Danny and guest Trevor Bolliger discuss the 2021 MCU macrodisaster, Eternals! So who feels like talking about the white supremacist ideology underpinning this film? Let's do that. We also talk about Kit Harington and his tragically small role, why Arishem and Ajak are terrible managers, and which Eternals we wish we could cut from the movie. Come back later this week for Act 2 and Act 3!
The events of Judgment Day are escalating on Krakoa and Arakko. Anti-mutant sentiment is at an all time high. With the combined efforts of Ajak, Makkari, Mr. Sinister, and Iron Man they have a solution. Also, Marvel, why is Wolverine still being forced down our throats? Finally, we discuss X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo and his controversial thoughts on the current X-Men comics run.
Hosts Aljon Go and Dave Bossert go behind the mic with voice actor, David Kaye (Arishem - Marvel Studios The Eternals, Transformers, Ratchet and Clank). They also talk more about Marvel Studio's THOR: Love and Thunder, Disney and pop-culture news, and more. David Kaye's voice-over career began with ‘The Great American Hero', General Hawk in the DIC animation series, GI Joe in 1989. Working as an on-air talent for radio station CKLG (LG73) quickly became less interesting as both on-camera and behind-the-mic roles started taking up more time. Over the next decade and a half, David's on-camera burgeoned along with his voice career. David's biggest moment was when he was cast as ‘Megatron' in 1994 in the wonderfully popular series ‘Transformers.' As a new animation art form was taking off bolstered by Mainframe Entertainment. ‘Beast Wars' was born (‘Beasties' in Canada) and would run for four seasons of “…the most fun you could ever have!”, says Kaye. Thus began an almost twenty-year relationship with the ‘Transformers franchise. In 2007, David “crossed over” to become the only actor in the history of the franchise to play the lead villain AND the lead hero when he was cast as ‘Optimus Prime' for Cartoon Network's ‘Transformers: Animated.” David's voice can be heard in Insomniac's ‘Ratchet & Clank' video game series as the loveable robot ‘Clank and “Hale' on'. He's also been featured in ‘Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions' as ‘Mysterio', ‘Nick Fury' and ‘Captain America' in ‘Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2', ‘Missing Link' in ‘Monsters vs Aliens', the game, and more recently, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Arishem from Marvel Studios - The Eternals, and Barry Barris in Farzar on Netflix. Zhao On Faith, The Original Ending And Harry Styles https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/eternals-spoiler-special-chloe-zhao-on-power-death-dogma-and-harry-styles/ Eternals director Chloé Zhao recently provided fans with the reason why Gilgamesh had to die in the Marvel Studios film. Speaking to Empire, Zhao explained how Gilgamesh's death was pivotal to the development of Thena. "She had no choice but to embrace her vulnerability, her messiness," Zhao explained. "Before she had Gilgamesh and he gave her the most important thing: 'remember, you have it in yourself.' She can't fight it with fire, she's got to let that that [sic] water come in. Thena needed to lean into the soft side of her, and remember the memories that are going to heal her. This was written in the treatment, but losing Gilgamesh is a tough thing for the whole group." Zhao also revealed how it was important to her and Thena actor Angelina Jolie that the character's mental health struggles and strong relationship with Gilgamesh were present throughout the film. "From the very beginning, [Angelina] said, 'Chloe, we gotta have Thena stay feminine, stay vulnerable, break her down. I'm willing to go there. That's very Important,'" she explained. "And also for such a strong woman to not be afraid to lean the shoulder of a strong man. That partnership Thena and Gilgamesh have; she's not afraid to lean on him, and that was important for Angie." During the film, Thena suffered from Mahd Wy'ry, an illness that caused her to forget her memories. Zhao said it was important that one of the strongest Eternals was also seen as vulnerable, adding, "We're talking about one of the strongest female warriors out there in myth, and then we're talking about breaking her down to a point where she's lost herself. She can battle anyone else. But she can't protect herself from herself, not with strength, and not with power." In Eternals, Gilgamesh decided to watch over Thena so that she could keep her memories, despite Ajak warning that this could result in Thena attacking him. When the Eternals reunited, Gilgamesh sacrificed himself in a battle against the Deviants in order to protect Thena. Of course, Gilgamesh wasn't the only member of the Eternals to meet their demise in the film. Leader of the Eternals Ajak was killed by a Deviant, but