In this episode of InResidency, we sit down with Stephen Baboon—photographer, performer, and founder of Native Fruits Collective—to talk about queerness, Haiti, and the radical tenderness in his work. Baboon shares how his layered identity as a queer Haitian artist with Middle Eastern roots informs everything from his commercial collaborations to his fine art practice.“I create in that in-between state… Identity will never be resolved. We're complex beings.”Together, we explore what it means to make beauty in the face of devastation, how art builds community, and why his portraits feel more like altars than images. This conversation is a love letter to cultural hybridity, chosen family, and the power of visual storytelling. Now streaming on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeart, and all major platforms.Read the feature article in English or Spanish with our digital magazine on the SUBstack platform https://thebureauofqueerart.substack.com

On Prophecy Radio episode #136, Karen and Kristen continue their discussion of The Red Pyramid with chapters 27 and 28! They also talk about their new obsession with Lorcana and some small updates with Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:05:42) We take a few minutes to talk about how much we love Lorcana. Did you see the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 poster? We're pretty sure this is Charybdis. We love the vibe and think it meshes very well with what we've seen in season 1. Liam has been putting in the work at Screenrant, giving us some good stuff to talk about while we wait for more season 2 information! Aryan talks about his experience filming season 2. We're super excited to see Grover's growth this year! We also learn when Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 3 starts filming. What can we expect from Comic-Con this year? The Red Pyramid discussion (00:13:48) This week's chapters felt like they had a little more forward motion. Let's kick this off with our Red Pyramid chapter 27 discussion! We really love being in Sadie's POV! Which of the Kane siblings do you relate to most? YOU MUSTN'T READ FROM THE BOOK! Once again we are convinced this book would look so amazing on screen. We discuss how “conflicting stories can be equally true” and how difficult that is to accept. Sadie kind of doesn't have a choice about accepting what's going on around her. Why does Sadie feel guilty about Isis' role in Set's downfall but is also adamant that she's a totally separate person!? We talk about demons in Egyptian mythology. What do we think of Shezmu?? Why did Carter run for the Book of the Dead? Wait, HOW do they make the wine of the dead?? Does Shezmu being the Lord of the Perfume actually make sense?? What ARE secret names, exactly? There are SO many comparisons between Egyptian and Greek mythology. It's time for our favorite lines and favorite moments! And now we're going to move onto Red Pyramid chapter 28. Toilet humor + the apocalypse = Rick Riordan's signature style Turns out a lake of fire smells about as bad as you'd think. We were SO HAPPY to see Iskandar again. Was Iskandar's heart in the right place when he banned the hosting of gods? It's so nice when an adult can admit they're wrong!! Did Sadie and Carter's parents know what they were doing when they got married and had kids? Was this the Ma'at making sure the universe remained balanced? Were you surprised that Sadie formally forgave Iskandar? Why was this section in the Underworld so focused on Sadie? Is nobody worried about how they're going to get back from the island in the middle of the lake of fire!? Carter is definitely a finger guns type of guy. Why are dogs so often connected to death and the Underworld? The dog is definitely Anubis and Sadie is definitely into him. And so are we. Baboon is a very efficient language. The fact that Anubis and Sadie are into each other is…complicated. Is there anyone who would turn down a hippodoodle!? Will Carter be angry that Sadie keeps leaving him behind? Anubis whips out the toilet paper to make a bench. He also kind of puts his foot in his mouth when he mentions her mother. The feather of truth is kind of intense and it is sure to lead to some interesting situations. There's a reason Anubis is such a sad boy and it's…yikes. He's a lot like Hades, and Sadie says the ONE thing that could get him to hand over the feather. Would Sadie choose her father or the world? What are our favorite lines and favorite moments?? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 137, where we'll discuss The Red Pyramid chapters 29 and 30, as well as get you up to date on whatever Percy Jackson news might pop up. This episode's hosts are: Karen and Kristen Each episode, Prophecy Radio‘s hosts will discuss any official news coming out of Camp Half-Blood before doing a chapter by chapter reread of Percy Jackson or one of Rick Riordan's other series. Your biology’s been hacked. Your naturally evolved appetite would allow you to eat exactly the right amount of food every day, except that most of us live in highly industrialised food environments today. Two of nutrition’s most productive scientists explain how we ended up here, and how you can eat healthier in an imbalanced food environment. ~~~ Why don’t animals need calorie trackers? Baboons don’t know the difference between fats and carbs, don’t follow a keto diet and don’t track what they eat. Yet we humans, who have all this technology at hand, are facing an obesity epidemic when no other animal seems to struggle with healthy eating. How is that possible? Professors Steve Simpson and David Raubenheimer have strived to answer that question for as long as they’ve worked together. By studying the feeding patterns of locusts and paying extra attention to protein, they’ve concluded that humans should be able to eat as well as the animals – but our modern food environment won’t let us. Steve is Academic Director of the Charles Perkins Centre, and a Professor in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney, and Executive Director of Obesity Australia. David is the Leonard P Ullmann Chair in Nutritional Ecology at the University of Sydney. +++ The Solutionists This episode was produced by Liam Riordan with sound design by Jeremy Wilmot. On Prophecy Radio episode #134, Karen and Kristen return to The Red Pyramid with their discussion of chapters 23 and 24! They also talk about Rick Riordan's love of high-quality boxes, as well as some minor Percy Jackson and the Olympians news. