Podcast (http://trafficandleadspodcast.com). He is the founder of Podcast Guests (https://podcastguests.com)—an online directory of people that are willing to be guests on podcasts that match their area of expertise and qualifications—Andrew has found a way to connect people with ease, and for free, too! This week, Andrew and I talk about the importance of podcasts, how his website works, and what you should do if you’re looking to get into making your own podcast, or trying to be a guest to others. Let’s get started! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Where Andrew got the idea for his podcast! He was running his own podcast, and after 50 episodes, Andrew realized he was repeatedly searching through his Rolodex of contacts to get guests. He needed a broader look and to get different people for the show, and while there’s a lot of services out there that can help, they can be expensive. So, Andrew wanted to create something that was more a platform, and Podcast Guests was created! * How it works when you sign up for Podcast Guests. Weekly, Andrew sends out a letter to over 6,000 people featuring podcasts that are looking for guests and what their qualifications are. If you need those qualifications, you simply click a link, full out a form, and the information is sent to the host! It’s really that easy! Andrew also tells us about the paid version of his website, explaining that it makes it easier for people to find you by uploading you into a directory of guests. That way, hosts can come to you, and not the other way around. * Which is better if you’re just starting out, hosting or being a guest. Andrew definitely encourages people to be a guest first, because it’ll help you understand if podcasting is something you want to do in the long term. You’re making a commitment not only to yourself but to your listeners as well, so being a guest for a while lets you understand and create your style, what you think works and your niche. Then, if you find that you excel at it, you should look into starting a podcast of your own! * How to host a podcast. Andrew explains that, honestly, it’s easier than most people think! You want to talk about your area of expertise, and a podcast is a lot easier to manage than a radio show, for example. It’s lower risk, it’s not live and audio can be edited to erase any mistakes or awkward moments, and there’s a smaller audience that hears you, making it less nerve-wracking than being in front of live people. Andrew also explains that podcasting is the perfect medium to get more comfortable with public speaking and interview styles. * What you should do in order to get accepted onto a podcast! Andrew explains that you should make it as easy as possible to have the podcaster on the show and make the interview even easier. Additionally, you should be using what’s called a “one sheet”, which is basically a pitch about yourself. It explains what your expertise is, why you’re qualified, specific topics you can talk about, and example questions the host can ask you! Andrew also explains that you should talk about what you can do for them in terms of expanding their audience, and how you can make it grow larger with your presence. * Why it’s more important to be of a high quality, rather than meeting a certain amount of listeners every week. 200 downloads might not seem like a lot, but Andrew encourages you to reframe it to show how valuable podcasting is as medium. If you picture those 200 people in an auditorium every week, people who are willing to hear what you have to see, it becomes a better number to accept!

We are taught that we have to be perfect in recording. Some mistakes are not that noticeable. There are people that pay attention to every little thing so that they can make negative comments. Everyone may not like your show, but some people will.”-Yes, some flaws and mistakes are ok - little things like segment transition errors, ums and ahhs, audio silences, light backgrounds sounds are ok-Not ok, big variation in volume levels, painful to hear humming and audio quality and loud background sounds.-Audio recordings that don’t fit the content flow or topic that are part of the show Blog.Spreaker.com: Podcast Suicide: 5 Errors to Avoid1) Refusing to recognize your target audienceWhile keeping a broad appeal is good, not targeting a specific bracket is like shooting yourself in the foot. It’s like refusing to recognize that you’re speaking to actual listeners, not just to thin air.Start with the very basics: who is your model listener?2)Not having a pre-launch marketing planThis is no time to be modest. At the very beginning, you have got to be your very own cheerleader – cos if you don’t cheer, who will?3)Not bothering to submit to iTunesMaybe you just haven’t got round to it yet. Maybe you are trying an alternative podcatcher service. But there’s no denying that the first place where listeners seek out podcasts is iTunes so no submitting yours amounts to podcast suicide.4)Messing up your RSS feedThe magic touch of podcasting lies in the seamless way information syncs up, like a smooth dive into a pool. This is thanks to your RSS feed. Messing that up, well, it’s tantamount to a belly-flop: jarring and kinda cringe-worthy5)Uploading your podcast directly onto your websiteIt’s nice to keep everything in one place, but that’s no reason for uploading your podcast files onto the same server as your website. First of all, hosting your podcast on your site will be a strain on your bandwidth and therefore make your website really slow. Many podcast listeners are switching away from radioRadio marketing and research company Nuvoodoo offered new research on podcasting. Two recent surveys about podcast listenership. For the overall population, 9.5% of respondents spend at least one hour a day listening to podcasts. Certain demographics reported heavier use of podcasts, most notably men aged 25-34 with 21.7% listening daily for at least an hour. The other top groups with at least an hour time spent listening were men aged 35-44 at 14.2% and men aged 18-24 at 12.9%.According to the participants, the shift to more podcast listening is coming from terrestrial radio. Two-thirds (66.4%) said they listen to less FM radio since they’ve been listening to podcasts. Personal music was the second most-common response at 39.4%, followed by AM radio at 37.9%. Sirius XM has also lost listeners to podcasts, posting 29.7%.The trend of increased podcast listening echoed arcs seen in the latest Infinite Dial results. The podcast audience is still growing, and although it’s a small share of overall audio now, the dedication level is high among people who like the format.