it was later revealed that Ikaris, in his commitment to Arishem, sacrificed her to the evil creatures. When he failed to allow the Emergence of Tiamut in the final battle against the other Eternals, Ikaris flew into the sun, guilt-ridden from his decisions. While there were initially doubts among audiences as to whether or not Ikaris died or whether he had simply travelled elsewhere, screenwriter Kaz Firpo confirmed the character's fate in an interview with CBR, explaining, "That act is basically saying, 'I made a mistake, but I can't face my family, and I can't go on living.'" Ant-Man 3's Bill Murray Confirms Villainous Marvel Role https://www.cbr.com/ant-man-and-the-wasp-quantumania-bill-murray-villain/ Bill Murray & Eli Manning Have a Day in Brooklyn! | The Eli Manning Show https://youtu.be/pGgJZG2Tot8?t=237 Speaking to Eli Manning of the New York Giants, Bill Murray reveals that his secret Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania role is a "bad guy." Actor Bill Murray has revealed that his role for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is unlike the usual do-gooders he's known for. Speaking to former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning on The Eli Manning Show, the retired athlete questioned Murray about his part in the upcoming film. "Aren't you in, like, a superhero movie coming out? Ant-Man?" Not only does Murray confirm his involvement in the film, but upon being asked what his power is, Murray responds with, "My power is, I'm a bad guy." It was first reported that Murray, known for comedy films like Ghostbusters and Stripes, would be joining the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe installment back in October 2021, with the actor later confirming his involvement a few weeks later while speaking to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. A rumor picked up by The Illuminerdi in late December hinted at Murray playing Krylar, an obscure, Hulk-related character from Marvel comics. However, Krylar's only appearance had him heroically helping the Hulk, debunking the rumor -- unless the film really changes Krylar up. The main villain of Quantumania will be Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors. The actor already played a variant of Kang, He Who Remains, in the finale of Loki on Disney+, which teased the villain's eventual MCU debut. Being that 2018's Ant-Man and the Wasp featured multiple antagonists not working together, it is unclear at this time if Murray's mysterious role will be connected to Majors', or someone else entirely. However, Murray's involvement in the superhero flick does mean a reunion will occur that did not take long to happen. The actor was just featured in Ghostbusters: Afterlife alongside Ant-Man actor Paul Rudd, though Murray's screen time was brief. At the red carpet premiere for Afterlife, Rudd summed up Murray's involvement in the MCU to nothing more than a rumor. While Rudd remained tight-lipped, it is clear that Murray's involvement in Quantumania is more than just whispers and assumptions, and he talked about the film's star further on The Eli Manning Show. Speaking with Manning, the comedy actor joked that Paul Rudd doesn't agree with his "Sexiest Man Alive" status, so neither does Murray, saying, "I'm gonna go along with Paul." Beyond that though, no other details about Rudd, Ant-Man or Murray's villainous role were shared. Gemma Chan Creates Her Own Good Work https://www.wmagazine.com/culture/gemma-chan-eternals-sersi-marvel-interview Eternals Star Confirms Their MCU Return: 'Marvel Owns Us for Life' https://www.cbr.com/marvel-eternals-gemma-chan-sersi-mcu-return-tease/ From W Magazine: Will you play Sersi again? Yes. Marvel owns us for life. [Laughs] One of the stars of Marvel Studios' Eternals confirms that her character will inevitably appear again in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe project. Eternals star Gemma Chan confirmed her return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview with W Magazine, Chan was asked how she felt about playing Eternals member Sersi in the recent MCU film. "It was interesting. In Eternals, she starts out shy and then discovers her power as a leader. That was fun," Chan said. When asked if she will ever reprise her Eternals role in the future, Chan had a cheeky response: "Yes. Marvel owns us for life." This is not the first time Chan has spoken about Sersi's transformation throughout the film, previously referring to the character's journey as a sort of "coming of age" story as she grows into her power. "I mean, yes, Sersi is a superhero, but her powers are not kind of the most obvious or the-the flashiest," Chan said during a November 2021 press conference attended by CBR. "She's not, you know, the best fighter. But what she does have is empathy and a real affinity for humankind and the earth." She continued, "That was one of the enjoyable