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:07:24) Independent Bookstore Day is on April 26–go support your local shop if you can!! Did you catch Rick Riordan unboxing his Emmys? The Dad vibes are strong with this video! Jay Duplass will not return as Hades in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2–but all is not lost. We love how much his kids love Percy Jackson, which means the likelihood of him coming back for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 3 is pretty high. We can't remember if we discussed the Gray Sisters casting from D23 2024, but we're doing it now! Where do we know Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal, and Margaret Cho from? The Red Pyramid discussion (00:19:45) Let's start with The Red Pyramid chapter 23. Sadie is human again! We find out how she did it. Nobody woke Carter for lunch, but that's the least of his worries right now. Bast thinks Set might not be the one at the top of the food chain here, and that's definitely cause for concern. It's time to head to Memphis–and this time they're not “borrowing” a car, though Bast still requires a convertible. There's a lot of atmospheric description to this book, and we're all for it. Baboons playing basketball is probably a good indication that a god is nearby. Carter is NOT great at basketball, but we find out why it's so important to him. We love how hard Sadie is working to be kind to him about this. Finally, we get to meet Toth, the god of wisdom, as well as all of his ibis receptionists. Is it weird that the Greeks likened him to Hermes? Ah, yes, the importance of astrology and leechcraft. The way Thoth's powers are portrayed was super interesting and makes you wonder how powerful he is. We get some important backstory about the relationship between Horus, Isis, Set, and Thoth. Thoth seems to be a bit of a contradiction–highly intelligent and yet not very observant. Knowing a creature's actual name has such power, and we love this concept. How can Sadie hold a goddess at bay if she was also having trouble with her sense of self enough to struggle coming out of her kite form? Did we all feel on a spiritual level how much Thoth didn't want to read his old work, or was that just us? Was this chapter too long and too full of information to really comprehend everything? Time for our favorite lines and favorite moments! Now it's time to head to Graceland in The Red Pyramid chapter 24. Was Elvis a magician? All signs point to yes. Seriously, though, music really is magical. It must be so weird to be at Graceland with no tourists. STOP DESTROYING NATIONAL MONUMENTS. Karen really wants to know what type of lizard Carter was turned into. Sadie is SO resourceful, and we loved seeing how she defeated the magicians. This time, we DO know what kind of reptile is on the page–and it's a big one! How did Sadie turn Carter back into a person? Was this just a test from Thoth? At least they fixed up Graceland before they left. Could the cat of Ra actually be Bast?? How does she feel about battling Apophis again? Favorite lines and favorite scenes! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 135, where we'll discuss The Red Pyramid chapters 25 and 26, as well as get you up to date on whatever Percy Jackson news might be out there. BUFFALO, NY — April 23, 2025 — A new #research paper was #published in Aging (Aging-US) Volume 17, Issue 3, on March 18, 2025, titled “Epigenetic and accelerated age in captive olive baboons (Papio anubis), and relationships with walking speed and fine motor performance.” In this study, led by Sarah J. Neal from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, researchers examined how the epigenetic age of baboons—a measure of biological aging based on DNA methylation—compared to their actual age (chronological age) and whether it related to signs of aging like slower walking or reduced hand coordination. While many baboons showed a mismatch between their epigenetic and chronological ages, these differences did not consistently align with physical performance measures. Researchers analyzed blood samples from 140 captive olive baboons (Papio anubis) to determine whether these primates, like humans, show signs of “age acceleration”—a condition where epigenetic age surpasses chronological age. The results revealed that about a quarter of the baboons exhibited accelerated aging, while another quarter showed signs of slower aging, known as “age deceleration.” “We found that epigenetic age was strongly correlated with chronological age, and that approximately 27% of the sample showed age acceleration and 28% showed age deceleration." The scientists then investigated whether these differences were reflected in physical indicators such as walking speed or fine motor skills. To do this, researchers measured walking speed by tracking how quickly baboons moved between points in their enclosures and assessed fine motor skills using a simple task that involved picking up small objects. Older baboons did tend to walk more slowly and perform worse on tasks requiring dexterity, patterns also seen in aging humans. However, these changes were more closely related to chronological age than epigenetic age. Two different methods were used to measure the gap between epigenetic and chronological age. Each method produced slightly different