(Group Learning Program) - Chapter 8 - Transforming the Three Poisons: Craving, Anger, and Ignorance Gotama Buddha's Teachings to eliminate craving, anger, and ignorance are known, for good reason, as The Three Poisons, The Three Unwholesome Roots, and The Three Fires. Also known as (greed, hatred, and delusion) or (desire, ill will, and confusion). These are The Three Poisons that exist and are present in the mind as part of rebirth into the human realm. It is our goal, through these Teachings, to eliminate these three poisons through practice of non-craving or generosity, non-anger or loving-kindness, and non-ignorance or wisdom. To attain Enlightenment, one would need to completely eliminate The Three Poisons. In this Podcast, David will help you understand The Three Poisons, how they cause you problems in life, and how to eliminate them from the mind. ——-Daily Wisdom - Walking The Path with The BuddhaDedicated to the education of Gotama Buddha's Teachings to attain Enlightenment. https://www.BuddhaDailyWisdom.com (See our website for online learning, courses, and retreats.) Girolamo Savonarola was a late 15th century Dominican friar who rose to become a preacher, prophet, and politician. He took on the corruption of the Roman Catholic Church and despotic rulers including the powerful Medicis. He was both progressive - helping to lay the foundations of the Reformation and the Enlightenment - but also fundamentalist and deeply unsettling. In this episode, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb talks to award-winning author Denise Mina, whose novel Three Fires tells the story of Savonarola and his role in the bonfire of the vanities - the burning of objects considered sinful, such as cosmetics, mirrors, books, and art. This episode was produced by Rob Weinberg.Discover the past with exclusive history documentaries and ad-free podcasts presented by world-renowned historians from History Hit. It is the first European settlement above tidewater in North America. Founded as a New France fur trading post, it began to expand during the 19th century with American settlements around the Great Lakes. By 1920, based on the booming auto industry and immigration, it became a world-class industrial powerhouse and the fourth-largest city in the United States. It held that standing through the mid-20th century. The first Europeans to settle in Detroit were French country traders and colonists from the New Orleans (the La Louisiane) colony. They were joined by traders from Montreal and Quebec; all had to contend with the powerful Five Nations of the League of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee), who took control of the southern shores of Lakes Erie and Huron through the Beaver Wars of the 17th century. Also present and powerful, but further to the north, were the Council of Three Fires (Anishinaabe). For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali catches up with writer Denise Mina to talk about her new historical novel 'Three Fires', which is published by Polygon Books. Following on from the equally compelling 'Rizzio', 'Three Fires' takes a historical figure and uses significant events from the past to comment and question the present day. Denise talks about the central, complex, character of Girolamo Savonarola and how his ideas, and the resulting actions and following he inspired, are still felt today. What are we trying to end in Buddhism? The Three Fires of greed, anger, and ignorance result in karmic actions that trap us in rebirth and dukkha (suffering). But how did we get here in the first place? What "fuels" those three fires? It's Upadana. Literally "fuel", but often translated as "attachment". This is where we cling and attach to sense objects with our sense organs (we see something we like through our eyes for instance, and that gives rise to our mind/consciousness). When we guard our senses and tame our mind, we cut off the fuel to the three fires which is nirvana...our true mental state of freedom. Also, in this episode I'll read the Fire Sermon (13 minutes into the episode) which gives context to Upadana and the Three Fires. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, July 28. Thursday will start with a slight chance for showers, but if you don't get up especially early you can pretend that never happened. According to the National Weather Service after 7 a.m. it will be mostly sunny in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 81 degrees. On Thursday night it will be mostly clear, with a low of around 58 degrees. The debate over school resource officers appears like it will continue awhile longer. The city of Cedar Rapids is offering to fully fund two additional school resource officers to do work at Cedar Rapids middle schools after the school board voted earlier this month to remove those officers. In a letter to the school board — obtained by The Gazette — dated Tuesday and signed by Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell, the two additional school resource officers could start their day at the Cedar Rapids Police Department to serve middle schools. These additional officers would bring the total number of police in Cedar Rapids schools back up to seven, where it had been. It remains to be seen whether this will move the needle for the Cedar Rapids School Board. Part of the reason the board voted to remove the officers are statistics showing that there is a racial disparity in the way students are disciplined when resource officers are present. Tests have confirmed a brain-eating amoeba was present in a southwest Iowa lake where a Missouri resident was sickened last month. That person, who swam at Lake of Three Fires State Park in the last two weeks of June, https://www.thegazette.com/environment-nature/lake-of-three-fires-swimmer-infected-by-brain-damaging-amoeba-has-died/ (died of the parasitic infection July 7.) Several state agencies completed testing of the water at Lake of Three Fires, 25 miles east of Clarinda, and confirmed the presence of Naegleria fowleri amoeba that can cause a rare and often fatal brain infection. Now that testing is complete, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will reopen the beach at Lake of Three Fires, which has been closed since July 8. The beach will be posted with signs warning swimmers of the presence of the parasite in the water and the risk of infection. The state does not plan to test other recreational waters. Swimmers can reduce their risk by keeping their head out of the water and using nose clips or plugging their nose when going underwater.  Iowa saw the number of new COVID-19 cases continue to increase in the past week, reporting 5,924 new cases in the past week, up 12 percent from the previous week's 5,301 new cases. This continues the upward trend in cases in July after cases in June hovered at under 4,000 a week. Experts believe that a highly contagious version of the omicron variant now dominant in Iowa and the rest of the nation is leading to the increase in cases. As of Wednesday, 84 Iowa counties — including Linn and Johnson — are experiencing “high” COVID-19 community transmission, compared to 78 counties last week. In one bit of good news, hospitalizations for the disease went down slightly this week now at 249, from last week's 256. There were also far fewer deaths from the disease, with 23 new covid deaths reported.