things about the film, was going on that journey with that character. You know, it's kind of her coming of age, even though she's probably thousands of years old. But she learns to trust herself and to grow into her own power, really. And that was a really interesting thing to explore." How and when Chan will reappear in the MCU remains unclear, though Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has previously referred to Sersi as the de facto main character of the Eternals, and the film's ending left the door open for the remaining Eternals to reprise their roles in a future MCU installment. One half of the group sees Sersi, Kingo and Phastos abducted by the Celestial Arishem, while the other half encounters Harry Styles' Eros and Pip the Troll in space as they explore the stars. According to the director, Chloé Zhao, this is a stark contrast to the originally "bleak" ending she had planned for the titular Eternals. "I didn't hate it, because I'm used to films that are more melancholy. But I don't think it went down well with audiences," Zhao said. "It used to end with everybody back on the ship, minds erased and just going on to another planet, like The Twilight Zone. I remember when it goes to black, everyone was like, 'I don't know what to do.' And also, it's the MCU, and you want to be excited for what's next." Directed by Zhao from a script by herself, Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo, Eternals is slated to release on Disney+ on Jan. 12. Disney+ Adds Eternals to Updated MCU Timeline https://www.cbr.com/disney-plus-mcu-eternals-updated-timeline/ The release of Eternals on Disney+ confirms when the film takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. On Disney+, there's an option to have every available MCU project display in timeline order. In that list, Eternals takes place after Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and before Hawkeye, which is the release order for those titles. This makes Eternals the 27th project overall in the timeline, though it's noteworthy that 2008's The Incredible Hulk and the three MCU Spider-Man films are not available on the streaming service. Eternals follows the titular group of powerful aliens, who were sent to Earth by the Celestials to stop the Deviants. Parts of Eternals take place before most other events in the MCU timeline, but the majority of the action takes place after 2018's Avengers: Endgame. Following the reversal of Thanos' Blip, the Eternals are forced to come back together in order to once against stop the Deviants and prevent an event known as the "Emergence." Due to the five-year time jump in Endgame, Eternals takes place in approximately late 2023. Released on Nov. 5, 2021, Eternals earned $401.8 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $200 million. While that's low for an MCU film, Eternals released during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had people reticent to return to in-person screenings. Additionally, the project has not released in China, which is one of the biggest markets for films. While Eternals performed respectably at the box office, the film fared far worse with critics. At the time of writing, Eternals holds a 47 percent on Rotten Tomatoes among critics. This score makes Eternals the first MCU film to hold the "Rotten" distinction on the review aggregator. Still, the audience score for Eternals is much higher on Rotten Tomatoes and currently sits at 78 percent. It is unknown at this time whether Eternals will receive a sequel. However, Gemma Chan, who played Sersi in the film, has indicated that her character will indeed return at some point in the future. Directed by Chloé Zhao from a script by herself, Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo, Eternals is available now on Disney+. The movie will receive a home media release on Feb. 15. DISNEY+ ECHO DISNEY+ MCU TV SERIES FEATURES WRITERS FROM THE PUNISHER & DAREDEVIL SEASON 3 https://www.theilluminerdi.com/2022/01/08/echo-writers-punisher-daredevil/ Marvel Taps Daredevil and Punisher Writers for Disney+'s Echo Series https://www.cbr.com/marvel-daredevil-punisher-writers-echo-disney-plus/ Before the Echo Disney+ series enters production, join The Illuminerdi as we analyze the creative talent behind the Hawkeye spinoff. Hawkeye was a MCU TV series that followed Clint Barton and Kate Bishop, two heroes who hold the titular mantle. The action-comedy also introduced Marvel fans to newcomer Alaqua Cox, who played Maya Lopez. Lopez was an elite member of the Tracksuit Mafia, Kingpin's private guard. Maya Lopez learned that her father was murdered on the order of Kingpin, who had lied about her father's death and manipulated Maya into becoming his own living weapon. In the season finale, Maya shot Kingpin for his betrayal, though it's unlikely her attack will seriously impair Wilson Fisk Echo will take place after the