-Is something big happening to MP3 audio file format?https://www.engadget.com/2017/05/12/mp3-is-dead-long-live-aac/Reports of the MP3's death have been greatly exaggerated. Earlier this month, one of the patent holders for the audio file type, the German technology institute Fraunhofer, announced that in April it had allowed its patents to expire.Fraunhofer releasing its patents doesn’t mean MP3s will cease to exist, though — it simply means the ubiquitous file type has been released into the wild, making it easier for developers who had previously been unable to support the file type to now go forth and use the file extension any way they want.-So which is it — are MP3s DOA, or finally free? The answer is kind of complicated. Sure, the MP3 isn’t what it used to be — an inescapable, ubiquitous part of the digital musical landscape — but it’s also not going anywhere.-Be free, MP3, be freeThe expiration of Fraunhofer’s patents means that as of April, the MP3 is no longer tethered to the host of encoding licenses that hindered its development since the first patent was filed in 1987. -So why declare the format dead: AAC?Fraunhofer Institute owns patents on another file format that is generally considered to be better — the AAC file, or Advanced Audio Codec. YouTube has plenty of videos attempting to audibly illustrate the difference between the sound quality of an MP3 file and an AAC, but the gist is that AAC files are generally thought to sound better at lower compression rates, or bitrates. Compared with a standard MP3 file, an AAC file sounds sharper and takes up less space on your computer. In actuality, there are already several other file formats, notably FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, and Opus, that don’t come with the same licensing restrictions but do offer the same amount of quality as an AAC. But there are also plenty of other reasons why it’s a bit silly to declare the MP3 in its current state to be dead, and they all boil down to two facts: The MP3 is everywhere — and as digital audio formats go, it’s still pretty great. Fraunhofer’s director wants it to be considered the “de facto standard” file format we should be using.-Like other classic file formats before them, MP3s are here to stayFor most people, however, if you’re not doing a lot of deep sound editing and aren’t a hardcore audiophile, an MP3 is just fine.In podcasting over 90 percent are MP3, and within the most popular 500 podcasts, 99 percent are MP3.Compares the MP3 to another classic file extension that’s shaped the way we think about the internet — the JPEG:MP3 is very old, but it’s the same age as JPEG, which has also long since been surpassed in quality by newer formats. JPEG is still ubiquitous ... because it’s good enough and supported everywhere, making it the most pragmatic choice most of the time.In other words, most of us are going to keep using the MP3 for the same reason we still save images as JPEGs: The quality is fine for our purposes, it’s supported on all the software we use, and we’re used to it. Today I'm joined by a man who has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal and the Washington. He’s been editor of  a site covering the business of domain names for over 10 years now. Welcome to DMR, Andrew Allemann. [You can find Andrew over at DomanNameWire.com.] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG_CyLjhM6M On this episode of Digital Marketing Radio we discuss how to choose a domain name for a website, with topics including: Is a .com always best? I was on your website DomainNameWire.com today and I was impressed at the interaction that you have in the comments - you seem to have more comments on your blog that on social media - is that something that you try to encourage? What makes a good domain name for a website? What are the biggest mistakes that people make when selecting a domain? If the .com isn’t available, is it a good idea to try to think of a different brand name? What about these new domains like .agency or fashionable domains like .me - what are the pros and cons of selecting one of those? What are your thought on the future of the web - will it still be essential to have a great domain when some businesses make all their revenue through Amazon or apps? [Tweet ""Make sure that people can easily spell and remember your #DomainName" @DomainNameWire"] Software I couldn't live without What software do you currently use in your business that if someone took away from you, it would significantly impact your marketing success? DomainTools.com [Domain information service] What software don't you use, but you've heard good things about, and you've intended to try at some point in the near future? Prototyping on Paper [iOS app for prototyping] My number 1 takeaway What's the single most important step from our discussion that our listeners need to take away and implement in their businesses? When you pick out a domain name, make sure if you tell someone that name, they can understand how to spell it, and how to say it back to you.