Welcome to the weekend! This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10. This weekend's weather will be sunny and cool. According to the National Weather Service, on Saturday in the Cedar Rapids area it will be sunny with a high near 82 degrees and a low near 60 degrees. On Sunday the high will be close to 85 degrees, again with sunny skies, and the low will come in at 66 degrees. The Vinton Public Library, which lost two directors in two years amid community complaints over books, is now closed indefinitely as the interim director has left, too. https://www.thegazette.com/news/two-directors-quit-vinton-library-after-complaints-about-hirings-lgbtq-and-biden-books/ (The previous directors left )after city residents complained about the library's display of LGBTQ books and books about Democratic President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The library board met Tuesday to accept the resignation of Colton Neely, the interim director. Neely, formerly the library's children's director, will become a museum curator in Burlington. His last day — and the library's last day to stay open for now — was Friday. Vinton, a town of about 5,000 and the county seat of Benton County, will now be without its library for at least the next week as the library board attempts to configure hours to work around an absence of directors. Board members told the Gazette that the hiring process for another director is in process. A Missouri resident has been infected by a microscopic organism that causes a rare, life-threatening brain infection after swimming in late June at Lake of Three Fires State Park in Southwest Iowa. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has closed the Taylor County lake to swimming as officials test for Naegleria fowleri, a single-cell, parasitic amoeba that can cause primary amebic meningoencephalitis. The brain infection is rare — with only 154 known cases in the United States since 1962 — but it's nearly always fatal. https://www.iowadnr.gov/Places-to-Go/State-Parks/Iowa-State-Parks/Lake-of-Three-Fires-State-Park (Lake of Three Fires), about 25 miles east of Clarinda, is an 85-acre lake popular with boaters and anglers, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports. The state park was dedicated in 1935 and is named after a group of Native Americans from the Potawatomi tribe, known as the “Fire Nation,” who once inhabited the area. The lake has frequently been https://www.thegazette.com/government-politics/going-swimming-at-a-state-park-beach-iowa-gets-tougher-on-toxins/ (closed to swimming) in past summers because of harmful algae that create toxic microcystins that can sicken swimmers. Algae are fed by phosphorus that washes from farm fields into streams and lakes. The Big Ten Conference is “not seeking applications” for any new members after its blockbuster additions of USC and UCLA, Iowa athletics director Gary Barta said in a Friday news conference. “I don't have a crystal ball, but at this point, I can tell you the Big Ten is still not seeking members,” Barta said. “I know the Big Ten is taking calls. … I'm not predicting that we would be adding any more in the near future.” Barta declined to say whether he'd support the addition of more schools from the west coast such as Oregon or Washington to the Big Ten. He did say he would likely support membership for Notre Dame, if the Big Ten finally managed to seduce them into the conference after years of pining. Barta said the primary concern now is solving logistical problems, such as travel challenges not just for football, but for nonrevenue sports as well.

He is also the author of Indians and Other Misnomers: A Cross-Reference Dictionary of the People, Persons, and Places of Native North America.