events of Hawkeye, following Maya Lopez as she learns to fight crime and find her own way in the world. As reported by Murphy's Multiverse, the series will feature Marion Dayre as the lead writer, who worked on Better Call Saul. Dayre will be joined by Shoshannah Stern (Supernatural, This Close), Bobby Wilson (Rutherford Falls, Reservation Dogs), and more. Ken Kristensen and Dara Resnik will also work in the Echo writer's room, and their inclusion is the most intriguing considering their prior work. Kristensen wrote three episodes of the Marvel Netflix series, The Punisher while Resnik penned two episodes of Daredevil season three. This makes Kristensen and Resnik veterans of MCU TV, with work that predates the Marvel TV and Marvel Studios merger. These writers understand the street-level side of the MCU, having created nuanced, layered stories featuring icons like Frank Castle, Matt Murdock, Kingpin, Karen Paige and so many more. Benjamin Poindexter, John Pilgrim, Detective Mahoney and other underrated characters from Marvel Netflix steal the spotlight across the five amazing episodes of television penned by Resnik and Kristensen. Virtue Of The Vicious is a masterpiece unlike any other episode of Marvel TV. An attack on a senator and Karen Page (seemingly) by The Punisher and a domestic terrorist is explored by Detective Mahoney through the conflicting perspectives of those involved. This episode examines veterans and law enforcement officers, exploring the idea that good apples, bad apples and everything between exist across all professions. Giving someone a badge and a gun doesn't change that. As the cherry on top, there's a stairway combat sequence with Frank Castle that is almost unmatched in the MCU. Trouble The Water takes place in early season two, killing two birds with one stone. This episode establishes John Pilgrim and those he works for as a credible threat, while simultaneously reminding viewers of just how lethally badass The Punisher really is. This episode shows Frank Castle as an agent of death herself, and it doesn't get much better than that. The strongest elements of Flustercluck are the scenes shared between Frank Castle and his young ward Amy. A bounty is placed on their heads, drawing New York's lowliest out of the woodwork. Luckily for Amy, her guardian angel may as well be the devil himself, and he tears through dozens of men to protect her. This episode proves that saddling Frank Castle with a psuedo-sidekick was one of the smartest things Marvel Netflix ever did. Dara Resnik wrote Daredevil, season three, episode eight, “Upstairs/Downstairs” and cowrote episode eleven, “Reunion” alongside Jim Dunn. Dara Resnik and Ken Kristensen provided Marvel TV fans with some of Netflix's finest offerings in years past. As such, Echo is so much more promising with their talents attached. Hopefully their creative present shines in Echo, and if we're lucky, maybe they can write for some of the characters they worked with on Daredevil & The Punisher yet again. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe's latest outing has enough outsized star power to go around, one of its sharpest casting decisions had zilch to do with that. For the voice-only role of Arishem the Judge, the Celestial who shepherds the Eternals and sends them on the mission that opens the film, director Chloé Zhao and casting directors Sarah Finn and Anna Tenney made the eminently commendable decision to hire an actual voice actor. And, while this actor may not be as much of a household name as his fellow castmates, he's certainly a superstar in his own field. David Kaye. He's one of the few performers to have played both Optimus Prime and Megatron in some of the Transformers animated shows, while he also lent his voice to both Professor X and Apocalypse in X-Men: Evolution. He's played several more Marvel characters in the past, as well as Clank in the Ratchet & Clank games. He also serves as the announcer for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support

The focus of this interview is the newest Marvel film, Eternals. Speaking with Weta Digital's VFX Supervisor and Animation Supervisor Sidney Kombo-Kintombo. We go into detail about how they did the effects in the film, including Angelina Jolie's character of Thena being CGI apart from her face for the entire film, the evolution of the deviants, the scenes with Arishem, and the focus on each of the Eternals' celestial powers. Excitingly, we also spoke about the popular mid-credits scene in Eternals in which Harry Styles and Patton Oswalt are introduced as Eros and Pip the Troll respectively. We learned about how the actors were riffing and ad-libbing in the scene and how Patton Oswalt wasn't even short enough - he had to act on his knees! I think you guys will learn a lot with this one, and Matt and Sidney are awesome guys to speak with and did an incredible job with the cinematics.