outcomes, highlighting the complexity of defining age acceleration. In one analysis, the oldest baboons appeared to age more slowly epigenetically, possibly reflecting selective survival, where only the healthiest individuals live into old age. This research is among the first to classify baboons based on their epigenetic aging rate and investigate how this links to real-world signs of aging. Although the findings did not provide clear evidence that epigenetic age acceleration leads to physical decline, they point to the importance of DNA methylation as a biomarker in aging research. Because baboons share many biological similarities with humans, these findings help refine how researchers measure aging and assess potential early warning signs of decline. Continued studies in baboons and other primates may improve our understanding of how epigenetic aging influences health and longevity—and could help develop better tools for predicting age-related decline in humans. You are not alone! Wir sind nicht allein! Wir sind Radio Rebelde! Revolution rocks! A woman encounters an orangutan-looking creature on her porch at her swampy homestead. A hunter sees a troop of baboons. A hairy hand reaches into a deer blind. Across the American South, particularly in states like Texas and Florida, tales have surfaced for decades of strange, often unnerving encounters in the wilderness—not with known native wildlife, but with creatures resembling feral apes or wild primates. Some researchers believe these sightings may be linked to feral populations of escaped or released primates. In the mid-20th century, exotic pet ownership and roadside zoos were far more common, and many animals were let loose or escaped into the wild. Over time, it's possible that some species adapted to their environments, forming secretive breeding populations in remote, unmonitored regions. Wildlife journalist and field investigators have documented everything from anomalous hair samples to strange vocal recordings in these hotspots. The behaviors described—chest-beating, howling, and ambush-like movements—align more with great apes than with any known North American species. In the latest episode of Dark Outdoors, we dive deep into these encounters with feral apes and wild primates, exploring the theories, legends, and firsthand accounts that paint a chilling portrait of what might be lurking just beyond the campfire's glow.

Can Men and Women (Baboons) Really Just Be Friends? In the romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally,” the central premise, as Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan's characters stay friends throughout the years, is, can men and women really just be friends? In the movie, the answer is no, not really. Spoiler alert: They do get together in the end. But what if we take that concept and bring it to the animal kingdom, specifically to primates? The Kinda baboon is known for its distinct social behaviors. Individuals form long-term, social bonds, and those relationships are seen, uniquely, between male and female baboons. Over nine years, researchers studied the Kinda baboon, a kinder, gentler species of baboon, to learn more about their social lives. Kindas are unique among baboons because they're the least sexually dimorphic: males and females are close to the same size, making them a better analog for us humans. So can male and female baboons really be just friends? Much like the movie, long friendships do happen between Kindas—but there also appears to be a benefit during mating season.Joining Host Flora Lichtman to talk about her work with these baboons is Dr. Anna Weyher, founder of the Kasanka Baboon Project in Zambia. Weyher has studied Kinda baboons for over a decade. The Best Bear Deterrent May Be DronesWhat do you do when a bear keeps coming too close to people, and doesn't take the hint to stay away? It's a serious problem, because human-wildlife conflict can be dangerous for both the people and animals involved. Wildlife managers have for years used a collection of deterrents, including firecracker noises, rubber bullets, and trained dogs, to try to chase bears away from human habitations.Writing in the journal Frontiers in Conservation Science, former Montana bear management specialist Wesley Sarmento claims that a high-tech approach may be more effective: drones. Sarmento joins Host Flora Lichtman to discuss his experiences with hazing stubborn bears.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. A new study suggests that self-awareness in wild primates may be more limited than previously thought. In laboratory settings, great apes such as chimpanzees and orangutans have demonstrated self-recognition by passing the “mark test,” where they notice and respond to a dot placed on their faces while looking in a mirror. A PRIMATE'S MEMOIR (Love, Death and Baboons) by Robert Sapolsky, chosen by Professor Ben Garrod SOLDIER SAILOR by Claire Kilroy, chosen by Harriett Gilbert THE ABUNDANCE by Annie Dillard, chosen by Lucy JonesEvolutionary biologist Ben Garrod (Professor at the University of East Anglia) chooses a book which he's read and gifted countless times, a book which inspired him to go out in the field and study chimpanzees himself: A Primate's Memoir by Robert Sapolsky. Robert is one of the leading primatologists and scientists today and this is his gripping, at times heartbreaking account of leaving the United States age twenty-one to study wild baboons in the Kenyan savannah.Lucy Jones (author of Matrescence and Losing Eden) picks an author she has consistently loved for her child-like gift of wonder and close, detailed attention to the natural world. Lucy brings Annie Dillard's collection of essays, The Abundance, for the others to read. And Harriett Gilbert recommends a fictional tale of early motherhood. A vivid, immersive monologue of a woman on the brink that keeps readers on the edge of their seats to the very end.