Wilderness Wanderings

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.” (Matthew 23:23-4)   Last week, Canada marked the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.  It's easy to pay attention when everyone else is, but now a few days later and at the beginning of a new week, it's a good time to ask the question: what stuck with you from that day? Our church sits on land that was originally a shared territory between the Haudenosaunee and Anishnaabeg nations, protected by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant.  What does that mean?  Well, let me share a bit…  The Haudenosaunee is a confederacy of nations that we might know better by some of their other names.  It is a confederacy of nations made up of the Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga and Mohawk.  Later the Tuscarora would also join these five nations, making them the Six Nations that we know today from the Grand River.  Colonists in North America knew these people as the Iroquois, but their self designation is Haudenosaunee, meaning “People of the Longhouse.”  The Anishnaabeg nations include the Algonquin, Nipissing, Missisauga, Ojibwa, Odawa and Potawatomi.  The first three in this list you may recognize from local names in this region of Ontario, and the last three I may know better, as they were the Council of Three Fires nations to whom belonged the land I grew up on in my home State of Michigan.  The Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant is an agreement that binds all these nations together as sharers in the provisions of the land, but also in its protection.  It was an agreement of mutual respect to one another's needs, but also to the needs of the land for stewardship.  As settlers moved into these areas of the Great Lakes, they were invited to join in this land-use covenant together with the nations who had already resided here for millennia.  This was hospitality and generosity, founded in a belief that there was enough land and enough provision if the land was shared and respected together. The settlers had a different understanding of land use though.  Not as a gift to be shared with open hands, but as a resource to be privately owned and exploited to its fullest wealth-generating potential, even if that meant using the resource up.  The settlers came with their new laws and government and with a decided arrogance against these naïve ways of mutuality and sharing.  Over time, the land would simply be taken from the original nations to whom it belonged through the exploitative use of these laws.  The Covenant of the Dish with one Spoon was violated; and the mighty Six Nations were confined to piddly reserves and subjected to cultural genocide.  All the while, many of the new settlers attended their churches and gave their tithes. We Westerners believe—or at least act—as if our thick codes of civilized law, which includes the subjagative Indian Act, are superior to any of the naïve forms of government possessed by the nations we conquered by treaty.  But weigh it out for yourself: who in this story is more like the Pharisees Jesus proclaimed a woe upon?  Who are the ones who have neglected the more important matters of the law such as justice, mercy, and faithfulness?

I know what you’re thinking: “Who the heck is Marcus Paladino?”  Well, he’s your cold-water king of surf photography. Through neoprene stiff fingers and frozen eyelids, Marcus is dedicated to capturing high-performance surfing on the west coast of Canada. He lives above 1/800th of a second, but isn’t afraid to slow things down. It’s sex, drugs and rock & roll, but also, it’s smooth jazz and a cup of tea. A habitual homebody just itching to get out of his comfort zone. Surfing is the reason he wakes up every morning.  He doesn’t matter. The endeavour of marathon swims in bone-chilling and heart-pounding conditions is irrelevant. What’s important to him lies in front of the lens. The split-second moments that most people don’t even know exist; capturing them forever instead of letting them pass by.  - Excerpt taken from www.marcuspaladino.com/about-marcus Connect with Marcus Paladino online at www.marcuspaladino.com, on Instagram at @marcuspaladino and on Facebook at @marcuspaladinophotography.  His film Waterspider can be viewed on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/382856164 and Cold Comfort is available for pre-order and purchase on May 25, 2021 at Rocky Mountain Books.        This episode was recorded on April 15, 2021 and features coarse language.  Viewer discretion is advised. Chapter 8 - Transforming the Three Poisons: Greed, Hatred, and Delusion - (Group Learning Program) Gotama Buddha's teachings to eliminate, greed, hatred, and delusion are known, for good reason, as The Three Poisons, The Three Unwholesome Roots, and The Three Fires. Also known as, craving, anger, and ignorance. These are The Three Poisons that exist and are present in the mind as part of rebirth into the human realm. It is our goal, through these teachings, to eliminate these Three Poisons through practice of non-greed or generosity, non-hatred or loving-kindness, and non-delusion or wisdom. To attain Nibbana, one would need to completely eliminate The Three Poisons. In this Podcast, David will help you understand The Three Poisons, how they cause you problems in life and how to eliminate them from the mind. ——- Daily Wisdom - Walking The Path with The Buddha Dedicated to the education of Gotama Buddha's teachings to attain Enlightenment. https://www.BuddhaDailyWisdom.com (See our website for online learning, courses, and retreats.) LEARN - (Chapter 8) - Transforming The Three Poisons: Greed, Hatred, and Delusion Gotama Buddha's teachings to eliminate, greed, hatred, and delusion are known, for good reason, as The Three Poisons, The Three Unwholesome Roots, and The Three Fires. These metaphors suggest how dangerous afflictive thoughts and emotions can be if they are not understood and transformed. The poisons of greed, hatred, and delusion — mask our true nature, the awakened mind of wisdom and compassion. These poisonous states of mind than motivate non-virtuous and unskillful intentions, speech, and actions, which produces unwholesome Kamma. In this Podcast, David will help you understand The Three Poisons, how they cause you problems in life and how to eliminate them from the mind. ——- Daily Wisdom - Walking The Path with The Buddha Dedicated to the education of Gotama Buddha's teachings to attain Enlightenment. https://www.BuddhaDailyWisdom.com (See our website for online learning, courses, and retreats.)