THIS IS PART 2 This week, Brandon and Gabby continue to talk about Eternals. Good day to you listeners! It's the super-sized Eternals movie review podcast! But first, we have to go over the weekly comic book pull list real quick (at 0:08:44), then onto the good stuff! The Eternals discussion begins at 0:27:22 with that opening titles crawl, explaining the six singularities, the dawn of creation, and then Arishem and the Celestials both in the comics and as they are set up in the movie. Ego, the Living Planet, and his connections to the Celestials are brought into the discussion at 0:35:00, before starting the basic plot overview at 0:38:01. This section includes the most basic of plot explanations, tied up with all kinds of comics history, Easter eggs, MCU translations, some theories, and more, all the way to the ending. With the plot covered, it's on to the major and minor changes made from the comics to the MCU at 0:52:03, including retro and modern Eternals history. Then I have an in-depth look at each of the MCU versions of these Characters at 0:55:43, covering all ten Eternals and Dane Whitman, and comparing them to their comic counterparts. Finally, noteworthy moments in the movie are at 01:07:10, followed by my favorite bits of humor at 1:14:03. After a brief discussion of the movie's sometimes surprising music at 1:18:51, the episode wraps up with what to expect next for the MCU, spinning out of the events of this movie at 01:21:13. Whew, I think that was it! Let me know what you thought of the movie and give me some feedback on what worked or not in my discussion! I'll be back next for episode 41B on Friday (or Saturday) November 12/13, discussing the week's comic book pick list, possibly all that DCTV I'm behind on, more than likely more thoughts on Eternals, and anything relevant that hits the news! Have a great week, stay sweaty, and do good. We're back in the cinema with the 26th movie in the MCU and our Marvel's Eternals Movie discussion. We go deep into spoilers about the epic introduction to a new side of the marvel cinematic universe from director Chloé Zhao. Synopsis for our Eternals Movie Review Spoiler filled Podcast Directed By - Chloé Zhao Screenplay by - Chloé Zhao, Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo Story by - Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo Based on characters by - Jack Kirby In 5000 BC a group of Eternal warriors, Ajak, Ikaris, Sersi, Sprite, Thena, Druig, Gilgamesh, Kingo, Makkari and Phastos were sent to earth by the Celestial being Arishem. Their mission is to protect humans from violent Deviants but not interfere with human progress. Over millennia they fight this battle, and eventually establish a stronghold where they live together in Babylon. Two of the Eternals, Ikaris and Sersi fall in love and marry. By 1521, at Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire, the Eternals finally defeated the last Deviant on Earth. In the aftermath of this victory, Thena is afflicted with Mahd Wy'ry, a disease that releases the memories of all of her previous lives. She can not control her power and attacks the Eternals. Gilgamesh calms Thena and agrees to watch over her instead of wiping her mind. With their mission seemingly complete, their leader, Ajak, releases the rest from their obligations to go out in the world and live lives until Arishem calls upon them. But Druig, who has the power of mind control, is angry that he's not allowed to use these powers to prevent conflict between humans and separates from all the rest. In present day London, Sersi and Eternal teenager Sprite are attacked by a new, more powerful Deviant. With the help of Ikaris they drive away the monster and set out to find their leader Ajak who has been murdered by the Deviant. As Sersi stays by Ajak's side a golden orb passes from Ajak to her, as she is chosen as the new leader of the team. She contacts Arishem, Sersi learns the truth. They were to encourage life on earth until there was enough to awaken a new Celestial Tiamut. The return of all humans after Thanos' snap has tipped the balance and Sersi needs to reunite the Eternals before the planet they love is destroyed. Cast of Marvel's Eternals Sersi played by Gemma Chan Ikaris played by Richard Madden Phastos played by Brian Tyree Henry Thena played by Angelina Jolie Ajak played by Salma Hayek Druig played by Barry Keoghan Gilgamesh played by Ma Dong-seok as Dan Lee Kingo played by Kumail Nanjiani Makkari played by Lauren Ridloff Dane Whitman played by Kit Harington Sprite played by Lia McHugh Kro The Deviant voiced by Bill Skarsgård Arishem voiced by David Kaye Ben played by Haaz Sleiman Jack Played by Esai Daniel Cross Subscribe to TV Podcast Industries If you want to keep up with us and all of our podcasts please subscribe to the podcast over at https://tvpodcastindustries.com where we will continue to podcast about multiple TV shows we hope you'll love. It's been a little while, but Christy and Nicolas are back with another Marvel Mondays episode of Breakfast All Day. This time we take on “Eternals,” and we have mixed feelings about it. Nic and Christy discuss how uniquely beautiful director and co-writer Chloe Zhao‘s film is and how exciting it is to see such a diverse cast. But it also makes these ungainly swings in pacing and tone, and a week after seeing the film, Nic couldn't remember a whole lot about it. Also FYI: Christy misspoke initially here and said Richard Madden played Gemma Chan's boyfriend — she meant his “Game of Thrones” co-star Kit Harington, and eventually corrected heself. And yes, we finally figured out that the behemoth Celestial's name is Arishem, and not Assmouth as we kept calling him. Plus: bonus background sounds of Baxter playing with his squeaky lamby toy. “Eternals” is one of the weaker entries in the MCU, but we always love talking about movies together, and we're grateful to have you join us. We'd love to hear your thoughts, too.
